Poi Class Description:

Whether you already know a wide number of tricks or are picking up a set of
poi for the first time ever, this class is geared toward teaching you both
the the most cutting edge ideas in poi while helping you attain full freedom
of motion to develop your own style of poi dance and expression.

If you intend to take the fall class, PLEASE register before leaving for
Burning Man as they count my attendance numbers the week of. The class will
be canceled if I do not have the minimum number of students before
then--don't wait till the last minute on this one!
Contradiction Dance is at *7014 Westmoreland Ave in Takoma Park, MD.
Practice poi will be provided, but motion attire is strongly recommended.

Hoop Class Description:

This class will be based on the HoopGirl Workout format, it is suitable for
beginners or those who would like to develop their technique. We are also
considering adding an Intermediate/ Advanced class to the schedule but must
have a minimum of 5 students interested. Let me know if this is something
you would be interested in.

No experience neccessary! The extended class time in this series allows for

*About ME: *Surprise! (aka Katie Desmond) has been spreading her love and
joy of hooping for over six years. A California native, she has wowed
audiences across the United States with her campy, fun and theatrical style
of hoop and fire dance. In 2009, she was nominated for Fire Hooper of the
Year by Hooping.org. Katie is a licensed HoopGirl Level 1 teacher who
believes that she can teach anyone to hoop. Surprise! is available for
performances and private workshops and events. She also designs colorful
custom made hoops.

Fire Dance Choreography Class Description:

Have you been itching to become part of a rehearsing team that produces
clockwork precision and heart wrenching theatrics with fire? If so, I'd like
to draw your attention to a 12 class course Dance Afire is offering
during the fall session with that very goal in mind. At the end of the
course the participants will be crafted into an independent,
performance crew, ready to ply their trade for fun and profit.

Crafting and performing choreo is an entirely different creature than our
normal ecstatic fire play. The first requirement to make such a team come
together is a consistent and comfortable rehearsal space. Next you need a
leader with the vision and patience to herd you burning cats towards that
vision. I have those ingredients in spades. The last and most important
ingredient is your dedication. Mix those three elements and together we will
craft DC's newest fire dance sensation.

All levels welcome, the first and most important requirement is that you own
your fire tools

Hey, kids-

Next week is the last class of the summer session, which means that we've
got a few weeks off and after Burning Man I'll be teaching a new 8-week
session or poi classes at Contradiction Dance. This session we've worked on
how you can turn in all the combinations of timing and direction with poi,
flowers, and CAPs--the exotic combination of flowers and stalls that are the
hot new thing in poi this past year.

Hiyya Friends,

I know its a cliche, but time is really running out on registration for
Dance Afire summer classes. We have a great schedule & space at
Contradiction Dance but we need to reach our minimum of preregistered
students to keep 'em. So if you have an itch to learn staff, poi, or hoop
there is no better time to scratch then now.

April Fools Extravaganza--April 3rd!

Calling all Burners! We're following up Art of Change by putting on another large-scale event designed to bring a piece of the playa into DC's consciousness.

Join us on April 3rd at Station 9 (1438 U St NW) to reinvent the circus--we'll have fire dancers, magicians, clowns, and many more sideshow performers as well as special performances by Archedream for Humankind and Dance Afire!

Tickets are $10 through March 27th through Ticket Alternative (http://www.ticketalternative.com/Events/4709.aspx) or get it for $15 at the door. This is a burner benefit for Clowns without Borders, so all the ticket proceeds go to a CWB mission to Sudan in May.

Doors open at 9:30. Dress code is Clown Formal ;)

event the encourages the reusing of stuff and things. For the 2nd
bazaar, we are asking for a $10 tabling fee OR 10% OF YOUR TAKE

service or a workshop for a fee. If you want to offer a free workshop,
there will be no charge to table. It will be free to general public,
to anyone who simply wants to attend. Ultimately, we would like this
to become a revenue stream to help support the studio and to be
profitable for everyone involved. Another hope and goal that I have
for this event, is that it will help to start the sourcing of
Steampunk clothing and fashion in the DC area. I am especially
interested in this, so depending on how things go we might be able to
help fund something. TO ENCOURAGE THIS WE ARE LOOKING TO HAVE A
STEAMPUNK FASHION SHOW AT THE 3RD BURNER BAZAAR WITH IS SET FOR
SATURDAY, APRIL 11TH. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN THE
FASHION SHOW PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT WE CAN
START PUTTING TOGETHER THE SHOW. To give you an idea, some of the
stuff that I will be selling there are: solar christmas lights, glow
poi, staffs, handmade patchwork wrap skirts from The Mayan Connection,
some men's clothing from the Edun collection and some other super
cool solar gadgets. I may also be hitting some of the local thrift
stores for stuff that other people simply must have.AND, THIS TIME WE
WILL HAVE SOME VEGAN CUPCAKES AND RAW FOOD OFFERINGS FROM TWO OF OUR
NEWER LADY BURNERS. Some of the vendors that we had last time included
a professional artist selling prints and offered portraits on site,
another sold professional photographs and others sold costumes and
costuming related stuff and yet another garage style type stuff.
Please let me know if you are interested in tabling or offering a
workshop or service as soon as possible so that we can make sure to
have enough tables. Bring on the sewing machines and surgers and seem
rippers and lets create some funky, fun stuff. We will have a DJ
playing some chill tunes and refreshments will be available. Speaking
of which if you want table/sell any food items, bring them on too, as
I am sure we will work up quite an appetite with all the creative
energy being spent. So, please let me know if you are interested in
tabling as soon as possible because we have a limited number of tables
and I need to know if I need to get more and how many. Also, please
let me know if you are simply interested in attending so that we can
gauge interest in this idea and prepare adequately for the number of

At long last--a beginner poi workshop!

It's been a very long time since we've had a beginner workshop and we know a
lot of you guys have been clamoring for it. We've gotten through our last
round of intermediate poi classes and now we've got a free week that we can
throw to you guys just getting started!

This Thursday from 8:30-10 PM, I'll be teaching an Introduction to Poi
workshop at Contradiction Dance (http://www.contradictiondance.com) at 7014
Westmoreland Ave in Takoma Park, MD. Here, we'll go over basics of poi, from
proper plane control to the four basic combinations of poi movement that
literally all tricks are extrapolated from. Poi has been evolving fast in
the past year, so I have every intention of throwing in a couple things that
will prepare you guys for the more exotic tricks that are making a splash in
the object manipulation world right now.

Edun collection and some other super cool solar gadgets.

Please let me know if you are interested in tabling or offering a
workshop as soon as possible so that we can make sure to have enough
tables. Bring on the sewing machines and surgers and seem rippers and
lets create some funky, fun stuff.

We will have a DJ playing some chill tunes and refreshments will be
available. Speaking of which if you want table/sell any food items,
bring them on too, as I am sure we will work up quite an appetite
with all the creative energy being spent.

So, please let me know if you are interested in tabling as soon as
possible because we have a limited number of tables and I need to
know if I need to get more and how many. Also, please let me know if
you are simply interested in attending so that we can gauge interest
in this idea and prepare adequately for the number of people who want
to attend.

we want to give an extra thanks to everyone who was there, everyone who were safeties, and performers. fire and dj's. it was Tina and my first time to ever actually put ourselves into the burner community. everyone was awesome and helpful. We couldnt have had a better birthday. History going on outside and fire going on down an alley. both within a few hundered feet or less from each other. hope we can come down and hang out again, minus a few secret service, and cops, helicopters, sirens, millions of people.

back in the Fall at Contradiction. Last week we introduced our drills and
warmups and this thursday we will play with thread-the-needles and now that
I have an hour and a half to work with, corkscrews as well. If you came to
this session in the Fall and walked out still not knowing how to do the
thread-the-needle weave, come back in and we'll set you right.

Class is between 8 and 9:30 PM this Thursday at Contradiction Dance, 7014

and converse about the many building blocks that make up this wonderfully

Call for Fire Performers for The Art of Change Inaugural Ball!

Be a part of this fun and funky historic event in our Nation's Capital!

We have an amazing lineup so far of DC, Philly, VA, MD and NY fire performers... but we still have a few slots left to fill.

We are hoping to have 30 fire performers total for 5 1/2 hours of open spin time punctuated with choreographed pieces. This will give each performer roughly 12 minutes of performance time and 12 minutes of safety duties. Most likely we'll break the group up into shifts to insure everyone gets a chance to do their thing.

Music will be provided by PLF in a 30x50 heated tent. Fire performance will happen outside the tent in a 30x50 parking lot space and will be viewable through a transparent wall to the partygoers inside. It's bound to be cold, so dress accordingly- we plan to perform even if it's snowing!

The tickets for this event are $50 each... but if you sign up as a fire performer you get in free!! Performers must have fire insurance (specialtyinsuranceagency.com) info forwarded to us, bring a can of fuel and at least one duvetine.

Hoop dance is a fun and transformative way to move your body and get in
touch with your inner child. Intended for hoopers of all abilities, each
session will combine instruction, drills, and exercises designed to improve
your hoop technique and help you to discover your own unique hoop dance.
These days, hoopers come in all ages, shapes, sizes and genders (I seriously
can't think of anything hotter than a boy hooper!) The class will also help
students develop performance skills and may focus on specific techniques
needed to fire hoop depending on interest.

Surprise! has been hooping for five years. She developed her skills in San
Francisco before moving out to Washington DC in 2007. She is an experienced
fire performer who has performed at festivals, clubs, and private events

holiday weekend. The Pajama Jam was sooo much fun last Sunday a redux is
being demanded.

By popular demand, Dance Afire will be presenting it's next Pajama Jam this
Sunday, 11/30 at Contradiction Dance right after Katie's Hoop class. The Jam
starts at 5 and runs to 8pm and *DJ Syns* has promised to share his chillest
playground set with us that evening. So put on your elastic waistbanded
pajama pants, your favorite fuzzy slippers, and come shake off those post
Turkey doldrums with your favorite play time burners.

Don't forget those pajama's folks. We are asking $5 at the door but if you
come in non-pajama attire you'll be asked to pay for the next three kiddies

Intermediate Poi Class--Thursday- November 13

Hey, all-

So last thursday was our first session and I'm pleased to report that
despite all the drills I had people do, nobody threw their poi at me
;)

Last week we reviewed concepts including the four basic combinations
of poi motion, reel turns, butterflies, and weaves as well as started
drills that will eventually lead to fun things like behind the back
weaves, meltdowns, and isolations. This week we'll be playing with
thread the needles and going back and forth between weaves and
butterfly patterns (wall-plane is your friend!) as well as adding some
drills related to flowers, buzzsaws, and more.

Class is 8-9 PM on Thursday at Contradiction Dance. If you sign up in
advance on the website (http://www. contradictiondance. com), lessons
are $10 per or $15 for drop-in. If anybody's interested in another
beginner's workshop, please reply to me offlist and let me know the
best dates for you (Thursdays and Fridays we can use the dance space).

Intermediate Poi Class--Beginning November 6th

trial and error and trial again as a poi spinner distilled into six
weeks of exercises that I know work.

To get the most out of this class, you should already be comfortable
with basic poi tricks, including the 3-beat weave, butterflies, and
reel turns.

Our first week, we'll be doing a review of these basic tricks and
working on warmup exercises that will teach you how these tricks work
and how they should mesh together in performance situations.

Once again, classes are $10 if you sign up in advance through

Poi Workshop this Thursday- 10/23

Thursday is going to be another big day here in Takoma Park. *Drex's
Beginner poi workshop* last Thursday went so well that we are offering it
again this coming Thursday 10/23. If you've been introduced to the basics
Come drill with us and stretch out those shoulders. Come pick 'em up if you
haven't. Keep in mind Drex's beginner to intermediate classes will be
starting on Nov. 6th and a firm grounding in his beginner terms and
techniques will give you a great base to start from. I'll paste the deets
below for your review.

The *Nut House Fire and Wine* gathering was a blast as well. Thanks for
being such great Burner guests and keeping the moop under control. We'll be
doing it again on the 23rd and encourage you all to come share the good time
with us (deets below). Thanks for making these events such a good time
folks. I look forwards to seeing you again soon.

Deets if you wan'em:

*Drex's Beginners Poi Workshop*, (Taught by Loup)

Where: Contradiction Dance at 7014 Westmoreland Ave, Takoma park. Just three
blocks away from the Takoma Park Metro.

When: this Thursday (10/23) at 8PM.

What: This is a beautiful space with hardwood floors and full-length
mirrors. Practicing in front of mirrors is essential for picking up
clean technique.

How: The class is $10 if you reserve a spot in advance either through the
studio (contradictiondance@mac.com) or Dance Afire (valloup@gmail.com)
$15 for drop-in.

Why: because it has never been easier or more fun to learn how.

Who: Blue is our Host, Dance Afire is providing the Fule Dump and safety.
