January 19th, 2008
Show starts at 7 PM doors open at 6:30
Tickets are $12 or two for $20
Students are $8 with ID

We have a fantastic show that has everything from Tribal to Tap Dance! We are excited to have Obsidia, Just Faburlous, Veda, Tribal Evolution, and Jessica Dawn! We also have modern dancers like Dancing Mind and Bodies, Daniel Mabry, Muscle Memory, and the tap dancing troupe the Rythem Junkies. It will be an exciting night of performances!

We will also be raising money to help support the AIDS Foundation of Houston! Just as we seek for dance to cross all boundaries, we looked for a charity that crossed many boundaries. In doing so we found the AIDS Foundation in Houston. They seek to serve many people, and they have a far reaching hand. Along with ticket sales, we have had some wonderful packages donated to help us raise money so we will be having a very small silent auction in the lobby for 3 packages for a night on the town! This is a wonderful opportunity to help raise more money for The AIDS Foundation as well as grab a night on the town for you and a friend!

Diffusion will be held in The Lyceum at The University of North Texas. 1155 Union Circle, Denton, TX 76203.

I want to extend a HUGE HUGE THANK YOU to all the wonderful dancers who came out to experiment on the Diffusion stage. And another Thank You to all the folks that came out, weathering the cold, to come see what this mix of dancers had to offer.

We tried very hard to span many styles of dance, and many themes. We sincerely hope that the range and stories were interesting to you, the audience and dance community.

We request that if you have ANY Suggestion on how to make it a better event next year, to email us and let us hear your voice, we would deeply appreciate it. Please let us know how we can better serve the dance community through this event, from the audtion process to the actual presentation.

Again, thank you performers and audience! I look forward to your feedback! if you wish you present feedback privately, feel free to email me through Tribe.net.

Diffusion: Date, Updated FAQ

Attention: Dancers!
Diffusion, sponsored by Visions in Dance is now accepting additions for our first annual
Diffusion Dance Experiment. We are looking for performers who want to push their boundaries, so the only requirement is a time limit. Mature content in both dance and music are welcome. Due to the nature of the event, we ask that all performers are over the age of 18. For more information visit http://tribes.tribe.net/dancediffusion or email Diffusion.Dance@gmail.com. Show date is Feb. 2nd, at the Forth Worth Orchestra Hall- 8pm.
Revised FAQ:

Q. "How do I auddition?"
A. You have two choices, You can send in a video tape of your piece or arrange to addtion in person before Jan. 20th.

Q. Where do I send my VHS or DVD submission to?
A.Visions In Dance
PO Box 182604
Arlington, TX 76096-2604

Q. How can I set up a personal audition?
Email: Diffusion.Dance@gmail.com

Q. Where will the performance be held?
A. Fort Worth Youth Orchestra Hall
4401 Trail Lake Drive
Fort Worth, TX 76109

Q. When is this thing going to happen?
A. Friday, Feb. 2nd 8pm

Q. Why are you making me audition? Why can't I just show up and dance?
A. We wanted a show where dancers could dance whatever they wanted AND put on a high quality show. This isn't a hafla, this is a dance performance. There are already places and events where beginners can perform.

Q. What kind of dance do I have to prepare? Does it have to be Middle Eastern Dance?
A. Your choreography does not need to have any sort of Belly Dance or Middle Eastern Dance. This is a performance open to ALL dance forms. Jazz, tap, fusion, exotic, tribal, ballet, modern, lyrical... anything goes! The more variety our show will have, the better!

Q. Is this for local performers only? I'll be visiting in town that weekend and I'd love to perform!
A. We welcome submissions from everywhere! However, we WILL NOT supply any sort of compensation for travel or provide for housing and food.

Q. Can I have a friend help me with my props?
A. Yes, but we must insist on only ONE assistant per performance.

Q. Why do I have to go to a dress rehearsal? I already know my routine.
A. You may know your rountine, but do you know the one in front of you? We need everyone present to give you the order in which you'll dance so you won't miss your cue. We are also tentantively planning a group finale piece that we'll need to teach you.

Q. My costume covers me fully, but is skin tight and flesh coloured. Will that be a problem?
A. Not all. Again, the judges will be looking to see if the costuming has a purpose to the piece, but there are no issues with flesh coloured and/or skin tight outfits.

Q. What do you mean "We reserve the right to pull performers out of the show if costuming is significantly different from the description provided to the judges?"
A. Minor changes are fine, such as a blue belly dance cabaret outfit instead of a black belly dance cabaret outfit, or a red tutu instead of a pink tutu. However, a MAJOR change as to make the costume unrecognizable, will be grounds for removal from the show. We are interested in using costuming and song to build the show around the individual performances into one beautiful synchronized whole. To do this, we need people to keep us informed of their intentions for costuming. We would still appreciate a heads up with minor costume changes.

Diffusion Submission!

Diffusion is coming! Diffusion is coming!

We at Visions in Dance have listened to music, watched dancers from all venues, and dreamed a dream: We all have songs we want to dance to. Songs that may be inappropriate for a vast majority of venues. Perhaps you have a theme you wish to explore that would not be appropriate for they typical traditional venue. It is from this dream that Diffusion was born. It will be an over 18 event, where you will be free to use music, uncut and in its most raw form. You will be free to explore themes as difficult, impossible, joyous, painful, or daring as you dream.

We are also accepting ALL forms of dance. We, ourselves, are belly dance based, and are getting this information to mostly the belly dance community, as these are the people we know. However...we are very open to modern, ballet, jazz, tap, folklorico...anything that is entertaining, well thought out, and fullfills the purpose of this event...to challenge a dancer and the audience to move beyond the traditional box. (We have already been approached by a Modern dance troupe, and are looking forward to their coming submission).

It is a juried event, so please send a video tape or DVD of intended performance with final music selection, and close approximation of intended costume. We are asking for these tapes to best build a show based on music and costume to create a whole feeling and intent to the show. We do not want to just assign people to a spot based on random draw...we are hoping to use music and costume to build a cohesive show, start to finish.

There is a time limit: Solos up to 4 minutes 30 seconds. Duets up to 6 minutes. Trios up to 7 minutes. Troupes up to 9 minutes.

As a note...if you are an ATS or Improv style troupe, we understand that a solid choreography is not possible to present. So we simply ask for a video tape of your abilities utilizing music close to what you intend (if you intend to bring arabic music, show us a vid dancing to arabic music, if you are planning to use modern industrial, show us a vid of you doing modern industrial). These improv style troupes will then need to provide us a copy of their final music selection, and a photograph of intended costuming, so we can continue to build the show with your music choice involved.

The event will be held in The Midcities, Between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, January 13, 2007, 7:00 pm.

Please send your video or dvds to:

Visions In Dance
PO Box 182604
Arlington, TX 76096-2604

The videos need to be in to us no later than: Friday, September 15, 2006. As that is when the panel of judges will be reviewing the submissions. The judges will be a mixed panel of dancers, local artists, writers, and dance enthusiasts.

If you have ANY questions, please feel free to contact me through Tribe at any time, and I will get back to you with your answers ASAP!

Sincerely and with Vision for evolving dance,
Jenn

Welcome! A Dancer's Introduction.

Welcome to the world of Diffusion: The show for experimental, on the edge cultural dance. Hosted by Visions In Dance, the show will feature dancers from all over the dance community. The performance will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007. This is a show where you can dance to the music that moves you, in the costume that most exemplifies the essence of the song you have chosen. This show will be closed to minors, so your song and costume choice will be open to a broad interpretation, with no need for creative editing to make the song family appropriate.

Even so, we're not doing this thing willy nilly. Here are our rules:

1. This show is juried. There is an audition process where tapes will be submitted and then judged by a panel of ten judges. Half of our panel are dancers and half are not; we included regular ol' folks so as to be more in touch with the general public.

2. VHS or DVD recordings of your dance need to be submitted to our judge panel by Friday, September 15, 2006. We're not asking for professional taping, directing, and lighting, just that the judges need to be able to see what you're doing and be able to hear your music. Full costuming is not necessary but we need a complete descripition of your costume intentions, whether you describe the costume in full detail on the tape or in writing or draw a picture of it. We will need to provide the description to our judges at the time of the judging. Any costume changes made after submission must be sent in to our judges for further approval.

3. Costuming can be no less than a string bikini, with a full backed bottom (i.e. no thong) and the costume must fit and enhance the dance. We must ask that you not wear a bikini just to wear a bikini. Costuming is a part of our art form and therefore must have a purpose.

4. Any props wanted for your performance- backdrops, veils, chairs, canes, wings, fake trees, whatever- must be able to be placed before the segment and removed afterward by The Dancer and cannot take longer than 30 seconds. It is a small back stage area and simply not enough room for a bunch of stage hands to be waiting.

5. Time limits for performances are as follows: Solos up to 4 minutes 30 seconds. Duets up to 6 minutes. Trios up to 7 minutes. Troupes up to 9 minutes.

6. Any dancers selected by the judges to perform are required to attend a dress rehearsal the morning of the performance. Any performers who do not attend dress rehearsal will not perform that evening in the show.

7. We reserve the right to pull performers out of the show if costuming is significantly different from the description provided to the judges in the submissions.

We are not limiting submissions to Belly Dance or Fusion Dance or Tribal Dance. If you have a Flamenco piece, sumbit a tape! If you are a Modern Dance group, submit a tape! We want to see the whole Community of Dance come together and put on an amazing performance without the normal restrictions placed upon our art in a normal venue. Be creative and do what you've always wanted to do!

We recommend you first read "Welcome! A Dancer's Introduction" and "Judging Criteria." These are the questions we've anticipated you asking and have provided the answers. If you have a question that isn't mentioned here then please message me through Tribe and I'll post your question with answer here. Please <b>do not</b> reply to this post with your question! We want to keep this post clean and easy to search for the answers to all of your pressing questions.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Q. Why are you making me audition? Why can't I just show up and dance?
A. We wanted a show where dancers could dance whatever they wanted AND put on a high quality show. This isn't a hafla, this is a dance performance. There are already places and events where beginners can perform.

Q. When is this thing going to happen?
A. Saturday, January 13, 2007, 7:00 pm.

Q. Where will the performance be held?
A. We are still deciding on a definitive venue. The most we can tell you is some place in the Mid-Cities. For out-of-towners, that would include Bedford, Hurst, Colleyville, Grapevine, Arlington, and Grand Prarie in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in Texas, USA. We want a central location to our urban area.

Q. Is this for local performers only? I'll be visiting in town that weekend and I'd love to perform!
A. We welcome submissions from everywhere! However, we WILL NOT supply any sort of compensation for travel or provide for housing and food. All expenses will be the dancer's responsibility. What we can do is suggest to you conviently located hotels and delicious restaurants. There are lots of both to choose from.

Q. Where do I send my VHS or DVD submission to?
A.Visions In Dance
PO Box 182604
Arlington, TX 76096-2604

Q. Can I have a friend help me with my props?
A. Yes, but we must insist on only ONE assistant per performance. There will not be enough room backstage for every dancer or group to have multiple helpers. Also, we cannot allow your assistant to go back and forth between audience and backstage, they will be backstage with you the entire performance. Otherwise the distraction will disturb other audience members.

Q. Why do I have to go to a dress rehearsal? I already know my routine.
A. You may know your rountine, but do you know the one in front of you? We need everyone present to give you the order in which you'll dance so you won't miss your cue. We are also tentantively planning a group finale piece that we'll need to teach you.

Q. The judges selected me to perform and I'm really excited! However, I just found out I'll be on a business trip until Saturday morning and I can't make the dress rehearsal. Am I kicked out?
A. If you have a legitimate conflict with our dress rehearsal requirement and cannot be at the morning rehearsal, PLEASE contact us so we can discuss the situation with you. Something such as a business trip or funeral may be worked out so you can keep your spot in the show, but we MUST be notified.

Q. What do you mean the costuming must fit and enhance the dance? Why can't I wear whatever I feel like? I love wearing bikinis!
A. We wear costumes to broaden the message we're communicating when we dance. Tribal dancers tend to wear tassels and dark colours to give a more earthy feel. Wearing skimpy or revealing clothing just 'cause is going to lessen the impact of your artistic vision. If you are dancing to "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", then wearing a bikini makes sense. If you are dancing to "When September Ends" it doesnt make sense to wear a bikini, no matter how tempting.

Judging Criteria

Judging Criteria

How can I put together a show if I don't know what they're looking for? Hopefully, these guidelines will help you focus your creative talents on just what it is you want to do. What is posted here is what the judges will told to judge on.

1. Technique. Yes, of course technique but does it need to be perfect? No. But if the judges can't tell what you're doing then neither can the audience and the impact you were hoping to provide is completely lost.

2. 2. Music. If the music is pointedly intended to be a derogatory and offensive statement at the expense of a specific race, creed, or sexual preference, then it will not be considered for the show. Use common sense, basically. Anything else you can go for... sexual lyrics, angry lyrics, political lyrics, lullabyes, etc.

3. Choreography. This one is completely a personal preference judges. The most we can tell you is anything that is too simple will be boring to the judges, and the audience, and anything that is too complicated could get overlooked.

4. Entertainer. This is your stage presence- do you smile at the right times? Does it look genuine? Do you look sad at the right moment in the music? Is your bearing, the way you project feelings, appropriate to the moment? Make sure it's something the judges will pick up on.

5. Costuming. The judges will be looking to see how the costuming meshes in with your music and choreography. The expectation is your outfit reflects your message in some way rather than having a costume just to be a costume.

6. Execution. The sum of everything. You can take different groups and teach them the same piece at the same time, but each of them will execute differently from the other. Basically, the more you practice the better you execution will be and the more the judges will like it.

Happy Choreographing!
