***Dance in the Desert***
Saturday Jan. 27, 9-5 pm, the local MECDA (Middle Eastern Culture and Dance
Association) Desert Communities chapter is holding their annual Dance Festival at the Palmdale Cultural Center, 38350 Sierra Highway, Palmdale CA 93550.

It all starts off with an exciting 2-hour *Fusion Techniques* workshop by Amara! Learn how to fuse a multitude of dance styles with your belly dance to make your personal dance style even more unique and polished. You have to know the "rules" before you can break them! Amara is a fantastic professional belly dancer and choreographer, as well as the producer of EEMED (Evening of Experimental Middle Eastern Dance) events, and she works with many well-respected dance troupes (like Desert Sin!) and dancers. We are very fortunate to have an instructor/performer of Amara's stature right here in the Antelope Valley, Do Not miss this opportunity!

The workshop is $30 in advance for MECDA members, $35 for non-members, add $5 at the door. Pre-payment is available through PayPal at DCMECDA@MECDA.ORG

Space is limited, pre-registration is highly encouraged. No refunds.

From 11 am to 5 pm the dance festival is held upstairs in the ballroom area.
Admission is $5 for MECDA members, $7 for non-members, $4 for performers.

There will be vendors, Middle Eastern food, music, friends and fun-and *you* can sign up to perform on the stage! Bring your friends and family to watch your star performance. You've worked hard in dance class all this time, now's the time to strut your stuff in a friendly, supportive environment. There are still some slots open for dancers, contact Blume at lellabellydancer@yahoo.com asap for your chance to shine on the big stage!

Afterwards; cheer on your friends, enjoy the music, admire (and buy!) the costumes, clothing, jewelry, music-necessary things, of course. Snack on tasty shish-kabob and baklava, and maybe you'll even win a raffle prize (if you get some tickets, don't forget)!

This is the big local belly dance shindig of the year, and I highly encourage folks to come out and support the dancers, instructors, dance art, vendors, and event organizers who work so hard to make your dance opportunities special all year 'round.

http://www.freewebs.com/dcmecda/showtimes.htm

There are still opportunities available for volunteers. Please contact Sedona at sedona@sedonadance.com to join our rockin' volunteer group!

Hi there everyone!

The lovely Krisha (of NisaaBenezir) and I would like to organize a red tent hafla! That’s right, a dance party/event focused on bringing the community together. Krisha had the fabulous idea of the DC, MT, and IE chapters jointly hosting it! We would like to have a meeting where we can all talk about our ideas and start organizing this. Our first meeting to discuss the hafla will be either December 10th or 11th so please get back to me and let me know how many of you are willing to come and which date is preferable. Also, we would like to have the meeting at Krisha’s in Lancaster…for those of you from the IE and other areas you can meet me at my house and we can carpool out there if that makes it more convenient.

this is what I got for picnic area fees. I’m going to call them and see what a small group/large group means. So I was wondering, how many people do we think our event would bring in? 50?100?150? or more? Also, do we need an area with a shelter, or not? I was thinking, if we did the large group site without a shelter we could always ask around for tents? Insurance is required but I know that if we contact Helen we can get that.

Small Group sites with shelter $ 50.00

Large group sites without shelter $125.00

Large group sites with shelter & additional facilities $300.00

Food/music: I was thinking that a potluck would be the best way to go…also, as far as music is concerned what do we want to do for that? Boom box? My father in law has a large dj setup but unless we got a large site with electric we wouldn’t be able to do that. I was also thinking that we should try to get some live drummers! That would be really awesome and preferable…We need to bring drinks if it is a MECDA sponsored event right?

Performers: we could just have it be open dancing/sign up at the event!

Workshops: I was talking to Marjhani we were thinking of an event where lots of people just teach something about what they know for free…so kind of like workshops but for free! We could have someone do a costume workshop, stage presence, yoga/pilates, spiritual dance, etc etc….and just have them as a separation from the group to the side. What do you think of that idea?

Entrance fee: I’m pretty sure that if we reserve a spot, parking entrance is free..usually it is $5/vehicle. If we still have to pay for the entrance fee I would say let’s keep the event fee $6 non members /$5 MECDA members. Of course, we could give a $2-3 discount for those that bring food. Basically, we just need to worry about covering the cost of the drinks and the site fee right?

I personally would enjoy either having nametags or having a welcoming/meeting where we can all tell each other our names…I feel that nametags are preferable. We can have an admissions/membership table and of course a table for flyers. One thing to think about is that in May it might be a little windy….

I say let’s just keep it simple…basically just have people bring what they can such as chairs to sit on, possibly some type of rug to cover an area for seating, fabric to cover tables, etc..and I have ribbons and stuff that we can tie to the trees to give a more ‘magical/old time feel.’ I know that the SCA as well as some religious groups have used this venue for things and I can vouch that a little bit of decoration such as ribbons and gorgeous textile tablecloths go a LONG way. The Narrows is absolutely gorgeous and we may luck out and get a spot next to the lake. Think of the picture possibilities!!!!!

So please forward this message to everyone you know…we are hoping to have it be a joint MECDA chapter hosted party…IE, DC, and MT but we have to work on getting approval.

Bring all your ideas please!
I've been thinking:
>
>90% of my family lives in New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta. So I have
>been particularly effected by Hurricane Katrina (I haven't heard from my
>brother and his family or my sister and her husband or my older brother, or
>my aunts, uncles nor cousins ). I have been thinking--can we have a
>bellydance fundraising movement (a Movement Movement?) ? I'm thinking
>everybody everywhere dance on a corner in your community with a donation
>basket this weekend for Hurricane Relief. We could Dance for Dollars?? All
>the money can go to the Red Cross.
