Nutrition and supplements

With all our busy schedules and work and school and running around from dance class to yoga and to late-night gigs (this goes without even mentioning normal life errands) – I am sure that eating properly is a challenge for many of us. Food that’s full of nutrients and vitamins is often pricy when eating out, and dragging your own lunches from home is often not practical – I guess this is more of a problem for the urban dancers. (Not eating should not be an option, considering that we need to have energy to do everything we need to do and practice dance with dedication and concentration)

I see this as a serious problem, since nutrients are obviously necessary to our health and can prevent injuries and help us dance for the rest of our lives. So the question that I have is this: what kind of vitamins/ nutritional supplements – if any - do you live by? Do you feel there is something that actually helps you feel better, or helps you focus or … for example – is a good way to protect joints…? This is a very broad question :) but any input is welcome. I am not looking for a quick-fix-magic-pill, but rather for things that can help where our diets fall short. Thoughts?

    Hi Irina,
I have been using a supplement called Emergen-C. It comes in little packets and, to me, is like Gatoraid with vitamins. It is mainly Vit C and B with some minerals. I have had problems with stomach upsets with regular pill vitamins but this you mix with water and can dilute. It also comes in a varity of flavors and is fun to drink because it fizzes up in the water!
    Hope this helps!
    Peace,
    Karen

I like the Emergen-C, too and use the one that has glucosamine and chondroitin mixed in it. Wish that they also sold it in a big container with a scoop, like the powdered gatorade. It would be so convenient to mix up a big water bottle of the stuff at the beginning of the day. I also have trouble taking pills, so I like having a liquid vitamin. Plus, I think that I drink more water when I use it. Sometimes I wonder if liquid vitamins are absorbed better, since the digestive system doesn't have to work to break down a tablet.

I would be interested in hearing how other dancers keep their energy up during busy days. I get headaches when my blood sugar drops and have a hard time eating enough to keep me level, but not so much that I start packing on the pounds.

Emergen-C is great - its a good immune system booster and a pick me up if your energy is dragging. And the kind with glucosamine/chondroitin is great for us dancers! I also take this liquid stuff (liquids are more easily absorbed than pill form vitamins for sure!) called Body Balance, a combination of phytonutrients including aloe vera and sea vegetables. It actually tastes pretty good and you can mix it in juice, smoothies, etc. I tend towards low blood sugar too and when I remember to take this regularly, I have far fewer problems with my blood sugar and weight issues. A friend who recommended it to me even says it helps balance her hormones/pms! It is by Life Force International. You can order it online or from a distributor I think. (My husband became one.) www.lifeforce.net

Green veggies--treat them as an essential you have to take daily with all meals! The energy you will get is incredible and my dancing is much better without the fatigue, allergies, etc I had before. I blend them up with fruit to make it sweet and bring it with me in a jar or Nalgene with me I'm on the go. Not too pricey and pretty easy.

Green powders are good for traveling but not the same thing. I also take vit D in the winter since there's not enough sun where I live and B12 since I'm vegan.
