Hello everybody,
I need feedback on back injury problems. I've been having lower back pain every now and then for the past three years, but it's been six months now since I started feeling pain again and it's hasn't gotten better. I used to go to a chiropractor, but this time around didn't work to ease the pain. I went to physical therapy and after nine sessions of ultrasound, heating pads and massage, I still wake up in the morning feeling stiffness in the lower back, and I haven't been able to dance, train, take classes and workout the way I used to. This week I started working out on my own 'cause I wasn't feeling well not doing anything, so I started walking 45mins to an hour, and jogging the last 5 to 7 mins of the route. I'm also planning on taking beginners yoga to start stretching out again (yes, I did lost a lot of flexibility), just once or twice a week depending on my body's feedback. Anyways people, I need feedback and support, it's not easy been lazy just 'cause it hurts, and I miss dancing (a hell lot). Thanks 4 ur attention, and as yogis say... Tue, May 29, 2007 - 7:10 AMHi Alex ~ Sorry for your pain! My first thought, as usual, is Psoas, second thought is Stronger Abs. Many dancers have tight psoas and it leads to a tilting tendency of the pelvis one way or the other (swayback or flattened lower back). One good stretch for this muscle at the front side of the low back, connecting spine, ribs, pelvis and thighs, is to lie at the side edge of a bed and let one leg hang down to the floor, keeping the low back flat on the bed. Some dancers are so flexible that you will need a higher surface to get a stretch, and if it still doesnt happen, you may need someone there to push your leg down while you keep the other knee up to your chest. You can also press the stretching leg up against your assistant and then relax and let them stretch it again. Releasing the psoas can change your pelvic posture and holding dramatically. Then of course, nice strong abs, engaged actively with awareness while you dance, will help protect your low back. But in order to develop them you need to find a good crunch that doesn't just make your psoas tighter. I recommend avoiding straightlegged situps, for starters. Often a good guideline to avoid psoas engagement and use the abs is to begin with the feet lifted to 90 degrees and do the crunches frome there.
But first, take it easy and let your body take the rest it seems to be asking for! Walking in nature sounds like a great idea. Maybe put some heat on it. Gentle yoga. Be nice. You'll be dancing again soon. -

Wed, May 30, 2007 - 7:06 AMhey, Darshan!!! about these Psoas.........if you were in a runner's lunge, dropped your back knee to the floor and pushed your pelvis slightly forward, would those be the psoas you'd be stretching? very curious!!

Thu, May 31, 2007 - 2:11 PMMost likely you get a psoas stretch there; explore your structure... if you do that stretch with the flat foot next to a table or chair, support yourself by resting that hand/arm on the chair, and reach the hand up and over that corresponds with the stretching psoas... sometimes you will find the deep muscle with this bit of side stretch. So much going on, between quads, abs, etc, it can be hard to find the psoas stretch! Plus we tend to be so flexible as dancers, even if tight... But you've probably got it there. The trick is to get it to release a bit. Also keep in mind that the arched spine can inhibit the stretching of the psoas. Gently engage the navel to decrease low back arch, and again you may find more psoas. Oh when you get it it feels so good!
