career longevity? How to dance forever?

After 11 years of dancing off and on I know I want to be involved in bellydance for a long long time. So I've switched my focus lately to really thinking about what parts of bellydance I really feel passionate about. And I'm focusing only on those areas right now.

For instance: I love doing research on the history of dance and giving lectures at the local Univ.. I just started a tribal fusion troupe that is such a joy to dance with. I'm offering workshops and doing solo performances with props. And I love teaching.

But, I"ve decided to abandon most of my restaurant type gigs. And I want to really limit the shows/events that I personally organize and sponsor.

I'm hoping this will help me not burn out on dance. And I'd like to start working on building lifelong dance projects and achievements.
What I'm interestedin is how people achieve career longevity. Not neccesarily fame or money, just people who continue to dance for many years.

I'm rambling now..... :-)

It's so refreshing to hear someone with so much forethought! To know which parts of the dance world will continue to fulfill you and which would begin to wear down your passion, and to choose the lover's path before you become tattered... Bravo!!

Like how does Morocco do it?? I don't know!! She's totally amazing. And there's other 60+ dancers out there, and many in their 50's still dancing & teaching & traveling to do workshops.
One of my friends has now totatly sworn off teaching on concrete, and says her body feels soooo much better. So WHERE you dance regularly probably has a lot to do with your longetivity.

Hi ladies! I thought I would add my 2cents to this! I'm 57 and I'm still dancing--no not professionally any more but I do take dance classes 5 days a week. Yes it is still possible! No, I'm not young but I still enjoy the dance and I figure Why Not!There are a lot of others like me too!

Yeah, I make adjustments like wearing sandals instead of going barefoot now, and i don't do any Turkish drops or low back bends any more. However, I still think there is a lot more to dancing and entertaining for that matter than back bends! I leave those to my daughter now.
I just wanted to say that there is life after 50 and dancers above all others seem to maintain their dance ability the longest! Personally I think we look the best too!

Kudos Petra on your awesome methods for moving forward and courting success! Inspiring!
And you, Zahira, thank you for your positive and beautiful approach to maximizing your dance, and a happy little note to those of us not far behind you on the timeline... happy to follow the strong women who find and do what it takes to continue to offer themselves to dance as they ripen...
My personal and professional goal is to be instrumental in developing a practice whereby the dancer's path can be one that heartens the body and spirit. I have to dance, my spirit insists; so if I find ways of making my dance as healthy as it is beautiful, then I am in the practice. It will be different per dancer. Personally I know that I need martial arts and yoga and at least one other dance form for regular study, all to balance out my dance practice and maximize its benefit to my body.
If and once I come up with a comprehensive block of answers, I will be sure to share.

Hi Darshan, I was one of your students at PURE workshop at Tribal Fest. I love your dvds! I wish we had a PURE chapter down here!

Are there more dvds planned for the future! I plan to continue dancing as long as possible--it feeds the spirit as well as conditioning the body. Dance also offers me community support--something more important we I get older. Besides, it is just plain fun!

I do intend to keep making DVDs over time... keep your eyes open! I'm so glad you're enjoying them, thank you. Actually, PURE's goal in the next several months is to make some DVDs of the choreographies and other exercises that we use for PURE, to offer more support to new and existing branches in refining the choreographies themselves and in deepening their dance and their sense of community! I think we will have 10. We hope it will strengthen the branches. Stay tuned for those and ma;ybe keep mentioning your desire for PURE to other dancers in your community; you may just be able to manifest your desire there one of these days!

Judith, I like your point about specialization vs diversification. In fact, I've found that often a balanced practice is made up of several such opposing or balancing aspects. For instance, bellydance is such a feminine practice, for me it is nicely balanced by capoeira which is somehow more masculine. Also, much of life's activity occurs just in front of the body and we can end up curling inward, closing the chest; both bellydancing and particularly Flamenco practice offset this tendency by giving the arms some work to do up and back. Opposites balance each other over time. Just give us the intuition to easily identify a balancing practice when we see it...

I have Darshan's Tribal Fusion dvd and the chakra dance dvd. I don't think she has any more out at this time. I took her PURE experiment workshop at Tribal Fest. It sounded really good to me. There is a website for just PURE which I think stands for Pure Urban Ritual Experiment. You may enjoy the site. I'm just bummed because we have so few of these kind of things here in Orange County. Anyway, check it out!

I think you're on the right track.
It's funny, I have been going through a similar process for some time now.....have been bellydancing for over a decade, but got burned out and took a break. Then I discovered Tribal as it became popular here (Seattle) and jumped on the ATS bandwagon...enjoyed that for a couple of years and got burned out again....then I started college and took some more time off, but missed the dance.
After thinking long and hard, I realized that I have certain limitations and dislikes that were holding me back- namely, I do not like to improv. I need choreography, because I have terrible stage fright and need the "comfort" of knowing what is coming next as I dance.
I also realized that "forcing" myself to accept the definitions of bellydance that my instructors believed in was also holding me back, because I wanted to be more free to explore my own style. This actually means practicing on my own for the time being.
Realizing those things has breathed new energy into my dancing, and given me more of a direction to follow, instead of drifting from one instructor/student troupe to the next.

In terms of longevity, I found that keeping up my momentum is easier when I set specific goals. For example, signing up for Darshan's class at Tribal Quest NW. I know I will be dancing then, so I want to practice between now and then so that I can benefit as much as possible from her class.
I sign up whenever I hear about a great workshop, and prepay to make sure I won't "flake out". I also put haflas and dance events on my calendar so that I am out and about in the dance community regularly. I am not ready to perform yet, but when the time comes, I will sign up to dance at events well in advance, so that I am always being "pulled forward" by the prospect of a new event or venue looming on the calendar.
As far as fame and fortune go, I am not concerned with that so much as working on becoming a better dancer constantly, and also keeping my interest in bellydance fresh by exploring new styles and discarding the aspects that no longer hold my interest.
You could definitely say I am not a "purist" when it comes to bellydance styles, but I have discovered that this is what works for me!

      Hello,

I am a mature age dancer and choreographer. I have been learning about dance since I was four years old. I have been through stages when I thought specialisation was the best way forward and then I would find something new that would interest me and I would learn more. If this makes sense, diversity and specialization together is a good method for progress. Being very particular about safe dance practices will contribute to longevity and staying up-to-date with recent developments helps with that. Most definitely the surface on which you dance will influence how your body reacts to a lot of dancing over a long period of time. Sometimes the necessity of dancing on bad surfaces can be compensated with by finding appropriate foot ware. You have to make your own judgements according to how your body reacts. Rest and good nutrition are other key issues and this is something dancers often neglect, including myself, so I have no perfect answers for that. Hope this helps.

I totally agree with you!! We are still here dancing and in fairly good shape, I might add!! I do watch my diet as I am a vegan and try to rest but that is really hard. I do tend to burn the candle at both ends though! I guess I should slow down a bit!!

Much as I love going to them I have resolved to take less workshops and attend fewer events next year. I booked a lot of events far in advance this year and then realized when I saw them all on the calendar that I didn't have a single month when I didn't have some hugh event happening. With the explosion of dance in the last few years you just can't do everything anymore or you just end up exhausted. I'm going choose with a little more forethought and try to leave myself room to breathe now and then!

I like to do S Factor stuff too! I find that working with a pole really does increase my upper body strength and cardio stamina as well. Yeah, it's a girly thing too but it has definite strength-promoting advantages much like Karate probably does! I think it is good to diversify also. I also do yoga. Somehow it all seems to fit together for a more balanced program.

Hi, I think it's better I put my question here at the end of this long list of posts:-)
Wich Darshan and PURE dvd were you talking about?
I only know NYC tribal fusion and Chakra dance, are there more???
And the only other Pure dancer I know with her own dvd is Sera....Did I loose something?:-)))

Those are the only 2 out YET... Soon there will be more, specifically at least one more instructional and probably a couple of performance ones. And, this year PURE is planning to make a comprehensive DVD library for the branches, including the choreographies and other goodies. That's it!
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

I know I should be living in SFO or at least Northern California. I seem to resonate more with folks from there. I think that the atmosphere is definitely more conducive to creative expression! I'm a vegan and have been dancing for many moons. I definitely don't fit into the Newport Beach set. However, I'm still going strong. I credit the dancing and the diet for both!I really think that it makes a difference.

    Hi Chirsty,

Any chance you'd be interested to work on producing New York's second annual dance parade? This past May we had 4000 dancers from 50 genres, many of whom were bellydancers, dance down Broadway and Fifth Ave and then end in WSP where we had a 4 hour dance festival.

We're looking for passionate dancers who have an interest to join our leadership team in business planning, marketing, outreach and production.

I've been dancing for almost 30 years. I drove from Fort Worth to Dallas Friday & Saturday nights dancing in the clubs/restaurants every weekend...sometimes 2-3 restaurants a night, and sometimes a bellygram thrown in for good measure. I also worked the local renaissance faire for 13 years (5 shows a day on Saturday & Sundays) for 8 weeks during the spring/summer, then run to Dallas and do two shows into the wee hours of the night. I thought at 40 I would retire from club dancing, but found I still had the energy & stamina to keep going for another 8 years. At 48, I decided I had had enough of the long drive & late nights.. I also run a large dance studio in Fort Worth. I also realized that club dancing for me can't last forever, so I decided to put more energy into my studio. I do love to perform, it is my passion, I can still do backbends & floor work that I did in my 20's, but teaching is also my passion. I love to see the catapillar turn into the butterfly. To fulfill my passion of performing, I occasionally perform at a Lebanese Restaurant in Fort Worth and I'm done by 10 pm and only have a 15 minute drive home, instead of staying in Dallas until 2 am and doing a 30-45 minute drive home. I do more bellygrams, and make more money in less time than being in a club. I've also started doing alot of bachelorette & girl birthday parties where I do a short performance & teach the group a short simple choreography. What a deal & the money is good. My studio puts on two hafla's (recitals) a year where my students can shine & I can perform too. I also sponsor one workshop a year (I had the honor of sponsoring Darshan last year - she was fabulous!) and I can perform at that too. I'm now 50 and know that the day will come when I shouldn't be performing, but I feel that I can continue to teach as long as my body will let me, or train teachers to carry on the dance I love so much. Well, that's my
      fidy cents.
