Anyanka started taking bellydance classes at a local community center in August 2005. Having taken classes for 2 years back in the early 90’s, Anyanka knew the basics of bellydance and joined Dancers of De Nile in October 2005 with her daughter, Emishka, for their first duet performance. After being away from bellydance for 15 years, Anyanka started dancing again as a form of exercise and a way to meet new friends.

She currently takes Cabaret style classes with Badrea, Director of Dancers of De Nile, Fundamentals of Bellydance with Kahlea of NATIUM World Dance and will be starting Kahlea’s Tribal Style classes in April 2008. Anyanka has also taken classes with Gladys, and Melissa Billings. She has taken local workshops from Yasmina of Hipnotic Hips and from the infamous Sharon Kihara of Bellydance Super Stars and The Indigo. She was nervous to take a workshop from such a super star but found out that Sharon is a big lovable goofball. Anyanka has performed bellydance at the AZ County & State Fairs, Over Coffee, Maqbool’s Boutique, and Layalena restaurant.

Anyanka’s favorite thing about bellydancing is that any type of body shape can bellydance – from thin to Goddess. She believes it is important to instill in young girls that you do not have to be thin to dance & look beautiful.

Another big favorite is the costumes. Anyanka says costumes have taken over her walk-in closet and her regular street clothes were forced to take shelter elsewhere. She has lost count at over 100 skirts, some of which have not been worn yet. She admits that once she caught the bellydance bug, she became an Ebay addict. Her current favorite types of costumes are geared towards the Gypsy Style as she feels they better suit her personality. Her favorite color for costuming is black because any color can be added to it.

Although Anyanka enjoys all types of bellydance music, her current favorites are Turku – Nomads of the Silk Road; Gypsy Caravan & Friends – Migration; and the Kabila Project, a compilation by various artists. She says they bring out the hidden gypsy in her.

Aside from bellydancing with Dancers of De Nile, Anyanka is also a crew member of Ship Ecstacy in the AZ Corsairs. Visit the AZ Corsairs at azcorsair.ning.com.
