I'm feeling discouraged. I'm about halfway through my second year of bellydance lessons, taking the intermediate/mixed class.

The first year was a struggle - a struggle I expected, because I'm very much challenged by dance and by movement. But I felt like, finally, I was getting it. I was taking two classes a week - one beginner, and one mixed. The very cool part of that was that the beginner class felt easy - well, maybe not easy, but I understood it, and got the moves. That helped with the mixed class, as I was the least experienced dancer in that class, and focusing on the basics in the beginner class was very useful in putting it together in the mixed class.

This last summer, I dropped back to one class a week - financially, I needed to do it. Plus, it was hard to have two nights a week that were off-limits because of dance class - especially when we started doing swing dance lessons on yet another night each week. This fall, I stayed with one class weekly. On my teacher's recommendation, I stayed with the intermediate/mixed class.

But I'm just not getting it. I'm leaving class feeling like I might as well have stayed home. In this class, there's a lot of follow-the-leader. By the time I've figured out what move I'm supposed to be following, we're onto a different move. We've been learning to dance with sticks - which I HATE. I can't twirl the darn stick the way I'm supposed to, and it feels ... eh. I don't like the moves, I totally lack any sort of enthusiasm for this. I'm not driven to WANT to learn it. I'm not even working up a sweat. At least before, even if I didn't get the moves, I felt like I was ACTIVE, that eventually I would get it.

I haven't talked to my teacher about this yet. I kept thinking that I was maybe having an off night (ok, off nights for 3 months), that I would feel better about it next week. Last night we did a lot of improvising with the sticks - and all I wanted to do was toss the stick out the window. I'm not good with improvising to start with, and add that stupid stick - it was not a positive experience. The sticks don't feel like dancing to me. Though she said last night that we wouldn't be doing the sticks again til March.

So now I'm wondering if maybe I need to switch back to the beginner class. I'm ok with spending 95% of the class feeling inept, as long as I get that 5% of "Hey, I get this!" It's the 100% inept classes that are discouraging me. I hate feeling like the slow, problem child - too old, too fat, too clumsy, too slow, with the rest of the class all getting it right.

Is this common? Do other dancers at this stage of learning have this problem? Is it just something I need to work through? Or maybe I need to focus more on practicing at home, and not worry so much about the class.

"You know thats really bad though right... it actually pushes out your belly muscles... most want them flat! lol"

I haven't heard of this before - what does she mean by this? A friend of hers she said used to teach belly dancing and that it what she told my sister and one of the resons she stopped teaching, and dancing.

(I reposting this here from the bellydance drills tribe)

Dance students without previous training sometimes find themselves stumped when trying to put together a practice session. So I'm posting this in the hopes that it might help some of you.

You have to look at your dance practice sessions in a different way than you would, say sports practice.

What do you hope to accomplish during a practice session? (any of the following)

1. Drill technique on movements that are challenging.
2. Drill technique on movements that AREN'T challenging, but you don't want to start looking sloppy.
3. Learn new choreographies or combinations from videos.
4. Create your own choreographies or combinations
5. Rehearse choreographies you already know.
6. Practice dancing and playing finger cymbals
7. Practice improvisation skills
8. Practice performance skills
9. PLAY with dance -- interpret, emote, improvise, have fun!

I think a lot of us tend to view belly dance as an activity to be mastered, and we tend to forget to actually have FUN with it. Instead of calling it "practice time" call it instead "studio time." See how that changes the expectations?

If you can allocate an hour every day you will absolutely notice progress faster than if you just do it on weekends, or for an hour here and there.

(Most adult learning research suggests that doing something for a short period of time EVERY day, at the same time of day leads to greater success than "cramming" all your practice into one or two days a week.)

I tell my students the bare minimum is 20 minutes a day EVERY day. That's really not much, and is easy to schedule into the busiest of lives. Depending on what you want to accomplish, 20-90 minutes of daily practice should be your goal.

First figure out your goal -- are you hoping to go pro? If so, 20 minutes a day is not going to cut it. Do you want to0 be considerd an accomplished soloist? Try 45 minutes a day. Just want to master what you've already learned? You will require less daily practice than the aspiring pro. Be realistic in your goals. Don't forget you have other hobbies and family and work obligations. Don't bite off too much or you'll just depress yourself.

Look at your studio time on a monthly calendar, instead of a daily one. This is a rough approximation, but you basically have four weeks, of seven days each.

So, why not block those 7 days and 4 weeks into different goals.

For instance, you could say on Mondays and Wednesdays, I'm going to drill technique for 15 minutes on movements I'm already comfortable with. Just so they don't look sloppy.
On Friday I will practice performance skills or practicing new cymbal patterns for 15 minutes.

On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I'm going to drill technique on challenging movements for 15 minutes, then play for 15 minutes, doing whatever I want, to whatever music I want, just focusing on having fun with dance.
(There, now M,W, and F you have 45 minutes of "syllabus." :)

On Tuesdays and Thursdays maybe you'll work choreography or combinations, either creating your own or learning someone else's, and practice dancing with zills or props, or whatever. On Saturdays you'll work with one specific video of your choice, practicing it for a month or as long as needed. On Sundays you can rehearse choreographies you already know. For 20 minutes on Tues, Thurs, Sat, and Sun you can put on music and work on improvisation skills.

The you can figure once a month -- say the first Saturday of the month -- you can do a self-evaluation and decide what needs to be added to or taken away from your MWF drills.

If you work with videos a lot, take one day out of the month, for example, the first Sunday of the month, and review videos you've already mastered.

Does this make sense at all? The idea is if you break up what you want to accomplish into manageable "chunks" you'll see improvement and success faster. And if you can break up the month or the week, (or even the year if you're really ambitious) into scheduled chunks, you might find you get more accomplished than if you just work from day to day.

But don't forget to block time for FUN. Where you go to your "studio" (even if' it's just a corner of your bedroom) and just dance for your own self, not performing, not practicing, just moving to the music -- whatever music you want. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and an uninspiring performer :)

OK, Here;s an idea started by a few of my friends as part of their blogs- I do not know if this is too personal to share as just a part of a topic post, but I thought I'd try. Like everyone, I go through phases of feeling tremendously sorry for myself and only when I break it down to the very basics do I get slapped in the head with it- I ought to remain grateful for the big things, the little things, the people in my life- and when I do this, I realize that not everyone is so lucky. My mom says, "there but for the grace of God, go I"- I love that.

I know this is a deeeeeeepppp topic for a weekend, but I bet we can all think of 3 different things, each and every day- (even if you don't post them, you know what they are :) to be grateful for:

Because I am proud of this experience: I will go first.

1. Being able to be there for one of my best friends, Trent, last night when he had a really hard time. For once, knowing just the right thing to say.

2. I am going backstage at the OPRY tonight! I love going there! I'm taking my camera and will surely post some cool photos.

3. For coffee with vanilla caramel creamer. Some people have to drink it black, or with cream and sugar, or with milk! Love me some vanilla caramel creamer!

So, see how easy that was... 3 things.... different ones each day... and if you cannot find 3 new things to be grateful for each day, I'd have to say you're not looking.

My in-laws are coming in from California on Friday, and we'll have them all weekend. I made a HUGE batch of lasagna for dinner, and I made a few extra since it's my turn to bring homemade lunch for work tomorrow.

So... now I have to go put them together... the sauce has been cooking since 3pm... and smells fabulous! Can't wait, I love me some lasagna!

I think we're going to go to the Nashville Zoo on Saturday. They have 3 new giraffes and they're supposed to be some rare kind, and it's a new exhibit- so if it's nice, that's where I'll be!

So, do tell what y'all are planning this weekend :)

It was my first class focused on belly-dance . . . I took the Elizabeth Strong work-shop, which was WONDERFUL, but, it wasn't what I was expecting. It was based on a lot of foot work and the like - and what I was searching for was rolling of the stomach, arm snaking, etc.

That's exactly what I got at her class. I loved the variety of people there. There were all shapes and sizes . . . ages . . . there was even a guy. It made me SO happy to be in such an accepting environment.

Doing things in a group environment has always been a THOUSAND more times productive than when I am going solo . . . this class was wonderful.

I feel like I should be typing more, but, I am afraid of ranting and of what to say . . .

I can't wait to go back the next two Mondays.

I ended up finding out that one of her students is opening a class in May WAY closer to where I live, which is a relief for my gas-bill and me.

Now, apart from backbends, I can't think of many belly dance moves that require any kind of flexibility, so I guess it's easier to be an experienceless beginner in this dance than most others, but is that really so? Being flexible is nice, but do we as belly dancers benefit from (better-than-average) flexibility -when we dance-?

I'm really just wondering if I should incorporate some yes-you-DO-bend-that-far-that-way excercises into my (kind of almost) daily practice routine or if I can spare myself the agony and be a happy healthy dancer anyway.

Aziyade knows all about it, I cried to her so much over it, but to simplify, I wanted so much more from her than she was able to give. I had a hard time learning some dance steps and doing moves that just weren't comfortable on my overweight body. I wasn't always large, I was quite thin before I graduated high school. As most everyone here, I did not have prior dance training. Bellydance moves as I started to learn from Veena and Neena videos and later from my teacher, came so easily to me. They felt so good. That is why I couldn't understand why I was getting so frustrated with classes and didn't want to go at times. Only recently, through a lot of searching and blogging and posting and discussing, I figured out what it was that worked for me and what didn't in my dance. I hate boxes, being put into one or trying to stuff myself into one. It really brings out the rebel in me. But, thankfully, after talking to so many of you on private messages I was able to see exactly what the prob was for me and that I wasn't alone.. I am so much happier than I have ever been in my dance. I finally feel like I can move on and feel successful. I can let go of all that was holding me back and start a new chapter. Thank you all for being a part of it!
Ashley and I just won 1st place in our college talent show!!

What's funny is, afterward we had to go to the student life office to fill out a paper concerning where to send the check, and a little boy (like 4 or 5) was in there with his aunt and her daughter, a girl that also danced in the show (won 3rd), and when he saw us, he said "they're ugly!" and the lady said, "they're not ugly, they're just different"

I don't know swing, or the foxtrot or salsa. Even though we're partly Polish, I never could really figure out polka. (insert Polish joke here)
Growing up, I never had an opportunity to learn any sort of group choreography. This means no cheerleading, no marching band, no drill team, gymnastics, figure skating, etc. But I've always LOVED dancing - alone in my room, at the school dance, club hopping, and now I am obsessed with bellydance, my only formal dance training.

For the most part, I didn't have too hard of a time learning bellydance, because I always loved to dance and I was very comfortable with my body. But finally the moment came that frustrated the living hell out of me. I'm talking the day we did footwork.

I wanted to cry, I had no idea where these steps were coming from. The whole room got it except for me. I couldn't figure out which way to turn, which foot to use, which way to go. I was always fine learning combinations, until we started travelling steps. Once you threw in a turn or a pivot or a few steps, forget it.
Overtime, I finally got the hang of it, having a teacher that really broke things down to tiny detail, and reviewed a lot. It helped me learn quicker during more advanced classes or workshops.

But still, I would say my weak spot is learning footwork.

What's yours?

I am really liking the idea of making up non-traditional costumes, maybe taking clothes you might wear out to a club and spicing it up. Or even just the jeans idea and adding sequins or fringe or what-have-you and dancing at parties with friends or just at home or something. I find that what held me back alot from just plain ol' dancing is that it is set up when you take classes and such, that you are supposed to look a certain way depending on what style of bellydance you do. There is a difference between performance kind of bellydancing where there are embellishments and well, the words elude me at the moment, but it is a different look and feel than when you are just going to town on the dance floor at a wedding or in your living room. However, it is still very special to me, this dancing and wanting to dress it up a bit. I love to doll myself up and get all pretty and shiny and glam even if it is just in the middle of a Sunday afternoon for whoever family member is hanging around..lol...I am not sure what exactly I am trying to say. Maybe, it's just that I wonder how great it would be if classes were equally geared towards the living room dancer. Maybe it still applies for those like me as well. I just know that there does seem to be more of an emphasis on dancing for Joe Public. I hope something of all this makes sense.
