Hi everyone!!!
well, I miss you allready! there really is no place like home and the special people there...
here is some news from me
well, another day down, almost... and today was easier, but also sad, because trygve leaves tomorrow for the red sea, and I'm going to be here alone... so far I have not managed to find our hostel on my own, so I can imagine myself sending desperate sms's to trygve, help Help HELP!!!anyone got a gps I could borrow next time???
oh well, we have booked for our nile cruise and I'm looking forward to that, it should be a more relaxing experience than that of downtown cairo... I'm sipping whiskeys in the evenings, to try and calm the nerves, and downing rescue remedy during the day so I'm feeling pretty spaced out. don't know if it's still a bit of jet lag or if my blood pressure is low, but I'm feeling quite dizzy most of the time. it might just be the heat. the local drink of choice is karkaday tea, hot or cold, which is hibiscus tea that's deep burgundy and very sweet. delicios and supposedly very good for the blood pressure...
we have eaten kesheri which is a mixture of rice, lentils, noodles, spagetti and tamato sauce with lemon sauce or an extreeeeeeeeemly hot chilli sauce. so far that's ALL we've eaten...my tummy is twice it's usual size... trygve and I are farting up a storm... he laughed so hard when I told him I'd been farting all day... I'd never normally admit to such a thing...
and I can't admit I'm going to put that on tribe!!!!!d
I even drank coke today, just to get a bit of a sugar rush, and then poor Trygve couldn't keep up with me when we were walking back to our hostel!
booking our nile trip and flights from cairo to aswan took the whole day... truly, a whole day just to book a trip. at home we could make a 5 minute call and it would be done.
For every nice person you meet here, there are atleast 2 who try to rip you off... yesterday we paid 60 pounds for a sim card, and today at another store they charged us 20... at one restaurant we paid 11 pounds for a meal, and at another we paid 40 for the same thing.... and everyone can think of a brilliant reason why you should not do what you are doing, and should rather go with them, inevitably to their perfume shop where you are embalmed with all sorts of essences, some lovely, some disgusting, but all overwhelming. the good thing is that my galabaya still smells lovely, even in this heat and after wearing it for 2 days. (I must go and buy another one, I don't know how long the perfume will last...) this morning when we were trying to draw money the excuse was that the atm would swallow our card and this guy would show us a better atm, but the atm was in El tarhir street, and he took us down tal ha taab street... hopefully we have wisened up to their tricks.
the egyptian women still wear about as much make up as they did back in pharonic times, and if you think I wear alot of make up you should see these ladies!
there is internet access at the hostel where we are staying, so atleast for these few minutes infront of the pc, I feel relatively at home... so you'll be hearing from me frequently.
I LOVE you all sooooooooooooooooooooooo much. I can't wait to see you all again in July, Insh Allah!
with love
your bewildered teacher and friend
PS< my course starts tomorrow... 7 hours of dancing and lectures a day for 7 days... hectic. I hope I'll be half the size when i return...

Re: Egypt
Sun, June 3, 2007 - 2:18 PMHi Tenille,
So good to hear from you!
I know first hand how scary and strange it can be to be in a foreign country and not understand the local custom and culture. Don't worry, you'll be fine! If Egyptians are anything like Israelis (and I'm pretty sure they are) then they are a nation of rude, pushy and loud people. Don't be afraid to also be rude, pushy and loud!!
Hope you have a great time, and that you bring back lots of great memories and new knowledge!

Re: Egypt
Sun, June 3, 2007 - 10:47 PMHi T, wow i dont think i could have ever imagined that it would be so hectic. Atleast you will be dancing for the next few days. You should meet up with some normal people then and im sure there you will get reliable tips.
We miss you dearly too, and if anyone ever thought that you are not as busy if not more so than havinga 9 to 5 job, well boy have i got news for them.......
Even though things is going well and running smoothly, we still miss you dearly, terribly terribly so!!! But please know that you have to eventually leave that place and come back to the rainy weather we are having (which im sure you missing too).

Re: Egypt
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 7:14 AMWe MISSSSSS YOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUU!
Cairo does sound quite overwhelming and bewildering - and Amy's right when she says you just have to be assertive back. But in my experience you land up feeling resentful that you have to (and wish everybody would just let you wander around in peace!)
But, just think how fabulous it will be floating down the nile in a weeks time....
We cant wait for you to get back and teach us all the wonderful new things you have learned. Perhaps you can do a Saturday workshop, or even a series of them for us.....
lots of hugs

Re: Egypt
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 2:15 PMHi there girls...
wow... 18 hours of dancing in the last 3 days.... my body is aching!
but it's amazing. so challenging. the egyptian style encompasses quite a bit of ballet, so lots of arabesque's, spins etc... so my brain is also struggling to keep up. but the teachers are wonderful, when \i look at Farida, who is now 67, I just want to cry. such a special spirit and her love of the dance is so intense...
got a lecture about dancing barefoot.... no go here. and was told that i look like i'm wearing a chastety belt... so must learn to open up the pelvis more... so strange considering what I have learnt and how i feel about the dance... then did a bycicle hip in the choreography section today and was told it must be a south african invention, but they like it...
again.... wow, what an experience. am definately growing as a dancer and as a person...
and have ordered 2 costumes.... can't wait for you to see them....
I love you all so much and look forward to sharing pictures, stories and new dances...
love

Re: Egypt
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 5:50 AMI have noticed that on the bellydance superstars DVD a lot of them wear heels while dancing.
I have also noticed (having tried it) that some of the moves are a lot easier with heels (almost like cheating) - you get the same effect as if your knees were really bent so you can lift out of your waist more (i hope that make sense)
For someone like me with tight achilles tendons who finds bending at the knees without lifting the heels quite hard, its MUCH easier with heels.
BUT having said that, I think we look more "authentic" barefoot....... -

Re: Egypt
Fri, June 8, 2007 - 4:42 AMYes, especially in Sonja's Drum solo DVD I thought a lot of those moves looked prettier with heels on (the hip drops down-shimmy up and drop kicks while turning)
But alas, heels are not good for my flat feet so I'm content with our barefoot style. -

Re: Egypt
Fri, June 8, 2007 - 11:51 PMHi there everyone!!
thanks for all the good wishes, it sounds like you're all having an amazing time in the tribal classes. lets see if we can make it a regular slot...
well, I caved in and ordered another costume... going for a fitting this evening... and this one I think is going to need heels... maybe we'll give it a try. I've been wearing flat shoes for travelling and am finding my calves and achilles tendons are very stiff without them.
yesterday we had a full day of music lectures and demonstrations... I was so tired by then that I ended up in tears, the emotional music, the long days, the lack of decent food... all caught up with me, but today I feel great.
we went to see Soraya, a famous brazillian belly dancer last night and she was amazing, I took a little video of her, so I'll show you when I get back. it seems that here a standard accessory is implants... her show started at 1:30am... to give you an idea of the way egyptians live...
Today we have costume lectures which will be very interesting so I'm really looking forward to that.
I have decided to take up ballet lessons, in order to learn more spins, arabesques etc... so be prepared for those which we'll be introducing shortly... the russians ruled here for a short while so ballet had a very strong influence on egyptian dance.... that's been hard for me to master, since I only did ballet for a year as a little girl.
Liza Laziza, a famous dancer in egypt is in the class with us, so that's quite exciting, to be learning not only from but also with the best... she and Mahmoud Redda will be coming to SA in October, so I've offered to host them, which will be very exciting!
Senta from Maya dance company in Durban is also here and we get along very well, so we've been planning all sorts of studio swop/duet/crossover type things... Marina, from the Ukrain, who you've seen at the SA belly fest, is also here, so SA makes up a large part of the workshop this time....
We had a teacher called Nesma who is Spanish and who is so beautiful and soft and feminine, right up my alley.... I loved her style and can't wait to watch her dvd when I get home.
oh, and we went to the Halla Moustafa, who designs all of Sonia, belly dance superstars, costumes... I touched Sonia's new bra... I'm a bit star struck!!! but her costumes range in price from 1000 to 2000 USD... so I didn't order one of hers... so if fee's suddenly go up when I get back, you know where the money's going!!!
I love and miss you all and look forward to sharing all these exciting new things with you...
lots of love
