Re: Distortion of beauty...
Tue, March 13, 2007 - 1:53 PMHi,
I have seen this, and it is quite amazing, and shocking.
I'm secretly a make-up artist (I'm not actually working in the industry) so i know all about the tricks that one can achieve with make-up, and how to apply it for photographs etc. What they do to her with make-up is fine in my opinion, as this is something that any woman can achieve with the proper products and training. Its amazing what even a little bit of make-up can do to light up a woman's face. You can see instantly how much better a woman feels about herself when she has that extra little bit of sparkle and glamour.
But the digital manipulation of the photographs is really stepping over the boundaries. Nobody looks like that! What's the point of hiring a model at all if they are going to distort her like that? Why not just use digital art? It's this which upsets me - women are striving to look like covergirls and adverts, when in reality nobody looks like that! Not even the models. I always tell people to look at the fashion shoots inside the magazines if they want to see what beautiful people really look like (albeit skinny model-type people) without digital manipulation.
One of the best things I ever saw was an expose which Femina did on the digital manipulation of magazine covers. They don't use that kind of technique on their covers. They had an 8 month pregnant staff member go pose for a photo shoot. Then the computer artists digitally erased her baby bump! If they can erase a bump that big from a woman, then they can do anything!
Any by the way, all those eyelashes you see in mascara adverts are false. Nobodys eyelashes look like that.
I also truly believe that the first human looking robots will come not from the computer or robotics industries, but from the fashion industry.

Tue, March 13, 2007 - 2:25 PMHere are some very interesting links, showing what can be done with photo retouching. Both of these sites have numerous examples.
The first site is quite extreme, and is also an example of some amazingly poorly done make-up.

Re: Distortion of beauty...
Fri, April 20, 2007 - 5:00 AMWOW!! From ugly duckling to swan using makeup and technology!
Whilst we might be striving towards an ideal that doesnt exist, I think it would be equally helpful to look at it from another perspective - we all could look like supermodels if we were prepared to have that sort of manipulation. I could also be on a billboard if I wanted my face to be recreated in that maner - I just choose not to!
Like T says - here s to all the women who are beautiful from the inside......(bellydancers especially!!!)
