I've found it online, and my interest is piqued… but I'm finding an awful lot of non-information. Like, it assumes you've already been there and know the format and know what to expect. But I haven't and I don't.

I have family in the area, but… this is the kind of thing where if you're not interested in it it's just more inconvenience and traffic.

What do I want to know? Is it dance and dancer-friendly? Is it just a bunch of shows in various places, or are there, like, crafts and booths/tables, and whatnot to see? Is music sort of "happening everywhere" or only in specified locations? Is there stuff to do and see that isn't one of the big nightly showcases?

I just want to get a feel for whether this is something I want to put money towards or not. (When I could just visit my family without having something else to do.)

Hi folks,

My summer classes will be starting up next month. Since lots of people (myself included) are in and out of town during the summer, I'm going to focus on improv work both in Level I and Level II, rather than a focused progression of new moves-- we can always use more practice at putting the moves/cues together and working with our zills.

Also, since people are in and out of town during the summer, I'm changing the price structure for my classes. I'll still have the drop-in rate at $10/class or $15 for both classes for folks who can only come occasionally. But I'm also introducing a punch-card payment option instead of paying for the full session up front. With the punch card, you pay for a block of classes at once (minimum 4 weeks, maximum 10) at only $8 per single class, or $12 per week if you plan to take both Level I and Level II. The punch cards will only be good through the summer, and will not apply to the fall session.

Dates: Thursdays, June 11-August 13
Times: Level I: 7:30-8:25 / Level II: 8:35-9:30

Participants are welcome to bring rugs, pillows, etc. Musicians are welcome to bring their instruments, and dancers should come prepared to dance!

Hello,

Here's a bit on who we are and what we're about:

Dark Side Tribal, based in Bloomington, is a collaboration of Molly Mitchell, Heather Pund, and Ann Shaffer. All three have studied
cabaret, folkloric, and American Tribal Style (ATS) bellydance for many years, and have performed together in several Bloomington-area dance troupes. Molly also teaches classes in ATS bellydance. Dark Side Tribal is a recently-formed project dedicated to classic ATS and newer tribal fusion styles of bellydance.

After pondering for a bit, we decided that we really need a public forum as a place to post what we're doing and to keep up with the rest of the dance community. In addition to presenting finished work to the public, part of our mission in dancing together is to facilitate our own movement studies and connect with other dancers. Hence this tribe. If you join, please tell us a little about yourself, what you're up to and why you're here.

I'll start - I found belly dancing in college when I came to Indiana University. I started taking classes with Donna Carlton my freshman year in cabaret/folkloric style dance and met Ann through Donna's advanced class. As my awareness of the dance world increased, I started taking ATS classes from Angie Dintaman and fell in love with tribal style. I would describe myself as primarily an ATS/fusion dancer, though I do study flamenco and cabaret belly dance as well. Ann and I danced together for a while in Angie's ATS troupe, Pangaea (now Tribal Bloom), and then with Different Drummer Belly Dancers. I met Heather through Different Drummer as well. The three of us gelled around our combined love of Tribal and Tribal Fusion belly dance, and Dark Side is the offspring of that.

I currently teach classes in beginning tribal with Ann in the style Angie taught us. I also sew a lot of my own costuming - being a textiles major in college, I'm a geek for all things crafty.

Ladies? Care to fill in the gaps?

-Molly

HIPNOTIC
Tribal Belly Dance from Chicago

Saturday December 6, 2008
Bloomington, IN

Hipnotic has been performing in the Chicago area since 2002. With a firm foundation in American Tribal Style, they have integrated African, Indian, Hip Hop, Gothic and Flamenco styles to make their performances interesting, colorful and mesmerizing. They are dedicated to bringing a fresh look to tribal style belly dance and truly believe in the power of the troupe, as well as the energy created within when dancing.

Belly Dance Workshops
10 – Noon: Floored! - A Turkish Drop Workshop (Limit 10 participants)
The Turkish Drop is a well-known belly dance move. Though it is not performed in traditional Egyptian styles of dance, it can be found in Turkish Belly Dance as well as other styles of dance such as Flamenco and many dancers add it to their fusion choreographies, and tribal stylizations. The Turkish Drop requires a combination of strength and flexibility to be done correctly to minimize injury. This workshop explores the physical requirements of performing a safe Turkish Drop.

1:30 – 3:30: Action Extraction - Cues From Choreography
How many times have you taken a workshop with a 5 minute choreography? How many times do you remember the choreography? That's what we thought - we don't remember them either! This workshop is designed to help you pull out choreography moves that you want to tribalize! Learn how to identify the beginning, middle and end of the move and ideas on HOW to end them. Use this skill to create moves from your favorite belly dancing DVDs!

Performance – 7:30 pm
Don’t miss seeing Hipnotic live in performance, along with Dark Side Tribal and other amazing dancers! If you’re interested in performing in the show, contact Dark Side Tribal at darksidetribaldance@gmail.com.

Location
Both workshops and the performance will be held at Harmony School, located at 909 E. 2nd Street in Bloomington, IN.

Cost
Turkish Drop workshop: $40 ($50 after Nov. 13)
Action Extraction workshop: $30 ($40 after Nov. 13)
Both workshops: $60 ($80 after Nov. 13)

Tickets to the show are $10 (or $8 with student ID)

Level 1 will continue to focus on drilling fundamental movements, muscle articulations, introducing the standard ATS group formations, and working with zills, while Level 2 will address some extended aspects of tribal improv, including use of veils, an intro to kind and gentle floorwork, and conscious control of performance presence.

Dark Side Tribal will be performing this Saturday night, August 16, up in Muncie, IN at a benefit hafla for the Autism Research Institute. This show is in memory of Jo Smith, a dancer from Indy who passed away earlier this year-- a member of her family is autistic and the ARI was an organization they supported. It's hosted by the Ancient Arts Dance Studio in conjunction with ISAMETD. In addition to performances by featured dancers doing bellydance, hip hop, and Bollywood, Il Troubadore will also be providing live music for open dancing.

It starts at 7 pm. Admission is $5, and there will also be a silent auction if you're in the mood to shop (all proceeds go to the Autism Research Insitute.) The hafla will be held at the Riley Elementary School gymnasium, located at 1901 N. Walnut St. in Muncie.

Directions to the hafla from Bloomington are available at http://tinyurl.com/5tf5yf

See http://www.synergyrad.com/bluelotus.html for more details!

Thursday, Sept. 18: Catch Dark Side adding to the creepy sideshow atmosphere of the Dark Carnival Film Festival, on a special outdoor night at the Starlight Drive-In! We're working on some new and freaky stuff for this, so don't miss it! Go to http://www.darkcarnivalfilmfest.com/index.html for more info.

SNAP - SHIMMY - POP
Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Workshops and Show with Sahire Zedaré
Saturday July 19
Bloomington, IN

Sahira Zedaré is the director of Synergy Rhythm and Dance and the Synergy Sirens in Bloomington-Normal, IL. Sahira has over twenty-five years of training and performance experience in many dance forms, beginning with jazz, tap, and modern. In recent years she has also devoted her energies to bellydance, a dance of deep beauty and boundless joy. Sahira dances to embody the music and entertain the audience, as each performance provides an opportunity to be an ambassador for this art form. Her main styles are Raqs Sharqi and Fusion, mixed with her background in jazz and modern dance, as well as new training in popping, hip hop, and West African dance.

Workshop Schedule and Fees:

Jazz Fusion Workshop:
10:30 am - noon
$25 before July 19 ($30 at the door)

Ah, jazz dance. This was Sahira's first love, and fortunately, it fuses very well with bellydance. In this workshop students learn some basic jazz technique including large isolations and torso accents, spins, and new ways to travel across the floor. Jazz is very energetic, so you'll get a great workout along with new ways to spice up your bellydance! This workshop is for students with some dance experience.

Snap, Shimmy, Pop:
1:00 - 3:00 pm
$35 before July 19 ($40 at the door)

This technique workshop focuses on small isolations, shimmy layering, and popping/locking. It's all about your muscles! We begin with a muscle-intensive warmup, where Sahira highlights which muscles should be working for which moves. Then you'll learn a variety of sharp isolations throughout the torso, culminating in a short tribal fusion choreography. This workshop is taught at the intermediate/advanced level.

Both workshops together cost $50 before July 19 ($60 at the door)

Workshop Location:
The Dance Center
223 South Pete Ellis Dr.
Bloomington, IN 47408

We are accepting registrations in advance online via PayPal and through the mail by check or money order.

- PayPal: Send payments to darksidetribaldance@gmail.com; in the comments field, please note which workshop you're registering for (or both if you're registering for both.)

- Mail: Please make checks or money orders payable to Heather Pund. In the memo line, please indicate which workshop (or both) you wish to register for. Send your payment to:

TRIBAL CLASS UPDATE

I wanted to let you all know that my Level II ATS class will have a special topic and a guest instructor this next week. Molly Mitchell will be teaching a special class on tribal fusion bellydance. Many of you may remember Molly as one of the founding members of Dark Side Tribal, and my predecessor in teaching ATS at The Dance Center. Molly moved to San Francisco almost two years ago, and has been studying ATS with Fat Chance Belly Dance and tribal fusion with Ariellah; she'll beteaching techniques and stylizations based on her studies with
Ariellah and her own solo work.

This class will run for 90 minutes, rather than the usual 60 (though if you can only stay for 60 minutes that's okay). Please bring a yoga
mat if you have one. Drop-ins are welcome! The drop-in rate for this class will be $15.

Dark Side Tribal is kicking off the summer with a short 4-week sampler set of tribal bellydance classes every Thursday in the month of June. If you've never tried American Tribal Style bellydance before, this is a great way to dip your toes in and get a taste of this interactive dance style. If you're an experienced tribalista, this session will offer opportunities to refine your technique and expand your dance language.

The class session runs Thursdays, June 5 through 26. Classes are held at The Dance Center, 223 South Pete Ellis Dr. on the east side of Bloomington, IN.

Level I (Beginner Drills & Formations): Thursdays 6:30-7:25
We'll cover fundamental posture and a selected group of basic ATS movements, then use those movements to explore the essential group formations for improvisational dancing.

Level II (Intermediate Sampler): Thursdays 7:35-8:30
This will be a sampler of broader tribal styles, formations, and techniques, focusing on a different topic or element each week. Depending on class interest, topics may include dueling duets, leading on the left, tribal fusion techniques, and blending other dance styles into tribal bellydance. This class assumes that students are proficient in the fundamentals of ATS (posture, formations, and basic moves/cues.)

As always, I encourage students to take Level I more than once, and encourage Level II students to take Level I concurrently as a warm-up and technique refresher.

Cost: $35 for full session of either level, $10/class (drop-in); $55 for full session of both classes, $15/both classes (drop-in)

If you have questions or would like to sign up in advance, please email us at darksidetribaldance@gmail.com or call (812) 339-4670.

As we've discussed a bit in class, Bridget and I enjoyed rehearsing with DST on Wednesdays and getting that extra night of dance in, so we would like to begin hosting an open tribal dance night at my house on Wednesdays from 7 pm to 9 pm. This will be a very casual time to develop as we wish; we can work on performance pieces or just jam, help each other with new moves or show what we've learned from videos, or even have an occasional crafting/ costuming night if we want to take a break from dancing. I will provide tea and the occasional snack as others have done. I have some belly dance music but not a lot, so anything that you would like to bring in (doesn't have to be traditional but please try dancing ATS to it at home first to make sure it works tempo- and time signature-wise) would be much appreciated! Bridget has also offered her house as a venue. All we really need to keep things going is DANCERS, so please feel free to pass this on to anyone whom you think might be interested.

To get to The House With the Purple Door from downtown Bloomington, take 4th Street west until you cross Rogers Street. I am 702 West 4th Street, which is on the right side if you are heading west, at the northwest corner of 4th and Fairview. Here is my place on a map:

I look forward to seeing you all there on many Wednesdays hence! Please RSVP if possible but feel free to drop in as well (I think five can comfortably do improv in my living room once I move the furniture), and call me if you have any questions!

P.S. I think you all know this, but I feel that I should say that none of us are ATS skills certified, nor do we feel confident in teaching classes. While we want to help one another out, these nights should not be considered a replacement for learning from more experienced dancers like Ann S.

Ann, if you could forward this to the full DST list, that would be nice. I will post it on Tribe.

To get to The House With the Purple Door from downtown Bloomington, take 4th Street west until you cross Rogers Street. I am 702 West 4th Street, which is on the right side if you are heading west, at the northwest corner of 4th and Fairview. Here is my place on a map:

I look forward to seeing you all there tomorrow and on many Wednesdays hence!

I hope to see you all on Thursday!

Come check out our selection of handcrafted jewelry, soaps, and dance costume pieces.

Following Luna Fest, we'll be opening our own shop on Etsy, to continue to vend our goods. There's nothing there yet, but you'll be able to find us at darksidetribal.etsy.com.

Following the Luna Fest, we'll also be dancing once again at Hatija's Hafla, a benefit for Middle Way House, featuring wonderful live music by local legends Salaam. This year's hafla will be on Sunday April 13 at Max's Place-- more info to come!

And finally, our spring hafla will be Saturday, May 10th! Stay tuned for details. :)

The classes are held at the Dance Center, at 223 S. Pete Ellis Dr. on the east side of Bloomington. Additionally, we'll be holding our spring hafla on Saturday, May 10, so please join us then for a great party and wonderful dancing.

Level I (6:30-7:25)-- we'll continue to explore the fundamentals of ATS posture, cues, and vocabulary, building on the movements covered in the last session. (You do not need to have taken the last session to take this class, however.) We'll also begin to work in duet, trio, quartet, and chorus formations.

Level II (7:35-8:30)-- we'll continue our exploration of the new additions to the FCBD vocabulary, as well as work with more advanced formations and transitions, including orbits, lateral fades, and dueling duets. This class will also work on preparing a piece for the hafla on May 10. Students must have completed at least one full session of Level I before taking Level II. Level II students are encouraged to attend Level I as a warm-up and a fundamentals drill.

The cost for either class is $65 for the full 8-week session or $10/class at the drop-in rate. If you wish to take both classes concurrently, the cost is $100 for the full session or $15/both classes at the drop-in rate.

Some of our students, the Tribalistas, will be joining us onstage during our set... so look for a tribal army to open the show! (I'm also opening the second half with the flamenco group Baila Baila... talk about switching styles. I think I might need to change brains as well as costumes.)
Can't wait for the workshops either. There are some performers with whom I will study every time I get the chance, and Carolena Nericcio is one of them. Whether we're just going over the basics of ATS, or working on new movements and refining advanced technique, it's always an eye-opening experience to work with her.

Hi everyone,

Happy New Year! We hope you all found good ways to usher out 2007 and ring in 2008. Dark Side Tribal was lucky enough to start our year with another fantastic live collaboration with The Ghosts Project (Atlanta) and Nathan Rollins (Seattle) at Axis of Evil on January 1st-- many thanks to the friends and fellow dancers who came to see us.

While our year is off to a great beginning, it will get even better next week when our next session of American Tribal Style bellydance classes begin! Here are the details:

Session: Thursdays, January 17 through March 6.
Classes held at The Dance Center-- 223 S. Pete Ellis Dr., Bloomington, IN

Level I (Beginner): 6:30-7:25 pm

This class will focus on the fundamentals of American Tribal Style bellydance, with close attention to posture and form. Students will learn basic fast and slow movements, ways to combine them, basic finger cymbal technique, and how to lead and cue movements. While the primary emphasis of this class will be drilling movements, we will also explore the ensemble formations and chorus format used for improvised group dancing. Each class will include warm up and cool down periods. Students who have taken this class before are welcome to repeat it.

Level II (Intermediate): 7:35-8:30 pm

This session we’ll work on expanding our movement vocabulary to include the new repertoire of movements and combinations from FatChanceBellyDance and Devyani Dance Company. We’ll also explore new approaches to formations, transitions, and group formations, including dueling duets and lateral fades. In addition, we will continue working with musical phrasing and learning music for improvisation. PREREQUISITE: Students must have completed at least one Level I/Mixed level session. A solid understanding and execution of the Level I fundamentals is necessary for participation in this class, as we will be moving on to intermediate movements and combinations to add into our improvisation work. Students who register for Level II are welcome to take the Level I class concurrently as a warm-up and technique refresher.

There's a copy of the pdf flyer up in our gallery-- feel free to take a look.

The cost for each class is $65 in advance for the full 8-week session or $10/class at the drop-in rate. If you wish to take both classes concurrently, the cost is $100 for the full session or $15/class for drop-ins.

If you have questions or are interested in registering for class, please email darksidetribaldance@gmail.com.

How did you design your troupe logo? Did you hire a pro graphic designer to do it? Did one of you do it, and if so, using what software?

We've been talking about a DST logo for a while, and we pretty much have the concept of what we want done figured out, we just need to find someone to do it. I'm talking something that will work well for a website, for flyers, for business cards, and for a t-shirt design if it comes to that. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Any recommendations?

This will be a long session, running 13 weeks on Thursdays from September 6th to December 6th (but no class on Thanksgiving Day, November 22.) Once again, I'll be offering two classes: Level I will focus on drilling ATS posture and basic moves, and Level II will focus on transitions, formations, and intermediate movements and combinations. As always, I encourage students to take Level I more than once to reinforce the fundamentals and clarify technique and posture. Students from both classes will have the chance to put together what they've learned at a hafla (belly dance party) at the end of the session.

Level I: Thursdays 6:30-7:25
Level II: Thursdays 7:35-8:30

All classes are held at The Dance Center, located at 223 S. Pete Ellis Dr. in Bloomington, IN. The Dance Center is tucked into the back of a courtyard in the center of the strip mall, between Learning Treasures and PC Guru, behind the clock post.

The cost for either class is $105 in advance for the full 13 weeks, or $10/class at the drop in rate; for both classes concurrently, the fee will be $160 for the full session, or $15/both classes at the drop in rate.

I posted about this in Tribal Costuming, but I thought I may as well see if any one here has any ideas - I want to wear one of the huge nose ring + chain going to ear things. I bought one last year that is a clip on model - and while appropriately huge it would slide off mid-performance because my nose doesn't seem to have enough squishy bit to grab on to. This was after making it so tight it was painful.

So my questions are these: could someone recommend a place to buy these Indian style big nose rings - or failing that - does anyone know or have experience with a fix for wearing them? I'd be ok with a post that goes through my piercing - but I'd rather not have to fiddle with it if it's all the same. Failing both of those - anyone have any ideas on how to rig a huge nose ring assembly?

So I've recently come to the realization that my posture is incorrect and it's manifesting in usage injuries - knees, feet and sometimes back. I'm taking several steps in order to correct it -one of these will be a video consultation with Carolina and Fat Chance. Anyone out there have any suggestions on what I should include in a one hour video that would be the most useful in terms of evaluating posture and technique?

I was thinking of starting in standing posture and then demonstrating taxeem, reverse taxeem, snake arms and body wave. For fast moves I was going to do Basic Egyptian, arabic, full time shimmy, arabic hip twist and double hip bump? I'm thinking that those would cover most of my angles and different body postures.

Ideas? Tips? Suggestions?

Here it is, folks-- the recipe for the baklava that I make for our haflas. Several people asked me for it, so I figured I'd post it here.

BAKLAVA

Ingredients
(Topping syrup)
- 1 1/2 c. water
- 2 c. sugar
- 1/4 c. honey
- 2 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 Tbsp rosewater or orange flower water (optional-- I used rosewater this time)

(Filling)
- 3 or more c. finely chopped nuts of your choosing (walnuts, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts all work well-- I like to mix)
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- grated zest of 1 lemon

(Packaging)
- Filo dough (usually 1 roll from a 2-roll box is enough-- you can freeze the unused portions until needed)
- 1/2 lb melted sweet cream butter
- whole cloves

Equipment needed: large rectangular baking dish, pastry brush, sharp unserrated knife

Directions:
- Make the topping syrup first. Combine the water, sugar, and honey, and bring to a boil. Boil for about 5 minutes, or until the mixture coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat, and mix in the lemon juice and the flower water (if using). Allow to cool to room temperature.

- Mix the filling ingredients together.

- Unroll your filo dough onto a flat surface. Keep the plastic wrapping underneath it, and cover it with a moist paper towel when not using it. (You do not want it to dry out-- it will become brittle and useless.) Take your baking dish; if it is smaller than the area of the filo sheets, carefully lay it on top of the dough and trace the outline of the dish with a sharp unserrated knife to trim off the excess dough.

- Have your melted butter handy. With the pastry dish, paint the bottom and sides of the baking dish with melted butter. Lay down a sheet of filo into the dish, and paint it with butter so that it melds to the bottom of the baking dish. Repeat this process with 5 more sheets of filo dough, for a layer of 6 sheets all in all.

- Add 1/2 of your filling mixture on top of the dough in the pan. Smooth it so that it's fairly level. Add 6 more sheets of filo on top of the mixture, painting each sheet with melted butter. Add the rest of your filling on top of that, and smooth to make it level. Add 6 more sheets of filo, painting each with butter. Tap down the edges of the dough with the pastry brush if they're sticking up.

- With your sharp unserrated knife, carefully score the top layer of filo dough to mark squares where the baklava pieces will be cut. You can do this in a basic grid pattern parallel to the sides of the dish, or you can get fancy and do it on the diagonal, so that you have diamonds in the middle and triangles on the edges.

- Gently poke a whole clove into the center of each square/diamond/triangle piece (even the little ones on the edges.) This will keep the top layer of dough from curling up and away while it bakes, in addition to looking pretty and adding some clove flavor to each piece. (People can either eat the cloves or discard them.)

- Bake at 350 F for 1 hour or until the top layer of dough is golden and crispy.

- With a sharp knife, cut along the scored marks while the baklava is still warm. Let cool a little, then pour the topping syrup evenly over the whole thing. Let it cool to room temperature before serving. It's yummy by itself, or with some vanilla ice cream.

Occasionally you run across those gems that seem to summarize exactly how you feel about a topic better than you could ever articulate.

Yesterday I went to see my textiles advisor perform at the CubaCaribe festival in a program called "Shaking off the Dust." It was a suite of music and dance pieces representing different folk dances from around the Caribbean and South America, all performed primarily by non-professional dancers and musicians - people from all ages, races and professions who get together to present these pieces for the soul and the love in it; who work their butts off in hours of practice not as a career, but because they just have to. It reminded me a lot of the kind of community I found in the belly dance scene - where there are few full-time professionals, but lots of amazing local soloists, troupes and communities coming together because they all have to shake it.

And then I found this in the program (also written by my advisor), which may very well be my new manifesto:

"We are committed to the principle that dance and music feed the mind and body. We believe that racial, ethnic, gendered, economic and age-based barriers are breeched through the act of dancing together. Dance should not be left solely to the young, or the fit, or the professional.

Dance, rhythm and song are acts of daily solidarity. Through dance, we draw intersecting lines in space, mapping the interplay of relationships. Dance and rhythm and song are a call out to the spirits. In participating, we are suppliants to a state of grace."

- Deborah Valoma

Where do you find the tidbits of inspiration that make your dancing sing?
Our second spring session of American Tribal Style classes begins next week and will run Thursday evenings from April 5th through May 24th. Once again, we're offering Level I from 6:30 to 7:25 pm and Level II from 7:35 to 8:30.

This session, we'll focus a bit more on preparing a performance for our hafla at the end of May-- we'll work a bit more with chorus formations in Level I, and Level II will work on preparing a slow and a fast improv piece to perform. The cost for either class will be $56 in advance for the 8-week session or $9/class at the drop-in rate; if you sign up for both classes, you'll get a deal at $85 in advance for the whole session or $15 drop-in.

So, what are your dance plans for the spring? Exciting events, big trips, general trends? Whatcha thinkin' about?

For me:

The Next Big Thing on my calendar is Bloomington Belly Dances, March 2-4th (http://www.ddbd.org/workshops). Any of you lovelies coming? Dark Side's dancing in the show on Friday, and I'm also performing in a new duet collaboration with my bud Thalia. DST will be giving a workshop on Sunday afternoon as well.

DST-- getting ready for later spring gigs, heading to Tribal Revolution (probably), and a wee bit o' troupe expansion (but that's hush hush for now.) Hopefully giving/hosting some workshops over the summer, too.

Personally-- Dancing my brains out right now, teaching bellydance, troupe rehearsals, and taking classes in flamenco, modern dance, and hip hop. It's great, if rather time-consuming. From the RB and Moria workshops that I've taken in the last 2 months, I'm realizing I have a lot of strengthening to do, as well as a lot of posture work. I'd like to do a little more solo work, because I'm rusty at that, and I have some ideas percolating for stuff I'd like to experiment with.

I'm hoping to make it to more of the fantastic workshops coming our way. I'm torn between RB in Lexington and XMED in Chicago the same weekend (3/31-4/1), though those fall at a terrible time of the semester for me, so in all honestly I probably won't make it to either. But there's Paulette Rees-Denis in Muncie in June, and I definitely want to head up there for that!

Okay, I'ma shut up now and let you guys do the typing.

I've just created a tribe for Axis of Evil, Bloomington's monthly goth/industrial/dark dance night. You may have noticed that Molly and I have plugged Axis of Evil here more than once-- it's a great night for getting dressed up and dancing, whether you think you're goth or not, and there tends to be a heavy population of bellydancers there. Dark Side Tribal's performed (officially and unofficially) at Axis, and the lovely Wyldfyre has spun fire and bellydanced there as well. Plus impromptu performances of tribal improv bellydance have been known to break out on the dance floor more than once...

Anyway, if you're in town, or even in the area, I encourage you to come to Axis! Meanwhile, come join us on tribe at http://tribes.tribe.net/axisofevil

Just got back from the workshop with BDSS tribal diva Moria, hosted by the fabulous Carenza up in Muncie. I'll have more coherent thoughts to post in a day or two, but I just wanted to say-- thanks, and hell yeah!

Moria worked us really hard-- harder, I thought, than Rachel Brice did a month ago. (All I know is that I'm feeling it today, all right?) The degree of layering she had us do (or attempt, anyway) was staggering, and really gave me some things to practice... at home... for a long, long time. Having Moria physically move me into tribal fusion posture was a total revelation for me. And the makeup workshop was a brilliant idea.

I didn't get to see as much of the show as I would have liked. My solo was in the first half, and I opted to stay backstage for that half of the show, to warm up and center and whatnot. But I really enjoyed the second half of the show; there was a great diversity of performance styles, good troupe and solo action, and plenty of inspiration to go around.

So, lots of stuff to chew on for a bit. I know a bunch of y'all were there too-- what did you think?

This session will run for 10 weeks, and I'll be doing things a little differently this time. Instead of one 90-minute mixed level class, I'm offering two separate 1-hour classes, a Level I (Beginner) course and a Level II (Intermediate) course.

You can download a pdf flyer for the classes at http://tinyurl.com/ydp6y6

Both classes will be held at The Dance Center, located at 223 S. Pete Ellis Dr. in Bloomington, IN.

The cost for either class is $70 for the full 10-week session, or $9/class at the drop-in rate. If you wish to register for both classes concurrently, the cost for both is $105 for the full 10 weeks or $15 to at the drop-in rate.

LEVEL I (Beginner): Thursdays 6:30-7:25, January 18-March 29 (no class March 15, IU's spring break)

This class will focus on the fundamentals of American Tribal Style bellydance, with close attention to posture and form. Students will learn basic fast and slow movements, ways to combine them, basic finger cymbal technique, and how to lead and cue transitions. The primary emphasis of this class will be drilling movements, though we will explore the ensemble formations and chorus format used for improvised group dancing. Each class will include warm up and cool down periods. Students who have taken this class before are welcome to repeat it.

LEVEL II (Intermediate): Thursdays 7:35-8:30, January 18-March 29 (no class March 15)

Level II will introduce intermediate ATS movements and combinations. Students will learn more advanced transitions, lead changes, variations, and finger cymbal rhythms. We will combine the basic movements covered in Level I with intermediate techniques, and focus on exploring the dynamics of tribal bellydance through improvisation in small groups and chorus. PREREQUISITE: Students must have completed at least one Level I/Mixed level session, as this class assumes proficiency in the basic ATS vocabulary. Students who register for Level II are welcome to take the Level I class concurrently as a warm-up and technique refresher.

These classes are appropriate for all ages, genders, and body types.

Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move freely: yoga pants/leggings, pantaloons, or a long skirt that can be tucked up are appropriate for the lower body. Please wear a form-fitting top such as a choli, tank top, or fitted t-shirt. A scarf or hip wrap is recommended to help you see hip movements better, but not required. You may wish to bring a yoga mat or beach towel for the warm up and
cool down components of the class.

About the instructor: Ann Shaffer has studied various forms of belly dance for five years, including private lessons and seminars with Carolena Nericcio, the creator of American Tribal Style and founder/director of FatChanceBellyDance. Ann has performed with several belly dance troupes in the Bloomington area, and currently dances with Dark Side Tribal, Bloomington's only ATS and tribal fusion group.

We're holding a hafla on Saturday, December 2nd. It's primarily a chance for my ATS students to dress up and do some free-form tribal jamming outside of the structure of class, without being a formal recital. But we're also inviting our other friends and fellow dancers (tribal or otherwise) in the area to come party with us-- and that means you!

The hafla starts at 7 pm. There's no cover, but we ask that everyone bring some food or a non-alchoholic beverage to share.

If you're interested in coming, send an email to darksidetribaldance @ gmail . com to RSVP and get directions.
Hope to see some of you there!

I just had the pleasure of seeing the BDSS last night in New Albany. It was a fairly small theater, and an even smaller crowd-- and we ended up smack in the front row, just an arm's length or two away from all of those fabulous dancers! I'd seen the Raqs Carnivale show last March in Chicago, but it was really different being so close and seeing so many details, and being able to make eye contact with the dancers and everything. (Particularly as Sharon K. was performing, and she's my favorite dancer EVAR.)

This was a much-needed shot of inspiration for me. Though it's true that teaching is an education unto itself, I'm not studying dance (bellydance or other) with anyone else right now, which means I'm not getting either as much practice or as much stimulus as I'm used to. As such, I've been sort of stagnating. (Also, I'm totally swamped with school this semester, so there's that whole lack-of-time thing.) But seeing the lovely Superstars last night reminded me of what I can/could do, what I'd like to be able to do someday, and other avenues that I'd not thought of. It's also reminded me that I'm at a point now with dance where I need to go seeking inspiration a little more proactively than I've done in the past. To that end, I've decided that I'm going to go to as many workshops as I can this next year (Rachel in January and Paulette in June, wheeee!), and invest in a few more dvds that I will attempt to make myself use, as well as try to carve out time to try some new dance classes (hip hop, anyone?)

And because I'm interested (and nosy!), I want to know-- what's your current inspiration? Where are you finding it, and what are you doing with it? How do you keep your creativity revved, your motivation in action, and your mind working?

Me: school started and I am swamped swamped swamped! I'm back in doctoral classes full time, and I'm teaching (music history) for the first time, which is kind of overwhelming, though I'm starting to get the hang of it (I hope!) I'm also teaching tribal bellydance classes on my own this year, but I had great training as Molly M's assistant last year, so that's not quite so scary. ;) Haven't had as much time for dancing or reading tribe as I would like, and I'm not sure that'll change as much as I would like it to-- but I'll try to poke my head in more often.
