I didn't see them this year, but in past years there was a band who played late at night at several of the parties we went to.
I remember it featured 2 ladies - one of them was "older" (probably my age, haha) and played a keyboard. I remember she had always had a battery-powered keyboard light, so you couldn't miss her. I think an accordian was a big part of the band also. The keyboardist sang gypsy songs, although that's a broad term and my details are obviously vague.

Mon, August 17, 2009 - 8:14 PMNope.. it's not Wine and Alchemy. I think I know who Madog is referring to. I think played with them 2 years ago at the O'Choda Hafla. They played a lot of Balkan music. Since I didn't make it to many gigs this year, I don't know what happened to them, but asking O'Choda about them, could lead you in the proper direction. -

Tue, August 18, 2009 - 4:00 PMYes, I think they were at the Ochoda Hafla then. Now that you mention it, I remember our first Pennsic we camped across from them, near Chalkman's Pub/Lusty Wench.
Melissa was there so much I think she camped there that year. I bet she knows who I'm talking about.

W&A has a female harmonium player, but the keyboard I'm referring to is much larger.
For anyone who was at the bacon party this year, there was a fellow on an accordian who sang some songs that reminded me of them. His vocal style was interesting - sort of a folk music meets death metal. -

I checked Youtube but couldn't find anything right away, but at least I know it's Romany music I was curious about.
It just bugs me that I don't know all the other musicians I guess, LOL.

Mon, September 7, 2009 - 7:28 AMThat's it. I recognize Mahakaruna from the Khafif site. She plays a hammered dulcimer, not exactly a keyboard, but close. I know Jaz and Denys at least casually, I didn't realized Mahakaruna was part of their group.
Ravenspittle is not exactly near Chalkman's pub, so I'm not sure why so many keep suggesting it. Perhaps this year it was a hotbed of Romany music, but AFAIK the period I'm thinking of was before Melissa camped at Orluk (it's a long trek from Orluk to Chalkman's!) - maybe 2002 or so.

Fri, August 28, 2009 - 8:42 PMYes, I believe the Romany musicians are a collection of musicians who camp with Ravenspittle.August (Mezmer Society from Asheville)sings and plays the accordian, Darbuka Dave drums and also plays the squeeze box, Majida on the violin, and Blake was the trumpet player. Joined by other friends too (I think i remember Mab at Midnight Madness)....I'm sorry if I'm forgetting someone... 2 other wonderful musicians Joachim and Scarhart were there just for first week this year. It was a truely wonderful year.... Sigh...
