Thank Yous from House Three Skulls

I want to sincerely thank everyone who helped to make this year's party a success.

To the drummers and dancers, thank you again for joining us for the evening. Your contributions are always well appreciated.

To the fire performers, thank you for adding a change of pace during the night. We love the flame...

To my own Household, for contributing all around - as guards, bartenders, dancers, drummers, fire-spinners, etc. And for putting up with me in the 48 hours leading up to the party. ;)

Thank you again to Derek of the Bella Morte for volunteering his services for the evening.

Many, many thanks to House Hedgehog for the loan of the furniture.

Thank you to all who tipped/donated at the bar - you made what could have been a rough night financially for a couple of us a lot more bearable.

And last but not least, thank you to all who came and drank, chatted, and enjoyed our company. You're why we do this every year. Keep showing up, and we'll keep doing it as long as we can get away with it.

See you again next year, folks.

Geeeze, on a reliability scale of 1 - 10, Tribe gets a minus 20. Did everybody bail? Or just give up?

Maybe they have it fixed. Anything to say, say it fast, say it now, post like the wind while you still can.

Tipping the Bar - X-post

Hey guys,

Money is always a tender subject (forgive the pun), but it's something that needs to be addressed from time to time.

Houses throw big parties at War, and hope to recoup SOME of what they put into them through the house Tip Jar. So, I have some questions for the hosts and the patrons of the Pennsic Parties....

How do you decide how much to tip when you head to a party? Do you think to stash some cash in your pouch when you plan to head out for the night's wanderings?

For those that threw parties this past Pennsic... how much did you spend? And how much did you get back?

Are finances really considered when planning parties? Or do you just throw the party you can afford and hope for the best from the tip jar?

If your house throws a Party, how do you "advertise" where the Tip jar is or how do you make is visible?

I would hope that everyone chips in something when they attend a party... but having some idea of what is expected (or hoped for), is good, too. Knowing some guidelines is helpful for the new folks at War.

This year the parties were a bit slow. My Girl friend had an injuerred foot and as such we could not get around to the parties that I have come to enjoy at Pennsic. She has an added issue of large crowds, I discovered this fact at DragonCon last year, I thrive on large crowds. Next year, things will be different.

Early Saturday morning, someone destroyed the door of our camp, The Sisterhood on E23, by ripping our mirrored trucker-girl symbol from it.

If anyone happens to see that Whores of Babylon Guild symbol, could you please let me know? I suspect our dear, shiny Sesame (as in "Open Sesame") is now bolted to a fraternity wall. Well, at least she's getting out more than 2 weeks a year.

Also stolen was a purple/blue/silver hand-painted sign that says “Horse of Babylon (with horse picture)/Currently Quwhorantined” sign.

This was not a prank as no note was left, and our door was savaged so nastily that we had to throw it away.

I’m losing faith in human nature one person at a time. Sigh.

I know this is a long shot but never know.. There was a lord at the Mardi Gras party wearing a kilt but had glow sticks dangling down from underneath. Pretty sure there he was the only glow-stick-wearing man in a kilt there. Anyone know who this could be? He was a fantastic kisser :-D Am sorry I left the party before running into him again.

On behalf of the Chalkman Pub, I'd like to thank our friends and patrons for another great Pennsic. Come back next year, we'll be doing the same thing. Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Music competition first Friday.

And remember, that ice cold PBR you have in your hand is really a blonde from the Alsace-Loraine. It's all about suspension of disbelief. Or at least it's nice and cold, and we aren't going to run out of booze an hour into the party. :-)

See you next year!

The Rescue Rangers would like to thank everyone at Pennsic that made it great.

Wulf's Den and 3 Skulls for allowing us into their lands to unload the Rescue Ranger punch on unsuspecting(or very willing) guests.
Rogue for Friday nights fun and for Fizzball. I see that the Rangers have to bring more punch next year as Wolf polished off over a gallon himself.
And for all the people who stopped to try the glowing liquid(just glow sticks placed in the container not some disgusting foreign substance) on the liter being carried by slaves. The tasks weren't too hard and we all had fun.

Thanks again to all.

See ya next year!

Yep. Thought I was a diehard, crawling into camp at times when the sun was coming up. This year I learned otherwise.

There I was, dropping in at my favorite friendly coffee camp late one morning, after sleeping in because of a long night out. One of their campmates came in for the night, after 11 in the morning. Still quite happy. Casually attired. Barely but managing to regurgitate evidence of the night before in the nearby portacastle.

I have a new hero. And I am a party wuss.

What is the latest you've come in?

Finally got to see the Raquy and the Caveman concert this year. Also took the Raquy drum classes. WOW!

Free concert. Free classes from a great teacher, effortless machine gun drummer with an enchantingly sheepish smile and engaging delivery. She took a beginner class from dum, tek, ka to all playing a 13/8 together while she played melody, in one hour. Amazing.

Where else but Pennsic?

It seemed to me there were a lot less cars in the bog at night this Pennsic. Maybe it was because the busses ran later. Maybe people just walked more. Whatever the reason, it made walking around the lake sooo much better, not being blinded so often. Thanks.

while 2 of our members have attended in the past (one of them for years) this will be the first pennsic for "wine and alchemy": celtic - greek - "gypsy" - mediterranean band.

so, we thought we'd give a shout out and let it be known we are available to play for weddings/circumcisions/birthdays and generally any other kind of shindig.

we'll be a 4 piece group at pennsic this year with our vocalist/dancer, our greek bouzouki/accordion/mandolin/lead guitar player, and our 2 guitarist/drummers.

you can check us out, listen to music clips, read bios, and all that happy stuff at:
www.wineandalchemy.com
and/or

last minute opening for 1 passenger or gear to pennsic

I have room for 1 passenger and/or lots of gear, to Pennsic. I will be driving a cargo van. I have room for one passenger and big stuff like period tents 'n' such. If you want me to transport your stuff only, and can contribute gas money, that works too.

I plan to leave wed eve 7/30 or thurs 7/31 AM and stay til the end.
Leaving from just north of New York City and travelling via Route I-80
I don't know if that timetable works for anyone else, so I will leave room for flexibility.

Chalkman Pub at Pennsic

The Chalkman Pub will be back this year again. We will be open our usual nights Monday Wednesday and Friday, both weeks. The first Friday is our Music Competition, which is a popular event. (If you'd like to compete in the competition, you have to sign up Friday afternoon at such and such a time and give out this and that piece of information about your performance. Instructions will be on the flyer - it's a little complex for vacation. Sorry about that, but it's just one of those things)

I'd like to extend a special invitation to folks who have not came by the Pub yet. Come see us Monday, Wednesday and Friday O'dark-Thirty. You don't have to wear a costume, you don't have to not be wearing pants, you don't need an invitation, you don't need to "know" someone, you don't need to do something stupid to impress the gate guard. Just bring your interesting cool self on in and come up to the bar and we'll give you a free drink or 10 (bring your ID), and enjoy a particularly special form of musical entertainment: "Guys playing for free beer!"

If you aren't interesting and cool, come anyway. Because in truth, you likely *are* interesting and cool, but you are suffering from low self-esteem. And you know what's good for that? A party, that's what !

What we don't have is a drum circle, and the obligatory 500 people crowding around it. It's not that we have anything against percussionists or dancers, many of us drum or dance at war ourselves. But, it just doesn't fit our format for many different reasons. Trust us, we know what we are doing on this ;-)

Oh, we are on Old Tuchux Hill at the crossroads on E17,corner of Good Intentions and Low Rd.

See you soon!

Pentwyvern will once again hold its Bacchanalia on the second Monday, August 4th at dark thirty.
To get in the door you need an invite and a costume. To get an invite, you either have to be either invited by having one handed to you, or you can drop by with a bottle of wine before the party to receive and invite.
Costumes should be a reasonable attempt at something Pre-600 A.D.
Last year's Bacchanalia was a great success and we hope to make it even better this year!!

House Three Skulls presents... a party!

I'm happy to announce that House Three Skulls will be holding its 6th annual Pennsic Party. As with any party, logistics may force changes or an outright cancellation, but I wanted to get the tentative plans up and out there. More details will be announced soon, but here's what we can reveal thusfar:

- Our party will once again be held on Tuesday night, 2nd week, at O'Dark-thirty . Yes, we know other camps hold parties on Tuesday - we don't do it to compete, but to help spread the load - many camps (including ours) can only safely support so many people at one time. We encourage people to come and go. The point is to have a good time, not to concentrate all of Pennsic onto a single camping block.
- Location (subject to change if we get pushed off our block): W07, along the Great Middle Highway (check http://land.pennsicwar.org/maps/ if you're not sure where I'm talking about). No, this is technically not the Swamp, or the Bog. We're actually in an outcast block that doesn't get a descriptive name, but we're right by Rune Stone Hill.
- We are in the process of working out entertainment provided by our drummers, dancers, and fire-spinners. Of course, other drummers and dancers are welcome (and, depending on time, space, etc., more fire may be as well). As long as I remember, sand will be on-hand to keep the ground around the firepit safe in the event of rain.
- Our 'mixologist' and I are working out the details for our infamous three-drink salvo. For those that don't know, our bar serves 3 mixed drinks of various potencies - in our Household colors of Red, Black, and Green. Different flavors each year, to keep you all on your toes. We also have at least one keg-served drink on tap (we're talking about how much we can afford to do this year), and a few other 'extras' depending on our whim.*
- In-camp decor will likely be set up, and as always we will be encouraging theme-appropriate dress. (I know - you guys want the theme... as soon as we can announce it, I will)
- Our party is STRICTLY 21+, ID required. The only people under 21 that will be there LIVE there, and they're not there to do what you all are, I assure you. ;)

*Last year, we made more than ever. And despite the torrential rains and the fact that we seemed to have both summoned and dismissed a thundercloud above our camp, we ran out. Of everything. And people still wouldn't leave. That's OK, though - we still love you guys.

As always, I'm open to feedback regarding our last party - what you liked or didn't like - as well as suggestions for this year.

Also, if you like our parties, and happen to bump into one of us, feel free to let us know. We like that kinda stuff. Actually, we're mercenaries - we like ALL kinds of stuff.

A New Plague for Pennsic

Hello,

Once again, the Circus of the Damned will be unleashing a Plague upon Pennsic. Hopefully, the brave children of the Realm will follow in their predecesor's footprints, step up, and save Pennsic from this year's disaster. Our seers tell us that the omens point to Tuesday of War week (8/5/08) as being the day that this year's Horror will descend upon the Marketplace and Food Court. Any child helping to capture one of the troublesome beasties and turn it in at the Children's fete will receive a Royal Proclaimation and a prize. Keep a look out in the Pennsic Independant for more information!

Sincerely,
Rania Iskramor
Circus of the Damned

P.S. A little history for those parents new to Pennsic : The Circus of the Damned has run a large scale "scavenger hunt" for the children of Pennsic for the past two years. It has been so well received by the children and the visiting Monarchs, that we have embraced it as one of our House traditions.

In the wee hours of the moring on Tuesday, Gypsies sneak though the Market place and Food Court and strew little toy critters around on the paths. We try and continue to sneak around several times during the day on Tueday and early Wednesday, as well, to make sure there are plenty of critters to be found (last year, we made and "hid" over 500 viscious Vorpal Bunnies). Children are asked to find ONE beastie and bring it to the Children's fete to claim their due honors. If your child does not find a beastie on Tuesday, please come to the Fete on Wednesday... Gypsies are notoriusly bad zoo-keepers and we have MANY critters escape inside the fete itself.

We look forward to seeing all of you at the Children's Fete!

-Rania

Ishtar and Melissa the Clarinetchick looking for parties!

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for parties that are cool with my band and our available friends showing up and playing tunes. Just a warning, we travel around with a guy who plays amplified bass. :-o

I have a habit of encouraging all musicians and percussionists (pick your identifying term) to play with me, so the band can get pretty large.

If your camp/party would like some fun Middle Eastern tunes and don't mind a bit of SCA rule breaking, please EMAIL me!! Tribe is not working 75% of the time.

Email:

melissa@clarinetchick.com

Yours in D Hijaz,

Information on MWOP party.

On behalf and request of Beast, I am the bearer of some sad news. House Dunn Phalin and Clan Shadowfire have decided that there will not be a Men Without Pants Party this year. Here are Beast's words from his webpage, so you all may better understand the reasoning.

"By the good graces of the Pennsic gods there was enough room, and that year, Pennsic 27, E31 came to be. House Dunn Phalin set up camp right next door to Shadowfire, allowing for a truly massive common area shared between the two camp. That location, coupled with the friendship between those two camps, was integral in morphing the Men Without Pants Party into the phenomenon it has been for the last 10 years.

As much as I didn’t want to admit it, I knew then that we would, as Pentwyvern had, grow older and probably tire of throwing the party, and perhaps begin to throw others as well. Those things have indeed come to pass, and now, this year, Pennsic 37 will no longer be hosted by House Dunn Phalin and Clan Shadowfire. As happened before, those many years ago, that’s not to say that there IS no more Men Without Pants Party. Perhaps another, younger household will have the torch passed to them, if they so wish. I just know that, as before I came, the Men Without Pants Party is something that is almost synonymous with Pennsic, and will continue to endure, even if not within the walls of Shadowfire and House Dunn Phalin.

The Men Without Pants Party has meant almost as much to me – as I am sure it has for many in both Clan Shadowfire and House Dunn Phalin – as Pennsic itself. By preparing for, hosting and cleaning up after that party with the members of the two camps acting as one, for over a decade, I have formed friendships – nay, a family – that will remain a part of my heart until my dying day. I can only thank my first Pennsic home, House Dunn Phalin, and our friends and neighbors, Clan Shadowfire, for the gift they have given me, and all of Pennsic, in the Men Without Pants Party. To them I offer this wish: May your mugs and your purses always be filled, may your hearts and your souls never be empty, may you always be lucky enough to have friends, family and good health aplenty, and may all roads eventually lead you back to The Pennsic War."

Make a permanent mark on Pennsic (time sensitive)

Hey Folks,

Just informing y’all that the window is closing on a unique opportunity to make your mark on Pennsic and improve the experience for everyone else to boot.

We’re all excited to get to Pennsic for the first time; driving past the school busses, over the one lane bridge, up the hill and to the right…as we drive in we see all the camps getting set up on the right, and to the left we see…the snow fence.

This years autocrat, Isabella, has embarked on an ambitious project to deal with that one abrasive view on Pennsic’s front lawn. For a small donation of $5 your coat of arms, the arms of your camp or household, etc. will be hand painted on a pennant to be displayed in perpetuum on your drive into Pennsic.

They will make only one pennant for each Coat of Arms, so as to allow variation. Arms do not have to have been approved by the College of Heralds. However, if they have not been approved, they reserve the right to deny a request if the Arms are deemed offensive or inappropriate for the SCA.

“We are only producing a limited number of pennants, so it is first-come, first-served. The pennants will be triangle-shaped flags made from trigger cloth, measuring about 18 inches by 10 inches. The device will be roughly 8 inches square and painted on with acrylic paints. Pennants will be property of Pennsic, just like the shields on the fort.

To have your arms painted on a pennant, please email Isabella (mayor37@pennsicwar.org) with a jpg or drawing of your arms. The address to mail the $5 checks (made out to "SCA Inc., Pennsic") will be provided in an email response.”

The official deadline is this Sunday the 15th, but Isabella told me she could fudge the deadline by a little bit. If you’d like to become a permanent part of Pennsic here’s your chance … but you’d better hurry

Soul Kiss is blend of goods all finely chosen or made by my own design in various places around the world. If you find me at a Festival, this is what you will see:

Soul Kiss Silver - Many of my peices are antique. Much of the very rare and authentically old peices of silver from India are gone, However I am still able to bring incredably rare and old peices to my customers. Many of the peices i get are old sterling silver wedding peices from women in Rhajastan which i find and re-string them into a clevor design of necklaces which are adjustable. Becuase they are adjustable they are like three neck's in one becuase they can be worn as a high choker or many different lengths. When worn as a choker the strands hang down the back. Soul Kiss also carries very unique stones, an awesome eclectic array of earings and rings.
Mid priced jewerly - Also very unique designs. Much of of it is made of natural elements such as wood, bamboo and stones. All with a very exotic feel.

Clothing - All my own designs. Mostly street wear with a tribal edge. Great all natural japenese style shirts for women, with hand painted wood beaded tyes. Beautiful skirts with panels of very old hand embroidered fabrics the northern Indian gypsy tribes. Lots of Men's too which is rare at Fest's because there are never any great choices for guys!! All made with beautiful natural fabrics. sexy.

Beautiful Statues and hand carved masks - All carved out of exotic woods such as mango wood and jackfruit wood etc. All of my carvings i have made in very small villages in the high mountains of Bali. I support many many families and artisans in those villages.

Accesories - I carry many various Sacred art scarves from India, I have yummy pashimina's that make great elegant shawls for a light weight but warm cover up for the summer. And great prices too !! Soul Kiss carries alot of antique wedding sari's that are gorgous.
For the Bellydancers - Depending on the Festival, you will always find great stuf for the Bellydancers. Some of the Fest's more so, depending on which one, but e-mail me and i will let you know which ones. I will always carry exotic adormnents tho that are not readily seen at most or all fest's !! So please visit me soon

Thanx Sheri Poole

Buyer Beware

vintage_silk_wraps on Ebay

This is a store on ebay for Buyer Beware
I was bidding on a lot of 6 skirts in which I was winning with a wonderful price so I thought. After the bidding got to $100, the seller put a BUY NOW price in the site so anyone that was bidding and wanted the lot of 6 for $89.00 could purchase it cheaper but the highest bidder was locked into paying the higher price. I paid ASAP and contacted the seller - ask if he would not make up the difference with sending extra wraps - just told me "TO BAD not he fault the bidding got so high"
So I left them a natural comment - and explain the change in auction after price was over $100. In return they give me a negative comment and misleading information my comments. I contacting him asking why the negative when all I did was be a great buyer by over paying within 10 min of the auction ending and only asking for him to balance the wrong doing on his part. Again "TOO BAD" "YOUR FAULT"
My reply...I will take my business and many other with me. HAVE A NICE DAY!

So with all that said - BUYERS BEWEAR....please please please....from one Tribal Goddess to another..PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SALER. There are many other seller on ebay - this guy does not deserve the belly dancer dollars!

Any questions......just me~~~~

Not having him would be quite horrible as he is like the party director for the privateers of his ship. Any body have any good ideas? I already told him I would pay sight fees and all

new party themes

So the need for more parties at Pennsic is apperant. so ideas for them need to be brainstormed.
I got a couple ideas:

1. Tablaro tournament night. --- have like 10 to 20 gamebords set up and have winners play winners untill a grand Tablaro player emerges, who by this time is to drunk to notice the great prize they have won with the others getting a consolation token, or something.

2. Redneck Viking --- I am not patening this party but request to be a judge to whom ever takes up this hi-lar-ious party theme idea. This could be done with hardly any pre planning, most every one will be able to participate in the contests: best garb, biggest horn helmet, harriest back, lustiest wench, creative redneck sca invention, best belch, ect.... any more redneck viking themed party games?????

these ideas can be used by any interested hosting camp, any more ideas????

Greetings and Salutations!

It's been a couple months since we all left home for what my camp calls 'the great big beer run' . And it can't be over soon enough!

Anyhow, I've been pseudo searching for pictures from this years Lesbian and Bisexual Ladies' Tea party. My lady campmates and I came up from the swamp to celebrate Lady Lusty's last night as a bachlorette. Both she and I performed (her singing happy birthday in a very special manner, and I with some firehooping) I was wondering if anyone in this group happened to catch the action on film. I would *LOVE* to see pictures and/or video.
please let me know either here or through a private message.
Thank you!!

Google just added Pittsburgh to its Maps Streets Viewer - photos taken along the road. They went out as far as New Castle and passed by Cooper's during Pennsic. You can see the tents from I-79. I think I even found the Chalk Man pub (see the link below). I thought it was pretty cool. Might there be SCAdians among the Google mappers?

Define the perfect Pennsic Party

So, I was wondering. What is it that makes a party at Pennsic special for you? Is it the decor? The music? Dancing? Drink? Performances? Theme? Company?.... OK, you get the idea.

I've been to 5 Pennsics, and MANY parties over the course of those years (I typically hit several a night, and I go out just about every night - rain or not). I also, as you may have guessed, am heavily involved in the planning of the Three Skulls' party. Inquiring minds want to know what you like seeing when you go out (not at any one party - in general).

Also, anything that just really bothers you about parties in general would be nice to get out in the open. I think this can prove a good way to improve the nightlife at Pennsic in years to come (not that it's bad, but improvement is, by its nature, a good thing). Any thoughts are welcome and sought after. Thanks in advance for your input.

... help my family help a lot of people. Joyce (my adopted sister) runs the Southern Virginia Child Advocacy chapter, it is located in Rocky Mount/Roanoke Virginia area and if you have every lived or traveled there you know that resources are very limited. Joyce stands up in court representing children who have been verbally/mentally abused, prostituted at a young age, seen/been part of violent crimes, raped, abandoned, and a countless number of unthinkable things so they have a voice and a hand to hold that won't hurt them. If you can please follow the instructions below and vote for their organization to win the funding.

Some of you met me through this Tribe and some of you were set to meet me at this past Pennsic but due to circumstances I was unable to catch up with you. At any rate I finally have my group's Tribe up and running.......sort of :) All are welcome to jump over to the Tortuga Tribe and join me in all kinds of piratey goodness. Of course I will continue to frequent here, but a good way to keep up with my goings on is to make your way over to Tortuga. Hope to see some of you there.
Cheers,

I'd like to thank our patrons and musicians, our ever-tolerant neighbors and anyone who was walking by and thought about coming in to start fight but didn't, this year at War.

Without you, none of this would be possible. Or necessary.

If you had a good at the Pub this year, it was probably due to me, and you should buy me a present. If you had a poor time, it was probably due to some guy who really isn't even a household member.

Come on back next year, when hopefully we will have finally done something about the traffic jam to get up to the bar.

To all who attended our party on Tuesday, I would like to extend a hearty thanks from all of House Three Skulls.

Despite the rain, we were able to continue our celebrations well into the evening, and drumming and dancing continued well past when we could have expected people to remain in the encampment.

As one of the party organizers, I would like to personally thank all of the drummers and dancers who stuck it out, as well as the fire performers who - despite calling down the rain - made the evening one to remember.

We'll be back next year, hopefully bigger and better and ready to entertain. Again, my thanks to all who were able to make it out despite the storm.

- David of House Three Skulls

Special Thanks x post

Special Thanks

Financially speaking, I had no business going to this last Pennsic. However, I missed the two prior wars and I’d be damned if I missed another one.

So, I worked my ass off making armour and made some pretty major sacrifices just to get enough gas money to make the trip and pay the sight fee once I arrived home.

Once on sight, I slept in my truck and worked for meals.

“That sucks,” you say?

I say differently.

Because of the sacrifices I made, it was incredibly important that this Pennsic didn’t suck. Thanks to some incredible people, not only did this Pennsic NOT suck, it was one of the greatest events I have experienced to date…and I’ve been around…so that’s saying something.

So, now I want to use this public forum to give thanks to some incredible people who made my two weeks of fantasy that much more special.

Thanks to:

The entire crew from camp Circus of the Damned:

Steven,
you proclaimed yourself to be an asshole but frankly, you failed to live up to this reputation. I’m afraid you treated me with respect and kindness the entire time I was there.

Robin,
Your skills as a caretaker are only surpassed by your abilities to cook incredible food over a camp fire…and that was some INCREDIBLE food. I could not have survived without your kindness.

Hope,
You are aptly named. Your mere presence is simply a delight.

Karyn,
I would be a foolish man if I dared to go shopping without you. I also had the urge to have a tea party with you…I don’t quite know what that’s about. Oh, and I have already spent hours working on my refrigerator magnet poetry.

Dan,
You are one of the most diligent of soldiers I have ever seen. You not only have my thanks, but my respect as well.

John and Olivia,
My two fellow observers of the human condition. When I saw you around each corner, I felt like I had found my tribe. I hope you make it back next year.

Nicole,
You are more fun than any of Santa’s helpers…and you gotta nice butt.

Amy,
Even though you pulled a drive by ninja on me, I still have to respect your powerful ninja skills.

My girls from Setmore Swamp

Ruby,
You spoke a different language, but you were cute when you did.

Drea,
You seek knowledge and experience. That alone has earned my respect. You actively sought out fun and you gave me your trust, a gift I will always treasure

Three Skulls rocks,

Gypsy,
You found me when I got lost…I know I should thank you for that, but I kinda liked being lost…so I’ll thank you for letting me get lost instead

Red (even though…),
You listened, you contributed, you played. Yay.

Nevik,
As usual, you energy, your attitude, and your drums were a driving force in making this Pennsic a positive one. However, your split finger techniques are hell for a beginning drummer like me, but I do love the pain.

Kazuki,
You are the best stalker I ever had. I also wanted to thank you for teaching me that I have to relearn everything that Nevik has taught me about the duembek.

Orluk Oasis,
Lula, Kaheena, my morning ritual of regretting my lack of sleep was pleasantly interrupted by your welcoming eyes, smiling faces and good conversation. There is no better way to start the day. I hope that tradition continues for a long time.

Raven Spittle,
You gave me boots for my messed up feet. You gave me CheesyWurst at the most appropriate time of the morning/night. One of you made out with me in a place of worship. You gave me companionship. You gave me laughter. You welcomed me and gave me love and understanding.

Lost Boys,
I never knew that getting “Tea Bagged” could be so much fun.

McGroyne,
You touched me in places I never knew I could be touched. I even have the sticker to prove it.

Vlad's,
Like Denny's, always open.

Wow…

I just realized how long this list will be if I continue.

Bottom line, Pennsic is full of incredible people and incredible moments.

Thank you all.

Lost item at Pennsic (x-post)

Milady lost some items at Pennsic that, remarkably, never made it up to lost and found. She list her collection of Pennsic Medallions from all the Pennsics (and several other events) she's been to, but the most upsetting thing for her that she lost was a set of Horde Cords givent to her by a dear friend, and made my that friend's father before he passed. It is a black and red macrame cord with some sort of animal spine woven into the cord. She thinks she lost them somewhere in the swamp, possibly in or around Kindred, but cannot be sure. If anyone knows if these turn up somewhere, I would appreciate it if I could be contacted here, no questions asked.

I am a drummer and I love it. I ahve often wondered with a smile....why don't other instruments have the popularity of a doumbec? Sure, there is the belly dancing and the erotic joys it brings, but surely other instruments can command the attention of the old Doumbec. Any ideas?

Una and Mischief

So this year I will have my son at Pennsic and have modified a wagon thus turning it into a pirate ship name Mischief. Now I know you must be thinking what does your son's wagon have to do with Pennsic Dar Thirty. And I am going to leave you hanging on that as I tell you the next part of the story.

While IMing my friend Von Beck I had a slip in typing....happens often and always with fun results. Here is more or less how the conversation went:

Captain Una: I just got some Pennsic practice. I took Morgan for a walk and all the while he was stumbling and staggering, cutting me off abruptly and walking oo near moving cars and all the while drinking Drunken Sailor.

Captain Una: That should have said SINGING Drunken Sailor, he's too young to drink them.

Von Beck: What exactlly goes into a drunken sailor?

Captain Una: Well............

Captain Una: This is seriously going to have to be a drink now

And the rest may not be appropriate for a public forum ;)

THUS THE DRUNKEN SAILOR WAS BORN!!!!!!!!

By day the pirate vessel Mischief is captained by son, but by night she is mine and I will be hauling not only Drunken Sailor but many other wonderful drinks that I would LOVE to share. The full list is:
Drunken Sailor
Roman Snowball
Weasel's Tit
Wench's Bossom
Mischief
Threesome
and
Captain Una's Bane
Each drink is unique. Though I may not give exact recipes on them I will tell you this:
None are made with anything over 90 proof
None have kool-aid nor grain
None can remove paint from your car
All taste good and not like lighter fluid
If you have allergies I will be sure to tell you if the drink is safe
And I will share the base for the drink.....ie. Vodka, Rum, Gin, etc.

I don't know about you but I think we deserve better than kool-aid drinks and despite my feedback people still think that just because you can TASTE the 151 they used that it is better. I am of the mind that if it gets you a little buzzed and tastes awesome you are more inclined to come back for more. Why do we really need to be knocked on our asses with one drink. That is just silly.

So if you see the mischief PLEASE come over to me and say hey and partake of my hospitality. And shhhhhhh......don't spread the word through the known world but I'll probably have baked goods to share too :)

And you can all start adoring me..........now :) Just kidding. I'd really just love to make new friends and I love playing bar tender.

I think this topic has been brought up before, but I am too lazy to look.

With a 6 hour drive myself, and with others with considerably longer drives, we are going to need tunes to entertain us in our travels.

What recommendations do people have for songs for the ultimate Pennsic road trip mix?

1st Monday Party @ WulfDen!

Greetings and Salutations y'all!

I just thought I'd drop a mention/reminder on here as it seems to be a "proper" place for such...

The traditional, time-honoured, and, (at times) truly terrifying: 1st Monday Cauldron O' Doom Party - SHALL be happening @ WulfDen again - as usual per the past 9 or so years, - right around the "Full-Dark" hour.
Drummers, - bring thy drums! Dancers, bring thy Drummers. Drum (well) and they will come! Plenty of room for dancers on level, raked ground around the firepit, - sectioned off Drummers' area over to one side. Water will be made available for those who do not imbibe the evil fruit o' the grape. (or hops or grain or... - well...)
This is the 'Freshman Mixer of Pennsic', - many new relationships have been kindled around our huge-a**ed firepit on that 1st week, - who knows WHAT sort of trouble you might get yourself into while the War is yet young!? - best just to show up and find out! ;-)

Speaking of imbibing.... - remember peeps, - this is a "You Make the Party" sort of gathering. We provide the place, some atmosphere, a bonfire, and may or may not have beer available. - but the Cauldron, (a 42-gallon, Rubbermaid Cauldron with two handles and a snap-on lid...) will be filled with mixers, chopped fruit, and a few handles of really cheap full-proof booze. (meaning: weak) From that point the rest of it is up to YOU! This is YOUR party peeps!
So add to the cauldron that bottle of nasssty liquor you simply won't serve to your "good" friends, or pick up something along the 80-proof-rotgut-that-I-don't-want-anyone-to-see-in-my-tent variety on the way to War and help make this party flow! Booze, wine, mead, - it all goes in!
(and usually comes out as served by some of Pennsic's finest, most beautitious ladies with twinkling eyes and wicked smiles...)

We do this one for you hard-core Pennsic-goers who arrive that 1st weekend and just can't bring yourselves to drive home for the week. Work? - Bah! So for you 2-week hard-core peeps, - Huzzah!

Disclaimer:
Please: - Drink Responsibly - as WE cannot be held to account for those who find their inhibitions lowered for the evening other than we'll roll you to the side so's no one else trips and perhaps cover you with a blanket. Perhaps. Pregnancy and/or the dreaded "OH-MY-GAWD, what DID I do last night?" morning statement can be an unhappy side-effect of too much cauldron-juice. Take appropriate personal measures. ;-D

RULES: (yes, - we have a few, - but they're pretty good ones...)

- No fightin'. (duh)
- No Glowsticks. (DUH-UH!)
- No blinky-magical-glowing-walkingsticks. Please.
- No wrasslin' unless it's nekkid and at least one of you is female.
- Nudity is permitted. Encouraged, actually. Well... - for some. Have you seen my pavilion, m'lady? ;-)
- No firepit jumping.
- A reasonable attempt at pre-mid-1600's garb would be appreciated by all. Barbarians are welcome. "This is my Garb" T-shirts will be burned.
- Fun is to be had by all participants. No exceptions.
- This is a party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin' around... We don't card to enter. If you're 18 and can die for your country or go to the electric chair you should certainly be able to stand around and enjoy a party with your mates. You're on your honor otherwise as far as local mundane legalities go. Please do have yer ID on you though, - just in case.

Cheers! See you there!

Hi!
I know it's last minute, but the decision to go to Pennsic this year has been a tough one. I recently had knee surgery and the recovery has been slow. I know that I'm not fully mobile and I know that Pennsic hoofing can be challenging. I don't want to break my self, or my spirt lugging drums and sideshow props around. but I would really like to go to war this year. so, I'm interested in hiring a Sherpa - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherpa

I am looking to hire several people. I have broken it down into different shifts. sign up for as many shifts as you like! I will be arriving Friday evening, but that shift is already taken care of.

Duties:

Shift 1: Bog to Market
meet at my camp in the bog around 11ish (Pennsic time). help me carry my gear up top. I usually spend all day either shopping (not as likely) or playing music at any one of 3 diff locations, Touch the Earth, Marrakech, or Your Inner Vagabond. you can hang out or not as you like.

Shift 2: Market to Bog:
end of day. usually around 6 ish. I sometimes get dinner at the food court, sometimes make dinner back at camp.

Shift 3: Party Hopping
starts at dark/dark thirty. will involve lugging props and show gear to whatever party looks promising.
there will be nights that will be drumming, and some nights will be Bed of Nails and Broken Glass. :-)

Perks/Compensation:

pay (sliding scale based on how much you are willing to help). I don't have a lot of money, but I will part with what I can.

Food and Booze- I will provide food for folks while they are helping me, booze to the folks who are of drinking age.

entertainment - I'm a musician and a performer, I will be busking in the market. if you hang out, I will split the hat with you.

tutoring - drum - I am a skilled percussionist (see references) and can teach anyone solid foundations in Doumbek, frame drum, riqq, davul/tupan, etc.

tutoring - performance - if you are a performer, I teach an excellent workshop on how to build a show. I can also teach some basics of sideshow.

entrance to parties - besides being a Sideshow freak, fire eater and drummer of some skill, I am close, personal friends with the Don Bardici at the Casa Bardici. I am often hired to perform at various parties around pennsic. and even when I am not performing, I cannot recall ever being turned away from ~any~ party at Pennsic. having a drum and knowing how to play is like a backstage pass.

all in all, it sounds like a pretty sweet deal. you get to hang out with me (I'm terribly entertaining) and all you have to do is lug some stuff.

and just who the hell is Mab? you could check out her website - http://jaladrum.org
I have references. (upon request)

drop me a line here, or send me an email - mab at jaladrum dot org
Thank you!

Help! recipe for Hais... (not sure on the spelling)

I used to have this recipe, it was in a TI i think, years ago. But i cant find it and really want to make it for Pennsic.

I remember what goes in it.. just not the quantity's. Its medieval Arabic...15th c i think.

Its essentially dates and breadcrumbs, and a very tiny amount of butter all chopped up and mixed together, then rolled into balls and rolled in chopped up pistachios. I think.

anyway... dose anyone happen to know this recipe and can help me out... or failing that... the correct spelling so I can search online :p

Thanks!
,
Aine

* Vlad's Pleasure Pavilion's 20th Year Festivities*

Greetings unto the comrades and kin that comprise our beloved Pennsic family,

This week, as you are fervently packing and planning for your journey to the hallowed grounds of Cooper’s Lake, we would like to offer you some last minute titillation. What will be waiting there for you, upon your arrival, is an entire week of festivities in celebration of Vlad’s Pleasure Pavilion’s 20th Anniversary. Vlad and his minions hope to supply you with wondrous spectacles of debauchery during the first week of Pennsic that you will not soon forget.

Your itinerary for this hedonistic odyssey we are offering is as follows:

----------------

Monday: Opening Ceremonies

To open this Herculean endeavor we will begin with a mass torch relay around the lake with stops (and hopefully potent refreshment) at various camps of note along the way. Following that will be and filled with performances by many premiere dance troops, the best fire dancers, and of course the lighting of the great Vladian flame!

----------------

Tuesday: Tablero Night

Reaching far back into the past of the Pleasure Pavilion, we have resurrected the ancient and …honorable(?) game of Tablero. In our earliest years at Vlad’s many nights the camp was filled with tables of revelers playing this game which was so abrasive to the liver that Kings and generals would have Tablero sets lobbed at their enemy in hope they would die of Cirrhosis before they ever crossed the field of honor. Likewise, many at Vlad’s have met an untimely demise while engaged in this vile diversion.

If you believe you have the knockers to try your hand at the Tablero tables feel free to try and avail your self of the rules in advance (http://www.gamecabinet.com/rules/Tablero2.html , http://www-cs.canisius.edu/~salley/Articles/tablero.html) . This, however, will be of limited value to you. In lieu of you impending inebriation, and the fact that cheating is encouraged, you will find the rules of limited use.

----------------

Wednesday: Night of 1000 Vlads

One enduring mythos surrounding Vlad’s camp is that only a select few really know what Vlad looks like. In truth, many has been the time that Vlad has adorned friend, acquaintance, and stranger alike in his Coronet and garb and sent them into the crowd as a veritable stunt double. More often than not, none who met the charlatan were any the wiser.

This evening we encourage you all to dress in your best Vlad’s garb. Black (preferably leather) pants and doublet, red or white shirt, and any close approximation of a baronial coronet you can fabricate (or acquire) should suffice.

For those lucky enough to get to the Pleasure Pavilion early enough, Vlad masks will be supplied.

As Vlad has been heard to say, “it’s good to be me”. Don’t you think you should find out for yourself.

----------------

Thursday: The Vladian Games

This night is not for the faint of heart!

We hit the ground running with a proverbial Drag Race…no, not muscle cars and high octane…This event will feature men from the various camps at Pennsic adorned in the most precious female garb they, or we, can muster; navigating various relays and completing many hazardous objectives. Why would any do this you ask…successful participants will be offered jobs as water bearers and stage hands for the Ladies Wet Toga Contest described below. (Those interested should contact Zig or Gunther at Vlad’s)

Following the Drag Race will be some good old fashion mud-wrestling matches, the likes of which have all too long been missing from Pennsic. The matches will be held in challenge format. Any two ladies wishing to face each other should contact the lovely Phia to get the dirt on this salacious little affair.

The Vladian Games are capped off with an event of unequaled beauty and splendor. We all know the loveliest ladies in the known world are found at Pennsic. Thursday the loveliest of the lovely will be found at Vlad’s in the jaw dropping, unequaled, unparalleled Wet Toga Contest. The finalists will be gifted with various decadent prizes, with the winner receiving not only various items of delight, but also VIP treatment and seating at Vlad’s 20th Anniversary Slave Auction. Contestants are urged to sign up as early in the first week as possible at the number of entrants may be capped.

------------------

Friday: The “Fire Cleanses All” Closing Ceremonies.

Guaranteed to be the hottest night at Pennsic. The theme of this evening is all things incendiary. There will of course be fire performers of diverse talents. Further, we will be burning various and sundry artifacts as suits our whim.

If there are any personal effects that you need ‘cleansed’ feel free to add them to our own…as long as they are not explosive, petroleum based, or …living.

And in keeping with ‘turn about being fair play’; as we at the Pleasure Pavilion have burned many outside our camp in effigy, as a coup de gras to our frivolities, this year many of your favorite Vladians and camp friends will, in unnervingly real representation, find their way on to our grand pyre.

-----------------

As always, we have been happy to host you for 20 years, and we look forward to doing so for many, many years to come.

Vlad and his Minions.
