Can you feel it? The light's changing, the air smells like fall, the days are getting shorter as we approach one of the funnest times of the year Halloween.

It seems in the midst of this ragingly great spring time weather we're being treated to in the SF Bay Area, we are once again fast approaching another opportunity for relaxa-shon, fascina-shon and socializa-shon perhaps after a long week of work, or if you're so fortunate and inclined, a long week of surfing, lazing around and bong hits. Whatever ails you or wherever your head is at, I guarantee we can improve your mood without the use of medical institutions, therapists, toxic pharamceuticals, or herbs, though use of the latter is entirely up to you!

A boastful claim? I assure you it's not with the likes of Ryan Vandenbroeck (keys and vocals), Derek Bodkin (drums and vocals), Greg Garvey (bass) and myself (guitar and vocals) serving up mid-tempo and up-tempo grooves al la funk rock designed and delivered to hum and resonate within your very core.

Come join us as we deliberately inject a stain of soul onto the clean, but ordinarily sterile streets of the Pan-Cultural New Yuppist San Jose downtown. It has been built just for you, new brick facades, heat lamps, wrought iron tables upon which fresh Gordon Biersch craft brews and hot appetizers and entreès will be brought to you by svelt and stylish twenty-something wait staff, some of who may be sporting urban mohawks and others of the latest coifs, all of whom have respectfully silenced their cell phones and blackberry's to enhance and heighten your dining, drinking and dancing pleasure.

Ryan Vandenbroeck will (of course!) be serving up flowing smooth, ocassionally complex, often multi-faceted sounds of piano, electric pianos, organ, clavinet. We will be joined by our returning bass player Greg Garvey (formerly of Plum Crazy) who took April off to ensure the safe and healthy delivery of his newborn girl. As he says he's "up to his ears in babies", as Grace is his second. We are fortunate once again, and through the end of June to have Derek Bodkin on drums along with his formidable vocal prowess. And of course, I will be doing my very best to bring it all together using all my vocal and guitar talents in the spirit of "taking us there". (Wherever that may be, just as long as it's somewhere else.)

And whilst contractual obligations expressly prohibit myself or any other member of the band from explicitly "inciting" dancing verbally, just between you and I, in the past, when the jam got "faunky", lower extremeties could not be stopped from shaking and swaying to the beat of the drum. It's OK, San Jose shake it, baby! (Just don't put an eye out with that thang!)

There'll be no cover charge, just phat beers, wines and eats and I believe there is a full bar. And if you still want to party at midnight when we echo the last chords of our last song, the "oom-sick, oom-sick, oom-sick!" club will be happening right next door as it always does with cover and appropriate ID.

"A Bub at the Hub. Whew!" - 420 Show Review

I didn't get tickets to RRE for Friday (or Saturday), so I stayed local heading to Henflings to see some friends playing at one of my regular haunts. I wasn't alone. Brett & Tracy, Penguin, Stacy, and I think a few others from the SC area picked this as their back up plan.

Dream Asylum opened. Derek Bodkin on drums and vocals. I also knew the players from the BC Brewery; Peter on lead and Bruce on rhythm guitar. They did an excellent job of getting the crowd rockin'. After a great set that lasted over an hour the Dave Stein BubHub came on. They sounded better than I had ever heard them before. It blew my mind!

Derek stayed on the drum kit. A new bass player who I had not seen before was on stage getting the crowed revved up calling for a social as he downed a shot of Jaeger.

I'm not sure when it hit me but at some point during the first half of the show I noticed that the music was really taking me places. Places I never expect this band to take me. The quartet was playing like a band instead of a series of leads/solos. Derek is very strong on drums. He was driving the band hard. Previous times I saw the band (one night at the Yankee especially) I thought their drummer was weak. Timid even. Derek was anything but timid!. And the bass player, he really new how to hit the groove, fill in the bottom, stand out with lead breaks, and all that.

Dave on guitar and vocals and Ryan on keys have always been strong. I think filling in the percussion section with two strong musicians has made all of the difference.

One interesting thing I noticed was that Dave never forced his guitar to be louder than the rest of the band. Every instrument seemed to be mixed such that they all blended in a nice gooey way. Though the songs tend to be straight ahead rock, even mellow rock, with some Dead and other covers thrown in for good measure, the jam space was what turned my head around. I was trying to figure out what was causing the music to sound so interesting.

It wasn't any one instrument. It was the ensemble. Amazing! All of the musicians seemed to be on equal ground, able to play off of each other. Pushing and pulling. Driving and following. As we danced around and the music would ebb and flow with intensity I was wondering if it was just me having my own special trip. But no. There were hoots and hollers from people dancing hard. It wasn't just for one song either. It just kept coming. Derek sang a song or two. The bass player sang a song. Dave sang the balance of the tunes.

I understand that the line up beyond Ryan and Dave is some what in flux. I would really like to see this configuration stick together. With Derek and the new bass player this is a real band!

Kind encounters up and down the North Coast. Favorites shows as of late are:
Hum Brews in Arcata to quote DSB song "Tomorrow Still Has Me pt II", the land "where mountains always grow" and that's for sure!
Total funkified dance party. Looking forward to seeing those folks again on Jan 27th.
Fernwood in Big Sur- Folks from all over the state unifed on the floor.
Just about no room to shake my bootah,but....
How cool to check out Sofanya's art next door and catch her intergration of belly dance into groovin'.
