I am the coordinator of HampdenFest 2K9 which takes place on Saturday, September 12th, 11-7p.m.
HampdenFest is an all out, no holds barred Bohemian Arts Festival with all the home grown flare that Baltimore is known for. This street Festival takes place in one of Baltimore's most well-known neighborhoods, Hampden, and celebrates all that is artistic, fun and fabulous about urban living in Baltimore. Three stages of live music and performances, art exhibits, a film festival or local independent film makers, a new and improved KidZone, roving performers and food and beer and fantastic crafts and all that stuff and more. If you have never been to HampdenFest before, you must come this year because it is going to be the best ever!

Call for Fire Performers for The Art of Change Inaugural Ball!

Be a part of this fun and funky historic event in our Nation's Capital!

We have an amazing lineup so far of DC, Philly, VA, MD and NY fire performers... but we still have a few slots left to fill.

We are hoping to have 30 fire performers total for 5 1/2 hours of open spin time punctuated with choreographed pieces. This will give each performer roughly 12 minutes of performance time and 12 minutes of safety duties. Most likely we'll break the group up into shifts to insure everyone gets a chance to do their thing.

Music will be provided by PLF in a 30x50 heated tent. Fire performance will happen outside the tent in a 30x50 parking lot space and will be viewable through a transparent wall to the partygoers inside. It's bound to be cold, so dress accordingly- we plan to perform even if it's snowing!

The tickets for this event are $50 each... but if you sign up as a fire performer you get in free!! Performers must have fire insurance (specialtyinsuranceagency.com) info forwarded to us, bring a can of fuel and at least one duvetine.

Artomatic, Inc. and Playa del Fuego, Inc. – institutions of the mid-Atlantic arts community – have joined together to create this year’s most distinctive inaugural celebration, The Art of Change (www.artists-ball.org), on Jan. 20, 2009 at 8 pm. With the generous support of location sponsors The Warehouse Arts Complex (www.warehousetheater.com) and Douglas Development (www.douglasdevelopment.com), this event brings Washington, D.C., a unique opportunity to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama as President.

Occupying three separate venues on the 1000 block of 7th Street, NW in downtown Washington D.C., The Art of Change will feature visual and performing arts, multiple dance floors, fire dancing and live music. Does anyone know of classes/instructors/fire eaters that would offer private instruction, etc? I'm moving out of the area in August and there seem to be no fire eaters where I'm headed :-(.

This is an exciting new all female variety show at the Palace of Wonders, in Washington DC.
The ladies of Romka are hoping to mix it up and get you thinking out side of your normal everyday show.... to try something new? Always wanted to sing? dance? make balloon animals? whatever the endeavor we are curious about it and would love to consider you for our show!

Perform a live drum solo with Karim Nagi of Turbo Tabla! Egyptian Cane Combinations
Raqs Al Assaya, a cheerful dance from the Sa’id (Upper Egypt), the dancer twirls a cane in playful imitation of the men’s regional martial art. (The men’s version, Tahtihb, is performed with heavy staffs.) Raqs Al Assaya may be presented as folkloric dance, or elements of this dance may be adapted for cabaret-style Oriental dance. Elysa will teach basic cane vocabulary, fun combinations and a short Sa’idi choreography. Students need to provide canes for class. A few canes will be available for purchase at the studio.
Prerequisite: Competency with basic cane technique required.

HIPS is seeking performers for our 2nd annual Variety Show at the Palace of Wonders on November 16th! Last year this event packed the house and raised over $3,000 for HIPS programs assisting sex workers in leading healthy lives.

HIPS is seeking performers of all kinds for our show (burlesque, lip-synching, bellydance, hoping, fire, aerialists, side show, drag king & queen, anything!). Performers will receive a free HIPS t-shirt, professional quality cd of pictures of their performance, promotion on our website, and a donation letter for tax purposes, and of course, the chance to be a part of a great show to a sold-out audience! Performance proposals of up to 10 minutes are being accepted!

HIPS provides counseling, education and support to individuals engaging in sex work or sex trade in the DC area. Our programs include street-based outreach, weekly support groups, HIV prevention education, counseling, assistance in crisis and a 24-hour hotline that assist sex workers in reducing their risks for violence, abuse, HIV infection, and risks associated with drug use or abuse. HIPS also does public advocacy to help reduce the discrimination and violence faced by sex workers. Last year HIPS programs made over 6,000 contacts with sex workers in the DC area, answered over 300 hotline calls and provided hundreds of hours of counseling and assistance.

If you’re interested in performing for the cause email HIPS-at-HIPS.org with information on your act, kind of equipment or support needed, and a brief performance history! We’re looking to create a unique and one-of-a-kind show!

The Belly Horror Show seeks performers!

Romka is pleased to announce a call for performers for the Belly Horror Show 2007!

The Belly Horror Show is a spooky belly dance variety show to be held Oct. 19th & 20th at the DCAC Theater in Adams Morgan. The show features spooky, macabre, and horror or "B-movie monster" themed performances to delight, frighten, and amaze! Performances should be rooted in traditional or fusion belly dance style but can incorporate other performance arts such as burlesque, side/variety show, dark cabaret, etc. Musical submissions are also encouraged.

Belly Horror Show will run two nights, Friday Oct. 19th & Friday Oct. 20th, 10pm - midnight at the DCAC Theater. Tech for performers will be Wednesday Oct. 17th.

Proposals will be accepted until Aug. 20th, 2007.
Submission requirements:

Please submit a short written proposal that includes the information below. In addition, please submit a short video or dvd of a performance - preferably one similar in style or of the actual piece you are proposing.

Looking for something to do after the 4th festivities? I'll be hooping it up with a new 50s inspired act at the Palace of Wonders' Weirdo Show this Thursday, July 5th (Show at 8:00 pm, only $6!!!) ... AND...

If you're thinking that it would be a perfect weekend to hang out on the Mall, you're right! This Saturday (7/7/07) is World Hoop Day! We'll be celebrating from noon-2:00 pm at the northside of the Washington Monument. I'll have lots of hoops and the weather is supposed to be great! Plus, the Folklife Festival will be happening too. It'll be a perfect day to come down to the Mall and celebrate World Hoop Day in the nation's capital!

Having trouble with your isolations? Need to build quad strength for floor work? Then this is the class for you! One hour of butt kicking, body movements and exercises to build strength and flexibility specifically for tribal fusion belly dance.

This is a continuation of "Isolate and Flow", combining the technical movements you have now mastered with an introduction to choreography and the vocabulary & technique of American Tribal Style. 7:30-8:45 Isolate and flow:
Beyond the introduction to belly dance, this class will help you further your ability to isolate. As well as introduce layering and combining movements enabling you to better express the music through your dance.

Healthcare insurance in the United States is expensive, inaccessible, and confusing… And no one knows it better than artists. We are victims of a system that locks us out and prevents us from obtaining the care we need.
But, there is strength in numbers. Artists in the D.C. area are joining forces to address this problem head-on. We need your help.
The national arts organization Fractured Atlas (www.fracturedatlas.org) is working to have an affordable healthcare plan available to D.C.-area artists by mid-2007. But, the first step towards reaching this goal is collecting the data needed to negotiate competitive rates with insurers.
That� s where you come in.

On Monday, October 30th, from 7-9PM, we will be having a meet-up where you can share your thoughts,
ideas, and concerns regarding the issue. The event will be co-hosted by Dance/MetroDC, the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, the League of Washington Theatres, and Round House Theatre and will be held at the Round House Theatre Education Center at 925 Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring.
Light food and beverages will be provided. We are also hoping to provide free healthcare screenings by RediClinic on a first-come, first-served basis.
Seating is limited, so please RSVP by Friday, 10/27 to adam.natale@fracturedatlas.org with your name and artistic discipline (dance, theater, film, etc) and place “RSVP” in the subject line. You can also call Fractured Atlas directly at 212-277-8023 to reserve your spot.

not much going on conversation wise here...but

I figure I would post my own bits about what's going on.

it looks like this tribe has morphed into a promo tribe, which, is relatively fine by me. of course, the whole rest of the tribe-o-sphere is basicly a big promo machine as well.

here's one more blurb about what I'm doing these days...

I've received several requests to start the beginner doumbek classes back up!

I'm starting up my second semester of drum classes this week, starting Wednesday (tomorrow!!!)!

classes are from 7pm till 8:30pm - 1.5 hours for $15.

they are designed to help you build a solid foundation, and should be easy for anyone to hop in.

also, there has been some murmuring of and indoor drum jam on Thursday nights while the fire artists are spinning outside. since we have neighbors, unfortunately, we can't be drumming outside. but still, having drummers nearby really adds something amazing!

so folks, let me know if you are interested/planning on coming out on Wednesday or Thursday or both!!!!!

I'm going to cross post this in about a million places too, but feel free to pass the word on as well

oh, and one last thing! if you are interested in intermediate Arabic drumming, or any other style of drumming, I know of several other great percussionists in the are who I could pass you on to!

Please join me and a handful of absolutely adorable, really talented hoopers this coming Thursday, August 24th , from 7-8:30 p.m. for an evening of hooping lessons, demos and general F-U-N. If you've never hooped before and swear you can't hoop at all, then I bet you've never tried hooping with the new type of custom-made hoops available today: they are high-calibre, heavy, adult-sized hoops.

This is a family-friendly event, and hoopers of all abilities and ages are welcome.

If you have a hoop already, please bring it to use. The event is free for people bringing their own hoops, children under four and "curious onlookers." If you want a rent a hoop, they'll be available for $5. Plus, if you want to buy your own hoop, two professional hoopers and hoop-makers (Talia, aka Miss Joule and a performer at the newly opened Palace of Wonders; and Noelle, aka HoopingPowers, recently awarded Hoop Master of North Avenue and a hoop instructor at Glen Echo Park, among other venues) will be selling hand-made hoops in the range of $18 - $50. Cash or checks only.

The University of Maryland was kind enough to ask me to come give a lecture this week, so I am flying into D.C. on Wednesday morning. Since funding for the temporary sculpture commission did not quite come through, and I had already booked my airline / accommodations, I seem to have two open days, and thought it might be nice to connect up with the community, learn about some fun things to do / places to go while I am in town.

Sorry for the xpost - ATS Class interest?

I am looking to start up a formal "pure" ATS (not to be confused with P.U.R.E.) class after I return from the FC General Skills certification weeklong next month. Before I jump in and commit myself to studio rental, I thought I would poll the DC Tribal folks and see if

a) there is any interest in such a class
b) what day/time has the least conflicts

For those who do not know me, I was an original member of Devyani in Birmingham, AL before moving to the DC area last year. I am going to SanFran in a few weeks for the general skills certification with Carolena and hope to schedule the second half of teacher certification as soon as possible/practical. My class(es) will be 100% FatChance/Devyani style ATS improv. At first I will be offering a "basics" level class focusing on the posture and foundation moves of ATS. Since it is the format that I know and love, I would imagine that my class description & progression will be based on Devyani's class structure. Of course, after spending a week at the FC studio, that may change a bit. :)

At the moment I do not have a studio space, so I realize that any response to this can/may be affected by where and when the class ends up happening.

So - anyone intrigued?

musical group journey that bring us into the Now...the present moment

We are a Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Troupe that mixes ATS, Egyptian Cabaret, Flamenco, Hip Hop, African and Indian dance into our own unique style. We love to try and break the boundaries of what most people consider to be Belly Dancing. Our Love and Passion for Belly Dancing feeds our inspiration and interpretation.

Asharah has been performing since the age of six as a dancer, figure skater, and singer. She began belly dancing with Kim Leary in New Jersey more than six years ago, and has also studied extensively with Artemis Mourat as well as other renowned performers and instructors. As a performer, Asharah aims to blend her training in the Suhaila Salimpour format with the tribal, Turkish, and classic American cabaret styles while adding her own signature dash of drama. She currently teaches at Joy of Motion studios in Washington DC, performs regularly at the Shisha Lounge in Sterling, Virginia, and is featured on the recently released Gothic Bellydance DVD produced by World Dance New York.

This Tuesday, Feb 28 is the start of Arty Gras at the Warehouse Gallery, an art exhibition and sale of works by displaced New Orleans artists. This exhibit is curated by my dear friend Beth Baldwin.

Opening on Mardi Gras with the Arty Gras Gala, a New Orleans-themed party, there will be beads and King cake and a live band and a raffle and all sorts of merriment.

I know some people have already made some Mardi Gras plans, but if you can, please stop by at some point in the evening -- it runs from 7:30-11:00pm. The exhibit and sale will continue through March 19th, so if you can't make it the 28th, please check it out during the run of the exhibit.

inspiration needed!

I'm in need of a little inspiration. Here's the deal. I started a circus club at my college (american university). Now that i'm all official and this stingy-ass school is acctually giving me money, I need a logo. This is something we'll put on posters and shirts and sooner or later letterhead. I was thinking of incorporating the name into the design. Officially we are American Circus. So i was thinking, a monkey juggling the stars on the american flag, or maybe something where a donkey and elephant in clown noses are juggling clubs or maybe balancing the monkey on their sholders while he spins his tail around like poi. but i dont know exactly. Anyone got any ideas? I'm thinking it will be a little tounge and cheek on the patriotic idea..... being in dc and all....
please help!

Hey everyone! I've been involved in all kinds of fire and circus shows for 5+ years.. I took a bit of time off after moving to DC and my focus has shifted a little. I have weekly hoop gatherings at my house for anyone who wants to learn how to hula hoop (and do tricks and such). I'm also a big believer in building your own props so we can help people make their own hoops (regular or collapsible). Of course, the winter months tend to focus more on building stuff then getting outside and hooping! But that will of course shift back to hooping once it gets warmer..

(he's blushing right now, I can tell).

Forty to sixty residents of the greater DC area are needed to perform simple tasks as a group over the course of eight hours on Saturday, April 29, 2006.

The museum is seeking volunteers who are interested in exchanging creative ideas and developing a sense of community through the arts. We hope to build a group of volunteers ranging in age from teenagers to seniors and representing different professions and interests. This will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

I am interested in learning, but have been putting it off for years. I have read how to build my own starter pair, but my experience has shown it's typicly better to study w/ experienced people.

cause we are busy critters, I am throwing down the word. ifin' ya ha'e no heard the buzz in the wind, the good people of ZarbeK are going to be opening a studio in February!

but before that, we got alot of work to do. one of the things we worked out with some of the NVA burners is help hacking out the jungle out back behind our house. we will set up a burn friendly space for poi, fire folks.

and we are going to have a party at the house that night! fire! drums! dancing! we want to bring the positive energy into the studio, and share w/ the community!

January 14th! all day! booze! food! fire! (three of my favorite things!)
there is only one more thing that would make my favorite things list complete, and that's you!
