Egyptian Dance Technique & Performance Skills
(Ages 17 +)
Develop a strong movement vocabulary while preparing to perform as a soloist on stage with artistry, musicality, and confidence. You will be expected to participate in improvisational dance activities using the concepts of each lesson. Although choreography is not taught, choreographic elements, step combinations and stage dynamics that are essential to performing as a soloist will be explored. Bring a veil. Ballet slippers recommended.

Persian dance styles are characterized by upper body fluidity, intricate floor patterns and expressive movements. In this workshop you will practice and improve the technique of Persian dance forms beginning with classical postures and positions of dance and typical stepping patterns. You will practice applying each new concept to a variety of music and different genres of Persian and Iranian dance including Bandari and Baba Karam. Throughout the workshop, each participant will receive individual attention and correction from the instructor. Any previous dance experience is helpful but not required. Suitable for all levels. Space is limited.

The objectives of this workshop are:
•Learn to identify different forms of Persian dance and music and how to dance to each form
•Develop a foundation for a more lifted posture and graceful expressive arms and hands
•Gain insight into Persian culture, music and dance
•Learn how to utilize areas of cross-over from Persian dance to belly dance to improve your practice of both
•Get a great workout!

Rosanna returns to Sounthern Ontario after spending 2 years studying and performing in San Francisco. There, she studied with a who's who of bellydance: Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour, FCBD, Jill Parker, Zoe Jakes, Rachel Brice, Mira Betz, Cera Byer, and Amy Sigil. In California, Rosanna also had the opportunity to expand her movement repertoir outside of bellydance, into vinyasa yoga, breakdance, house, and locking. She is known for her unique interpretation of tribal fusion, incorporating elements of vintage jazz dances as well as hip-hop, while referencing traditional styles of Middle Eastern dance. Rosanna continually strives to dance outside of her own box, and fully admits to having dance ADD.

Gerard Valdez, aka G Cue, has been playing his own brand of chunky, funky house in Toronto and surroundings for years and is a major threat on the decks. He is cofounder of Raw Soul and a regular at underground house jams put on by Nine, Boogie Inc., and Bounce. Gerard has been djing for 16 years of his life, learning and being inspired by Toronto locals as well as visiting stars like Mark Farina and Derrick Carter. Gerard has also played Harvest Festival, Promise Cherry Beach parties, Circa, and Footwork, to name just a few of his musical appearances and milestones.

12-2pm: Yoga and fast technique.
Following a vinyasa warmup, we're going to drill drill drill. We'll be working on improving quality and speed of hip and upper body movements and adding footwork. Multiple level options will be given. Bring a towl and be prepared to sweat.

230-430: Technique contin. and flexibility training
More sweating. We will take advantage of our supple, warm muscles to safely and effectively increase our flexibility. We will be discussing techniques and practices specifically for helping those of us who were not born flexible!! Do you stretch and stretch but don't see any improvement? This is for you.

Saturday October 24th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
1230-230: Fusion, movement invention, and creating choreography
We will be doing a combination of discussion and exercises on fusing dance styles, expanding your movement vocabulary, and creating solo choreography. Participants should bring "ideas in progress" for fusion, movements, and choreographies and be open to group discussion. This workshop is geared for dancers who either want to start performing solo, who want to improve their current solo choreographic work, and also for those who want to break out of using only a specific set of movements.

3-5: Flapper fusion
My dance-baby: a combination of vintage jazz dance and bellydance, completely fabricated from my own imagination. I will be teaching this style as an example of the principles discussed in the earlier workshop. Don't know what on earth this could be? See my video from Tribal Fest 2008:

Sunday October 25th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and bellydancifying your funk.
We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit, breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and locking.

230-430: Slow technique and flexibility.
This technique section will focus on drilling SLOOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYY. We will also be doing yoga and other excercises to work on balance. We will end with more stretches (expanding on what we did on Friday).

As a tribute to Founding Member, Aliya, Tiraz Dance Network is continuing an annual scholarship opportunity to be awarded to a Tiraz member who embodies many of the attributes that were loved and admired in this inspiring performer, instructor and mentor.
The funding and criteria for this award were established by the Tiraz Board of Directors and Aliya’s husband, George Quinn. The recipient will be announced each year at our annual Holiday Hafla.

“The Aliya Quinn Middle Eastern Dance Scholarship” recipient will inspire and/or be a role model in our dance community and like Aliya will possess:

· a professional attitude and commitment to Raks Sharqi while welcoming innovations
· a generosity of spirit, genuine warmth and the desire to encourage others
· a willingness to learn, try new techniques, and to explore new genres

The scholarship award is $250 to be used for Middle Eastern Dance education exclusively.

Middle Eastern Dance Scholarship

Tiraz Dance Network will offer a special scholarship in memory of one of our founding members, Aliya Quinn, to support the training and instruction of our members.

Selection Criteria:
1. Potential recipients must be Tiraz members who are nominated by their instructor or other members of the dance community
2. Nominees must submit an essay and bio which concisely demonstrates their worthiness for receiving the scholarship
3. Tiraz Board Members will appoint a selection committee of at least three individuals to blindly choose the winner of the award based on need, merit, passion for the art form and/or exceptional contribution to our organization or the dance community
4. All decisions based on Selection Committee Recommendations and Board Member Approval will be final

Eligible Dance Instruction:
1. Middle Eastern in nature or an acceptable fusion of Middle Eastern with another dance form deemed appropriate by the Board
2. Offered by an approved instructor of Middle Eastern Dance
3. Approved by the Board with the exception of all Tiraz Dance Network workshops

Disbursement of funds:
1. Funds may not be used to cover travel expenses to and from classes/workshops
2. Funds will be paid directly to the instructor or dance studio
3. Funds must be used within one year of issue date and membership status must be current

We are now accepting nominations. Application deadline is Nov. 15, 2008. The winner of the award will be announced at the Holiday Hafla on December 6, 2009.

Turku is performing this Sunday at the DC Turkish Festival, Pennsylvania Avenue between 12th and 14th Streets NW, in front of Freedom Plaza and two blocks from the White House. Raks Assaya: Women's Egyptian Cane Dance

Workshop with Katayoun

Discover feminine grace through strength, coordination and balance in the context of joyous movement!

This spirited folkloric dance from Upper Egypt (Saidi region) teaches balance, coordination and control. We will explore typical maneuvers and concepts then progress to more challenging combinations, including how to capture the flavor of the dance with your own unique style and personality. As we work on proper cane technique we will incorporate the characteristic belly dance movements and energetic Saidi steps. As time and student ability allow, group choreography, staging, and double cane maneuvers and concepts will be explored. A limited number of dance canes will be provided for use during class. Suitable for all levels, ages 13 and up.

WAMEDA Hafla 2009

I attended the WAMEDA Halfla this weekend and I have never been so rude to. After all of the classes were finished I did a little shopping at one of the venders. Some one I am guessing the coordinator of the event began to bark the vendors needed to close. From what I understood the tables were not going to move but she got the vendors and including my self so anxious that I almost could not compete my purchase. The young lady was trying to swipe my card and this woman kept barking! I do not know where her business sense comes from but obviously she has none. She was rude and created negative energy with all of her barking. She was also rude and mean to some other young lady who was just trying to let her friend know she was there. I do not know what is going on at WAMEDA but it needs to be dealt with if it still wants to exist. I have been to many halflas and bellydance conventions and the energy that I experienced this weekend was anything but positive. I hope the problem is remedied before next year.

Interested dancers should schedule an audition slot by calling 301-585-1105 or via e-mail at silkroaddance@aol.com.

Prospective members should bring a photo with a dance resume and prepare a short solo of approximately 3 to 5 minutes. The piece may be in any dance style, preferably Middle Eastern or Asian, and must be performed in costume and make up. Immediately following the individual solo presentations, all dancers will be taught several ensemble combinations that reflect SRDC’s diverse repertoire drawn from over a dozen distinct cultures. Please bring rehearsal clothes for this part of the audition.

It is highly recommended that individuals interested in auditioning attend a live performance by the Silk Road Dance Company. Familiarity with the company’s mission statement and repertoire -- available at the official website www.silkroaddance.com-- is also strongly encouraged.

Membership in the Silk Road Dance Company constitutes a considerable time commitment. Company rehearsals are presently Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Sectional rehearsals are scheduled according to individual availability. The ensemble presents numerous performances, both locally and nationally, throughout the year, with as many as eight to ten per month during the busiest season.

Technique builds from week to week through structured drilling exercises based on the Suhaila Salimpour format.* Students will also develop strong posture, arm positions, hip work, torso isolations, and basic foot patterns specific to the tribal style. This class follows an organized approach to building the basic elements of tribal and is perfect for students who have never been exposed to tribal belly dance. *Asharah is not an official instructor for the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance, but Suhaila Salimpour has given permission for Asharah to use the Suhaila Salimpour format in her classes.

~Modern Tribal Performance Class: 7:15pm – 8:15pm. $250 for 14 weeks~
The Performance Class Workshop series offers students the opportunity to participate in developing and refining group choreography for a stage performance. Choreographies are created using the movements from their corresponding Technique and Drills classes. Performance Class Workshops will feature each class’s choreography in Winter Dance Concert at Signature Theater on Saturday, December 13. Students enrolled in a Performance Class Workshop are required to be concurrently enrolled in a Saffron Technique and Drills class.

**Finger cymbals are REQUIRED. Please being your cymbals to class every week.
This class builds on technique developed in Saffron Tribal 1 & 2 by using more advanced elements of the Suhaila Salimpour and Fat Chance Belly Dance formats, as well as Asharah’s own signature dance vocabulary. This class will work to develop core strength, stamina, isolations, and musical interpretation. Class work emphasizes the breakdown and drilling of each element. Week 1: Sunday, August 23rd, 3-5 PM: Dynamic Expression

So you always wanted to be an actor. Learn how to access and express different emotions on stage. We will provide exercises for getting into character, learning to respond to other actors on stage, and tapping into your emotional reservoir.

Week 2: Sunday, August 30th, 3-5 PM: Comedy

Don’t you know everyone wants to laugh? This workshop explores how to make your audience laugh, relax, and have fun. We will study the work of famous comedians and provide exercises to improve your physical comedy.

Week 3: Sunday, September 6th, 3-5 PM: Getting Into Character

Participants will come with a character piece in mind and music they’d like to perform to. We will provide constructive feedback and work on some exercises for establishing and strengthening the persona you’ve chosen.

Week 4: Sunday, September 13th, 3-5 PM: Putting it on Stage

Final critique. We’ll also talk about stage makeup, costuming, and ways to relax and overcome last minute nervousness before going on stage.

After a 2 year hiatus from the East Coast, spent training in SF, I'm moving back to the great white north in September. Since its been SOOO long since I've either taught or performed in Toronto and I've done SOOO much since I've been in San Fran, I've decided to pull together an extravaganza eleganza of dance madness. I'm packing in as much as possible into 3 days of teaching, as well as throwing a party with performances by moi, and beats courtesy of 2 of my favourite DJs, Nick McAlister and Gerard Valdez.

Friday October 23rd (Aurora Live Studios, 392 Queen Street E in Toronto)
12-2pm: Yoga and fast technique.
Following a vinyasa warmup, we're going to drill drill drill. We'll be working on improving quality and speed of hip and upper body movements and adding footwork. Multiple level options will be given. Bring a towl and be prepared to sweat.

230-430: Technique contin. and flexibility training
More sweating. We will take advantage of our supple, warm muscles to safely and effectively increase our flexibility. We will be discussing techniques and practices specifically for helping those of us who were not born flexible!! Do you stretch and stretch but don't see any improvement? This is for you.

Saturday October 24th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
1230-230: Fusion, movement invention, and creating choreography
We will be doing a combination of discussion and exercises on fusing dance styles, expanding your movement vocabulary, and creating solo choreography. Participants should bring "ideas in progress" for fusion, movements, and choreographies and be open to group discussion. This workshop is geared for dancers who either want to start performing solo, who want to improve their current solo choreographic work, and also for those who want to break out of using only a specific set of movements.

3-5: Flapper fusion
My dance-baby: a combination of vintage jazz dance and bellydance, completely fabricated from my own imagination. I will be teaching this style as an example of the principles discussed in the earlier workshop. Don't know what on earth this could be? See my video from Tribal Fest 2008:

12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and bellydancifying your funk.
We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit, breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and locking.

On June 20th the Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) will present my new full-length, Bollywood-themed dance concert at Harmony Hall. The term ”Bollywood” refers to India’s enormous Hindi-language film industry that is located in Bombay (now known as ”Mumbai.”) Although Bollywood choreographies originally drew from Indian classical and folk dance, other genres like jazz, hip hop, and even belly dance have recently entered the mix. Bollywood movies have an innocent optimism, an infectious charm, and an unabashed sense of melodrama that paints the world in bright colors — just like the old Hollywood musicals of the Depression years.

Amateur belly dance competition in Baltimore, Sunday July 26

Join us at El Basha Cafe on Sunday July 26 for an evening of fun and excitement.
Come cheer on our dancers as they compete for the grand prize! Stay after for an
Egyptian dance party. Surprise guest performers will be doing short shows

Dear Friends,

It's with mixed emotions that Romka announces that our workshop and performance at Tribal Fest, and our performance in DC at Tribal Cafe will be our last artistic collaboration as a troupe for the foreseeable future. Our parting is bittersweet as we both take the time to focus on our growing solo careers as teachers and performers.

Belladonna & Mavi will continue to work together to host DCTribal Cafe - the country's longest running Tribal Fusion performance event and Belly Horror, our annual halloween-themed weekend. We both plan on being a part of the DCTribal community, remain open to future collaborations, given the right opportunity. : )

For the past five years, Romka has been lucky enough to travel the country sharing our unique approach to belly dance and sword work. Through our workshops & performances at Tribal Fest, Gothla, Spirit of the Tribes, Elevation, Night of 1,000 Goddesses and more we've brought a little bad ass to belly dance. Thank you for all your support, love, and opportunity over the past 5 years, and we look forward to the future!

New Rhythms & Percussion class in Sterling, VA

Starting in May, in addition to the Middle Eastern dance classes, Mosaïque LLC, Language & Cultural Arts, will also have Middle Eastern music classes!! Launching the music program is the Rhythms & Percussion class, the heart of all Oriental music!

Arabic music is so rich with many layers and contexts. The ability to distinguish and identify different genres of music is rooted in the rhythms of the dance. Come experience the joy of creating music with hand instruments and the thrill of discovering the language of Middle Eastern rhythms! They are speaking. Are you listening? And more importantly, are you responding?

After our introductory workshop you have the option to gain a much deeper understanding of the rhythms and music in an intensive 4-week course, “Middle Eastern Percussion & Rhythms” starting May 5.

The heart of all Oriental and folkloric music lies in its basic rhythmic structure on which all other elements of a musical piece are laid. For dancers, this is the starting point they must use to understand, create and ultimately innovate whether they choose improvisation or choreography to interpret the music. This is a hands-on course. Students will use Arabic percussion instruments, primarily doumbek and finger cymbals, to gain wide knowledge of all the common rhythms used in traditional and contemporary Middle Eastern and belly dance music, plus a few not-so-common but very exciting and complex rhythms. We will explore the origins of each rhythm, its structure and flavor. As you progress through the course you will be able to identify, reproduce and play along with popular rhythms as they appear in various musical selections. Dancers, as your knowledge and understanding of these rhythmic structures grows, you will be able to confidently apply the concepts to improvise and choreograph to any piece of Oriental music (or inspired genres) in your own unique style that is also a genuine expression of the music. Some instruments will be available for student use during class.

The Belly Horror Show is a spooky belly dance variety weekend in Washington, DC - including a one of a kind show on Friday Oct. 23rd, 2009 and weekend workshops with stars from the show! 2009 will be our biggest show ever, incorporating a nationally recognized venue, bigger audiences and incorporating weekend workshops! The show features spooky, macabre, and horror or "B-movie monster" themed performances to delight, frighten, and amaze! The Two Ssssss…Shimmies and Spins
This 1 ½ hr workshop will focus on two things that seem to have many dancers stumped:

¾ shimmies - both ¾ up and ¾ down. This workshop will help in better understanding how to do the ¾ shimmy while moving/ walking.

Spins and turns – an easy method of learning to spot and to turn without wobbling
and in a control manner. This skill can be used in any form of dancing – not just
Bellydancing.
10AM - 11:30PM
$20 advance/ $25 at door

Flavors of ATS
This 1 ½ hr workshop is a sampler of the movement vocabulary from FCBD ATS –
-the basic movements will be cover along with some of my favorites. American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) is an improv form of belly dance created by FatChanceBellyDance director, Carolena Nericcio. Improv tribal dance is based on the concept of lead and follow. Specific cues allows a group of dancers to dance together without having to follow a specific choreography. The followers watch for cues to know what movement is being called by the leader and provides the ability to bring dancers together in dance. Note: Please bring your zills – it will be used in this class.

Nubian Fusion
This workshop will teach the basics of Nubian dance along with ATS
inspired movement vocabulary to allow for improv nubian fusion dance. Fan veil
movements will also be taught - please bring a pair if you have it – it is not needed
to do the workshop but some movements can be done with fan veils and will be
taught.
1:45PM - 3:15PM
$20 advance/ $25 at door

Dueling Duets
This 2 hour workshop focuses on ATS movements that can be used to perform in
a duet. Focus will be on ensuring correct allignment, proper usage of cues, movements when dancing with a partner. Attendees must complete Flavors of ATS to attend this workshop. Zills will be used in this class.

Video taping at hafla's??

I am quite aware that one does not video other dancers at haflas and other events without thier permission. But what about taking a video of yourself. I recently danced at a Hafla and have seemed to upset the sponsor by making a video of myself and posting it.
Is this a general Hafla rule? I did not mean to break any rules.

Friends of Kaihea are honored to announce the 3rd Fire in the Belly. This event started as a benefit to raise money to help a wonderful performer and friend, will continue as a torch to her memory.

Held in honor of Kaihea's birthday the event will feature performance by her many talented friends, with a focus on several styles of belly dance, fire performance and more!

Proceeds donated in part to DCTribal, which she co-founded & to Cancer Charities, to help fund research on the terrible disease that took our beloved Kaihea from us entirely too early.

There will also be a 'yard sale' early upstairs at the Palace where some of her belongings will be for sale....to help keep them 'in the community".

Hey peeps! I know this post is spam-tastic, but... here we go.

Want greater control over your belly dance isolations? Need a little oomph in your dance training?

Come drill with me on Tuesday nights, 7:30-8:30pm at Joy of Motion Atlas! A new rotation of technique drills classes begins next week, April 7th. This is a drop-in class, so no pre-registration is required. And the Atlas studio is even easier to get to with the new H St shuttle, with regular service from the Gallery Place Metro station.

Based on the Suhaila Salimpour format, this weekly class focuses on layering belly dance hip movements over various traveling steps at varying tempos and timings. Each class begins with a vigorous warm-up to improve students' stamina and flexibility, and every class includes glute isolation drills and undulation practice.

This class is for belly dancers of all experience levels and styles. Everyone is welcome!

The dances of Iran are diverse, just like the culture. Learn to identify the different styles of music and dance from this rich and varied culture. This course of study covers technique and concepts for the most popular social and performance styles of Persian (Iranian) dance, each with its own distinct flavor, movement vocabulary and music. Participants experience the delicate and lyrical movements and postures of the classical Persian style to the fiery and vigorous regional folkloric dances. As you become more proficient you can apply the dance moves and concepts appropriately with confidence to a variety of Persian music. This course is a must for belly dancers who perform for Persian audiences! Spring 2009

The following classes will be held at Studio Bleu in Sterling, 21944 Cascades Parkway, Suite #100.

Egyptian Dance Technique & Performance Concepts (Ages 17+): Recommended for aspiring and current performers whether novice or professional. This progressive course allows all levels to develop a strong movement vocabulary while developing solo performance skills. Tues. March 3–April 21, and May 5–June 23, 8– 9pm.

Middle Easern Dance Technique & Drills I (Ages 13+): Absolute beginners and those with less than six months experience start here. Gain a solid understanding of the fundamental movement vocabulary as you practice proper technique. With a focus on aesthetics, fitness, safety and FUN, students will improve skills and expand movement vocabulary while polishing technique. Sun. March 8–March 29, and April 19-May 10, 11:00am–12:00pm.

Middle Eastern Dance Technique & Drills II (Ages 13+): Ideal for dancers with six+ months experience and intermediate to advanced dancers. This class starts with fundamentals and progresses to more advanced concepts. Some of the more challenging concepts include exploring accents, layering, level changes, and dynamic combinations with infinite variations. Sun. March 8–March 29, and April 19-May 10, 12:00pm – 1:00pm.

Technique & Combination Drills – All Levels
Sun. May 17 - June 21, 11:00am – 12:00pm.

Middle Eastern-Inspired Veil Dancing (Ages 12 +): Dancing with a veil teaches grace, fluidity and a lifted posture. The veil is a wonderful prop for individual expression. Students will learn how to best frame slow, hypnotic dance movements, and choose patterns and steps that work well with lyrical veil maneuvers. Students will explore the dynamics of creating shapes, patterns, poses and wraps, plus creative ways to incorporate veil into your dance. A limited number of veils will be available for student use in class. Sun. May 17 - June 21, 12:00 – 1:00pm.

Intro to Persian Dance Workshop (All Ages)
Pre-registration Required. Sun. March 29, 1:00pm – 2:00pm.

Rachel Kay Brookmire, Egyptian Dance, 12:00 – 1:00: Rachel is the founder and Creative Director of Sahara Dance, DC's Center for Middle Eastern Dance. A sought-after performer and instructor, Rachel specializes in modern Egyptian raqs sharqi. She has shared the stage with international artists including Lebanese pop stars Nancy Ajram and Fadel Chaker. As the Director of Sahara Dance resident company, Raqs Sahara, Rachel seeks to elevate Oriental dance as a theater performance art. Kostana, Turkish Dance, 1:15 – 2:15: Kostana is an Oriental Dancer based in the Washington, DC area specializing in Turkish Oriental and Romani (Gypsy) dance as well as Egyptian Raqs al Sharqi. She has studied with renowned Romani and Cabaret dancers in Turkey as well as throughout the United States. Kostana teaches at Saffron Dance School in Arlington, VA and is Director of Programs for The World Music Folklife Center. Join Kostana for an introduction to Turkish 9/8 and learn how Turkish Oryantal and Turkish Romani dance differ from Egyptian Raqs Sharqi. Explore movements for the 9/8 rhythm with basic footwork, gestures & fun combinations!

Azin, Persian Bandari, 2:30 – 3:30: Azin is of Persian descent and owner of Born 2 Dance Studio in Vienna, Virginia. She offers a wide range of world dance programs including a variety of Persian and Iranian dance forms. Azin will impart her passion and knowledge of these dances from her heritage in a high-energy class focusing on the joyous Bandari dance! With strong ties to the sea, Bandari reflects the traditions of the Persian Gulf region of Iran where the influence of Arab, Indian and African cultures blends with those of the Persian culture. Azin will present the steps, movements and flavor of this popular and spirited dance which Iranians perform in celebrations worldwide!

About Canines for Disabled Kids:

Canines for Disabled Kids is a small non-profit located in Princeton, Ma. They raise money to provide disabled children ages 6-18 with "scholarships" for service dogs.

The wait list for a service dog can be up to 5 years. By providing these scholarships, the kids get on a much shorter waiting list and receive their service dog more quickly.

Canines for Disabled Kids sponsors social dogs for autistic children, balance/walker dogs for mobility impaired children, hearing dogs for deaf children and general service dogs. In some cases we will also sponsor therapy dogs used specifically for children.

You don't want to miss this special 2-day intensive with Aisha Ali! Internationally recognized authority on the dances of Egypt and North Africa, Aisha traveled to the Middle East in 1971 to observe firsthand many traditional styles of dances not seen in the United States. She made subsequent visits to Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia from 1973 to 1997 to document folkloric materials that were fast disappearing. In 1973, she stayed among the Ouled Nail in Algeria, a tribe famous for its dancing women. Over the years she has frequently danced at celebrations in Egypt with the Banat Maazin, a Nawar gypsy family of Ghawazee. In the United States, Aisha directed the North African performers at the Los Angeles Olympics opening festival in 1984.

SATURDAY (2pm-6:30pm): GHAWAZEE: Includes brief history of the Nawar and the Halab, playing segat, interpreting the music, discussion of traditional and modern costuming, movement technique and styling, shimmies, Beladi Stick dance—Saidi, Beladi Et Teit —Delta, plus rare video footage of the Nawar Gypsies will be shown.

SUNDAY (12pm-4:30pm): OULED NAÏL (Algeria): brief history of the tribe, their customs & costumes, movement techniques, impromptu dance session
SHIKHAT DANCE (Morocco): brief history of the dancers, movement techniques, impromptu dance session
MOTREB DANCE (Iran): brief talk about the dancers, their costumes, movement techniques, impromptu dance session. Students will need a veil for this class. I will have a few extra on hand in case anyone forgets!
