Things to do - July 24-26

I will be visiting DC. (from Pittsburgh), and I am looking for bellydance things to do: classes, performances, Arabic/Turkish music, shopping. I have studied and performed bellydance for many years, I am looking for non-beginner oriental instruction, e.g. I've tried to find whether Faten Salama teaches while I am there, but the internet has let me down. Chances are that I have a car, and I will stay close to the zoo. Also, places to see Arabic/Turkish musicians and buy "toys" would be fabulous. Thanks a lot for all help!

Anthea made Midsummer Magic this past weekend!

I just want to share from Anthea's Midsummer Magic student recital this past Sunday.

What a show!

Anthea performed a beautiful veil poi dance. It was totally sublime, drawing you into a peaceful spell to sit entranced while she made beautiful symmetrical patterns in the air around her, her expression like a child in wonder at the colors she wove through the air. And yes, her patterns were perfectly timed to the music, and perfectly symmetrical on both sides through the whole song. I can only imagine how much arm strength and stamina that requires!

Bonita performed a wonderful fusion fan dance with latin influences. She was FABULOUS! Her energy, her expressions, the dramatic snapping of her fan! I loved the way she used it to accent and frame the moves. And the poses, and the high steps! My only regret was that my husband had stepped out and missed the whole thing.

Yaalini had us all laughing with her comedy snake dance. What an innovative concept! It was totally unexpected.

Anthea's student class composition was fantastic! It was one song, divided in sections with different teams of dancers performing to each section. The transitions were smooth, the costuming very nicely unified and yet distinct between sections, and the parts of the song were well balanced. I've never seen such a creative and efficient use of a classroom assignment to help the students develop group choreography skills.

In the improv solos and in the tribal odyssey it was very apparent that the students had worked to develop a wide range of skills. I could see that Anthea teaches the difference between tribal and cabaret, concepts in choreography, stage presentation, and the playing of rhythms on zills, tamborines, and drums.

Unfortunately as a vendor I didn't get to watch the entire show, but I did see enough to know that Anthea has a great group of students who worked very hard to put on a great show!

i know i asked this a while back...currently i am submerged in:

*Women in the City of the Dead (from Yasmin's booklist) has me doing some serious thinking.

*Im also more thoughtfully studying The Key Muscles of Hatha Yoga---not a bedtime read really, but wonderful for moving forward with physiology/anatomy studies to get to know my body and the mechanics of movement better.

I also have a number of books i will delve into as i begin a yoga teacher training this fall. :)

what are y'all reading?? what would you recommend (or not!). any burning thoughts/questions you have that we could all benefit from?

hey everyone
I am looking to start a new tribal fusion class in DC. I normally teach out of my studio in VA, but have lots of people asking me about classes in the city & would like to get that going. Does anyone have any recommendation of places with studio space to rent. Or places to stay away from?

thanks
Belladonna

Hello Dancers,

June 28th and 29th, 2008 (that right in two weeks) I'd like to do some Turkish Master classes with Artie at her studio in Silver Spring, MD, but I need some other dancers who are interested in getting down in a Turkish way to help fill the rest of the class. It would be 3 hours each day starting at 2pm - the first two hours movement breakdown and dance, the last hour watching video footage, the cost $35 per day. If you can come to one or both days please email me at shemsdance at gmail dot com - so I can make sure we have enough folks to run the class. Please, please forward this info on to anybody you think might be interested, students, friends or peers.

American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) is an improv form of belly dance created by FatChanceBellyDance director, Carolena Nericcio. Improv tribal dance is based on the concept of lead and follow. Specific cues allows a group of dancers to dance together without having to follow a specific choreography. The followers watch for cues to know what movement is being called by the leader and provides the ability to bring dancers together in dance. This movement vocabulary is known across the country and other parts of the world. Dancers who know ATS can dance with other ATS dancers without ever having dance together before.

Lynchburg Hafla 2008

Okay Ladies it is that time of year again. Lynchburg Tribal is proud to present their 2nd annual Lynchburg Hafla. With the great success we had last year we are hoping to present another wonderful event. This year we are planning on having a workshop that morning and afternoon followed by the Hafla. The event is schedule for September 27, 2008.

So if you think you or your troupe would be interested in participating in the workshop, Hafla, or both please send me your contact information (name, address, phone number, email) to eeimp1@gmail.com. If you are part of a troupe I only need one contact person per troupe.

We are planning on having the participates packages together by June 1. These packages will have time, location and cost of the workshop, who is teaching it, the contents of the workshop, and the deadlines for the fee. The packages will also have Hafla information such as start time, when the venue will open up to the dancers, and of course where the after party will be.

I look forward to hearing from everyone.

Hello all,

I am interested in becoming a certified belly dance instructor this summer, I have been performing for a year, and many people ask me if I give lessons, but i do not yet professionally. I ask my university if i could teach there but they said i need a CV.

Are there any places i can get certified in in Mary land or the general DC Metro area?

How long does it take to get certified?

Thanks so much! Appreciate your help

I just spent 3 hours working with Souhail. He has so much knowledge to share, and I feel he is a true gem to our dance community. Having worked with dancers like Farida Fahme and Fifi, not to mention having studied and played Arabic music - both classic style and cabaret - most of his life, he is very generous in sharing his experience with others.
Anyway, there are still slots available in his RHythm & Movement workshop tomorrow if anyone is free and wants to take it. His workshop will help you with both choreography and improvisation - working with live music and pre-recorded....
I think anyone, no matter their level of dancing (as long as they have some movement vocabulary) can benefit from working with him.
This is an incredible opportunity - don't miss it!
Details at www.wmfolklifecenter.org
Thanks!

Reyhan Tuzsuz & Turkish Romani dance

I received a message today from one of Reyhan's longtime students and I want to share it because I think it's important that anyone who has gotten anything from this dance give something back to those who gave it to us.
This is Ferda's email (please read my comments at the end):
"...you know Reyhan Tusuz, the wonderful Turk Roman dance teacher from Gaziosmanpasa in Istanbul. Some of you have met with her and taken a class. I have been a friend and student of Reyhan's for 5 years and on my last visit I learned some very very upsetting news and I felt I had to do something.

Some of you may know about what has been happening in Sulukule in Istanbul the oldest and longest settlement of Roman people in the world. The current city government is demolishing the historic area, forcing the people (who happen to be Roman some of the most marginalized people in the world and very poor) to accept very limited money and leave their homes. The money is not enough for the families to buy another home in Istanbul as the house prices in Istanbul are very high. Therefore the people must leave Istanbul or pay rent (very high rent) until their limited mney is gone and then they will have nothing. The whole community and this unique culture are being scattered and are at risk of being lost. For more about this you can read this here http://www.casbahdance.org/2006/10/plans-to-demolish-sulukule-istanbuls.html or this http://romnews.com/community/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=1804 for more info.

But this email is about our friend and teacher and a great Rom ambassador to the world, Reyhan Tuzsuz. Last week I learned that Reyhan's family is being forced out of the gecekondo neighbourhood where they were born, where they have lived with their extended family, where their mother died, where her children were born and are being raised and where she has brought the world to learn about her clture and especially her dance. The world is richer for it. So, after witnessing Reyhan's sadness about losing her home and her fear for what they would do because the government will not pay the (very little) money until they leave their home, and she has no money to put a security deposit down to rent a new home in her neighbourhood, I felt I had to do something as Im sure you would, if you knew...

So here I am telling you all. If you would like to help, if you would like to contribue to preserving this treasure of a dance teacher in istanbul, THEN ...here is what you can do:

1. Send this message out to others who may want to help

2. Collect money from your community, even little bits will help THEN...2 options I can offer...

Reyhan has no bank account so the safest way to send money is by Western Union, I think. You can do it on-line with your credit card, (there is a 20% fee) give her name Reyhan Tuzsuz and her location (Istanbul Turkey) and then Reyhan goes to the nearest Western Union office to her with her ID card and picks up the money.

OR another option is you can visit the paypal website and go to the account yildizdanz@yahoo.com and the name Janet Shook. You can make a donation with no charge there.
Jennet has been a student of Reyhans for five years. She moved to Istanbul largely for the purpose of studying with Reyhan and helping her with her career. Janet manages many of Reyhans affairs and on several occasions before has used her account to transfer money to Reyhan.

This is our chance to help Reyhan and her family and to give other dancers a chance to learn with her. I hope together we can help this wonderful woman"

There is another way to help Reyhan. She is teaching in Washington, DC on May 17 & 18 at Herdeljezi (& also in NJ on the 19th and in NY on the 20th - if you contact me, I'll put you in touch with her sponsors there....).
Our "cause" this year is helping the Tuzsuz family get housing. Any proceeds after expenses are met and all artists are paid will be split between the WMFC and our gift to the Tuzsuz family. We will also have a collection box available for those who want to make personal contributions directly to Reyhan. Please spread the word and urge others to come as well.

We are also planning a tour with Janet Shook for the Tuzsuz family in the Fall which will include Turkish Romani, Oriental and Folk dance. However, this tour hinges on whether or not we can get artists visas for the Tuzsuz family - which is no easy task after 911.
However, I remain positive that we can pull it together. They will tour and teach and perform across the U.S. and all money will go to help them not only find a house but a studio where they can continue to teach and preserve their art & culture.
For those who don't know, Reyhan's husband is an amazing violin teacher and he also teaches percussion. Brad took classes with him while we were there.
I hope the entire community will come together to support this lady and her family. She is a true gem, and speaking personally I can say that she & Husnu have enriched my life one thousand-fold. I feel a great debt to her, and it is for that reason I will work my butt off to make this happen. But we can't do it alone. We need everyone's support. Please feel free to pass this info. along. I'll be posting everywhere, so I apologize for the crosspost.
yours in dance,
Kostana

$100 Dance Scholarship

Katayoun mentioned it in the other Tiraz Belly Dance Convention thread, but here it is in more detail:

One of the many raffle prizes that will be given away on 4-12 at the Tiraz Convention will be a $100 Dance Scholarship. You must be present to win and everyone who enters the convention will receive one ticket. The scholarship is for live dance instruction only by a verifiable teacher. No videos or costumes. The winner will inform the Tiraz treasurer (Shukufeh) of her or his intentions and a check will be mailed directly to the instructor. It can be broken up in to two or three payments if necessary.

This scholarship fits perfectly with Tiraz' first mission statement, "To educate and connect the Middle Eastern dance community".

I hope to see you there!

Instructors:
Ava Fleming:
With her extensive knowledge and experience in international dance
styles, Ave Fleming brings a truly unique and modern approach to the
belly dance community.L ocated in Phoenix, Arizona, her teaching and
performances throughout the Southwestern region have created quite a
demand for her practice of Raks Sharqi. Her focus on isolations and
music interpretation has captivated audiences here in the U.S. and
abroad. As the director, choreographer, and creator of the Black Opal
Dance Company, audiences have had the opportunity to see her creative
dance style amplified by ten. Ava's 2004 Belly Dancer of
the Universe title (Egyptian category) has only furtherd her popularity
with all who have seen her dance. Ava's instructional and performance
dvds have inspired and challenged many who have taken on the task of
studying her elegant example of the modern belly dancer through which
novices and
masters alike will gain challenge and insight

Kami Liddle:
Kami's style is what she calls a modern fsuion of an ancient dance.
Although she is primarily a tribal dancer, she pulls from the various
styles of belly dance that she has studied, as well as modern, hip hop,
jazz, and bhangra dance. Kami performs both as a solo artist and also
collaborates wh iotther dancers. She is a guest artist for The Indigo,
directed by Rachel Brice, and has also worked with Samatha Riggs of Boom
Boom Bollywood on choreography and periodically performs with the
company. Kami was nominated for "Best Kept Secret" and "Best
interpretive Artist" for 2005
Zaghareet Magazine and won the title "Entertainer of the Year 2005" at
the Wiggles of the West. Kami currently tours with The Bellydance
Superstars.

Samantha Riggs:
Samantha Riggs is the Founder, Artistic Director, Choreographer and Lead
Dancer for bothB oom Boom Bollywood and The Sexy Scallywags Pirate
Circus in Tempe, Arizona, and is a performer with Fyrae fire arts
troupe. She was the assistant director as well as a core dancer,
teacher, musician and choreographer Dfoorm ba Tribal Fusion Dance Troupe
(winners of the 2006 Zaghareet "Best Troupe" award) from 1996 until
their dissolution in October of 2006. Samantha has traveled the world
teaching Bollywood Style Dance, Tribal Style Bellydance, Tribal Fusion,
Fire Arts and Pirate Bellydance. Her serious obsession with Bollywood
movies has, over the years, infected others... leading to her higher
goal of connection and understanding between the Western and the Ind-Ao
merican communities. Samantha has a long history on stage withm any
other forms of theatre arts including fire performance, stage combat,
acting, stand-up comedy and comedy improv, singing, drumming and folk
dancing .

http://www.wameda.org
http://www.sadiebellydancer.com

I knew for about a week thanks to her online newsletter, but saw that WAMEDA was finalizing everything and decided to wait before exploding the news, but Sadie (with her new IAMED DVD of Slow Moves Taqsims/Cheftetellis comes out next week, hopefully) will be the guest featured performer at WAMEDA's 2008 hafla event in September (the 12th-14th), and she'll be doing a weekend of workshops in accordiance of her DVD and personal teachings.
This is HUGE for both Sadie and WAMEDA, getting a catch like her to grace our area (and to say tthe least, I've been begging to find a way of getting her to come to the DC area for the longest time). Give the WAMEDA brass a good pat on the back and a bearhug for this one, next to watching and meeting Deleilah and Aziza, this will be the best after-birthday present I could've gotten. :)

PS--HMC (Hollywood Music Center)'s Nher has anticipated the 3 DVDs Sadie shot late '07 with them should start seeing a release date of early April (at the moment), and the ears from a distance claim it was one of her best efforts and HMC's best shoots in their DVD works, so that's also somethng to look forward to...

Turkish Rom Dance Classes in Glen Echo Park

Hi All! Just a reminder to folks interested in learning more traditional Turkish Rom steps, gestures and combinations.
I'm teaching an 8-week series at Glen Echo Park in Maryland on Monday nights 7:30pm - 8:30pm starting on March 31.
We will be focusing more on Rom folkloric/social dancing elements which can also be included in your Oriental dance. We will be exploring the Romani 9/8 rhythm based on what I"ve been studying with Reyhan, so hopefully it will be new to some of you, viewing video footage of actual Romani men & women dancing (in one class), and I may teach a few new steps I've learned from Turkish folkdancers as well.
Last class is Monday after Herdeljezi Festival, so we will be able to review some of what is taught at the festival...
There is a MINIMUM of 5 people needed for the class to run. So far, 3 are signed up. Don't wait too late to sign up!
To register: www.glenechopark.org
Click on "Classes & Workshops" and "Spring Schedule 2008". Turkish Rom is listed under "Folk". It's $120 for 8 weeks. A steal of a deal!
Thanks!
Kostana
