Greetings Balt-Wash Burners!

Megs here from the Regionals Committee at BMHQ. In late October, we posted an open call out to this list for a new Regional
Contact for Washington, DC. We’ve heard from four people who are interested in the role and
now, we’d like to hear from the rest of you. Since Regional Contacts are
members of your local community and are working to help strengthen and
foster connections in your region, the Burning Man Project decided that
we would like to gather feedback about the candidates under
consideration to assist us in making the best selection for your local
community. We are using a confidential survey tool to collect this
information. We will keep the feedback loop open until Friday, November 20th.

The candidates are:

Tom Martin aka TomCat

Call Out for Washington, DC Regional Contact Candidates

As many of you know, Brian Shaw aka Bink has moved to Baltimore. He will be serving
as a Regional Contact along with Ben Saarsgard for Baltimore and
moderating the baltimore-washington-announce list. In the interest of
having local representation in DC, we wanted to re-open the search for a
Washington, DC Regional Contact. Our last call-out turned up great
candidates, Mark Borden aka Booger and Maureen Anglin aka Armadillo.
Darrell Duane aka Progress has also expressed interest in the role.

We would like to move forward and choose a new Washington, DC Regional
Contact from this group but wanted to open up the post to the community
in case anyone else was interested in the role.

***The deadline for expressing interest in the role is next Wednesday,
November 4th.***

If you would like to apply for the role, please read on to learn a
bit more about the kinds of qualities and skills we look for in a
Regional Contact.

What does it take to be a Regional Contact? By now you’ve likely read
the Letter of Understanding
(http://regionals.burningman.com/network_letter.html) which has a very
good description of the nitty gritty tasks a Regional Contact must
perform, but what about the other aspects? What are the criteria and
qualifications by which the Regional Committee chooses a Regional
Contact to represent Burning Man?

There are some basic skills that you need to have for this role – you
must be computer literate, of course, and a good communicator with both
spoken and the written word. But there’s much more to the role than nuts
and bolts.

A Regional Contact must have leadership skills and be committed to
collaboration. Have you worked in a group before? Managed a team or a
project? It is important that RC’s be enthusiastic about working with
and organizing people. This role is, at its very core, about
collaborating with others. You must be the sort of person who is
committed to collaboration – with co-regionals, with the participants in
your area, and with regionals across the network and those in
geographically adjacent areas. Sometimes, it’s important to view
leadership as “followership”.

In many cases, especially as the Network grows, and particularly in
urban areas, we’re asking Regionals to come aboard as members of a team
of co-regionals. Our process for selection of these teams represents a
very studied formula to create a balance of personality types, of
thinkers and do-ers, of diverse segments of a community, and a range of
leadership qualities. You may not end up working with your “best
friends” in this role – our “chemistry equation” may put you in a team
with people you have never met and put you in contact with members of
very divergent local sub-communities. Even if you are the sole regional
contact in a smaller area, a dedication to collaboration with a diverse
variety of people and viewpoints is the only way you will meet success
in this role.

As in any other situation where people work together, it’s not always
easy, and challenges can arise. Your local Regional Contacts would agree
that sometimes you may be put into challenging situations requiring you
to help facilitate your community through a problem or issue. More and
more often, we look for RCs who posses the skills to be able to help
mediate and facilitate in such situations virtually or in person. A cool
head and a nondefensive attitude are integral tools to this role – you
must keep them about you at all times, especially when things get rocky.
Being able to remain impartial to situations and conflicts that might
involve your friends or peers is important. You need to be able to see
the big picture and to help the others to do the same or to feel heard
and find resolution. You will often be called upon to use active
listening skills, and you must be aware of your ability to make everyone
feel heard.

We specifically look for individuals who can speak about Burning Man
culture and values, and do so in a way that inspires people towards
shared vision. A good Regional Contact should be able to help a
community consider a local regional mission. This always helps in moving
and motivating a community towards projects beyond celebrations.

Being active in your local community and civic minded is another quality
we appreciate. It’s great to want to produce the next big Regional
event, but there is so much more that can be done to help bring people
together and share the Burning Man spirit and ethos in the world. We
seek to work with RC’s who have an interest in bringing local burners
together to engage in social or civic projects that benefit the local
community, for example – the sort of interaction that reaches far beyond
parties or events. Indeed, a regional does not need to attend every
party or event in their area, but he or she should maintain an active
awareness of the local social climate, nonetheless.

Being open to new ideas and concepts is another important quality. RC’s
need to be able to listen to and hear information from various sources
and to be open to working with the people or concepts present. Let’s not
forget that Radical Inclusion is one of the 10 Principles, at the
forefront of being an RC. Sometimes you will need to put your personal
preferences or opinions aside and help to do the right thing for your
community. Remember, being an RC isn’t about you, it’s about your
community.

Other skills that are important to this role include good written and
communications skills, an enthusiasm for working with people; an ability
to articulate the values of Burning Man, and to offer insight and
interpretation of how the “Ten Principles” and other Burning Man ethics
can apply to your local community and the world around us.

This is not an all inclusive list of qualities we look for in Regional
Contacts but hopefully this does the job of giving you a bit more info
and understanding of the role. If you have other questions, feel free to
get in touch with us via regionals@burningman.com OR get in touch
with Bink or Ben and start a conversation with them about their
experiences as an RC.

If this looks familiar, that's because it is an edited version of fall's call for a PDF PONY (so sue me--I'm freakin lazy):

PONY UP! Since you're still feeling a bit of the glow from last weekend and you're just bursting with creativity, please apply to build the next PDF Pony. Our next Burn comes on Memorial Day weekend of 2010.

Maybe you were thinking we were flooded with applications to build the Pony over the years and you don't stand a chance-- well, THINK AGAIN! I've only gotten eight applications over the past seven burns. On the two occasions we didn't get applications, I had to beg and plead. (THANK YOU Ember and Monk-E)

Maybe you were thinking the organization doesn't spend all that much money or care much about the Pony-- well, THINK AGAIN! You can get a grant up to $700, and the Pony is the centerpiece of the Burn. Everyone cares and appreciates a good Pony.

If you have an idea, please fill out the info below and return it to me offlist before Dec 15 (can ya handle the deadline pressure, slacker??). Thank you!

Hello all you sexy burners and the one ugly one,

Please please please read this carefully before responding. There are so many people I care for who don't have tickets, please don't be insulted if this process doesn't work for you. A few weeks ago, I had 10 tickets and there were 70+ requests for those tickets, many from those I know and love. There were a few people who were slightly annoyed at me because I didn't give them the tickets they asked for or hinted at they needed. I want to get you tickets, I do. And I will do my best to do it. I will not be able to personally respond to every request, and I apologize in advance for that.

Here we go: Teamed with a Burner developer, I am testing the process for matching people with extra PDF tickets to those people who don't have a ticket. Hopefully it's something we can roll out by the next PDF. If you'd like to be a guinea pig, please read the rest of this email. Yes, there are rules, sorry. But once you get at ticket and are at PDF you can shed those pesky rules. Until then, help us and yourself out by strictly adhering to the process. Thank you in advance!

Also, please know how the ticket game usually goes with PDF: there is a shortage of tickets a number of weeks before PDF -- so everyone who needs tickets makes alternate plans; and then all the tickets are freed up days before the event -- because people's plans change, and they are flaky hippies, etc. Unfortunately by this time, most people have made alternate plans. So the most flexible people are the winners in this game. Therefore, those looking for a ticket who test this service please know you probably won't get any notification until days before or event during the event.

Back again for our fifth year on the Playa, the Black Rock Beacon is gearing up for Black Rock City 2009, bringing you a unique mix of news, opinions, photography and smoked-pork-product trivia.

Fueled by ridiculous amounts of non-vegan-friendly, high-protein, chemically preserved porcine goodness, we keep tabs on what's going up and down on the Playa. We're planning five issues (six if somebody burns the Man early), and we have some new equipment that should sharpen up our photo quality.

We hope you'll enjoy reading us as you explore the city, and maybe drop by during the 23 3/4 hours we're frying up our namesake . We'll be at Evolution at 5:30. But if you want MORE, we can dish it out. We need a few good Burners to help us write, edit, produce, and distribute the paper, and to give us a hand with the preparation and consumption of tasty breakfast meats. Beginners welcome, except in the kitchen. And, um, well, if you like our paper and want to give us a hand via PayPal, we're up for that too.

Hello pretties...chim-chim here coming from the DFW Burner scene (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) and NTXB (North Texas Burners)--the same peeps who organize Myschievia in October.

Anyhowz, I'm in the process of transitioning my way to Richmond for work, and I'm interested in meeting some of the peeps in the D.C. area. My brother works in D.C. as well, so I'll surely be visiting more often. I definitely would like to see what D.C. has to offer. I'm no spinner, but I'm great at rangering and public relations. This will be a way to say "bon voyage" and send blessings to our wayward burners on their way out to the playa.

I'm trying to arrange my travel/event sched for the winter and would love to do it around Santarchy ( i wanna go this year!!!). (please no snide comments on the fact that i'm scheduling six months in advance...)

Is there a particular weekend that "the powers that not-be" try to have santarchy? Is there any 'set' schedule? Or, barring that, is there anyone who's helping to organize that I can talk to?

PEX Summer Festival- 4th of July Weekend

Hello to all of my DC friends, and friends of friends, and friendly strangers,
We Pexies are hard at work to make our first annual summer festival an amazing time. The energy is ripe. And large. You know how we do things, don't you?
I won't say much more than that, other than we have a lovely lineup with master musicly minded members from across the US, ridiculous workshops like aerial silks, object manipulation of all kinds, yoga, etc, and speakers such as Daniel Pinchbeck and the like.
Want to chill for a weekend with your East Coast Burning friends? Wanna connect on a deep level with The Philadelphia Experiment and friends before we hit the playa for the 11th year? Now is the time, the time is now... Although we hope to hold this event for many years to come, this will be a momentous time, this event will be saturated with our extended family, true makers from across the country.

Z-SPOT The Musical !!!

Hey Everybody,

Afew years ago at PDF the DC Burners performed Z-Spot The Musical. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen Live...er...uh...Dead. I remember there was a guy taping the whole thing. Is that tape available anywhere? I looked on youtube and other places and was able to find the trailer, but not the whole video that was shot at PDF. I would love a copy of that even if it is not the best quality. It is such a good memory and such a fun show.

PONY UP!

PONY UP! Since you're still feeling a bit of the glow from last weekend and you're just bursting with creativity, please apply to build the next PDF Pony. Our next Burn comes in October on Columbus Day weekend, and to be honest, it's always been a struggle to find someone to build the Pony for the fall burn. The fall burn used to be known as the slacker burn, but not any more. Tickets have come close to selling out and we had over 30 theme camps last fall. So if you were thinking of putting off on applying to do the Pony till spring because Fall PDF just doesn't seem so exciting or glamorous, well, THINK AGAIN, please!

Maybe you were thinking we were flooded with applications to build the Pony over the years and you don't stand a chance, well, THINK AGAIN! I've only gotten four applications over the past six burns. On the two occasions we didn't get applications, I had to beg and plead. (THANK YOU Ember and Monk-E)

Maybe you were thinking the organization doesn't spend all that much money or care much about the Pony, well, THINK AGAIN! You can get a grant up to $600, and the Pony is the centerpiece of the Burn. Everyone cares and appreciates a good Pony.

If you have an idea, please fill out the info below and return it to me offlist. Thank you!

PDF PONY EFFIGY APPLICATION

5) Past Experience- Please describe your past experience building burning art. Include location and total grant allocation, if possible.

6) Budget- Please list materials and cost. (Transportation issues will be mentioned later in this form)

7) Schedule- How long will it take you to assemble your piece? Will most of the assembly be done on site, or will you have it constructed before hand? (PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR PIECE MUST BE READY TO BURN NO LATER THAN 9 P.M. SATURDAY NIGHT)

8) Safety plan- How will you keep anyone from getting hurt when your piece burns?

9) Burn plan- How much of a perimeter will you need to burn safely? What kind of accelerants will you use?

10) Transportation plan- How will you get your piece/materials/tools to the site?

11) Tools Required- will you have your own? Will you have to borrow or buy more? PLEASE NOTE THAT PDF ALREADY HAS FIRE RAKES FOR CLEAN UP PURPOSES.

12) Clean up plan- who will be helping you clean up the burn pad?

WickerMan 2009

The second annual WickerMan is almost upon us! WickerMan is the
mid-Atlantic's burn with an Earth Spirited twist. Personal
exploration, inspiration without sanction, possibility without
constraint. It is on the Land that we become a community of
participants, taking action through Art, Fire and Self Expression.
WickerMan is an Altar to the Possible on the Land that Sustains us
all.

Within this ethos are the gifts of our participants- Theme Camps, Art,
Performance and Volunteering. We have a wild and diverse host of
registered Theme Camps and Art this year. Experience everything from
Flaming Tetherball (yes, that is verbatim) to Spanish flaming liquor
rituals and everything in between. You could find yourself leading an
impromptu yoga class or rocking your body in Sound Town, an all night
aural cornucopia of DJs from across the East Coast, matched by our
largest Art Grant ever for deco lighting and decorations.

We started with $6,000 in the Art Grant budget for Artists to fund a
variety of initiatives, from Altars to Performance to Installations.
And we still have a bit left to give out for late proposals, so do
ask! Our Artists are guaranteeing us a visual feast of beautiful
little installations, big in-your-face performances and tokens like
free noodles or a new 'do.

If Volunteering is your cup of tea, there are many fields where your
hands are needed. Consider Ranging to keep WckerMan the litter free
event it was last year, or Greeting your fellow burners as they
arrive. If swinging a hammer is your thing, then there is a place for
you to help build the Man. Set-up Weekend is May 15-17, and that's a
head-on collision with what lies behind the curtain. We've ordered the
lumber and are preparing our designs for building the WickerMan. Come
join the crew to create the biggest effigy east of the Mississippi!
Just the normal $10 a night grounds fees apply, day trips are free.

May 21st-25th is the Burn, he flames on Saturday night, early-in and
late-out is fine by us. Joe Average registration closes May 9th at
$55, Better late than never closes May 19th at $65. And then there is
THE GATE.

The Belly Horror Show is a spooky belly dance variety weekend in Washington, DC - including a one of a kind show on Friday Oct. 23rd, 2009 and weekend workshops with stars from the show! 2009 will be our biggest show ever, incorporating a nationally recognized venue, bigger audiences and incorporating weekend workshops! The show features spooky, macabre, and horror or "B-movie monster" themed performances to delight, frighten, and amaze! Performances should be rooted in traditional or fusion belly dance style but can incorporate other performance arts such as burlesque, side/variety show, dark cabaret, etc. Musical submissions are also encouraged.

Proposals will be accepted until June 1, 2009.

Update on Kaihea's Yardsale

This Saturday from 9-2ish I'll be trying to disseminate lots and lots of Kaihea's possessions back into active duty from the lawn of our house, 13333 Preuit Place in Herndon, just off the toll road. The main goal is to find homes for stuff before I haul whatever doesn't find a home to our local charity thrifts (where they'll wind up in the hands of the kinds of people who would've bought 'em at the yardsale anyway).

It looks like the bulk of the merchandise will be women's clothing. Many of y'all who knew Kaihea from the Playa may not have known that she was raised by a shopaholic mom, so there's a lot of really quality stuff looking for a new home. Some miscellaneous kitchen stuff and general random kibble will also be featured.

I'm whatcha call a Motivated Seller here - as much as it'll break my heart to part with, say, the gorgeous pink summer dress she wore when we danced under the full moon after the winetasting in Warrenton the night before she started chemo, it's leaving with the first person to offer me a few bucks for it, whether it be a dear friend of hers or one of the ladies from the homeless shelter I invited. So if you can't make it on the early side but really want a chance at the loveliest treasures of Kaihea's formidable wardrobe, contact me and maybe we can set something up for Friday night.

Show in honor of Kaihea, this Sunday April 11th...

Friends of Kaihea are honored to announce the 3rd Fire in the Belly. This event started as a benefit to raise money to help a wonderful performer and friend, will continue as a torch to her memory.

Held in honor of Kaihea's birthday the event will feature performance by her many talented friends, with a focus on several styles of belly dance, fire performance and more!

Proceeds donated in part to DCTribal, which she co-founded & to Cancer Charities, to help fund research on the terrible disease that took our beloved Kaihea from us entirely too early.

There will also be a 'yard sale' early upstairs at the Palace where some of her belongings will be for sale....to help keep them 'in the community".

We hope to see you there!

PDF DPW CO CHAIR NEEDED!

Patty is not able to serve as DPW co chair for PDF like she has done so well for so long. Essentially she was working with Naked Ron to make sure PDF was set up and broken down in an orderly manner so as to not tick off our hosts, the Vets, and to maintain our LNT policy. It's a tough job and I can't thank Patty enough for her work in the past. So if you're willing to spend the final hours of PDF working with whatever volunteers we can find to get the place cleaned up, make sure all PDF related gear is stowed away in our shed, make sure all the fires are out, I and all the other folks who attend PDF would be really, really grateful. The work generally occurs Monday afternoon, Memorial Day.

I'm not DPW chair, and I believe there is more to the job than what I've described. I'm just here offering a public service announcement on behalf of all of us PDF types. If you're interested, please contact me off list at jillnado@hotmail.com and I will get you more details.

This is a job that really needs to be filled because the way we leave the VVMC is crucial to whether we'll be allowed back. PLEASE,OH PLEASE VOLUNTEER!

Have you ever wanted to be better at thinking on your feet? This class is a series of improv games designed to make you start thinking faster. There are no winners or losers in these games, it’s not about the wittiest or funniest, it’s all about warming up your brain for a full day of quick thinking. By the end of the class you’ll be on your toes and mentally warmed up, it’s aerobics for your brain!

Showcraft - 20 Minutes in Vaudeville!
12pm - 1pm $30 ($40 @ door)
While there is no shortage of classes on “How To…”, it’s time to take it to the next level! Take those skills you have painstakingly learned, and work them into a great show! This class covers how to build a “bit”, and then how to take the bits and build a set and a show! We will also develop a toolbox of elements to get the most out of your audience, heckler handling techniques, and much much more. All performers welcome, not just bellydancers. If you're a sideshow artist, fire eater, hula hooper, host, emcee, poet, magician or improv comedian, come along and improve your presentation.

In the first 2/3 of the class we will explore the many, many, many different places to do same direction and opposite direction movements (weave and butterfly).

This includes but is not limited to:
Weave Fountain
Buzzsaw Fountain (forward flowers, anti-spun flowers, and the butterfly variants).
1.5's everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE. Yes forward spun, reverse, butterfly, and even behind the head.
Wheel and wall plane flower patterns (anti-spinning).

The last portion will be an introduction to Hybrids. Yes Hybrids. We will break these advance movements to their core, what I like to call the 5 principles of spin.

We will learn how to apply these basic fundamental movements of Poi spinning into Hybrid movements.

Juggling Class - beginner to advanced

Master Juggler Paul “Garbanzo” will advance your juggling skills no matter what level you are. From absolute beginner to advanced club passing Paul will engage each student and make you a better juggler in one hour.(beginner bean bags available for purchase 2$ each, 5$ for set of 3).

Mental Magic with Mr. Eon
5pm - 6pm - $30 ($40 @ door)
Learn the basics of “mentalism,” and tricks to make people think you can read their minds and predict the future! You need only bring yourself (but you might want pencil and paper to help remember some of this cool stuff).

1. Spring PDF Ticket Sales

PDF's Spring 2009 event will take place May 21-25, at the VVMC in Townsend, Delaware.

Tickets cost $35 each when purchased online. Please note that any tickets available for purchase at the event will cost $40 each. Children under the age of 12 are admitted at no charge when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those ages 12-18 must purchase a ticket at full price. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Dogs are not permitted at the event. RVs must pre-register at the time of purchase.

A total of 1,000 tickets will be available, with 500 available in each round.

Round 1 - CLOSED
Round 2 - opens Tuesday, 4/21 at 21:00:00 (nine p.m.)

GATE TICKET SALES:
If any tickets remain unsold after the two rounds online, they will be available for purchase at the gate for $40. These tickets are available on a "first come, first served" basis.

HARDSHIP TICKETS:

A limited number of hardship tickets are available at a reduced cost ($15) to qualifying participants. Hardship ticket applications are available on the website http://www.playadelfuego.org/content/view/76/2/ You can apply until the week before Round 2 tickets go on sale.

2. PDF Planning Committee Report

The PDF Planning Committee has met twice so far in 2009. At the meeting held on January 18th, we set the calendar for 2009 planning meetings and ticket sales, voted to increase the number of hardship tickets available, and discussed several other organizational issues. At the meeting held on March 8th, event budgets were presented for discussion.

The next planning meeting will be held April 4th or 5th and we are looking for a host. At this meeting we will vote on the Spring Event budget. The only requirements is a phone connection (PDF will even provide the conference phone).

Remember that ALL MEMBERS of the PDF community are welcome to participate in planning meetings, in person or by conference call. Even if you can only attend one, we'd love to have your input.

Volunteers Needed! PDF is 100% volunteer run, and it's never to early to think about how you can help. You can sign up online (more information will be coming) or at the event.

A reminder to artists who have applied for Art Grants. Check your
blinded email box! We have comments and questions about several
projects. If you have any problems with your blinded email box
contact the blinder via the same email address you applied with.

4. PDF Board of Directors - What's going on!

The Board has been busy this Winter making sure that PDF has all that it needs to keep on keepin' on! Over the last few months, we have been compiling information for our annual post-retreat report, updating and renewing our insurance coverage, doing the legal/financial paperwork to maintain our non-profit status, and working to expand PDF's involvement in the greater community. In January, we were able to co-sponsor the "Art of Change" inaugural ball in Washington, DC, with Artomatic.

In more mundane news, we have a new Secretary, Joanna Barnum, and a new Treasurer, Maya Cook. Many thanks to Bink and Jamie Love who previously held those positions!

Calling all Burners! We're following up Art of Change by putting on another large-scale event designed to bring a piece of the playa into DC's consciousness.

Join us on April 3rd at Station 9 (1438 U St NW) to reinvent the circus--we'll have fire dancers, magicians, clowns, and many more sideshow performers as well as special performances by Archedream for Humankind and Dance Afire!

Tickets are $10 through March 27th through Ticket Alternative (http://www.ticketalternative.com/Events/4709.aspx) or get it for $15 at the door. This is a burner benefit for Clowns without Borders, so all the ticket proceeds go to a CWB mission to Sudan in May.

Doors open at 9:30. Dress code is Clown Formal ;)

WickerMan brings together Burn Culture, the Art of Giving and Ecological Responsibility in a festival that depends on the Radical Self-Expression of each individual. Based on the tenets of Burning Man of the Black Rock Desert, we actively incorporate their founding principles- Communal Participation, Decommodification, Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-Reliance. In essence, at WickerMan, Radical Self-Expression Meets Radical Earth Spirit.

We convene to celebrate what we as individuals offer to the community, through Art, Gifting and Self-Reliant Participation. Together we commune within the land to build and burn the biggest Man east of the Mississippi River. Individual participation is what makes this event happen, we depend on each other for content and execution. Family & Friends of Kaihea are honored to announce a call for performers for the 3rd Fire in the Belly. The event, held in honor of Kaihea's birthday will raise funds for DCTribal & Cancer Charities, to help fight the terrible disease that took our beloved Kaihea from us entirely too early. Show length and alloted performance times will depend on the measure of response, but we're truly interested in trying to create space for anyone that wishes to donate a performance in honor Kaihea.

Burning Man blips on Global Consciousness Project

I couldn't sleep the other night, so I checked in with the GCP...if you're not familiar with it, you should definitely check it out. It sounds like the name of a bad hippy band (or maybe a decent reggae one), but in fact it's a rigorous and bold experiment that's been going on at Princeton for many years now, measuring...something...something global, and something having to do with human consciousness.

And, evidently, Burning Man.

Short take: random number generators have been shown to respond to focused human consciousness in statistically significant, replicable ways we have no mechanism for explaining just yet. The GCP has been tracking a network of about 60 random number generators all over the world for years, and their results seem to show a effect that takes place when large numbers of homo sapiens, um, kinda sorta get on the same wavelength. Or something.

One of their biggest recorded blips started a few hours BEFORE the first plane hit on 9/11, and lasted throughout the day. Other biggies have coincided with Princess Diana's funeral, New Year's Eve on many years, Obama's and Palin's nomination acceptance speeches, Obama's election, and some large meditation gatherings/events.

So one of their staff hypothesized that Burning Man might yield a blip as well. Sure enough, if I'm reading this correctly, the global network recorded statistically significant blips during the Burning of the Man on several years, with the biggest being '07 (the biggest burn, wasn't it?), but no reported effect for '08 (when the Burn and conclave were drastically scaled back due to bad weather).

Hello everyone,

I wanted to send out a reminder about the Burner Bazaar that we are hosting this weekend at Contradiction Dance Studio in Takoma Park, Md.

As the bazaar comes to an end we are going to open the space up to more socializing, dancing and a low key party. It is looking like we have DJ Ramiro spinning for the first part of the bazaar and I am working on having a second.

Consider dressing up in some playa finery and you might just find something to accentuate your outfit.

In addition to the stuff I mentioned before, I will be demonstrating and selling a portable, rugged rechargeable battery that can power a laptop and be charged by the sun and another smaller one for phones and smaller electronic stuff.

A number of people have signed up for tables and here is an idea of what they are offering:

From MiSalsa - I will be bringing acrylic abstract paintings, some knit and crochet items, some antiques and items from foreign countries, some garage sale type items, some recycled art.

From Bronwen - "I will be bringing tons of fun costume pieces... some handmade and some purchased and altered... ranging from brand new to well loved!

I am planning to work-related travel to Baltimore for a meeting in the
week of Feb 9. Being interested in meeting fellow burners in the
DC-Baltimore area, I have made plans to arrive to the area on Sat. Feb 7.
I have not seen much activity from Burners on tribe.net, and was wondering
if you guys have some other social website that you use to post events and
gatherings? I am interested to know if there are any burner-type events

RAT'S RENTAL BIKES FOR LONG-DISTANCE BURNERS

Our friend Rat, up in Sparks, writes to remind us it's time to rent a
bike for the Burn ... if you're coming from far away, that is. He says:

"If this is the first time you've heard of me, I've been providing
bikes for long-distance Burners for over a dozen years. I live in
Sparks, next door to Reno, just a block or so from the main route to
Burning Man, I-80, with easy off and on.

As usual, I'm primarily trying to get bikes into the hands of people
who travel a long way to attend the Burn -- at least 1,000 miles from
Reno.
{Canada excepted}.

This year I have more bikes than usual, so I don't expect to run out
so fast, but please don't wait too long to reserve yours!

DC Meet and Greet/Party - Feb 21st

We have a pretty big house and have had some pretty big parties, but room is limited, so please ask before forwarding this to any other lists or social networking site.

I and my housemates are going to have another meet and greet on February 21st. However, as the lure of a low-key social mixer seemed to be, well low, this is going to be more party oriented.

It will start at 8pm and go until everyone leaves or is asleep. There is floor space to crash if you plan on being awake late enough. Bring the appropriate air mattress/sleeping bags etc.

We have a brick patio out back for fire spinning if the weather happens to be decent or the fire spinners are sufficiently dedicated. There will be snacks and beer, but please bring more if possible.

Things we need -
As of now there is no theme. I will take any suggestions anyone might have under advisement.
We also have no real sound system. Our neighbors are pretty forgiving, so we can probably get away with some music for dancing if anyone would like to help out.

we want to give an extra thanks to everyone who was there, everyone who were safeties, and performers. fire and dj's. it was Tina and my first time to ever actually put ourselves into the burner community. everyone was awesome and helpful. We couldnt have had a better birthday.
