You guys are are amazing - I love that you draw so heavily on contemporary dance forms. It all blends so seamlessly - I am a fan for life! And I could keep going on and on, but I don't want to completely weird you out :) But I'll keep my fingers crossed that I get a chance to take a workshop from you or see you perform live one of these days.

The Rodeo Vision including DCDT

The Rodeo Vision

I grew up on a cattle ranch, Angus to be specific. 40acres, 3 ponds, herd of cattle, 2 dogs, 4 cats, rounds of rattlesnake, 1 pig, 4 motorcycles, 1 boat, 3 pickup trucks and 4 horses.

Biscuit. The 15 hand tall brown Quarter Horse. I was 7 years old when my Dad convinced my mother to purchase a mother-daughter Horse combo that were for sale close to the ranch. Flying Star Ranch…my memories are coming back, I forgot that part. My mother worked full time and my Dad was a pilot so he was away on planes for most of my life. Minus a few years when he was laid off and played janitor at my school (my favorite years.) So Biscuit, the daughter of the team at 6 months old, and I had 40 acres and absolutely no chaperone from 7 to 16 years old when I left home. Let the ruckus begin…

She bit me, kicked me, ran me thru fences, into trees, stepped on me and tried to drown me in the pond on a daily basis. After years of abuse she was my best friend and I don’t blame her, we grew up together. These memories are some of the most fulfilling golden nuggets still left bouncing around in my mind. One more story before I get to business.

Biscuit was dark brown and pretty much invisible at night except for the white diamond on her forehead…I almost typed foreheart…awwwww. So school was about a 45 minute drive from the ranch, in “town”, and it got dark early in the winter. By the time I got home from school and then basketball practice, it was late and dark most everyday. I would park my truck at the house and then take my motorcycle down the hill to feed the animals. Here’s where Biscuit comes in. I parked the motorcycle around the corner of the barn and would walk to the hay barn. As soon a I opened the hay door, I would hear it. Biscuit, who I hardly thought was starving after grazing 40 acres on her own free will, would run to the barn. I mean run. I would hear the hooves, but I couldn’t see her. Remember? Dark brown, dark dark brown. She would get closer and closer and the sound of her pounding hooves and heaving breath was incredibly intimidating. She was huge! And I would stand by the door cowering. Just waiting for her to plow right thru me. But she never did. She would stop just in front me, just in front of me. Nostrils flared, ears back and eyes wide open. Wild and completely in control.

This my friends was the inspiration.

The Rodeo Summary

Spend the day on the Ranch! This is a one-time only epic event hosted by UNMATA and Brad Dosland of Taboo Media. Powered by Hot Pot Studios and supported by countless guest artists and die hard fans.

The venue! The Rodeo will be located at Long Branch Ranch, a ghost town recreation complete with small town, mercantile, saloon and a ton more I cant remember. It’s amazing. I mean really. For serious people… it’s perfect.

The event opens at 11am on Saturday August 8th, 2009. Please arrive between 11am and 1pm. Lunch begins at 1pm with outdoor dining and entertainment. From 2-4pm you have the run of the ranch! Game stations, western dance lessons, whip lessons and surprise entertainment will be scattered throughout the town. Bring some extra cash for horseback riding too. At 420pm the stables will open. You will have the opportunity to walk thru and watch the handlers prepare the human horses for the Rodeo. The stables will be open from 420 to 5pm, At 6pm meet at the coral for the Rodeo showcase. The Rodeo showcase will run for one hour from 6-7pm. This showcase includes dance performances by UNMATA, Verbatim, Street Team, Hot Pot Studio and Suhaila Salimpour. Dinner starts at 730pm with outdoor dining and entertainment. 9pm the Saloon opens! All night drinking, gambling and general mayhem! Roulette wheels too! 1030pm the Evening show will begin in the Town Hall across from the Saloon. Featuring Dahlia, Kami Liddle, The Old Ladies, Origin Tribal, The Boiler Bar, Janice Solimeno, Kristen Dosland and The Indigo! Then back to the Saloon to finish out the evening with surprise entertainment and more drinking and gambling! The evening runs until 2am and then we gotta go! Um……..

Ladies, you came all the way to France : this is the first thing I wanted to thank you for, you honoured us with your presence.
Being so easy to stay with is the second thing I wanted to thank you for.
You offered us a wonderfull poetic DANCE performance and that's the third point.
You support us with opening our imagination and creativity during the workshop (I won't forget the ball trick) and that's the last point in my mind by the way.
I'm glad you loved Paris. I hope you'll go back home safely and with nice souvenirs in your mind.
Looking forward to seeing you again at TF9 together with Naala, Tjarda and all the girls to have fun again and DANCE, DANCE, DANCE....TRIBAL!

A "retreat" into the heart of the San Francisco Tribal Fusion Bellydance scene, aesthetic, music, dance, and culture.
This is not a festival per se, it's an intensive. Or immersion rather.. where you'll get individualized attention and shared group experience deepening over the course of 3- or 5 days droppin into the dance together! Come immerse yourself in the culture, the music, the bay area bohemian bellydance underworld that is shaping the tribal fusion explosion world wide. Experience where it all began. Learn from some of the pioneers in the field, meet the musicians too, who are shaping the culture and dance! , Dive in, and see how it inspires YOU! In addition to lots of technique and dance training, there are special workshops/lectures on context, history, evolution of tribal fusion bellydance, Core Yoga specifically for dancers, hang out at our local hot spots, workshops on costuming, aesthetic, creating true fusion choreography, and developing your own style, panel discussions on the collaboration between dancers and musicians, with some of your favorite musicians and dancers shaping the art form, lots of performances, and yes, even vending! by some of the bay area's hottest designers...

Our warm up will focus on layered isolations including syncopated body rhythms, layering two and three dimensional movements simultaneously, and traveling shimmy layers. This Saturday, ShoeBox Studios is hosting a Dance-A-Thon benefit for the studio & CARE.org.

Here's the deal:
Kick off the new year by dancing, sweating, and shaking it for a great cause! ShoeBox Studio is hosting it's first ever Dance-A-Thon! On January 12th, from 10AM-8PM, every ShoeBox class will be offered in a 30-45 minute sample format. Classes will run back to back as a "marathon".

Dancers who would like to dance but not collect pledges may still participate by simply making a $12-20 sliding scale donation at the door.

Who is Penelope? DCDT at Cowell Theater...

Penelope - Dorothy Parker

In the pathway of the sun,
In the footsteps of the breeze,
Where the world and sky are one,
He shall ride the silver seas,
He shall cut the glittering wave.
I shall sit at home, and rock;
Rise, to heed a neighbor’s knock;
Brew my tea, and snip my thread;
Bleach the linen for my bed.

They will call him brave.

This piece is based on Homer's Penelope; the wife of Odysseus who spent all day weaving at her loom, and all night undoing her days work. She did and undid herself to avoid making a decision, a personal stand. She was trapped in the act of doing and undoing, to avoid, simply, stating.
Penelope's Web has become a proverbial expression denoting anything which is perpetually doing but never done.
I became interested in the idea of Penelope herself. Where is she in the story? Did she delay the taking of a suitor not because she wished to remain loyal to her husband, as the story suggests, but perhaps, for a reason known only to herself? Did she have a lover already? Did she hold her vows as sacred beyond death? Did she desperately want a suitor, and feel tormented by guilt for her perceived betrayal? Was she trapped toiling between expectation and desire?
I became interested in the idea of weaving and unweaving, in the idea of a loom - and of looming; decisions, impositions, expectations - of tying and untying. What holds us together? What, in our own lives, do we spend our days constructing only to tear down to threads when the lights go out?
Penelope is a metaphor as marriage is a metaphor and weaving is a metaphor. What do you tie together? What do you take apart? When do you realize that you are caught, and how then, do you decide to untangle? This is a collection of questions, of koans. What is the sound of one woman weaving? And how does that sound unravel?

Fusion Bellydance with Gibson Pearl explores the rhythm, isolations, and nuances of Tribal Fusion bellydance. Every class starts with a warm-up session of stretching and conditioning, followed by drills and breakdowns of moves and transitions. last night charlotte of DCDT and i performed at Dalloua Dance co's quarterly showcase at the Java Cafe in sacramento.
it was especially exciting for me, because it was the first time i've ever had someone choreograph something to music i've written, and it was the first time i've played music on stage *for* a dancer. we had a great time!

Some Rule and Hints for Students and Teachers
by John Cage

Rule 1: Find a place you trust and then, try trusting it for a while.

Rule 2: (General Duties as a Student)
Pull everything out of your teacher.
Pull everything out of your fellow students.

Rule 3: (General Duties as a Teacher)
Pull everything out of your students.

Rule 4: Consider everything an experiment.

Rule 5: Be self-disciplined. This means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way.

Rule 6: Follow the leader. NOTHING IS A MISTAKE. There is no win and no fail. There is only make.

Rule 7: The only rule is work. If you work it will lead to something. It is the people who do all of the work all the time who eventually catch onto things. You can fool the fans--but not the players.

Rule 8: Do not try to create and analyze at the same time. They are different processes.

Rule 9: Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It is lighter than you think.

Rule 10: We are breaking all the rules, even our own rules, and how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for "x" qualities.

Helpful Hints:

Always be around.
Come or go to everything.
Always go to classes.
Read everything you can get your hands on.
Look at movies carefully and often.
Save everything. It may come in handy later.
