Re: FINALLY...where you been, anyone else there?
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 9:00 AMThis was about 1 year late...but better now than later. Me, I am trying to figure out how this WHOLE design school LIFE is about. I HAD a regular job last year and that was gone within a few weeks of 18 hours of class at UTA (arlington). I was told design school was time consuming and expensive, but last year was ridiculous to the point of going completely broke....supplies for models, supplies for drawings, supplies for "Fill in the friggin' blank". To say the least I would like ANYone who has been through this, albeit registered architects, design students higher up, or really anyone to help me through this. MOST IMPORTANT !!! --> surely I am not the only one who felt tired, broke, and humiliated from last year...HELP!!! -

Tue, July 5, 2005 - 1:37 AMOuch what a horrible year you had. Hopefully you can help me and maybe a few shy others who could possible be here on telling us some do's & don'ts and other such things. You have been through a year of this crazed madness you have faced. Even though I will most likely deal with it myself, I would still like to know what will happen while learning this profession.

Wed, November 15, 2006 - 10:16 PMNo, you're far from alone, Sean. I wish I could tell you it gets better, but it doesn't. Much of design school is just about survival. I swear that I think that half of it is simply an endurance match.
And speaking of the time involvement, I've got to go get back to work on my own project. Final crits are coming up *way* too quickly, as usual.

Sat, November 18, 2006 - 9:40 AMSory to say that you are right on with the money stuff. I have spent several hundred dollars for each design class on top of books and resistration -

Sun, December 17, 2006 - 11:05 PMHolly,
If you got off with only "several hundred dollars" for each class, then you got off light. I've had semesters in which I've easily spent $1,000 just on supplies for my studio. I learned to just plan on spending that much each semester, and to be happy if it *didn't* cost me that much. Now, my major expenses are for printing large-scale CAD output, and whenever I freak out at that expense, I just remind myself that it's just part of the cost of supplies, and at least I don't have to also buy a big stack of books like I did in other academic pursuits on top of it.

I don't get where you think I got off light....
I spent on average $5,000 in tuition + 1,000 in books + $500-$600 per class x 5classes for each semester that adds up to $8,000+ per semester and that doesn't include things like printing, parking, eating etc. -

When you said it cost you a couple hundred dollars per class just for supplies. That's really not bad; I've had semesters where my studio has cost me upwards of $1,000 in supplies, printing, etc. - for *one* class.
I wasn't even addressing tuition, just supplies.
Why did you have such a high book expense in design school? Other than a couple of readers in a few classes, which I don't think ever exceeded $40 each at the outside, I don't think I *had* to purchase any books at all while I was in school, certainly none that were *required* - well, OK, *one*. I did buy quite a few, but they were all purchased entirely by choice, not as textbooks or class requirements.
