Local Bellydance students are fundraising for Y-ME!

dcwalk.y-me.org/site/PageServer

Out of the "Clubs and Organizations" our team, Bellies for Breasts, is in a *very* close second. All we need is a little help to catch up, and we're sure to come out first in our category!! :)

Our team of six belly dance students has really worked hard to raise money for Y-ME. And while it's fun perform for the walk participants and to engage in a little friendly competition as we read about how the other teams are doing, we know that there are women, their families, and their friends who face the reality of breast cancer every day. As dancers, we are so fortunate to have our health and to be able to share the joy of Middle Eastern music and dance. So fundraising for Y-ME is fun for us, but we take it seriously, and we couldn't do it without your support.

We are also so grateful for our dance teachers who make it possible for us to spread the love and joy of belly dance on Mother's Day.

And if you're so inclined, you can go here to donate main.y-me.org/goto/Rajni; if you want to donate to the team in general, there's a link to that there as well. :)

Thanks everyone!

this is sad - I was going down Fall Hill ave. Tuesday around 5pm & a whole herd of deer were trying to cross at the top of the hill. There was tons of traffic, they turned around & went up by the apts. there. I often see deer on that road, but this was like 6 -8 of them.

And more Bellydance in the 'burg

Due to unfortunate circumstances (my parents had to attend a memorial service) we stayed in town. But lucky us, we caught Adara's show! She was radiant in her red and gold costume; Mark even had to voice his appreciation of her costume. Adara's dance is beautiful and welcoming-- she really connects with an audience and makes the dance accessible. Watching her dance makes you want to dance!

Bellydance in the 'burg

Two great belly dance shows in the ‘burg in one night… who would’ve thought?

Mark and I originally thought that we’d have to skip the shows last night, since we were planning to go out of town. But, we decided to delay for a night.

First we saw Kostana perform at Nader’s Middle Easter Café. As always, she was lovely and energetic, wearing a beautiful black and red costume. It was good to see every table filled at Nader’s. They have delicious food and, to me and Mark, the best hookahs in town.

Next we saw Kawakib at Aladin’s. Aladin’s had good hummus and was packed for the show. Watching Kawakib dance is part entertainment, part education. She performed to some songs that we have used in class, but watching her add her Egyptian-style magic always gives me inspiration and insight into how the dance is meant to be. Yep, this is why she’s a pro! The little nuances, her relaxed but elegant delivery… in the words of Bill and Ted, “I’m not worthy!” :) She had to deal with some technical problems with the sound system, and some zealous “stage hogs” (OK, I was miffed that she seemed to have to hold back with the cane routine so as not to hit the people who just got up and joined her. She was very gracious, but watching Kawakib perform Raks Assaya is a treat and I wanted the interlopers to sit down!).

BTW, Mark’s appreciation for the nuances of the dance continues to grow. Last night he remarked, “I like the way Kawakib looks at her hips when she does a hip move. It helps the audience focus on the move she is doing.” :) Yep, he’s officially a belly dance connoisseur! Or at least he knows good dance when he sees it.

Thanks, Kostana and Kawakib, for bringing your talents to the ‘burg.

Tonight, it’s Adara Janaani at Nader’s. Check it out!

Greetings to the list! I've now lived in Fredericksburg for almost a year, and I still haven't been able to get plugged into the babysitter pool. I'm looking for an occassional babysitter for my four year old son. In particular, I'm looking for a babysitter for the 13th of July during the evening. Can anyone help me out? Also, if you're a mom who already has a babysitter list, could you pass a name or two on to me? I promise not to steal any babysitters away! :) Your help is greatly appreciated! Please contact me at oag4@earthlink.net or at 808-781-4433. Thanks to all! ~Chi

B4B Hafla at a local restaurant

B4B Hafla at Nader's (Rt 3 West in F'burg, Va)!
Local Fredericksburg belly dancers are taking part in the Y-ME Walk to Empower on Mother’s Day (YOU can walk with us too!). It’s a 3 mile non-competitive walk, with no fund-raising minimum. Go to www.y-me.org for more details. Our team is Bellies for Breasts and we’re part of the DC walk. Email me personally if you have any trouble navigating the site.

So, here’s the belly dancing part! Nader has graciously offered to host a fund-raising Hafla at his restaurant. We’re planning on May 6th at 6PM. He is being nice enough to open on a Sunday and he’s donating a portion of the profits to the B4B walk team, so I’d be thrilled to see a great turn-out. I’ll have flyers soon. There will be door prizes and raffles. If you’re interested in donating a raffle or silent auction prize, please email me! It doesn’t have to strictly belly dance related.

We plan on having open dancing and drumming. If you’re interested in performing a number, let me know. I want this to be a fun event for our belly dance community and maybe it will grow into a tradition!

We are also selling beautiful pink ribbon Austrian crystal pins and charm bracelets, donated by Adara Janaani (www.adaradance.com/). Pins are $10 and bracelets are $25; I’ll have them before and after local classes, plus at the hafla. Email me for more info.

Thanks, and PLEASE tell and bring your friends and family!!
Y-Me Mother's Day Walk in Northern VA

Dance, drum and support a great cause
On Mother's Day local Fredericksburg bellydancers and drummers will be participating in the Walk to Empower, organized by Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, with our team B4B. B4B has its own tribe too!

Come join the team of Belly Dancers, Drummers, Friends and Family as we support a great cause and have a great time! No, you don't have to be a belly dancer to join us, but you might be one by the end of the day!

There is no registration fee, but Y-ME recommends that every walker set a goal to raise $100 or more. You can still walk with us even if you don't raise funds.

To make sure that our team looks sharp on Walk Day, we are planning a great new t-shirt design courtesy of Yaalini and Josephine. More details to come soon, but we'll probably order from Custom Ink again.

Once you've signed up as a member of our team, you can access your own personal Y-ME Walk Center, where you can create a personalized Web page, and accept credit card donations in support of your efforts. Our team has set a goal of raising $2000 and it is through your participation, and the support of our friends, colleagues and family that we will be successful. On behalf of Y-ME and Bellies for Breasts, thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14th.

If you can't make it to the Walk, please support our team by making a donation at my team's Web page, accessible by visiting the link below. Please let us know if we can walk in honor or memory of someone you know. You will be with us in spirit!

We are getting ready to move to Fredericksburg and I am hoping to connect with some other mommies in the area. I found a cool group out here on the penninsula but have yet to find a group in the new area. If anyone is interested I started a tribe:
Washington & Rochambeau 225th March to Victory
Eileen’s At the Chimneys Presents: “225th Washington &Rochambeau March to Victory” Saturday September 23, 2006 August 14th 1781 “Matters having now come to a crisis”. Those were the words General Washington used to sum up the situation upon learning that Admiral Comte de Grasse and the French Fleet were headed for the Chesapeake. Faced with the unconceivable challenge of force marching the “tattered” Continental Army a distance of over 400 miles, Washington quickly readied the allied armies in what some historians would characterize as the most greatest military operation of it’s time. Come out and celebrate the reenactment of General Washington’s September 1781 arrival in Fredericksburg as he leads the French and American Armies to Yorktown Virginia. General George Washington and General George Weedon will be on site to discuss with the public the military situation in Virginia and the Armies march south to Yorktown. Bring the family and see history come alive at The Chimneys!
