I'm new to this tribe but am curious about the group...

Is anyone in San Francisco/ San Jose California? We are carpooling to The Rosa Lee Show tomorrow and I'd love to meet others in our area.

Have a great weekend!

Hi, a retired teacher, I recently moved to Oregon from Montana. I've been totally deaf for almost a decade, gradually losing hearing for 15 years prior to that, so I've studied speechreading a while and do a fair job. Ha ha ha, that's 75-85% understanding AFTER getting to know the talker. My sister in California has been deaf since birth, so I'm better at undertanding if the speaker uses ASL.

I'm currently writing a novel with a deaf protagonist. Any other writers here?

If there's a deaf community here in Albany, I haven't yet found where they're hiding.

Hi there,
I'm new to this tribe and to the city as well. I am a hearing person looking for friends who might be kind enough to help me strengthen my ASL skills. Just getting together in social settings or maybe suggestions as to where in the city I might be able to receive instruction at a reasonable cost. I am fluent in Cued Speech/Language although I meet very few Cuers and feel a little timid bringing it up not being deaf myself. Don't want to get political about language matters, just want to meet lovely people, share and learn.
Thanks so much!!

Baratanatyam

Hello,

It is Ludmilla again.

I dance and several years ago one of my dance teachers introduced me to Baratanatyam dance of South India.

One of the main elements of the dance are Asamyutta Hastas–which are single handed mudras and Samyutta Hastas–which are gestures that use both hands.

I was really delighted to realize how my study of these hand gestures help me to remember ASL signs. The 'open' handshape in ASL is the same as the BN 'pataka'. The letter 'y' is the same as mirgashirsha. Hamsapaksha = to 'bent'. Kapittha is the same as 'modified x'. Kartari-mukha is very similar to the asl letter 'k.' There are many other similarities but I'm only listing a few here.

I recently checked out a video which included deaf Japanese performers doing some of the Baratanatyam foot/floorwork.

Have any of you studied this dance form/

Kindly,
Ludmilla

Dear Deaf Probe members,

Hello. My name is Ludmilla and I joined your tribe last week.
I am hearing and have been wanting to study ASL for ten years.
I enrolled in an ASL class early September.
I am curious about many things.
One thing is addressed to any of you who might have children or babysit.
I'm interested in learning if there is a tradition of bedtime stories and if so if
you can talk about that.
Thank you very kindly,
Ludmilla

Hello, got a deaf friend/fellow tenant of my bldg, seeking deaf housing;

Ronald Decker, deaf, and in need of new studio apt. housing. Rent has to be limited to no more than $500 or less, in Los Angeles, and near "Los Angeles City College" (LACC) as he is a medical student there. He is on a limited and fixed income, and would like to be living in a bldg with other deaf tenant's, possibly potential friend's, while doing his own thing and attending school. Please be direct, sweet and to the point in contacting him, please, he is a nice guy, and Ron may be reached at the (following) 3 email address's : dreamyamerica@tmail.com, RONALDDECKER@comcast.net, and dreamyamerica@yahoo.com. He also has Yahoo Messenger as well you can chat with him; I'd think his Yahoo Messenger (name) would be dreamyamerica, not for sure though. Also, his IP address, for video phone : 24.126.15.100, or 70.119.50.76, video phone # : 8086215247. I hope someone who is deaf, or not, basically knows of Los Angeles Deaf Affordable Housing Ron could benefit from. God bless in advance.
