I'm hoping y'all are in to this idea. I have been so encouraged by de Lint's writing, that I copy some passages in to a notebook- so 100 years ago, I know, but there's something to the act of writing I think. What are some of the things you would write down to remember? Here are a couple of mine...
...from Wild Wood- ..."muddy marshland and birdsong and the chorusing frogs holding parliament down by shore."
...."the only limitations we have are the ones we make for ourselves."
...from Tapping the Dream Tree..."There was a time, long ago, when speaking was a ceremony."
.. "live large and walk in Beauty."
Just some of my faves so far and I wish I had done this earlier as I would have a treasure trove of deLintisms. :) I look forward to reading your posts on this one.

K ~ I'm so happy to see this subject. I sweat that I read something along the following lines in a DeLint book years ago: "There is magic at the edges." I love the thought and the sentiment. However, I've looked to find the words since then and cannot. Does anyone here recognize the quote? Any idea where it can be found?

Thought I'd add another quote I read before hitting the sack last night- big Friday night for this grad student. :)
In Tapping the DReam Tree-Forest of Stone story...
"It's because now you're paying attention," he said. "Doing it like you mean it. You'd be surprised how much satisfaction you can get from the simplest task if you impart it with meaning."

Such delicious stuff, I swear it's like medicine!

      from _someplace to be flying_
      moth speaking to hank
"When we understand each other's stories, we understand everything a little better- even ourselves."

another one from -someplace to be flying-
        Annie to Rory
"What can i say? It's getting late, the stars are out. Once the sun sets I tend to embrace whatever wild spirits are running around in the darkness, talking away to each other. I leave the logic of streets and pavement and cars and tall buildings behind and buy into the old magics that they're whispering about. Sometimes those little mysteries and bits of wisdom stick to the bones of my head and i carry them right out into the sunlight again. They're like Jack's stories, true and not true, all at the same time. They don't exactly shape my life, but they certainly color it."

        hear hear!!

            one last one from "STBF"

            Margaret to Cody
"maybe that's what Raven figures it's all about Cody. Keeping the Grace in this world. Maybe her light's not as strong as it once was, maybe the world's gotten darker since the first day, and it's still getting darker, but something's shining on. In you. In me. Everywhere you look, if you take the time to pay attention. So we've got two choices. We can let the darkness win, or we can celebrate the Grace and shine her light stronger."

good one. remnds me of somethnig anam thubten tulku said, too.....
"the universe is not made out of particles, but made out of lots of small stories".

the thing i really like about delint - other than his great stories - is that while reading his books my entire days - are permeated by heigtened experience - my own creativity, appreciation of synchronicity, etc. seem to get a nice lift - some authors can do this - but certainly not most. this is a wonderful gift, and i am grateful that he shares it.

        :o)

I've got another one to share from Moonlight and Vines. From "Shining Nowhere but in the Dark"... 'Weird is good', Bones said. 'Means you're not locked into what's here and now, but you're seeing a little further than most people do.'"

If there is no magic there is no meaning. Without magic or call it wonder, mystery, natural wisdom nothing has any depth. It's all just surface.

Hope is what allows the strong to rise above their despair. It's what makes them strong. Not blind faith, not the certain knowledge that someone will step in tohelp them, but the understanding that through their own force of will they cannot merely survive, but suceed. Hope is what tempers that will and gives it strength to carry on, no mater what the oddsare ranked against them.
Charles DeLint, from the short story Bridges

Remember what I told you about this place when you first found me ?
Ash nodded, That its the Spirit world thats crazy, not the people in it.
Just so. But it can make you crazy. Thats the trap. It tries to remake you to be like it is ,
rather than what you are. You have to be strong.

Greetings, noob to the tribe here. (And in case anyone was wondering, I've been using this particular handle on all sorts of boards for many years...)

I'm reading Widdershins right now, as usual loving every bit of it!
I read this passage last evening and it literally left me belly laughing...
Page 100. Geordie & Jilly riding in the car and talking about the various Romantic aspects of different animals...Chipmunks become the momentary topic as does Robert Burns...

"Geordie put on a thick Scots accent and began to recite:

"Och, wee chipmoosie, ye dinnae hae sae lang. The warld it is a fierce auld place, and...and..."

OK, maybe you have to have Scottish grandparents like I did, but that short line just cracked me up big-time. :-)

Hi, I'm new to this tribe. Started reading De Lint this year. Excellent! Wonderful! A favorite quote, from Seven Wild Sisters

"it's dangerous for humans to be with fairies. It wakes things in you that can't be satisfied, leaving you with a hunger that lasts until the end of your days."

I went to Scotland and saw magical things.....I sort of feel that way about Scotland.....

Anybody else read Seven Wild Sisters or Medicine Road? I loved them.
