Sooooo, what's everyone reading? I have just begun the Harp of the Grey Rosee 1985 of the Cerin Songweaver Series....it's wonderful good. How many of de Lint's books have people in this tribe read. Has ANYONE read every story?

I'm about 100 pages into Svaha, from 1989. VERY different from everything else of his I've read. From the cover: "His Classic Novel of Indian Magic in a High-Tech Future". Part SF, part detective story, hard to describe otherwise. I'm enjoying it, but not as much as any of the Newford novels or short stories.

Of course I haven't read everyting by CDL, but I'm working on it! :-)

Svaha is one of his best tales. I have it on my top ten list of greatest ever!

Well, the ending to Svaha was a little bit too "neat & tidy, happily ever after" for my taste, but that's only my opinion. It still has a lot going for it, a real page-turner that I didn't want to put down. I read it in three sittings, which is pretty fast for me.

I think that's one of the reasons I like his Newford books/short stories better. Those tales rarely end up without some unanswered questions and/or loose ends. Since I know he'll likely come back to the people in question in a later tale, those stories just leave me wanting more!

I just finished the Grey Rose, I enjoy the tales of old as much as I enjoy his modern faerie tales. I always wonder if I am pronouncing the names of people, creaures and places the way they are supposed to be pronounced. I bet if a bunch of people got together and said some of these words there would be quite the variety of pronounciations.....;-)

I'm fairly new to Charles de Lint, Lyra turned me on to him, via her profile. He's really good at "taking me there". Sometimes it's pretty freakin scary stuff. Would not REALLY want to go to some of these places. I think I just want to see a little flying faerie, if only once, if only for a moment, long enough to commit to memory and live off that memory for the rest of my days. I keep lookin' out of the corner of my eye, maybe I will, just maybe.....

I'm going to read The Little Country (1991) next.

Does everyone collect his books or get them from the library? Do you keep track to see if you're reading them all? I am collecting and keeping track.

I collect them when I can find them, it is harder to get some of them as a lot of book stores only tend to have a couple of the more well known ones. But Amazon and what not will get you what you need. I try to go to the used book stores more often though.

yeah i know, i always always peruse the DeLint sectoion of any bookstore i'm in and it always seems to be the same 6 books all the time. Too bad becasue theres a lot of em i want to read but just don't ever see.
I loved harper of theGray Rose too. At first i thought it was just a big rip off of Lord of the Rings, but then halfway through it got really good. It seems that it's like that a lot with DeLint's books, the first half is usually not so engaging in and of itself, but when you hit that magic spot about halfway through the book you start realizing you're turning the pages with eager anticipation. it's great! so many of this books are like a good ride..

My local B&N has stocked a decent variety of DeLint over the past few years, but probably only 4-8 titles at a time. I'm glad they have even stocked that many, otherwise it wouldn't have been likely for me to discover him. I'm also really glad that whichever publisher (too lazy to check which one) decided to re-issue so many of his books. As for titles I can't find locally, online book shopping is a wonderful thing!

I've had some pretty good luck on ebay, saving quite a bit of money and have found a few really rare books that were selling on abe books and amazon for LOTS of money, I paid $35. for over $200 worth of rare de Lint. Did you know that Seven Wild Sisters can get over $150 for a library copy??! Only 3500 printed, never reprinted and they are signed by de Lint and Vess. I kept one from the library for so long that they made me pay for $36. for it if I wanted to check out more books. So.....I did....

as an aside... its been a long time since i have read...well uh anything really. school has just been a pain. so i was hoping to start up with deLint. didnt know where a good place would be to start. esp since he has soooo many books. has anyone ever tried reading from the beginning of his career to the present? or better yet, has anyone put into cronological order the crowsea books?

This is a tough one, that causes many a debate. But we have talked about order quite a few times. I say start with the short stories. They will give you an over view of the city and itsa many inhabitants, then hop into the longer novels. another thing is to pick up some of his chap books, they are harder to get a hold of and cost a bit more but its is a great way to kinda follow a progression of his work from the earlier to today.

I desired to read them from the beginning of his career, but of course couldn't find the Oak King's Daughter ANYWHERE. Then I found out its in the Triskell tales, so I have ended up jumping all over the place.
Going to try to start with the first Newford book and go through them in the order written, just won it on ebay.
You are so right, there are soooo many to choose from...

This is From Charles de Lint's website: www.charlesdelint.com

      Order of Newford Books

Where do I start reading the Newford stories?

The books have all been written in such a way that you should be able to pick up any one and get a full and complete story. However, characters do reoccur, off center stage as it were, and their stories do follow a sequence. The best place to start is the collection "Dreams Underfoot". From there they go pretty much in this order:

      The Dreaming Place
A Whisper To A Scream (originally credited to "Samuel M. Key")
I'll Be Watching You (originally credited to "Samuel M. Key")
      Memory And Dream
      The Ivory And The Horn
      Trader
      Someplace To Be Flying
      Moonlight And Vines
      Forests Of The Heart
      The Onion Girl
Seven Wild Sisters (also available in Tapping the Dream Tree)
      Tapping the Dream Tree
      Spirits in the Wires
      Medicine Road
      The Blue Girl
      Widdershins

"The Dreaming Place" and "The Blue Girl" are YA novels. "A Whisper To A Scream" and "I'll Be Watching You" are, respectively, a horror novel and a thriller; they're darker fare than the other Newford books and aren't really that integral to the underlying, ongoing backstory that takes place off center stage in so many of the books and stories. --

      Peace,
      Windhawk

I am currently reading Lilith by George McDonald. One of the classics of fantasy literature. I recommend his work to those who have not experienced it.

Neil Gaiman is fantastic! I have yet to read anything of his I wasn't really psyched about.

George McDonald, don't know his work, thanks for the tip, I'll give him a shot. :-)

My fav of Fantasy writers from way back is Lord Dunsany. "The King of Elfland's Daughter" is a must read so far as I'm concerned.

I am really appreciating all of these authors everyone is mentioning, I haven't read any of them, but I WILL!

I am on a mission to read every de Lint story ever written.....there's sooo many!!

Just finished The Little Country. It was goood. Scary! Magickal! Set in Cornwall, somewhere I want to visit for sure!

Am reading the Jack of Kinrowan/Drink up the Moon book now. I love it. Anyone else read these?

I am a collector, sometimes it's almost a sickness.....awhile back it was pendants with stones and gems (amber, jasper, quartz, etc, oh! I don't have that one, I better bid on it....) that I would win at auction on ebay. NOW it's Charles De Lint's books.....just won the Triskell Tales and Triskell 2, hardbound, signed, pretty good price. That's cool cuz I want to read his first stories. Also won a couple of chap books that I shall keep as treasures.

Happy reading to you all, it's a great way to get away, huh?

I just finished Little Country too. Not my absolute favorite so far because it made me feel anxious the whole time and its not a good time in my life for that...oh well...onward.

Jack of Kinrowan was a really cool story. It involked a really strange dream for me in that it was extremely reoccurring, three nights of the same dream, over and over and over all those nights long. Stopped when I finished the book so I slept solid last night. I learned a lot about Faerie from that book.

I am going to read the Triskell tales, started the book last night. Love the Cerin tales, and from now on I am going to blame everything on My Ainsel!

Some of the best Faery Tales I've ever read.

I'm really enjoying Wolf Moon right now.
(i started Little Country, but I needed something smaller so I could carry it around right now. Hahaha!)

I'm at the beginning, and I love the way he describes the thoughts of the characters.

                            ^-^

Little Country has some freaky, scary characters.....

Just finished Greenmantle, the faerie tale parts of it are lovely, I still have trouble with violence in any form but I "somehow" handle it if I can find some sweet sugar coated enchanting faerie in it.

yeah greenmantle is INTENSE! i started reading the first chapter and literally had to check the front cover to make sure i was reading the right book.
i ended up really liking it , though it's not one of my favorites of his.
i'll have to check into the Little Country
