It was very fun! Not quite as intense as I usually get from reading de Lint, but very pleased all the time. I'm surprised that I actually guessed correctly on the ending! I don't normally do that.. So that's I think why it wasn't quite as intense toward the end. Usually it's one of those times where you're like "What the HELL is going to happen next?!" but this one for me was "Ooh, I bet they're gonna..." but it was still a really fun ride. I'm glad I finally finished it! I took a few months break from reading cuz I couldn't find my eBook charger, but I found it during the packing and I'm back in the full swing of it. Some place to be flying is next!

Has anyone else read this?

I have to say that though I feel a bit enlightened by a certain part of this book, it also saddens me quite a bit. It talks about how humans would much sooner believe in evil than they would in good, and that's why Seelie is dwindling while unseelie is growing and thriving... and that the unseelie feeds on our fears, negative energy, etc... then talks about how (in the book) because of this the seelie hide on Samhain from the unseelie because they're just too powerful for them to fight off.

I've been thinking about this for several days now, and a couple days ago we headed to Target to get some plastic bins, and I said "Ooh! let's check out the halloween stuff!!!", halloween being my favorite holiday. I went through the isles, hearing plastic skeletons singing stupid songs and the occasional really loud scream from various battery-operated toys. It occurred to me that we really are feeding the energy of very negative things, and that usually, very happy and positive people, things, and events are considered not normal or unrealistic. I'm very sad to admit that Halloween is very close to plunging from the top of my list of favorite holidays. :\

  • I dont celebrate any holidays but Halloween is really my least favorite...so much darkness and bad energy. There's definitely some coolness to it...you can see why so many people are dragged in...its just scary to me...and takes away from the seriousness of the unseelie..

    • I usually see holidays as a time to decorate, have fun, and see loved ones. I've liked Halloween in the past because it's an autumnal holiday(autumn being my very favorite season), it's fun to dress up, and I LOVE the colors and everything for decorating. I like to decorate. :) Anyway, the scary part of it wasn't as big with me, but seeing it now after reading this book has left me a little scared, saddened, and contemplative. Looks like Lyra's got no favorite holiday anymore.. *sigh* I don't really even get to decorate for Xmas/Yule these days because my love is Jewish. Perhaps I should decorate for the seasons from now on instead...
      • well, maybe you can take your newfound insight as a call to help counteract the unseelie energy that gets fed on that holiday! Maybe carve a happy faced jack-o-lantern, dress as a fancy faerie, elf, gnome, whatehaveyou and encourage your friends to do the same! Halloween doesn't HAVE to be all about death and doom, it's just that those are very prevalent themes, most likely propagated by the conservative establishment out of fear of our hallowed ancient pagan practices which they misconstrue as macabre and morbid. So, maybe we should Take Back Halloween and re-hallow it :) I think there is a lot to be said for the negativity and the positivity of the faerie realms being fed by our light or dark actions. And as such, it only seems right to help support the innundated seelie friends by being as positive a magical light to the world as possible, even amongst a tide of darkness.. not only during halloween but all the time :)

have fun reading someplace to be flying.. i loved it.. and check out Hawk's paintings of the Crow girls :)

        love

        • ok, but death is part of the cycle, and i think it's healthy to acknowledge it, you know, remember our ancestors and all that. i'm not into the obsession with slasher movies and such at this time of year. death needs to be honoured, not murder. but besides honouring the dead, those who went before us, it's a good time to let things die that no longer serve us. we don't have to be bright and bouncy in every season, but rather i think we can recognize the "dark sacred night."
  • I walked into a store a couple days ago and saw all the toys of death and scariness... and at first was like "Ooh!!" but then remembered why I didn't like the concept of "Halloween" all over again. *sigh*

    Anyone have thoughts on this?
    • i really love halloween. it's one of my favorite holidays of all time. there is just so much swirling energy around this time of year... i really feel the veil at it's thinnest. and i still like what i said last year about it all...and would add that darkness doesn't have to = badness. there are many dark things that are so beautiful and make me very happy. like night time for instance...
      • Samhain is my favorite Sabbath on the Wheel of the Year because it is Celtic new year.It is a time of honoring the dead but also paying "respects" to our darker and shadow selves. Lets face it folks , we all have one. If you don't make friends with your shadow , then you are in deep danger of becoming overpowered by it. Talk to your shadow . Acknowledge and try to gain understanding about ALL aspects of yourself and others. If we didn't have Dark and Death , then we wouldn't be able to enjoy the Light and Life as brightly as we do. DeLint has helped me see this as a postive thing and therefore led the way as a shaman of our times by giving me Urban tales that I can understand, for my generation.
As a modern Pagan I see and embrace the gray areas of life. Balance is what most of us are trying to achive and tipping our hats to The Light as well as the Dark seems to me to be a good way of doing this.
        • I always enjoyed the decorating, guising, and of course trick or treats (which I never did do a trick for) as a kid, plus+++ my bday is 4 days before, so......I LOVE HALLOWEEN!

Now, I am superexcited about this year because i have found out that the veil is indeed the thinnest at Samhain!! How exciting to know that and keep an open mind, heart and eyes. I am going to dress up..... not scary probaby.....so i won't be frightening off any ghosts (one of my favorite words....say it out loud and enjoy how it makes you go "s-s") or evilness......but as a faery dweller so as to maybe invite and intice some faery dwellers to make themselves known to me and Willow and Sylver!

I would like to follow some of the traditions of Scotland/Ireland where the whole thing got started over 2000 years ago.....walk around the house backwards 3 times before dark to take care of all evil, go to the lake and see if i can see a reflection of my true love in it, tell a joke or do a trick for treats....think about the change from summer to the cold dark winter and ritually try to make it an easy one.

I love Halloween, it has always touched me in my soul.....

i hope you can find a way to love it too Lyra, it's got good roots......
