The Mystery of Grace

Seems like it's been a long time since we had any activity around here. So, without further ado I'll just drop in a few words about de Lint's new adult novel "The Mystery of Grace". First thing I want to mention is that I'm only about halfway through it. I saw the package from amazon on my stoop when I got home from work last night and went all happy inside. This new work is a departure from the Newford location that de Lint has been using for the last 15 years or so. It is set in the southwestern United States and centers on a female mechanic. One of the things I find myself doing while I read is to try to identify characters in this book with Charles' Newford crew. "Oh this is the Jilly character" or "That's the Bones character". While this is general silliness, as de Lint characters are never so cardboard cutout-y, what I do find is that, like the analogues that can be drawn from one mythology to another across cultures, there are familiar voices here. So even if you are upset about de Lint leaving Newford, you find yourself comfortable in the new town and willing to open up to new friends. I'm not sure which characters will continue into future writings, or if there will be any more novels or short stories in this setting, but I am pleased with the change in location and with the story that has all of the hallmarks of a de Lint novel that we love: The magical in the everyday, the waking up to a deeper more expansive world view, the longing for love and the value of friendship and trust.

I will probably add some more notes here once I have finished. But wanted to drop these few lines to encourage you to go get the book. It may not be Newford, but it is definitely de Lint.

Peace,
Windhawk

I ordered this chapbook off the net and was completly glad I did. Its not a long read but a very worth wild one. I finished it in one day but was left feeling as if my heart and soul had black , feathered wings.Theres alot of native myth and symbol , that brings the mind alive with awe. If you get the chance to read this story of Mr. Delint's, I highly recommend it.

what deep lessons have you found reading DeLint novels?

Ok, I think my favorite book is "Into the Green". It taught me a deep lesson that I even try to bring to the classes that I teach in shamanic journey. I don't want to blow the plot but anyone who has read it will know what I mean when I say, "There is no shame or blame in the spirit world, only repercussions. Not matter what you do, no matter how terrible, they love you."

What are deep lessons that you learned from his books?

Hello, all... I'm new to this Tribe

Some of you already know me from other Tribes, and I told myself that I was not going to join any other Tribes due to lack of time and wanting to stay in touch with those I'm already involved in. BUT, Hawk turned me on to Charles de Lint, and, I can't seem to get enough of his writing! I am still reading Moonheart, and, man o man, I'm on the edge of my chair, seat of my pants, etc., etc., etc.!!! What a writer. How can it be that I haven't discovered such and illustrious author until now??? No worries. I have him in my sights now, and that's all that matters. Man, I can often figure where a book or movie, etc. is going, not so with de Lint! I love this guy!

Anyway, just wanted to drop in and say howdy to everybody. I look forward to many other wonderful books and fellowship here.

Just finished Jack of Kinrowan... (one kinda sorta not really spoiler)

It was very fun! Not quite as intense as I usually get from reading de Lint, but very pleased all the time. I'm surprised that I actually guessed correctly on the ending! I don't normally do that.. So that's I think why it wasn't quite as intense toward the end. Usually it's one of those times where you're like "What the HELL is going to happen next?!" but this one for me was "Ooh, I bet they're gonna..." but it was still a really fun ride. I'm glad I finally finished it! I took a few months break from reading cuz I couldn't find my eBook charger, but I found it during the packing and I'm back in the full swing of it. Some place to be flying is next!

Has anyone else read this?

I have to say that though I feel a bit enlightened by a certain part of this book, it also saddens me quite a bit. It talks about how humans would much sooner believe in evil than they would in good, and that's why Seelie is dwindling while unseelie is growing and thriving... and that the unseelie feeds on our fears, negative energy, etc... then talks about how (in the book) because of this the seelie hide on Samhain from the unseelie because they're just too powerful for them to fight off.

I've been thinking about this for several days now, and a couple days ago we headed to Target to get some plastic bins, and I said "Ooh! let's check out the halloween stuff!!!", halloween being my favorite holiday. I went through the isles, hearing plastic skeletons singing stupid songs and the occasional really loud scream from various battery-operated toys. It occurred to me that we really are feeding the energy of very negative things, and that usually, very happy and positive people, things, and events are considered not normal or unrealistic. I'm very sad to admit that Halloween is very close to plunging from the top of my list of favorite holidays. :\

The tower and the bear

the tower & Bear

There is a wooden tower
in the woods,
upon the hill,
above the lake, forgotten;
walls greyed like old barnwood,
wizard-hat roof,
closed around in autumn
by crowds of goldenrod and maple.
Refuse litters
the first floor:
rusting stovepipes,
rusting stove,
broken chair,
forgotten raincoat
hanging from a peg
beside the rickety
ladder stairs.

Up those stairs,
dust lies thick as neglected dreams
there,
in that forgotten tower;
up again,
one more floor,
into the wizard's hat now,
where a mountain range of
shin-high bat guano
strides across the water-stained wood,
skitter-skree of bats
in the crown of the raftered hat above,
but you can see,
through the trees,
a glimpse of water,
you can understand
how the tower came to be,
if not why it was forgotten.

The road that once
wound up the hill
is so overgrown now
you need imagination
to mark its turns,
but I don't ever follow that road;
I cut through the woods,
up the hill,
above the lake;
I step over fallen snags,
work my way through the new growth,
over the humped bones
of granite behemoths
more forgotten than any wooden tower;
for a time
I follow the swath Jim and Paul cut,
removing dying trees
for firewood,
then I slip into the deeper woods,
through the sudden surprises
of small sunned meadows,
past the dry paper football
of a hornet's nest
hanging from
an impossibly thin twig,
down into a gully,
scramble up again
and then I see it,
first the wizard's hat,
shingles black,
then the tower.

I sit
where the moss makes no differentiation
between limestone and granite
and fallen snag,
where the goldenrod rustles
and the birch and maple murmur,
and I listen to their gossip,
all the gossip
—because even
the silent stone underfoot
and the motionless Queen Anne's lace
has a voice;
the only sound I make
is the faint skritch of pen on paper,
waking the tower
in my sketchbook,
ghostlike, at first,
lines so faint, they mean nothing,
but connecting, one to the other,
gathering volume and shape,
until there are two towers
in the wood,
upon the hill,
above the lake:
one an echo,
the other forgotten.

And that would be enough:
the tower, the gossip,
the insect hum,
the sunlight an Impressionist's dream
as it patterns the hilltop,
yellow on green,
violet on green,
green on green on brown,
the maples red,
the tower brown and grey,
as though it had grown,
moss-like from the forest floor,
rather than raised by human hand.
My heart is so full,
it would be enough.

But the forest allows me
one more gift:
a rustle in the berry bushes
down in the gully.
The bear seems as
surprised as I am
- delicate for all his bulk;
coat, a midnight black;
nose lifted as he senses me
sensing him;
eyes the dark of the shadows
that collect at the bottom
of the lake.

He stands so close,
not ten feet from me,
I could count the hairs on his muzzle,
were I so inclined,
but at that moment
my gaze encompasses everything:
no one detail,
but all details at once.
My pulse drums,
first with fear,
then with awe,
then with a gratefulness
that words cannot express.

I hold my breath
and know that,
although I am only a guest here,
for one brief moment,
I may call this home;
I have been given,
for one brief moment
which lasts a lifetime,
a glimpse into the Otherworld
from which all our spirits
once came.

Then my host turns,
broad black back
slipping away among the trees
like water running downhill,
retreating
like a faerie glamour,
and he is gone.
But the wonder remains,
lodged inside my spirit,
and know I will never forget
the tower,
the bear,
the gift I was allowed,
there in the woods,
upon the hill,
above the lake.

I know this may sound silly but you should all really check out his web site. I gives all his tour dates and whatnot, and one hell of a lot of info on him, fun pics, check out some of the people he jams with, there is a great one of him playing with Alan Lee. He also talk a lot about what he believes in or at least what he thinks he believes in very cool stuff.

Hi, I'm new to this tribe but a longtime fan of Charles DeLint. Coincidentally, I saw in the local Willamette Week newspaper that he will be appearing at Powell's Bookstore this Friday evening at the Cedar Hills Crossing store.

Ok folks today was great, i got the opportunity to meet my favorite Author and his wife and give him the Weirden. well first off I showed up early as is my usual way of doing things and I was nervous as all get out. then When they opened the Reading room I was informed that He was very , very late, stillin Portland as a matter of fact and might just end up doing a small signing. Needless to say I was crushed, having the writting class taken away and now this I was about to call the whole thing an utter loss, then I simply told myself I was going to stay at the book shop till he showed up late or not. Quite a few people took off, so I figured maybe if everyone leaves I can just hacve a nice afternoon with him. Anyway I went back to wait sat in the first row and slowly the room started to fill up again. Then all of a sudden he was there standing in front of me setting his things down and himself and he just started talking to us like he had known us for years. He read some of the Lost Grrl, and took questions, I couldnt even think of a damn thing to say. Then I loosened up a bit and got involved with the discussion. When he left the stage to do the book signing I said I had something for him and he was a bit surprised and said "Oh really, what is it?" at this point I took out the Weirden. Last night I did the whole thing up, making each pice and all so it was a working system. He first took out the board, which I had blown up to 20x20 and he was very impressed with the triskell and all yet he couldnt quite place why I had made this for him, then I took out the little leather bag with all the pieces in it and gave it to him he took them out and he said," This is the Weirden!" I told him how I had been toying with it for some time and wanted to finish it for this trip he was making. He called over his wife and they looked at it for some time. He also took a look at some of my character designs of some of his characters and really liked Raven a lot, and the crowgirls as well. I am very excited to see him and maryann play on Monday night and again next weekend as he and Charles Vess are at a convention not too far from where I live. it was a magical day to say the least. If anyone gets the chance to see him by all means go do it. Check out his website and see if the book signing tour is coming anywhere near you, then go.

Ok folks wish me luck I am trying to complete a project I have been tinkering with for many years. The completion of deLints Weirden, it is a divination system he created in the book Moonheart. Any who, I am hoping to have it done by the fifteenth when I go to his class and give it to him as a sort of thank you. Granted it wont be in bone just vast amounts of small drawings and one hopefully beautiful casting board wich Iam making today. If you havent heard of this check itout on his web site
www.charlesdelint.com
then look up weirden I think he has an explantion of it there.

www.bookcrossing.com

Ok, has anyone ever heard of this? Here is how they describe it.

“At BookCrossing, you can register any book you have on the site, and then set the book free to travel the world and find new readers.

Leave it on a park bench, at a coffee shop, at a hotel on vacation. Share it with a friend or tuck it onto a bookshelf at the gym -- anywhere it might find a new reader! What happens next is up to fate, and we never know where our books might travel next. Track the book's journey around the world as it is passed on from person to person.”

It seems waaaay cool to me and I’m betting some of you will agree. It’s the same concept as the Where’s George deal on one dollar bills.

Anyway, I am going to sign up and start with the two books I got off amazon (after I get home and read them of course). What some groups are doing is sending books to each other just to log contacts (or passing them around a room full of people). I don’t think that would be that way to go personally but this sounds like a cool way for people to get to read DeLint’s books and have some fun.

So, who’ll join me?
Little (Grrl) Lost

So I read Charles de Lint's new book "Little (Grrl) Lost" this weekend. Like "The Blue Girl" before it, it is a Young Adult book published by Viking. T.J. is a fourteen-year-old girl whose family has had to move from their farm out in Tyson to the northern suburbs of Newford. She discovers a punky Little named Elizabeth who has decided to run away from home. Home being inside the walls of T.J.'s new home. Anything else you want to know you will have to read for yourself.

One of the thing I like best about de Lint's work is his portrayal of the various beings collectively known as faerie. Somehow his descriptions of their temperaments and trickiness seem authentic to me in a way that other authors' works don't. The book does takes place in Newford, but these are all new characters to get to know.

I had thought about giving a full-on book review but I don't think it's necessary. If you like de Lint's work, you'll like this book. If you've never read him, you'll like this book. I was completely absorbed for the day-and-a-half it took me to read it (I had to eat and sleep and stuff). Go check it out.

Peace,
Windhawk

Here is how it works. Somebody gets the story started with some simple scenario. A character and a location. The next person takes the story and adds something. We all contribute until we have a full length short story.

The story begins with a young girl named Joy in a high rise apartment overlooking the slums between Downtown and the asian market district. Its a full moon at night, and she is studying for her classes as she is looking outside.

I probably won't be around Tribe for a day or two because I will be camped in the lazyboy with snacks and a reading lamp. I tend not to read deLint's books as much as fall into them, you know? I need one of them computer chairs with the potty built in that Sylver has, but in an armchair model heh heh, because it's hard to pull your drawers back up with a book in one hand.

Frank MacEowen Anyone?

hi all . . . has anyone here enjoyed the books of Frank MacEowen, "The Mist-Filled Path", "Spiral of Memory and Belonging" and "Meditations on the Celtic Spirit Wheel" (I'm not sure about that last title, but it's something like that . . .)
Frank is a wonderful, poetic shaman and teacher in the Celtic tradition. If you haven't picked these up, I recommend that you do soon! Walk the hills with this wonderful teacher . . . you will not be sorry ;)

an excerpt from "The Mist-Filled Path":

The Spirt and Practice of Hillwalking

The Celtic people have always been a people of voyages, and hillwalking if a natural outgrowth of this voyaging spirit. It is, in some sense, a way to step into the flow of voyaging and participate in the dynamism of ancestral memory. Hillwalking is a practice and custom rooted in the celebration of movement: the movement of the tides, the movement of the ancestors, and the movement of our own feet across the sacred landscape. Hillwalking is, in effect, a way of assuming our place among the cycles of movement of stars, ocean waves, and rain clouds. Hillwalking, in this light, becomes a sourcing exercise, and experience of recalibrating our spirits to the mystery that is all around us, a meditation of movement.

There are, of course, as many ways to approach hillwalking as there are people. I have been on some hillwalks that were storytelling events. Our hillwalking was like stepping into the "Dindsenchas," the Irish "place stories," where every hill, cave, well, and stream has a name and an ancient genealogy. I often learn a great deal when I am a guest at someone's home and we go hillwalking. Every person has a story, and every person has his or her own way of seeing things that offers me a lesson about his or her love for the land. At other times hillwalking has become a healing event. As we walk my companion reveals a heavy heart, and the spirit of the land herself beckons for a purification of these 'burdensome thoughts," as Kierkegaard has put it.

Sometimes when someone comes to me with a problem, I will get the sense that hillwalking is what is needed. The lack of movement around an issue receives an almost sacrosanct momentum when the troubled person gives voice to his or her trouble while we are hillwalking. Some of the best healing that can occur, I think, takes place out on the land, walking. And sometimes, as will be demonstrated in the last chapter, hillwalking can become a conduit for divination within the natural world.

Anyone up for a Hillwalk?

;-)

Notable de Lint Quotes

I'm hoping y'all are in to this idea. I have been so encouraged by de Lint's writing, that I copy some passages in to a notebook- so 100 years ago, I know, but there's something to the act of writing I think. What are some of the things you would write down to remember? Here are a couple of mine...
...from Wild Wood- ..."muddy marshland and birdsong and the chorusing frogs holding parliament down by shore."
...."the only limitations we have are the ones we make for ourselves."
...from Tapping the Dream Tree..."There was a time, long ago, when speaking was a ceremony."
.. "live large and walk in Beauty."
Just some of my faves so far and I wish I had done this earlier as I would have a treasure trove of deLintisms. :) I look forward to reading your posts on this one.

I like the image of Walker, the deer man in Widdershins
The Fox guy from that one book
Margaret the Magpie lady
Cody and the various other canine cousins
who else????

Im looking for somebody who might be willing to donate their web design skills to a worthy cause. Its a social networking site, and media site that will include DIY skill sharing, mutual-aid, sustainable living, and the creation of co-ops. Small cash reward is possible, as well as access to community resources once they are established. Just wanted to put the word out, and figured that this tribe would have some progressive minded people in it.

I just finished this, soaking in the bathtub. I like reading while I relax in the tub. Let me tell this book was wonderful and so true Delint form. I ordered my autograph copy off of Subteranean Press's website. Go check out the great editions that they have to offer. I highly recommed Medicine Road, but they have other copies of his chapbooks as well. Love, Light & LUck!

Manitou vs Fey ?

I've just finally finished reading "FOrests of the Heart" which took me several months to get through. It seems like thats usually the case with deLint Reading, it takes me like 3 months to get through the first half and then i finish the second half in a couple of days. Anyway..I've been thinking about his theme of the native american spirits (manitou) and the antagonism with the European spirits (fey.) This set-up doesn't really resonate with me for various reasons. It makes great stories, but it doesn't seem to me that the spirits from continents would necessarilly posess the traits of the humans from those far away places and cultures. It seems to me that European Fay and Native american Manitou are basically the same thing, just from different places and that they would have more in common than not. Though, i suppose the same thing could be said about humans from different areas of the world and look what we get ourselves into. I think basically it comes down to the notion that spirit entities aren't as bound by the divisions of "here" and "there" and space/time in general and so would be just as able to pop throuhg the otherworld from Albequerqi to Mozambique as much as walking from tree to tree. And if that were the case, why fight over whose land it is they're currently on? It seems the concept of "my land/your land" is one that is not in harmony with the natural cycles and therefore, not in harmony with the denizens of the natural spirit world.
Anyway, just some random thoughts i've been juggling around. What do you think?

He has graced us with his wonderful stories and now he bless us with his musicial talents. Every Thursday night when Mr. Delint and his charming wife MAryAnn are in town they play at PAtty's Pub on 1186 Bank St in Ottawa. I have been planning on trying to go see them for years. Also in Nov 2 - 5 he will be at the World Fantasy Convention in Austin ,Tx. April 6-8 2007 he shall be at Minicon 42 in Bloomington Mn. As well Sept 21-23 2007 he will be at Foolscap in Bellevue, Wa. I just thought you guys might be intrested in meeting him. He is a very nice guy and makes himself very availble to his fans. You should really try to to get the chance to hear him play . It is AWESOME!

What De Lint book would you recomend to someone new to his works?

I always reccomend The Onion Girl. Partly because that's the first one i read and i've had a wonderful ride with the restof his books having that as a basis. I also think TOG gives a good first look into Newford , the nature of the Otherworld, and the interrelation of manitou and Fae and their interactions with the human world. it kind of covers all my favorite parts of Delint's writing. it's got superb character development and a heartbreaking, exhilirating, extatic journey that the main character, Jilly, undergoes.
what do you reccomend?

So far I've only read the first story because as soon as I was finished I HAD to read it to Jim (We were driving to Idyllwild for a nature fix so instead of music I read to him!). So now I know Jilly a bit and after reading all your discussions so far I cant wait to meet the Raven girl and the Manitou...
I loved, loved, loved the first story and now ...Im looking everywhere for balloon men...i want to hear their laughter!
After I read it to Jim I could see him contemplating and asked what he was thinking and he said "I've seen the parrot flock in Santa Ana." I said "Me too...and the ones in Pasadena and Santa Monica...your magic's not flying around out there somewhere right?" He just smiled and held his chest....

Fire has picked up some great cover art for us, This doesn't strictly relate to deLint but perhaps we can share some of those covers. that you thought were just atrocious in every way. I feel it is kind of the way it works with most fantasy novels, that the art is just way out there and doesn't quite fit the story at all.

or should I be reading the Newford books in THIS order (question and quote of DeLint's site)...? Sylver...?

Order of Newford Books

Where do I start reading the Newford stories?
"The books have all been written in such a way that you should be able to pick up any one and get a full and complete story. However, characters do reoccur, off center stage as it were, and their stories do follow a sequence. The best place to start is the collection Dreams Underfoot. From there they go pretty much in this order:
The Dreaming Place
A Whisper To A Scream (originally credited to "Samuel M. Key")
I'll Be Watching You (originally credited to "Samuel M. Key")
Memory And Dream
The Ivory And The Horn
Trader
Someplace To Be Flying
Moonlight And Vines
Forests Of The Heart
The Onion Girl
Seven Wild Sisters (also available in Tapping the Dream Tree)
Tapping the Dream Tree
Spirits in the Wires
Medicine Road
The Blue Girl
Widdershins
The Dreaming Place and The Blue Girl are YA novels. A Whisper To A Scream and I'll Be Watching You are, respectively, a horror novel and a thriller; they're darker fare than the other Newford books and aren't really that integral to the underlying, ongoing backstory that takes place off center stage in so many of the books and stories. "

Help! *swims in confused circles*

For me, De Lint has really helped me bring my nebulous ideas of Fae in the modern world into a more coherent idea, inparticular, the realm of the Otherworld. I love how he describes this realm as being accessible to everyone and by spirits of every culture. I also really love the idea set forth by his native american spirit characters (do his european fae think this too?) of there being a sort of overarching principle of The Grace, which is the source of all gods, goddesses, man, animal, and spirits of every sort. Our actions can add to or detract from it depending on their nature. I take it as a name for the Unity of all that IS and have adopted this principle into my everyday life. It really fits my cosmology well.
i could go on, but this was the first thing to come to mind :)
how has De Lint affected you ?

my wife and i most recently finished reading Widdershins, which is an abosulte masterpiece. DeLint has really perfected his style of switching between story arcs without ever having to feel like "oh i can't wait to get back to the main characters." as is I found to be the case in a couple of his books like Moonheart and Greenmantle (both of which i still LOVED)
what are you reading?
You guys will love her...oh...she's in the young adult section.
(Zoe just informed me Holly doesnt have any mention of DeLint on her website...hmmm)

L.A. Fae... new tribe!

Thought you all should know that I made a new tribe... please join if you feel so inclined. :)

Blessings,
Lyra

It's for all fae in the Los Angeles area - be it faery, pixie, elf, dragon, goblin, 'kin and friends - to get together, play, scheme, romp, frolic, and just plain get into mischief! If it suits your fancy, that is. :) This is a spin-off of my other two Fae tribes, PDX and Eugene Fae. :D

"Pixie, kobold, elf, and sprite,
All are on their rounds tonight;
In the wan moon's silver ray,
Thrives their helter-skelter play."
-Joel Benton

Here is a great place for posting about fae festivals, events, gatherings, or just to let people know you're having a tea party in the park. Also, you can't go wrong with good conversation!

Just remember: There's a difference between being mischievous and flat out mean. Don't get TOO unseelie on us, now. ^_~*

Costumes greatly encouraged!
