"From Funky Fusion to Cutting Edge Cabaret (C)", Yasmine, who has an extensive background in ballet, tap, jazz, & Middle Eastern dance, is the studio owner of Mid-East Dance by Yasmine. Yasmine spent much of 2004 touring with the Bellydance Superstars performing in major cities around the United States as well as Barcelona, Spain and after touring teamed up with Master Tabla Player Issam Houshan in offering Drum & Dance workshops. Yasmine is well recognized for her dynamic and precise movements and her ability to portray the music, which she carefully extends to her students - grooming them for their own spectacular performances. As well as being a sought after instructor due to her personable and fun teaching approach, Yasmine's distinct performance style is often referred to as "Cutting Edge Cabaret."

Got “Magic” Hips? Rhythmic Hips = “Magic” Hips! (2 hours) SATURDAY (12:15 - 2:15)
Dancers will learn to interpret the sounds of the drums by drilling some of Yasmine’s favorite techniques and movements to Middle Eastern Rhythms to accentuate the “Dums” and “Teks”! Drilling dance movement to these rhythms will help the dancer gain more control and to feel the rhythm. Then we will put these techniques to the test with “The Rhythmic Soul Train” Exercise and “The Battle of Rhythmic Hips!”

Zills & Drills (2 hours) SATURDAY (2:30 - 4:30)
Drills for combining finger cymbal work with dance movement and working with various rhythms. This class also leads into a Full Zill Drill routine that can be used for practice or group performance using the method of set Patterns to accompany music mixed with dance movement combinations!

Funky Fusion Combos to Choreography (4 hours) SUNDAY (10:00 - 2:00)
The combos presented in this class includes some cabaret technique mixed with a spicy blend of tribal style and alternative belly dance fusion topped with Yasmine’s own Funky Flare that can be used for a variety of modern routines! Funky Fusion blends the power and the beauty of tribal and cabaret! This class will include technique & drilling several combinations for the first portion of the class and then applying these combinations to lead into one of Yasmine’s own Funky Fusion routines.

Instructor bio:
A certified yoga instructor, Ashley Bennett stumbled upon Tribal Bellydance after coming across a Rachel Brice instructional DVD. While running Seladora Dance Company in Waycross, GA, she crossed paths with Natalie Brown and discovered her destiny. She left her life, school and job, moved to Columbia, and spent a year sleeping on the floor at the top of Natalie’s stairs while studying American Tribal Style with Delirium. When Delirium made the switch to Tribal Fusion,Ashley came aboard as a permanent member, and has been a driving artistic force in Alternacirque. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! They provide shelters, meal, clothing, education, counseling, medical and dental care and other services that really benefit the community. Last year Tribal Alchemy was able to give a van load of donations to SafeHaven along with some money. Thank you to all that donated! This year, their services have been taxed more than ever so lets show them how much we appreciate what they do for others!

~Stage flooring: 3/4" plywood raised on 1x4 slats. Covered by 1/8" tempered hardboard. (As soon as we get the seating configuration we will let you know of the stage area. Don't worry you will not have a little stage in the middle of the room as shown in the picture )
~Dressing rooms are availabe but please come prepared as much as possible because space is limited.
~No fire or animals are allowed in the show.
There are limited spaces so please send in your application as soon as possible

Durga Tour Workshop with Tempest, Wednesday May 6th.

Columbia is proud to be a stop on Tempest's Durga Tour! This workshop will take place in the place of our normal basics class at 711 E. Main St. in Lexington, in the CDE studios in the basement of the old mill. Cash or check at the door, or pay ahead of time via paypal to natalie_c_brown at yahoo dot com.

Tempest started her exploration of dance in early 2000 on the East Coast. She quickly found belly dance to be incredibly rewarding not only physically, but spiritually and emotionally, as well as a source of inspiration for her visual art.

Although she enjoys what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance. By working (playing) outside of the box, Tempest engages the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling , passionate expression, and sensuous, mezmerizing movement. She particularly enjoys performing Raks Gothique, also known as Gothic Belly Dance, and sacred-fusion forms of belly dance.

Strange Presence – 7:30-9:30 PM, $30

It’s all about bleeding your soul out to audience, serving it to them on a platter, and then eating THEM for lunch instead. A truly successful performance does more than show how well you can do the moves—it should really speak to your audience and exude expression. You CAN learn how to have a stronger personality on stage and channel that energy for a more dynamic performance. Discover the key aspects of capturing your audience with your stage presence and develop your own onstage drama! We’ll particularly focus on improvisational technique, character development, and learning to be more “in the moment.” This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

April's Alternacirque show will be graced with two of Washington D.C.'s finest alternative performers: Tribal Bellydancer Asharah is returning to the Art Bar stage, and we are absolutely thrilled to have dancer, fire performer and sideshow queen Mab, Just Mab bringing her vaudeville hilarity along for the ride. On Friday, April 24th, both performers will join us at Art Bar for our 9:30 show. 1211 Park St., no cover, the bar is 21+ but we're hopefully performing outside, barring bad weather.

And since they'll be in town anyway, we figured we would pick their professional brains about their craft while they were here. In other words, WORKSHOPS!

Workshops take place on Saturday, April 25th. We're in the process of confirming location, but it's likely to be at the Lexington Old Mill. More information as it comes.

Join Asharah for three hours of intense practice aimed at polishing your bellydance technique and building strength and stamina. Asharah is known for her clean technique and muscular execution , and in this workshop she will share with you tips and tricks for sharpening hard movements like hip work and chest locks and for deepening and intensifying smooth movements like undulations and Mayas. She will also share with you a few of her signature robotic movements to add spice to your bellydance movement vocabulary.

This class covers how to build a "bit", and then how to take the bits and build a set and a show! We will also develop a toolbox of elements to get the most out of your audience, heckler handling techniques, and much much more. All performers welcome, not just bellydancers. If you're a sideshow artist, fire eater, hula hooper, host, emcee, poet, magician or improv comedian, come along and improve your presentation.

Asharah and I really had a blast in Columbia and the Art Bar show was off the hook! It's somewhat rare when you have to stand in line get a glimpse of the dancing - a good sign of a truly packed house. I was impressed with the entire show, the line up, and I was very impressed with Delirium - you guys are awesome. Loved the Nachtmahr piece. I only wish I could have met all of you. I'm wondering who teaches intermediate level or possibly drills classes who would allow a "stranger" to drop in for a night?
I've been there once, but I'm not yet familiar with the area enough to be more specific than "Columbia."

Who? What times/nights? Where? and cost?

Founded in 2007, the Society fuses diverse elements such belly dance, cabaret performance, Romany music, foppish occultism, unapologetically pretentious Belle Epoque café living, goodwill, bad behavior, misappropriated pop songs, and the horribly misguided notion that one can try and squeeze an entire Balkan brass band into one accordion. And if all of my previous experience with the Mezmer Society holds, they will play and create mayhem all night long. Crazy kids.

Hi all, I just joined this tribe and wanted to say a quick hello, I live in Charleston SC and have been bellydancing for about 8 years now, unfortunately just at home lately due to time constraints and being either pregnant or a nursing mom for three out of the four years we've lived here. My husband is military so we move often, but my youngest kids are at the age now where my 15 yo can babysit and maybe I can get in some bellydancing fellowship time...I'm looking forward to getting up to date on the happenings in this area and getting to know some of you!

We landed something really, really amazing last minute. Raquy and the Cavemen are a new school middle eastern percussion and music group out of Brooklyn, New York. Raquy was supposed to be in Asheville this Thursday, but the stars aligned for us and we got them instead. WOOT! If you've not seen Raquy Danziger and her crew, they're highly skilled, high energy and highly entertaining, one of the best live acts I have ever seen. Intrigued? For those of you that haven't heard, 701 Whaley St. is across from the Gramby and Olympia mills, and is an old brick building that used to be the community store. It's been reconfigured into huge, currently empty storefronts, a gallery, a contemporary arts center and live work spaces for artists in residence. If you take the Huger exit on I-126, follow it across Blossom and across the railroad tracks, it will curve around to the left in front of the mills and become Whaley St. It will be immediately on your left on the corner of Olympia Ave.

Just read Tempest post..I ask that everyone sends kaihea's friends and family prayers and healing. As belly dancers we should all honor and respect one another and be there for each other.

Just found out that the bellydance community lost a beautiful light last night. Kaihea was an amazing woman - a strong soul and a graceful heart. All I can think of was the last time I saw her perform - Belly Horror last year - and how powerful that piece was, and thinking "there's no way anything can beat this woman!". It's a vicious reminder on a sore heart that life isn't fair.

So even if you didn't know her, I wanted to share Maduro's post about a very special album that was released earlier this week:

ABOUT LISA ZAHIYA
Lisa Zahiya began the study of bellydance in 2000, and immediately fell in love with the dance, it's history, and the large and diverse bellydance community. Before beginning her study of bellydance, Lisa studied ballet, jazz and hip hop dance. She was a member of the University of Maryland dance team.
Lisa began her career in the Baltimore/DC metropolitan area, where she had the privilege to study with Autumn Ward, Laurel Victoria Gray and Artemis Mourat.
She moved to Baltimore and studied intensively with 2nd generation bellydancer, Piper Reid Hunt. Lisa was a member of the Daughters of Rhea performance troupe and is certified LEVEL II dancer in the Piper Method of American Belly Dance.
In the end of 2005 she moved to Asheville, NC. She joined Baraka Mundi, one of the south east's premier tribal bellydance troupes, in March of 2006.
Lisa also teaches and performs hip hop dance. She is known for her fusion of hip hop and bellydance.
In 2008, Lisa travelled to Long Beach, CA where she won the title of Tribal Fusion Bellydancer of the Universe. She also recently completed a week long professional and teacher training program with Aziza of Montreal.
Lisa now teaches and performs as a soloist. Lisa is an in demand workshop instructor and is grateful to be able to travel and teach bellydance.
Lisa lives in downtown Asheville, NC where she teaches bellydance and hip hop dance.

ABOUT SAMITE'
SamiTe' is a world-renowned bellydancer and teacher.
Blending traditional and modern forms, SamiTe' has brought her versatile style to audiences across the globe. In 2008, she won second place in the Bellydancer of the Universe Competition in Long Beach, Calif., as well as winning the Miss Congeniality Competition there.
She currently is the artistic director of Elysium bellydance ensemble in Asheville, N.C.

Alternacirque. Is. Breaking. Records.

Columbia is a university town. This place is deader than a doornail over the summer, plus the economy is obviously not very hot at the moment. Nevertheless, I heard on Thursday that Columbia Alternacirque's last show with the Mezmer Society broke attendance and take records for the Art Bar. Bigger than any live bands. Bigger than any Halloween. Somehow a tribal bellydance and fire show has become a hit in the middle of a Bible Belt town that still flies the Confederate Flag on the statehouse grounds. Who knew? I had no idea when I got blown into town three years ago that this was even possible, and it's all thanks to the amazing and talented people I get to work with every week.

So on the heels of that news, we are digging deep and building the new "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" show. This show has blown up into a monstrosity of new costumes, special effects, actors, dancers, fire performers, hula hoopers, and (tentatively) stilt walkers. We are attempting to push the envelope in every possible way. 14 people in one show that we're putting together in four weeks. I've taken over the basement rec-room, which currently looks like Jim Henson's Muppet Creature Shop. We have two weeks to go. Ready or not, this show goes live Friday, August 22nd at 10:30. "We're All Mad" gets a repeat performance at 9:30. Mark your calendars and come see the insanity.

Ashley and Natalie workshops in Columbia, August 2nd

We are happy to announce that we will be teaching a workshop day in the Columbia area on Saturday, August 2nd. We'll be at our old faithful location, the Center for Dance Education in the basement of the Old Mill, 711 E. Main St., Lexington, SC.

We'd like to continue our tradition of skipping the choreographies and going straight for hardcore technique and tools for you to use in your own fashion.

12 PM to 2 PM: Per popular request, Natalie will be teaching layering technique. We'll talk about the popular shimmy layers of course, but there's a whole host of other stuff we can layer in both the fast and slow vocabularies.

2:30 PM to 4:30 PM: Ashley is our go-to girl for smooth and gooey tribal fusion combos. She'll be giving advice on how to construct tribal "sentences," long streams of standard moves, cut, spliced and smooshed together that are perfect for solo work.

Workshops are $30 each (we understand the economy is crashing around our ears, so we're trying to keep it reasonable). Insane update of doom.

Hey, all. Welcome back to the magical mystery tour. If you'd like off this carnival ride, please send me an email and I'll remove you from the list.

Hoo boy. There is so much going on with me, Delirium and Alternacirque that I'm not sure where to start. We're flying pell mell into our busy season, so I'm going to start the weekly emails up again to help you keep track of what's happening. What follows is only the givens at the moment. There's more stuff in the fire, and I'll post as details are finalized and I get clearance to reveal them.

Website Stuff:

www.nataliebrown.net is in the process of being updated (finally, sorry guys). Due to overwhelming demand, included on the main page of this site is an itunes mix with a lot of the stuff I dance, teach and drill to. The list is by no means comprehensive, but it hits the highlights of artists commonly used in the bellydance community, and will give you a jumping off point to explore and find more stuff.

www.alternacirque.com is now live, and hopefully will be completed by the end of this weekend. Excuse the mess.

The deal with Bellydance Superstars:

First off, thanks for all the good wishes given to Ashley and me when we auditioned for Bellydance Superstars a few weeks back. Washington, D.C. was a great experience, and we made a great impression, though we didn't advance far enough in auditions to guarantee an immediate spot. Though we thought about it long and hard, we've decided not to go to L.A. to re-audition at this time. The economy is a large factor in preventing us, but I'm also feeling that my place and focus is here in Columbia and with Cirque at the moment. Thank you for all the offers of support.

Art Bar next Friday, July 25th, with THE MEZMER SOCIETY!

This show is so chock full of awesome, I keep jumping up and down with glee.

At 9:30, Alternacirque repeats our team-up with local DJ Deft Key for a live electronic set.

At 10:30, we debut our new vintage vaudeville set, "We're All Mad" with the help of five actors/heroes-for hire, an accordion, a whistle and a rubber duckie. Rehearsals have been hilarious, and we hope you like the show as much as we do.

Around 11:30, we'll feature The Mezmer Society from Asheville, NC. For those of you who have heard of Onca O'Leary and Baraka Mundi, this is Onca's new project. Live music, accordions, drums, vaudeville, singing, dancing, burlesque, and general debauchery, this is one of the most amazing acts in the Southeast I've seen. The last time I saw these guys, I ended up partying in a dance studio in Knoxville with them, Zafira, and a whole lot of red wine until the sun came up. August played ditties until about four AM, Onca did feats of acrobatics, and I did tangos with the drummer. This is standard operating procedure for The Mezmer Society, and the plan for Art Bar is to open the stage up for jam session and open dance after Mezmer's main set. We'll go until Art Bar kicks us out. All dancers and performers bring your dancing shoes. For those who have written me about other commitments, I'm pretty sure we'll still be going by the time you can get here.

Do not miss this one. This show is free, though we'll be doing a lot of tip begging to pay for 18 performers' gas money. We'll be outdoors in the Art Bar parking lot. Art Bar itself is 21+. See y'all there!

Alternacirque needs stilt walkers for August and September:

If you know any, or anyone that can conceivably pick it up quickly, I want two. Send them to me. Rehearsals for our new set begin July 31st. We have mandatory rehearsals all Mondays in August, with me reserving the right to call full Wednesday rehearsals as well. We split our compensation from Art Bar and tips among all performers, and you get a free drink tab the night of the show.

Classes:

Ongoing: Wednesday classes are still ongoing in the Lexington CDE studio, 711 E. Main St., in the basement of the Old Mill. 7-8 PM. $10 drop in rate. We're currently going through 3/4 shimmies until September 10th.

Starting Tuesday, August 12th, we'll start holding open dance sessions at the same location from 7-8 PM. This gives dances of all levels a chance to put their ATS skills into practice. Cost is $5, class cards accepted. I will run most of these sessions, though members of Delirium will step in when I'm out of town.

Our workshops:

Sunday, July 20th: Charleston, SC. I'll be teaching Tribal moves where technique blunders pop up the most: Egyptian Basic, Arabic Hiptwist, Spins and Snake Arms.

This workshop takes place in Charleston, SC from 3-5 PM on Sunday, July 20th. St. Andrew's Family Fitness center (Sam Rittenberg Blvd).

Saturday, August 2nd: We are happy to announce that we will be teaching a workshop day in the Columbia area on Saturday, August 2nd. We'll be at our old faithful location, the Center for Dance Education in the basement of the Old Mill, 711 E. Main St., Lexington, SC.

We'd like to continue our tradition of skipping the choreographies and going straight for hardcore technique and tools for you to use in your own fashion.

12 PM to 2 PM: Per popular request, Natalie will be teaching layering technique. We'll talk about the popular shimmy layers of course, but there's a whole host of other stuff we can layer in both the fast and slow vocabularies.

2:30 PM to 4:30 PM: Ashley is our go-to girl for smooth and gooey tribal fusion combos. She'll be giving advice on how to construct tribal "sentences," long streams of standard moves, cut, spliced and smooshed together that are perfect for solo work.

Workshops are $30 each (we understand the economy is crashing around our ears, so we're trying to keep it reasonable). I will accept class cards. And of course, we'll be throwing one of our infamous houseparty haflas of doom that evening. More details coming.

Ongoing monthly workshops in Greenville, SC: Workshops continue in Greenville, SC on the first Tuesday of every month. Next workshop date: August 5th. I'll be teaching tribal and tribal fusion technique - literally a month's worth over a two hour period. This class is $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

Features three days of cabaret and tribal workshops, vending, and two nights of performances. Featured instructors: Tamalyn Dallal, Tamra-henna, Gypsy Caravan, Moria Chappell, Mardi Love, Zafira Dance Company, Gina, Fatina, Liora, Amani Jabril, Aziza Nawal, Sha'ni, & Devyani Dance Company. Weekend September 18-21: Triboriginal outside Asheville, NC. I am going come hell or high water. This is my favorite event of the year. Featuring instruction by Zafira, Pirate Bellydancer Samantha Riggs, Baraka Mundi, Romka, Awalim, Blue Lotus Tribe, Politti, Gypsy Hands (for those of you who have been keeping up with my blogs, these are the amazing massage therapists/dancers who have changed my life), dance classes, business classes, fire classes, hooping classes, and music classes with Daveed from Turku, August from the Mezmer Society, and one of my favorites, River Guerguerian. The cool thing about this workshop is that your registration fee includes your lodging in the cabins as well as all meals provided by a whole foods chef (it's amazing). There are rates for significant others and children to attend as well, and there is some childcare provided. Best. Experience. Ever.

Weekend, October 4-5: Moria Chappel in Augusta, GA. Highly recommended, and we're planning on going. Moria is a powerhouse performer in Bellydance Superstars, and she always destroys me in workshops. The Magic Carpet Swap N Shop is THIS Saturday!

Heya everyone!

Info and reminders about the Swap n Shop (see the end of the email for the original info that went out) : Anyone who reserved a space must pay Jeannie the fee BEFORE you will be allowed to set up. For private swappers, that's $5, for professional vendors, that's $10. Not sure which you are? If you are offering primarily used items, a la a yard sale, you are a private swapper. If you are offering primarily new items, whether or not they are handmade by you, you are a professional vendor. We love vendors that offer handmade wares as we are fueling and encouraging the handmade revolution! So, this isn't an event where you will see alot of mass-market products that everyone else has. Viva la DIY!

There will NOT be tables there. We encourage everyone to bring a small table or, preferably, a blanket. Please keep in mind that this is a community event, and there will be alot of blankets and swappers. So, try not to crowd your neighbors or take over the entire space. We want everyone to benefit from this event so we can try to do it again and we want this to primarily be a chance for use to recycle costuming. Please determine BEFOREHAND what you are willing to swap, what you wish to sell, and what prices you are willing to accept. If you are selling, please bring change. Of course, you are solely responsible for your stuff and your cash. If you are buying, please bring smaller bills. There won't be anyone there to break that c-note, big spender! ;)

Plan to be there at 1PM to set up, and plan to be out by 4PM. Leave the space how you found it. I know it's a short time, but we didn't want to rent the room for eight hours, and only five or six people show up. If we have a good response, we'll try to get it for longer, but be aware that it will require everyone to contribute another fee for your spot so that the financial burden isn't on any one person. Again, this is a community event. :)

Alchemy will be having a raffle (see below for more details) and a bake sale (ditto). Come hungry and support our efforts to bring Unmata to the Southern Oasis in 2009! If you want to contribute something to the bake/food sale, we'd love that! We have water, lots of sweets, and sandwiches lined up. Just email me if you want to make a contribution. :)

Bring a friend or seven and browse the blankets, buy a raffle ticket and have fun in a casual setting with YOUR bellydance community! Bring a reusable bag to bring your stuff home in, and a backpack with anything you might want to offer for a swap. Remember, EVERYONE in every troupe, every style, every area is more than welcome! Please join us! We'd love to see all our shimmying, drumming, and supportive friends there!

UGA Bellydance Club end of the semester Hafla May 2: Call for performers

The UGA Bellydance Club will host our end of the semester hafla on Friday May 2 at Little Kings Club in downtown Athens. Show will start at 9 pm and be followed by fire dance on the patio. Please email me at jaidra@uniqbyjaidra.com if you are interested in performing. Please send performer(s) names, troupe name, song name, song time, and props used as well as any other information that you feel I need to know. We're asking soloists to limit 5 minutes and troupes to limit themselves to 8 minutes. There are a limited number of spaces, and first come, first serve. If you are interested in doing any sort of fire performance, please let me know and we'll discuss safety requirements.

We will be asking for a suggested donation of 2 dollars at the door, half of which will be donated to a local children's charity. We're also hoping to have a drum circle for intermission and maybe after the show, so if you have drums, zills, spoons, or anything else noisy that you would like to bring, the joyful art of making music will be highly encouraged.

I know you're all very busy, but we'd love to have any or all of you down for the weekend!

Here's the scoop on the latest Delirum and Alternacirque happenings:

Tonight (Wednesday 5): Class at the Lexington studio, 711 E. Main St., 7-8 PM. Taxim will be short tonight because we're teaching the ASWAT with a fade, and it will be awesome. Over the past two and a half years I've been in South Carolina, I've received countless emails from all over the state asking about Tribal classes. Though interest in Tribal is growing rapidly, there are only three instructors in the state, and Ashley and I are two of them. Therefore, I am pleased to announce that I will be teaching monthly tribal classes in Greenville, SC. The first one will be Tuesday, March 11th, after which time we'll be holding them on the first Tuesday of every month. I'll be teaching tribal and tribal fusion technique - literally a month's worth over a two hour period. This class is $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Classes will be held at the Carolina Ballet Theatre on Woodruff Road from 7 to 9 PM. Please contact Brandy at bmlw@whiteclassics.com for more information on venue and purchasing classes.

Wednesday, March 12: I will be heading to DC for my father's funeral for a few days, but Dana Salley from Delirium has agreed to teach the Wednesday class for me. Arabic hip twist and the Half Turn and Circle Up. You're in awesome hands.

Ashley Bennett: This workshop will be focused, primarily, on stage presence and fluid motion - with a concentration on arm and hand movements. A certified yoga instructor, Ashley typically begins and ends each workshop with enough yoga to warm up the body to support flexibility, and then slow it down again to prevent aching and soreness for the "morning after." Ashley will offer her workshop on Saturday, March 8th from 1230PM-230PM. Location: Augusta Fencing Club 134 9th St Augusta, GA.

Alchemy: In this workshop, the emphasis will be on floorwork: toning and building the muscles necessary for safe, strong, and controlled floorwork, introducing new movement to your repertoire, and learning how to incorporate floorwork into improvisational performances for the solo or group dynamic. We will also cover the "no-nos", what to consider to keep your floorwork from devolving into a peep show, and how to comport yourself to best display your strength and mastery to the audience. All of this will be presented in the same lighthearted, safe, accepting atmosphere Alchemy is known for in its classes. Hello, all! Here's what's happening in the magical world of Delirium Tribal:

Tonight: Class is on as scheduled in Lexington from 7 to 8 PM. Come on out and continue learning Arabic variations.

Following class, Delirium is heading to the USC percussion studio to rehearse "Ritual" with Colin. Please bring costuming.

Thursday: Delirium is heading to Atlanta for Tribalcon workshop and performance weekend. We are proud to say that we will be performing in the gala on Saturday night. This is an action-packed, star-studded show, and we consider it a great compliment to be invited. The workshops are long-since sold out (unless you can catch somebody selling their pass in the Awalim tribe on tribe.net), but if you're interested in seeing the show, information can be found at www.tribalcon.com.

Friday: Columbia Alternacirque (minus Delirium) will be performing at Art Bar on Friday at 9 PM. Fire and Motion, under Steve's direction, is expanding, and Susan will be there with her mad hooping skills. This is going to be an awesome show, and I'm upset I'm going to miss this.

Saturday, March 1st: Saidi Belles present their annual Belles of the Dance show. Details TBD.

Saturday, March 8th: Delirium Tribal are the featured tribal instructors at the annual Southern Oasis workshops and hafla in Augusta, GA. I will be teaching our signature combos with Delirium at 10 AM, and Ashley will be teaching tribal fusion at 12. There are also bhangra, folk and music classes offered throughout the weekend. Maria (my favorite vendor ever, and not just because she's in Delirium) will be vending. Bipin will vending, too. The hafla, which has just been moved from The Mission to City Club, is always off the hook. If you ever hear us talking about the infamous chocolate fountain, this is THAT hafla. We'll be closing the show. Workshop space is still available at www.alchemydance.com, and we expect plenty of room for everyone at the show.

No class this week. My father died last night.

My father passed away last night after a long battle with stomach cancer. Mom and all of us kids were there with him in the hospital when it happened. Class and rehearsal on Wednesday are suspended for this week, and we will get back together next Wednesday and resume classes. Delirium will make up rehearsal Sunday morning at 10 in Lexington, and Monday evening at 7:30 in Lexington.

For those of you that knew him, a memorial service for Charles Brown is scheduled for Wednesday at the Caughman Harmon funeral home on Old Bush River Road. Viewing is from 1-3, service is at 3. Dad will be buried with full military honors at Arlington Cemetery later in the spring. Anyone wishing to donate in his memory can do so to the American Cancer Society.

Classes returning! Plus I quit my job!

Hello, everyone:

Classes will resume tomorrow, January 30th, at 7:00 PM in the LEXINGTON STUDIO. I know I told some of you 7:30 in the Vista, but as always, we're gerri-rigging in the face of some disaster or other. The Vista CMFA suffered an electrical fire last week after SCE&G changed over to a digital meter. There's no structural damage, but the electrical system is shot in most of the building and limping in the rest. John Whitehead is telling me the expected fix time is April, though we all hope we can go home sooner. So until then, for the sake of consistency, we'll be in the Lexington studio, 711 E. Main St., in the basement of the Old Mill. If anyone needs to carpool from the downtown side, we'll leave from my house in Olympia at 6:30. Please email me for directions to my new house, as we've moved and are no longer in the Duplex of Doom.

Class format is changing a bit. I'll be teaching one class for now (opening others as demand requires), in themed sessions of 6 to 8 weeks. We'll be working more in depth and covering both a basic and intermediate level topics (don't panic, everyone is welcome, including beginners), like moves and their variations, circle ups, cues, leading and following, etc. I'm also going to be switching back and forth between American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion topics, matching the diversity we're now following in Delirium Tribal since we went all cooperative.

For the first 8 weeks, we're going to be working on arabic and arabic hip twist. Anybody who's taken the intermediate class on arabic before knows that there are a gazillion variations to keep us busy for 8 weeks. This should give everyone a good foundation on technique, musculature, arms, how ATS improv works and how to really dig down on a personal level to teach your body how to do things. Sound good? Good.

My pricing system may change soon when I get the details ironed out. For now, we'll stay at a $10 drop in rate, and I will continue honoring class cards that are floating around out there. In future, I would expect the drop in rate to increase, there will be a discounted rate for buying each session. There's a rumor that Ashley and I may honor each others class cards in future, but let us work out the details.

On a personal level, I put in my notice at work last week. With the circus, the museum show, MTV, Tribalcon and Southern Oasis all taking place in the span of about 10 weeks, it suddenly became very obvious to me that I was spending too much time and mental stress on my day job when I should be focusing and pushing my career. We have way too much awesome stuff in the works for me to be squeezing director duties in at 5:00 in the morning. Work is being very excellent about this, and though my official last day is February 8th, I'll be temping at my own job off and on through the end of the month to help them transition. In the meantime, this means I will be relying on teaching and performance income to pay bills. If anyone wants private lessons, traveling classes in the southeast or to host me and/or Delirium in a workshop, now would be an excellent time to email me.

Natalie came in to work and asked if I had checked my email.
"nuh uh. What is it?"
"Well, Ziah asked me for both of our email addresses and I gave them to her. She promptly sent us both an email that I think you should read."
"What is it?!?"
"She needed some more acts for the the TribalCon show and has asked us to come out"

I cried.

'coz I'm like that.

Ashley Bennett continues her tribal fusion solo instruction in Out of the Box II. Ashley is now a full-fledged member of Delirium and Columbia Alternacirque, so she's been working on a lot of neat new stuff.

After attending workshops and performances and hearing people by the tons asking for a hair and makeup workshop, I am finally hearing your pleas. Bring your fake hair and your makeup box, and we'll go through the tried and true Delirium Tribal "warpaint" process together, just in time for our hafla of doom that evening.

We'll be having our hafla of doom starting at 8 PM at Ashley's and my residence. We expect live music, as well as performances by Columbia Alternacirque and Delirium Tribal. Responsible fire performers welcome in the front yard. It's informal, so if you'd like to perform something, bring it along. Our parties get bigger and better each time, and the last one was a blast, so I have no idea what's going to happen this time. Please give me a PM for the address. Bio for River Guerguerian:
River (Paul) Guerguerian was born in 1967 (“the summer of love”) in Montreal, Canada to Armenian/Egyptian/Syrian parents. He began playing music at the age of 8, and at 11, moved to the New York City area, studied with world-renowned masters, and began playing professionally soon after. As a multipercussionist, composer, and educator, he is devoted to the subtle and transformative power of the arts.

In 1989, he received his Bachelor of Music from the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory and graduated with the school’s award for Most Outstanding Percussionist. While living in NYC, he performed and/or recorded with such groups as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, New Music Consort, English Chamber Orchestra, NewBand/Harry Partch Ensemble, Tibetan Singing Bowl Ensemble, Talujon Percussion Ensemble (co-founder), Chuck Berry, Sophie B. Hawkins, Ziggy Marley/Gipsy Kings, and spent five years developing sounds with Grammy and Oscar winning composer Tan Dun, with whom he won a Bessie Award for “Jo Ha Kyu."

He has been living in Asheville, North Carolina, a center for the arts in the southern Appalachian Mountains, since 1999. He is currently performing with the ensemble of Omar Faruk Tekbilek, world famous ney flute master. River is also a well-known regional artist, performing and recording with world music groups, dance troupes, jazz ensembles, pop and rock groups, experimental ensembles, and singer/songwriters. He can be found playing frame drums, drumset, congas, Middle Eastern and African percussion, tabla, gongs, singing bowls, and various found objects.

Guerguerian has performed at International Music Festivals in Berlin, New York, Moscow, Rome, San Francisco, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Barcelona, Athens, Istanbul, and has recorded on over 90 albums and film soundtracks, including the John Cage documentary film, “I Have Nothing to Say and I Am Saying It”. His compositions have been commissioned and performed by chamber ensembles, universities, modern dance companies, and new music festivals throughout the country.

In 1994, River sold all possessions, left civilization, and lived in the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Himalayas where he delivered his daughter, Amba. For five years, he did not play professionally and gathered new information from being immersed in Nature.

His music has evolved using knowledge and indigenous instruments gathered from research and from travels around the planet. He conducts rhythm and sound exploration workshops throughout the country. Guerguerian enjoys sharing the deep, creative, and rhythmic space from which sound originates.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes.

So recently, Delirium did some shrinking, then some morphing, then some sudden rapid expanding.

We bid farewell to company member Catherine Blackwell, who is focusing on her career as a civil engineer. I salute her. VeRonda Haley is also taking an indeterminate leave of absence from the company.

Our apprentice, Erin, has graduated from grad school and is seeking employment out of state. Though we secretly harbor a hope that she sticks around town, we wish her luck and joy, and say that some dance company somewhere, out there, is picking up a dynamite dancer. Julie has given birth to a gorgeous and healthy baby girl, and we hope to see Julie back and working with us at some point in the future.

With so many absences, it was getting difficult to staff our shows as we have in the past. We've been getting a little antsy to branch out into other things--choreography, fusion, solo work, props, etc. We've had a brilliant tribal fusion soloist in Ashley sitting on the sidelines because she didn't do our style. There's been talk circling around here for the longest time of pulling more alternative artists (fire people, circus performers, hoopers, musicians) into a collective (hence the Carolina Tribal Cirque project).

So we held a meeting and have decided to turn Delirium in that direction. Ashley is pseudo joining us as a solo artist, sometimes troupe participant and choreographer. Starting the September Art Bar, we will also be working with a fire performer: Steve, who some of you may remember from the last Hafla of Doom. We'll still be pulling out the ATS/ITS/whatever we are supposed to be calling it now out frequently, but you'll be seeing a lot of choreography, propwork, smaller pieces, solo work, and we hope in the future, integration with fire and other artists. We are super excited at the expanse of creative opportunity this is going to afford us, and how much potential growth we can get.

We're on the lookout for other Columbia area artists, our southeastern guest artists, who might be interested in working with us. Serious inquiries only, please.

I had planned on returning to teaching in the next couple of weeks, but I found out Friday night that my father's chemo isn't really working. It shrunk the tumors in his stomach and his lymph nodes, but it appears he has another, more aggressive cancer spreading through his liver like wildfire. Dad is returning to Johns Hopkins to fight some more, but we're expecting maybe a couple weeks or maybe a month or two.

With that kind of emergency looming close on the horizon, it's hard for me to plan anything, or to hold myself together well, so classes will have to hold off just a while longer while things resolve one way or another. Thank you for the love and support you've been sending.

Wednesday classes suspended. Please read.

Hi guys.

Last Friday my family found out that my father has stomach cancer. Survival rate at five years is only 20%. We don't know how long dad has. We get that Monday. My family and I are devastated. Dad is only 56.

In light of this news, I have to step down from teaching the Wednesday classes for a while. We will have one last class this Wednesday, June 27th. I really hate to do it, and I hate that I'm stranding my beginner and intermediate students, but I can't physically and emotionally carry on with them at the present time. I know how it feels to be on the other end of this, and I'm so, so sorry. With the new fulltime job, the dance company, and a need to be with my family as much as possible, it doesn't really leave me much choice. Something had to give.

I will keep up with the advanced masterclass, rehearsals and performances as much as possible, as I take stock and figure out how all this is going to work. Dance got me through the hurricane, and I plan to keep working on my career and my own dance practice through my new disaster. The out of the box workshop and our party on July 14th is scheduled to go on as planned. I'm also hoping to have frequent workshops to keep everybody learning and continuing on with their dancing.

I'm not sure how long classes will go on hiatus. It may be that I'm going crazy without it and I come back in a month. It may be six months. It may be that I may be able to find a substitute and classes can resume soon. I don't know. I will let everyone know as soon as I do know.

My family and I appreciate all the love and good thoughts and support over the last few days. People have been asking if there's anything they can do, and my best answer for now is carry on as normal and keep us distracted and occupied. I'm going to be moody and in pieces sometimes for a while, and I beg your patience and forgiveness. I've had a rough couple of years.

totally cross-posted... but what do you think about...

doing the "out of the box" workshop on Saturday, July 14th??? If there are too many people who can't make it, maybe we can fanangle something else.

Also... Most of us know that this particular workshop is to help with soloing....I've been thinking more about subject matter covered. I'm afraid it'll turn into more of a seminar. In a two hour workshop, I'm going to try to squish in:

*yoga (duh - I like da yoga)
*delicious drills (yum)
*stage presence (which is what Delirium will be covering in their advanced workshops this month - thank you, Natty)
*traveling (I'm a closet-cabaret-choo-choo-shimmy fan.... also really into gawazee - did I spel that right?)
*gettin' into it (I'll try to work this into a practice without embarassing myself!)
*combos (there are a few that I've strung together for various performances - combos are always nice)

*also... if anyone is really interested in learning how to construct and really fitful (couldn't think of a better word) drum solo, I think I got some good stuff for ya..

uh. Now that I'm looking at everything, this will probably either have to be cut down or stretched into a three-hour shindig.

That's all I've got so far. If anyone else can think of stuff they think I can help them with, let me know. If I don't know, I'll ask Natty and will hopefully have it figured out by then. Hahaha!!

I don't know how much Delirium-hosted-two-hour-workshops cost.... Natalie can get with us about that, and also confirm the date.

Again, I ask if anyone really wants to make the workshop, but the 14th is no good, let us know and I'll see what I can do.

I'm really sorry to rattle on like this, but Natalie and I have really gotten into the whole after-event-house-party-throwdown thing, If you're interested in performing at a mini-hafla, our "Duplex of Doom" is well-equipped. And if anyone needs to camp for the night, we've probably got room for you, too.

This'll be FUN!

Out of the Box...

Just thought I'd give a heads up for June. The date is not set, but I will be teaching a workshop for Delirium Tribal called "Out of the Box." Haven't got the lesson plan down yet - but it's supposed to aid in solo work. If you're interested, I'd like to hear from you about what you want out of the soloist workshop from me. So far, i think we will review stage presence and various little combos to add to you bag of tricks. So... fess up - what'll it be?

Also, this Saturday, remember we've got Bastet up for a workshop - hosted by Delirium's mama, Natalie Brown. That night, Nat and I will be hostessing a sort of hafla/throwdown at the Bellydance Duplex of DOOM! (aka our house). Foods, Drinks - whatever goes. Kids are welcome. Hello Delish Delirium Ladies :-)~

Raquy and her Cavemen will be in Charleston next Monday for a drum workshop and show. Any of you ladies ever wanted to visit Charleston and see Raquy at the same time???

I know it's a Monday and it makes it really difficult for most but I just thought I'd throw it out there! And the show is only $3! The workshop is $20 and includes free show ticket.

I have crash space and will even try to make grits y'all even though I'm from the Bronx....

Delerium: Come up and Play at Morocco

So, can you to come up in June?
many of the BMundi gals will be gone, and those of us hosting the workshop want to have some convivial companions to play with!
I'd be glad to save you a performance slot so we can have some highcaliber ATS in the show: Morocco transcends any one genre of the dance, but I had her teach the true Roma and Tunisian for the Tribally-inclined folks.
This event will be held where we had Tribal:Pura - the beautiful JCC in Asheville - light, airy and convenient. It is the best venue we have found in town yet to showcase this powerhouse of original information.
If you can play...let me know!

Melissa from the fabulous Middle Eastern band Ishtar (Pittsburgh, PA) writes:
Ishtar is heading south of the Mason Dixon line to be special guests at Jalsah Charleston! We are excited to get to jam with you folks!

Me and my fellow Ishtar band members (Jeff, Beth and Mark) will be conducting a 2 hour Middle Eastern Ensemble Workshop. All drummers and all instrumentalists are welcome. Participants do not need to play a Middle Eastern instrument to take this workshop. Learn basic drum rhythms, how the rhythms fit the songs, and how to change rhythms within the songs. Learn basic makams (modes), easy to play Middle Eastern melodies, and taksim (soloing) skills. All participants will learn how to take cues from a band leader and to be a part of the tapestry of the song. Attendees of the workshop will be invited to sit in and play together at the Jalsah. Sheet music, guitar tabalature and drum notation will be available for sale or to borrow. Advance copies can be purchased at www.dorku.com.

This workshop is a mere $10.00 per person and is recommended for the drummers and melody instrumentalists that plan on attending the Jalsah that night. What a bargain!

Jalsah Charleston, a live Middle Eastern Music and dance event where everyone can participate! To cover expenses, admission is $5.00. Delish foods included!

Bring your hipscarf, drum, guitar, clarinet, tuba, flute, sax, ukelele, whatever you got, and let's dance and make Middle Eastern music all night! Community participation is what it is all about!!

Advance music is available thru www.dorku.com: practice tracks, guitar tab, maqam lists and sheet music.

Musicians: a PA system will be provided, please bring your own patch cables and any extra cables to help out a fellow musician.

Hey, guys! We finally have all the details ironed out for the Bastet Tribal Fan workshop. If you've not seen this woman perform, do. She has the best fan skills I've ever seen. Period. Here are the details.

-Saturday, April 7th, from 12-2 PM.

-Lexington CDE studio, 711 Main Street (highway one), Lexington, SC in the basement of the Old Mill.

-Cost is $35. You can pay cash or check at the door, and I will have online registration with paypal up at www.nataliebrown.net this evening. Sorry, since this is an outside guest instructor, I can't accept bulk class cards for this workshop.

-You will need two fans for this workshop. Bastet is taking orders for several different affordable pairs; you can find ordering instructions on her tribe at http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet.
