Heeey everyone!

I'm trying to build a tank table for a chill out space at a party and for burning man....but the most furniture building I have ever done is putting together some Ikea stuff. I have friends with power drills/tools n things, but I'm kind of not sure if my design is going to work. I was just wonderin if someone could check it out and let me know if something looks horribly wrong. One of the most important things about this is that it has to be relatively easy to move and travel with.
The idea is to make a narrow but long and tall table with a border hanging over....imagine a bar counter...so instead of having legs its kind of a rectangular box. I was thinking something like 70 inch L, 12 inch W, and 36 inch H. I was gonna use 1 inch thick plywood for this part. And then I was going tt use 2 inch thick wood for the border, which is going to hang over the edge 8 inches on all sides. And for the tank part...I was basically going to make a box out of 1/4 thick plywood 68 inch L, 10 inch W, and 10 inch H...cover it with water tight coating. Thats where the water goes.
So the tank would be attached to the border, so I could just set it inside the base. So then when I traveled with it, I would just have the four pieces making up the base, and then the tank and the border would be one piece.
So then I wanted to figure out how much water would be needed, and it turns out that 7000 cubic inches is like 78 gallons of water which is about 650 pounds!!!
Did I calculate that wrong>?
Will plywood even hold that much weight>?
Am I even going in the right direction>?

I've never worked with plastics before, have gone to Taps and chatted with their staff -- Taps staff are incredibly friendly/helpful, btw, every time I've been there -- and I have some vague idea of how to do this, eventually, after much mussing around learning to work with these materials.

(The thing I want to make is a larger 3-D version of one of the creatures drawn by Haeckel: http://caliban.mpiz-koeln.mpg.de/~stueber/haeckel/radiolarien/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Haeckel_Stephoidea.jpg , haven't settled on one yet. I'm in no hurry and I figure something this complex will be take many months to get going and completed, especially knowing the very little I know right now.)

Anyway, my question to y'all: Is there anyone here who has worked with plastics before and wouldn't mind me poking with questions as they come up?
Sooo...im working on a little art project making some party deco....Im making a vine with trippy geometricy kinda flowers on it, made out of layers of paper on top of each other painted black light reactive colors. Kinda simple but really neat looking I think...anyways...
My idea was to have each flower individually illuminated from the center. I was thinking of getting flourescent christmas lights and popping the flowers on top of each light....and a friend of mine assured me that they exist. Of course, I believed him and after further internet research.....couldnt find anything even close online. So now im thinking that I am just going to get some LED lights and see if I could switch the bulbs...but I cant really find tiny black light bulbs online....
Anyone know an online store or place in sf/bay area where I could find something like that?

My original post on BM tribe.

Just a thought.....

Many of our cities currently have waste treatment plants that are off-gassing a methane product. If we could find a way to place this product into 100 pound propane cylinders we would have our frame producing product. There are some safety issues associated with this product that I haven't full researched.... but it would be a way to burn something that most city don't ever harvest.....

These off-gassing torches run 24/7 356 days a year......

The gas would be burning any way. Why not use it for art?

I'm still planning to build something on fire this year, I'm just going to try to rethink my design a bit more for efficiency.

When I think of green, I think of giving something a new life that might have ended up in a land fill......

Dusty's reply....

Wow, I like that idea. Surely there's been work done in harnessing methane.
reply to this post

lily's reply....

also good about this idea, methane, like CO2, is a greenhouse gas, but it is a much nastier one. by burning the methane, you actually turn it into CO2 and water...and while releasing CO2 is always thought to be a bad thing, its way better than it jsut being released on its own like it would be otherwise
reply to this post

MY reply (JMF )

It's not being released on it's own in most cities in the US It is being burn by as off-gassing torch, go check out you local water treatment plant.

What would be the diffrence if you harnessed it and controlled it? I may not be improving the enviroment but I'm not hurting it. It's really more a wash.....
reply to this post

lily

well its pretty hard to improve levels of CO2 in the atmosphere at this point...theres so much of it already,a nd its increasing at pretty alarming rates...but this is a really good way to keep from contributing to it:) especailly if itsjust going to be burned anyway, for no good reason

My Reply (JMF )
What can we do to counteract what we burnToday, 12:59 PM
My issue will be transportation of the product and then getting it back into a usable state that will fill my fuel line.... but the upside is the fuel will be free.... The city has been trying to get me to make permanent fire installations at these location because they sit right next to a major city park......

I feel a plan coming on........ or a lot more research….. :-)

Heey everyone, my name's Yuliya and uhh yeah. I just joined the tribe and I wanted to say hello and share some thoughts for next years burning man, and hopefully get some advice...
So, I had an idea for an art project that I wanted to make this year, but since it was my first year I was a little hesitant...well...a lot hesitant and nothing got done. This was actually probably for the better because I think that this idea fits really well with the new theme. So well its kind of creepy....

So..I wanted to make a tree, roughly 20-25 foot tall. I wanted the tree to be made from wire of different thicknesses, that would twirl and weave together for the trunk, and then seperate into individual twirly branches. I would also make the roots of the tree on top of the ground, and have them spread out enough to keep my tree stable and stuck in the ground. And I thought it would be a nice idea to have boxes of paper leaves...well maybe more like cardstock or something...and people could stop by and make a leaf to put on the tree.

this is going to be the first big art project that I have ever made, so I REAAALLLY could use help/advice from all you all more experianced people...some questions that I have are...sorry if some of them are kind of basic/stupid but uhhh I primarily paint so I dont know too much about metals..
in terms of wire and materials, how do I know what is recycalabe and where should I look for materials?
Is there some sort of space that I can work in sf for free or rent for real cheap?
should I put the whole thing together and bring it out in one piece or should I make a couple major pieces and then put it together on site>?

if any of you guys live in sf and wouldnt mind meeting up to chat someplace that would be cool too.
thanks, peace and love,
Y

I want you all to vote for the best playa art of 2006, and the winner will receive $226.23. You need to post a review, a photo and a contact for the artist here. I will immensely enjoy looking at the photos, reading the reviews and having a vicarious and hopefully epiphanific Burn.

Then in some quasi-democratic , semi-arithmetic, hemi-neurologic process I will evaluate the photos, quantity of buzz, and quality of comment, apply a secret algorithm, and mail a giant check (along with a tiny and negotiable one) to the winner. Then I will wash my hands of the BORG2.
spontaneously to a community of over 25,000 people reaching as far as maybe a hundred thousand. It all started with one man’s artwork. The idea that “Any person can be inspired to express themselves for any reason known or unknown, and need not wait for any special time or place to do it.”

The impact of the Burning Man experience has been so profound that whole cultures have formed around it. From culture jammers, to spectacle architects, to large-scale artist, to rave cultures, to ritual enthusiast to everything in-between. This culture pushes the limits of Burning Man and has led to people banding together nation-wide to put on their own events, in attempt to rekindle that magic feeling that being part of this community promotes.

I have one comment about this....... maybe!

Burningman (whatever it’s origins) is for many, a week long dessert party where people cut loose, dance, rave, drink, meditate, sleep, stay up, drive art cars, ride bikes, meet people, have sex, make art, do drugs, look at art, and battle over what Burningman is about. You Pay several hundred dollars for the privilege of taking your great ideas there and having them blend into the experience that is Black Rock City. Many people forget, great art, sex and community existed way before Burningman. But people love their fandom and Burningman is proof that storytelling and belief still rule much of our modern world.

Still, this event has some unique qualities to it. An allergy to vending and commercial advertising, and camping and leave no trace ethic, a bicycle city, is a clothing optional event and the participant to cop ratio in favor of participates. It also still tends to be a place where no one will look at you funny for being an outrageous version of yourself, in fact you might get encouraged to do so. So many artist believe everyone should go and have a great time because you can meet many great people who make really great art and work on really great projects in and around art. Some people focus on the community building that happens and the many life long friendships and memories of working on large social projects is profound. But these things are found in the peace corps, the military and any community organization that is really bigger than the sum of it’s participants. But this desert festival is really is a place where great artworks are installed and intended to be found out in that dessert. That is unique to BRC. Probably the biggest non commercial modern art fest in the world. For many, it’s worth the heat, the dust and the incredible pricetag.

Profound life change? Maybe, but mostly, enjoy the freedom, enjoy other people’s art, and enjoy this opportunity to experience what it means to make your own art. Take it out into the dessert and have it interact with people who expect it. The politics can never change the fact that it is art that made this event possible, and it is only the art that makes it unpredictable year after year.

Witness it if you can.
Help make it if you dare.
Celebrate it everywhere.

“The mission of the BRAF is to support and promote community-based interactive art.”

Everybody says this, but the BRAF has three things that most 501 organizations do not.
1~ A giant pool of heavy caliber public artist.
2~ Piggybacked popularity that makes their organizers very influential in city politics.
3~ Money.
Where every other hippy do gooder, pro-artist, non profit is struggling, the BRAF steps in like a millionaire with a newfound hobby. Thankfully, the theory underlining this steamboat might be a bit pampas, but it is still incredibly sound.
“Artist are typically poorly educated in the development of collaborative strategies and techniques for artistic production and non-institutional audience development. The BRAF facilitates an opportunity for the evolution of such an education, which will be increasingly necessary as we move from a society based on institutional hierarchies toward a society based on informal project-driven networks. The primary goal of the BRAF is to promote a revival of art’s culture-bearing and connective function by removing art from its context in the marketplace and reintegrate it into communal settings. The BRAF works through Artist Grants, Community development, exhibitions, Educational outreach and Career Development. Although the BRAF was founded by several partners who produce Burningman, the BRAF aims to establish a completely separate identity and organization for it’s purposes.”
Can you imagine what it would mean if the BRAF succeeded? Ok so these guys might be the feel-good project of a bunch of artist-gone-corporate promoters, but still, they posses the position and resources to actually do some good for artist. At some level they have to maintain an adherence to these goals. If renegade artist started spending just a fraction of their time to ensure the same mistakes made with the Burningman Festival were not repeated in the foundation, there could be some reward. An overnight reintroduction of public art into the mass-culture that comes without a commerce connection? The really stunner is the BRAF is already working. With the underlay of David Best temple in Marine, the Blue Greenway sculptures and Pepe’s sculpture in Golden Gate park, Burningman Art is permeating the public.

The only question is; Are they people running it smart enough to ensure it works for everyone? This can’t happen unless people off the playa get involved to make it so.

A large-scale maze art exhibit is being deconstructed, and the materials are up for grabs. We have close to 100 4 ft. x 8ft sheets of plywood, tons of 2x4's and other miscellaneous beams, panels and plexi sheets. Some of the pieces may have painting on them. Most of the stuff can be used for building, if not burning. We will be deconstructing the exhibit this weekend, and we are telling anyone who is interested to stop by the church fine arts building up at UNR anytime between 10 am and 6pm on Sunday the 13th. Everything must be gone before the end of the day. There is a metered lot in front of the building, right off of virginia st. If you come in those doors, and make a left you will see the gallery where we are working. You can take as much as you can haul. Send me an email if you have any questions. Thanks.
http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/marina/marinaexp/adventplgd.html
Lia Sutton wrote a booklet as a part of her senior independent research project, Kinderparadijs (Children's Paradise): Advancing the Adventure Playground Movement.
It is an idea that is beginning to spread like wild fire.

“We made a children's world in the city and in the country. Imagine, a place that provides all that, in the middle of a city. Here you go, hammers, saws, nails, wood, tires, rope, cloth, whatever you can find. Make it yours. You can change this playground right here, right now. You don't have to make an appointment. You can walk or ride your bike, and there are people here to help and encourage you. What if you had that space? What if every child had that space?”

Adventure Playgrounds, like the one in Berkeley are easily set up into the Parks and Recreation Dept of any city. With a strong clear leader, and a good working truck to haul things, most city governments can easy afford the space and overhead to build a creative playspace. We could build one in every city. Imagine the potential for changing the way children are exposed to art if their experience is taken out of the classroom and into the outdoors with mandatory creativity. Breathtaking. Adventure playgrounds are spreading across the world in Canada, Germany, Japan, Switerland, UK and here in my California state ( Berkeley, Huntington Beach, and Irvine).

So where can adults find this same inspiration? So far, only in places like the Crucible, private artist studios and community art centers. Public reuse art is somewhat illegal without designated space. Just ask the drift wood sculptors of the East Bay (California).

Still there is a growing network of creative reuse projects and businesses that are slowly changing the way public and private arts permeate our brave new art world.

SCRAP
scrap-sf.org/links.htm
Scrap is a creative reuse center, store and workshop space founded in 1976 in San Francisco, California. Donations of re-usable materials such as textiles, paper, jewelry findings, wood, buttons and plastics are collected from businesses, institutions and individuals and distributed to art and educational groups.
By breathing new life into old objects, SCRAP reduces the amount of waste going to crowded landfills. By offering low cost art and re-use workshops and providing schools and organizations with badly needed art supplies, SCRAP stimulates creativity and environmental awareness.
Manufacturers save money on their disposal costs and receive tax benefits. Artists transform SCRAP materials into sculptures, paintings, and other masterpieces. Children and adults learn how to "REDUCE, RE-USE AND RECYCLE." Anyone can contribute by donating clean, reusable materials that might otherwise be thrown away.

And others:
www.east-bay-depot.org
www.communitycyclingcenter.org/bikeart.html
But the mother of all list is on this page. http://www.recycle.net/trade/index.html

Chances are you can find a creative reuse center in you area that can not only help you make are cheaper than you do now, but can provide you with endless medium inspiration.

If these things don’t exist in your town, maybe you should consider starting one.

"The world needs art. Art is the best way to communicate the sign of the times, the madness of the times, explain our ongoing reality. Art has always been the leader of the revolution." Tyler Hanson

For some, "art" can be a terrifying word. Art is that stuff that hangs in galleries and museums, yes? The stuff that adorns the walls in waiting rooms and lobbies, right? Art is for the inside, not the outside. "Art Outside is a model of how to reinvent the art show by taking art and placing it outside of its normal context, its normal box," says Hanson.

Hanson's not exaggerating. A wood called the Enchanted forest (Austin Texas) is filled with 120 plots, each occupied by a different visual artist or group of artists. They work in mixed media, multimedia, photography, acrylics, pottery, oils, and pen and ink. One artist draws only on the pages of the New York Times; another makes exquisite pottery. They have folks working in embroidery, watercolor, Prismacolor, wire art, and sculpture. They have collage, decoupage, stained glass, etching, and jewelry. They have printmakers, illustrators, costumers, and installations, art you can enter into and be surrounded by.
And that's only the beginning. They have a dozen children's workshops and, on weekend afternoons, bunches of performances for kids, including juggling, unicycling, and a drum class. In the evenings they have stuff for grownups, with more than 30 bands rotating in and out, playing on a stage overlooking the creek. "Plus, we have strolling bands like the Sour Mash Hug Band or the International Troubadours or the Dolomites," says Hanson. "We have dance performances. We have a troupe called RAD; they do spoken-word dance performance. We have a group called Dingus Kahn; they're in cocoons dancing, and we project onto them at night. We have comedians, spoken-word artists, and slam poets. We're going to have a Poet's Cafe with Thom the World Poet. We have the Baruzaland Shadow Puppet Theater every night at midnight with a harp player and a live band.

Given the mere pittance they're charging at the gate ($5 during the day and $10 at night. Full weekend access, passes can be purchased for $15), they can't be raking in much dough. So why the massive undertaking? "Because we need it," says Hanson. "The world needs art. Art is the best way to communicate the sign of the times, the madness of the times, explain our ongoing reality. Art has always been the leader of the revolution."

Art Outside is no new concept, but more than just a group of artist getting attention by doing something formally different, Art outside has become a artists idea. A concept of activities that serve values between artist, artwork and audience. Instead of promoting the elitist communities so easily found among both fine formal artist and fine renegade artist, art outside takes a much more, “meet them on their own ground” approach to the public.

Bringing art into the lives of the public reaches into the lame public non-offensive park sculptures like tile benches and organic fountains but it also makes for more engageing work as well.
San Francisco finally getting a good name in art again in ways that have noting to do with Burningman.

From Christo, to Smithson to the graffiti artist who still make cities like San Francisco have a anti-graffiti Budget of over 3 million a year, artist who take art out of normal settings are also taking art into the hands of the people who avoid traditional settings. This begs the question:

“Is the role between art and society better served when people journey to see art, or when artist make art to journey into the people?

THE CRUCIBLE
1260 7th Street, Oakland CA 94607

“The Crucible is an arts education center that fosters the collaboration of art, industry and community. Through training in the fine and industrial arts, The Crucible promotes creative expression, reuse of materials and innovative design while serving as an accessible arts venue for the public. The Crucible is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Founded in 1999 by a small group of artists, The Crucible is the Bay Area's only nonprofit sculpture studio, educational foundry and metal fabrication shop offering classes in fine and industrial arts. From cast iron to neon, and from large-scale public art to the most precise kinetic sculpture, The Crucible is fast becoming the best-equipped public industry & arts education facility on the West Coast.
The vision of The Crucible is to be one of the premiere art centers in the country: a place where art thrives, is accessible, and inspires everyone in their everyday lives. It is a place where forges roar, sparks fly, glass bends, molten metals fuse and pour, clay and cement take on form, neon glows, and creativity explodes!”

You’ve seen them in the SF Weekly, SF Chronicle, Oakland Tribune and now the New York Times. The Crucible is fast becoming a model engagement of arts and community. Through event shootings, building permit problems, staff inconsistencies, volunteer disorder and the stigma of sharing Burningman populations, somehow this idea has managed to endure. Having two boards (Emeritus Advisory Board & Board of Directors) plus an actual faculty, teams of class staff, facilities staff, events staff, office staff and some rather obscure equipment technicians, process experts and advisory orbiters, the crucible makes for one in a thousand organization that can operate without turning little more than a dime. Normally this kind of success can be attributed to the willpower or smarts of a single indivual, but successes and failures of the Crucible have come in all manner of shapes sizes and personas.
The crucible is not only re-inventing how community art centers can be successful by specializing in entertaining mediums (like metal casting, welding and fire spinning) they are also help re-defining the relationships local artist have with each other. Through inviting the general public to display works in their festivals, group shows and events, more artist are exploring alternatives to traditional galleries and finding new ways of reaching the public. Give it a few years and some smart cookies might realize that well accepted projects like the Crucible are the golden key to re-writing legislature that makes life better for artist. More arts education support, more art awareness, more art definitions and more acceptance for new and inventive ideas. the Crucible may have it’s problem’s like any other project, but it is one that at least deserves it’s model studied by anyone who calls themselves a working artist.
Next on their platter ~“The Crucible Bio-Diesel Program” and “The Crucible Solar” Dismiss them? The public won’t be any time soon.

CACOPHONY SOCIETY
http://www.cacophony.org
In the early days of the 20th century, a small group of artist got together and started a idea movement they called lots of names, but they themselves were called “Futurist”. They wrote manifestos proclaiming concepts of a new world and promoted the destruction of the old one. They loved press exposure and incited events for mere spectacle and attention. They comprised themselves of musicians, sculptors, painters, writers, playwrights, photographers and even politicians. They were intent on not only carving a name for themselves but also sincerely trying to change the world. They are most often mis-associated with creating the footsteps of Socialism because Marx himself read these antics with a lot of interest. Upon closer inspection it was clear he never understood what the Futurist were up to. They never cared to agree on anything especial a single vision of the world. They were simply driven to shake things up. Look at the world in a new smart way and force others to pay attention to the death of their dogma.
Jump a hundred years and the very same inclination that made the futurist hop in a car one night and attempt (unsuccessfully) to “Burn down the Louve” brings a legion of subversives behaviors. Many of these people find each other. Regardless of it’s origins, Cacophony Society can be defined as those people who are being officially subversive, only at this very moment. It’s members come and go without any formality whatsoever. In their wake is a trail of “experiences beyond the pale of mainstream society through subversion, pranks, art, fringe explorations and meaningless madness.”
("YOU MAY ALREADY BE A MEMBER!")
The Cacophony Society is a randomly gathered network of individuals united in the pursuit of whatever seems right at the time. A true pact of situationalism more active than passive. “Cacophony is very nebulous, very loosely defined. Membership is unconscious. By maintaining this fluidity, we have be able to slip out of some problematic situations, make entertainingly hyperbolic claims, and disavow responsibility for specific naughty acts.” The activities found under this forum generally fall into two main categories:
GUERRILLA THEATER & PUBLIC SPECTACLES
“These events are usually small usually involve costumes. Include facetious protest marches, human entrants attempting to enter dog shows costumed as dogs, or clowns making their way into an office building pretending to look for their party gig. These are the events the media likes covering. Whether or not they draw attendees, the events raise the general level of awareness and interest in what we're doing.”

PRANKS, HOAXES, CULTURE JAMMING
“The creation and deployment of outrageous, unsettling material. False flyers, and tracts, billboard alterations, toasters glued to walls, bodies outlined in chalk on sidewalks, placement on shelves of bogus products "cement cuddlers." and booths offering services such as free casts for unbroken arms. Involves more work than the costumed street theater because slick presentations are needed to really deceive the public. Lots of talk generally about these more difficult events; follow through harder. Often carried out in solitude or quick nocturnal hits. Fear factor plus laborious preparation makes these the hardest events to pull off, those restricted to the dedicated few.”

Why would anyone participate in these activities or anti activities? Once again, we are forced to look at the theories that digest the values, ideas and character of such structures. In this case, I would attribute this application of creativity to Hunter S Thompson, but that would be ignoring the fact that Cacophony in some form or another has been around since at least the beginning of written history. The Trojan horse was not just a cleaver military maneuver that made people think differently, it was also funny.

We graffittied very simply sayings all over the place and then watched to see if the spread of those ideas would start to become evident in the works of others. writtings, art shows, music etc. It was fun but more entertaining than profound.
Five years ago I started again, only this time on the net. And this time with the intent to help make life a bit better for artist. The idea of "Art as Creative Expression" is no new concept but rarley used in the vocabulary of the public. I just wanted to help the idea along.
Now it is spreading like wild fire. After years of promoting this idea in art schools, public debates, community art projects and to every person I can, the last two years have started to reflect "Art as Creative Expression" in the literature of others. A real shift of thinking about art as a commdity to art as communication is slowly growing.
I would love to use this tactic again, but this time to shift the public idea about the relationship between artist and opportunity. The idea of art that is immediate and public. Thus the seeds of creating TAZ can start the long process of becomming leagal. Free expression, the right to peacbly assemble and art can grow more understood and become not only more acceptable but more protected by law. after that, maybe even some legitament ecouragement and support.
To do this aidea campaign like
"free art"
"Freedom art"
"Freedom of art"
"Freedom of speeh and art"
"Immediate art"
"Immediate Cultural Expression"
"protected creative expression"
"Temporary Expression Zone"

I don't know. None of them seem very catchy to me.
Radical self expression doesn't work cuase it assosiates hippy stuff.
There has got to be a phrase that can be used to infect even the snotty art peeps.
An undeniable progress. One that makes the person look like an asshloe for not supporting.

The art world is shifting. Not in the slow way it has for the past 20,000 years. Immediate global access to information about cultures, philosophies, news and educational strategies is starting to permeate the understandings of our culture. It is visible in the vocabulary the world is beginning to use about art. More and more people understand art less as a commodity and more of a communication behavior. More and more people are recognizing the many things they do that make what they do art. The new generations are becoming less the optimist and more the pragmatic. More and more the hippy wish wash of blind acceptance is being replaced with sound consideration of better alternatives. Artist are using better fuels that feed new ideas into our lives. Artist are carving the patterns for the next cultural climax. Art is not dead. In many ways, it is just beginning.
Society has always looked to artist to fuel it’s citizens with the means to envision it’s future, its goals, its rewards. How do you sell the idea of a king? Find someone who can send a message to the people of his profound position using elaborate clothing, fine crafted jewels upon his head and just the right trumpets to announce his very presence. Find someone who can build a palace that will astound all who view it so there be no mistake, the most important person lives here. Paint flags with symbols of prestige and find a system of organized government that makes people see easily their part in it. A tribal leader with a special headdress. A religion with images of gods and ritual meaning. Someone has to make all these ideas digestible, profound and trustworthy. From designing the pyramids to composing the imperial symphonies to painting the propaganda posters to writing the nightly news, artist have been employed to help shape the world. Now it seems, they may have taken to shaping it themselves, without employment. This time artist have no bosses but their own. What is their vision for the future today? Well lets take a look.
Art for art’s sake is no new idea to artist. Pop Culture has never really taken to the idea in the past. To much commerce probably. It’s difficult to disassociate money from everything when everything noticed cost something. But in the last twenty years people have again started noticing things that can not be bought. Not the morality things that our forefathers would surly accuse of forgetting. It is things like moments that don’t have words for them. Ideas that have no exploitation in them. Experiences that are harmless yet incredible. Victimless crimes of expression. Means of connecting with others that make no sense. Ways of looking at ourselves that have never been learned in any school. Are we talking about chaos art, graffiti or performance improve? Or are these things just the tip of a growing iceberg? Better get your snow shoes on.
“The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy, Poetic Terrorism” By Hakim Bay is one very influential work intended for public domain. Most often interpreted to be a guidebook for illegal dance parties, Hakim’s work has managed to permeate the understandings of many artist and art collectives. People who take the time to digest this work (which does require an effort of heavy consideration) are left with many alternatives to artistic goal setting, value associations, definition understandings and neo-culture awareness. This document of ideas covers topics ranging from “Art Sabotage”, “Chaos Myths", “Nietzsche” to “Pirate Utopias". These writings have already influenced thousands of projects and behaviors ranging from performance arts to desert art festivals sine the mid 8o's.
Maybe the most important contribution to the future is the manner in which this document is available. Hakim Bay offers it to the public in a way that has sparked many to reconsider the values and reasons behind public access, unnecessary copyrighting and social habits of information. It is an Autonomedia document with a Anti-copyright (1985, 1991)and may be freely pirated & quoted with only a request that you inform the author & publisher. Give it some time and consideration at at least you will know what is pushing some of the work of our future.

Stay tuned for issue 2
oxo

I met a lot of great people and had a lot a fun. More importantly, from that project, some really awesome ideas sprang forth and some really incredible work was done for it. The Democratic Art Movement is a selction of some of those great ideas for public use. This movement is here to empower artist by providing access to sucessful ideas.
There is no ownership of these ideas. There is no monotary profiteering. No councils, authorities or forms to fill out. It is an anti-burocratic, ego, self-promotion movement. It is hear to spread some great ideas into the public by choice.
So welcome to a informal gruop of people who promote thes ideas many of the ideas found here. They include at least:

Voting software for use in democratic art projects
Alternative and successful art funding programs.
Public art school instruction
Renegade art support and information
