I'm in the process of redefining my understanding of trance.
Succinctly, trance is a repetition of cognitive events/thoughts that result in a specific state of consciousness that disables certain cognitive functions. Gurdjieff realised that most of us are in trance states most of the time.
One of the most powerful control mechanisms available to those elements of governement that wish to use it is the induction of mass trance... fear trance... the them out there trance... terrorism trance... these are clear hypnotic trances (internal cognitive repetition mainained and sustained by the hypnotist) that result in a disabling of volition and critical judgement.

Re: Societal Control Trances
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 4:27 AMthe pathological trances tend also to be addictive and impoverishing... ask yourself... how many people do you know in the grip of the muslim terrorist trance who have a life affirming, world engaging, rich experience of life? The trances we adopt choose what we experience and what we do not (that's why trance can be so useful... a trance that places my experience of pain out of consciousness can be damned useful when I have a toothache... but only when I'm in control of choosing my trances)
