I sell custom-made tribal bellydance clothing & accessories, specializing in the plus-size genre, and in addition to my tribe http://tribes.tribe.net/belliphat , we also have an Etsy store that's been up since February: http://belliphat.etsy.com I am not very happy with my photos of my items, and I fear that they are actually hindering my sales. I take all of the pictures myself, as I can't afford to hire someone else to do it -- and I generally feel that they (a) aren't very eye-catching, and (b) don't really capture how beautiful these items are in person. They look rather drab in the photos compared to how lush they look in person.

Since I don't have the funds to hire a professional photographer (the catch-22 of being a start-up), does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to make my photos more interesting, lush & appealing - while still conveying all of the information about the items that I need to?

Any help given would be truly appreciated. Thanks!

This is a hand made costume. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well.The bra will fit a 36-38 B/C. This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist class recitals, parties, Goth night, belly fusion, photos, and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume.

The bra will fit a 36-38 B/C. The bra cups are covered in a blue velvet panne' fabric. The bra is trimmed in a brown gimp trim about an inch wide, with a navy blue border. Beneath the trim is a belled and coined chain. At the center of the bra is an O-ring with a chain with bells attached. The side panels and the straps are made from the same fabric that covers the bra cups. The bra ties across the back kris- cross with D-rings. the bra straps are 48 inches long.

The belt is cover in the same fabric as the bra.This belt will fit a M-L(about up to a 14 in pant size and can be shortened) . The belt also has also has the same brown trim with the navy blue border. The belt is 37 inches long not including the tie ends. The tie ends are 18 inches long. The belt can be shortened if needed before it is shipped.The belt also has 3 Afghani pendants on it . 2 small silver ones and one large multi colored one at the center in the back. The ribbon fringe is made up of various yarns, lace, gimp trim and ribbon in various colors of blues and browns. On each side of the belt is there are silver belled and coined chain for sound and movement.
As stated before this is a one of a kind of original piece of wearable art
This costume has a real elegant flare to it moves very well

Website has been given a Facelift! things have been moved, added and removed from all over the place! Working on getting a darker fusion of styles in great fabrics and at great prices! Wanting to cater to the gothic/pirate/fusion goddess in all of us!

I have removed "basic" harem type pants, only offering my saloon pantaloons for now.
I cannot compete with sweatshop labor in dying processes so I have taken the option for custom dyes from my 25 yard skirt page. I may do one or two every once in a while, but alas, it isnt worth my sanity for items to not come out the way that I wanted them to, and to not be able to give my customers the highest in customer service in this aspect.

I Have perfected my corset underbust vest! I will be working on a "full" corset style, but for now, I have my hands full with these. I will have 4 "regular" sizes Small, medium, large and x-large (please see sizing on my website).
I will be offering pre-made fun fabric corset vests on my Etsy.com website creationsbyangelia.etsy.com but that will be in the next week or so, so that I have time to get some sewing done!

I am also going to be offering some premade pantaloons! will be adding some fun touches to them, in fun colors!

Ghawazee coats have been revamped, and look for new pictures of my new design in the next week or so, as I am still sewing it! (I've been busy!!)
There will be sheer and opaque coats offered!

I am currently working on a design for a ghawazee type top that has ties in the front, to be worn UNDER a vest or bra! perfect for showing a bit of that belly, or covering it up!

Mesh body covers are still available! I have even more access to mesh fabrics now! so many fun colors!

Also will be adding some "shrug" type tops, ones that just cover the arms and back, with a little at the front of the arm to keep it from being tooo strange looking. I have some great fabrics in stock for these! quite excited about them!

So... Lots of new things! Lots of fun Ideas!

PLEASE, remember that I can do almost anything in any size for anyone! If you see it, and cant find it in your size, I can most likely do it for you! I enjoy the challenge!!!

I'm looking for the jewelry piece that goes from ear to nose, preferably non-pierced. I believe they're called Nath(es)?

The few I've seen have gigantic danglies hanging off the nose ring, which I'm not crazy about. I've seen pictures of them without that, on dancers, but so far I've found nothing like that for sale.

so I'm looking to make my OWN hip wraps, both velvet and chiffon. You know the ones right? several layers of costume coins apparently crocheted or strung onto cotton thread...I hope I am being clear. Can I find this stuff ready to attatch to fabric? I hate paying 30+ dollars for hip wraps that arent quite "me", or that fall apart because I forget to not sit on them...LOL

every once in a while there's that customer that just can't seem to stick with one choice. i'm ready to pull my hair out over this one lady that has changed her mind about 7 times, sometimes it just doesn't seem worth the time i spend responding to emails, putting skirts aside only to have her change her mind again, only this time she picked a fabric that's no longer in stock. i haven't even gotten back to her about this yet cause i'm afraid of how much longer it will drag along for... aghhhhhhhhhh!!!!

I'm Akasha Afsana, a Minneapolis-based bellydancer and budding entreprenuer. I am in the process of starting up my business, DanZ PantZ, with a website soon to be up and running. I started out by making custom orders for local dancers. Now I hope to make my passion my livelihood!

Zlip-ons! Elastic-less zill mufflers

After about a year of playing around with different designs I came up with one that I think works very well. I call them Zlip-ons! They are elastic-less zill mufflers. They slip right on and stay put. And you don't have to worry about any elastic needing to be replaced.
The colors I have right now are turquoise, purple, green, white, and red. If you'd like a different color just let me know. I've posted a picture in the group.

Dancing for Darfur

Some of you may have seen the post regarding this upcoming show. If not you can go to my blog. The reason I am posting here is to ask all of you lovely costume and goody makers for donations of items that you may want to get rid of or show off or just do for charity. We are going to be raffling off prizes at the show, and will be giving 100% of the proceeds to Women of Darfur, to help get them out. It takes roughly $3000 to get each woman and child out, so we can use all the help we can get. We already have some donations from local businesses, like an All day beauty package from a salon, and certificates from a travel agency, a 3 hour tattoo session, etc...But being that this is a Bellydance Show, I think it would be great to have some bellydance items, costume pieces, head dresses, falls, Dvd's, coins, cowries, you know all the goodies....so if anyone can help I would so appreciate it. We will give full credit to the person that donated, so it could even help in your business. Please contact me if you would like to help in any way.

Ruffle Butts Tribal Panel Skirts

New panel skirts. Comfy for practice or performance. I made Heather and I some out of black pvc for our 3rd Coast performance. They look wonderful with Melo's and FABULOUS layered over Rose's Rosehip skirts. These are the first two done, with more to come.
A taste of whats to come? Red Asian prints, Black Asian prints, Dark Red with black roses
and I will be shopping for greens, blues and whites soon. I of course will take custome orders if you have something in mind.
All fabrics will be limited according to the availability I have to them.

These have adjustable side ties,and two layers of ruffles.

Medium Plum Tree, panel measures 16" wide, ties are 24" long, and it measures approx. 10" from top of panel to bottom of the ruffles.

Small Purple Paisley, panel measures 14" wide, ties are 24" long, and it measures approx 10" from top of panel to bottom of the ruffles.

New Headband design =)

This is the new headband style that I have for sale. You can see another example that is my personal headband in my photos. I have another almost completed done on a mottled red base with gold, silver, rhinestone and turquoise accents
This first one for sale has a black suede base, with glass pearls and small metal and rhinestone bits, and two large rhinestone accents on the ends. There are some detail pics of the headband in my photos.
For those of you like me who are animal lovers here is some info on where i get my leather, it is from upholstery remnants so its not bought from new sides of leather. Some of it you could tell was a couch cushion that was no good for some reason. So its stuff that could have just been thrown away =/
The ends are finished in D rings to attach your own goodies to and the ties of your choice. The rivets that secure the D rings are screw on style so that you can add other things on such as the large Miao earrings ect, and screw back together to secure the loop back.
Price for this one is $45 plus S&H. ok, I'm looking for the lady that makes those 3 tiered skirts that look like many more tiers than that...very colorful, lots of hem yardage.....anyone know what I'm talking about? I googled this until I thought I'd die, and I still cant find them. At one time, I had googled"tribal belly dance skirt' and the pics popped right up but NOW...the search provides no results for me.

I've been working at beading a new bra/belt set. The fabric is antique gold/brass brocade. The beads are copper, chocolate and apricot. I intend to stick with just the seed beads.

But something is missing, or at least, not quite right. I've been staring at it for a few weeks now, and can't figure it out, so I thought I'd ask for help! What color am I missing? What do I need to add to the mix to get it to "pop"?

Dear Belly Dance Designers,

October is upon us!! So get ready for OCTOBER'S spotlight 'color'!!! ...........Hmm.. been thinking about this one! ..........Let's do something a little different this month! The spolight will be on *~THE SPIRIT OF HALLOWEEN~*...what costume designer doesn't like the Holiday that Costumes are worn the most!?!?!?!

Thought it would be fun to have a different featured color for every month... but this month it is not about color ~ it is about WiTCHies, GhosTs and Grewblins! ...we are sure to see lots of creativeness here! SO if you have a new design or designs in that go along with this theme... Post It!

THIS MONTH THERE WILL BE A COSTUME CONTEST! Some of you may know this already, but recently there was a costume contest at Desert Dance Festival this month.. and Anaar (www.whitewand.com) & i (www.geishamoth.com) entered a collaborative works... and WON! It was soooo fun! Now i want to bring that thrill here for this month!

Rules:
1) To enter you must be a Belly Dance Designer - a Belly Dancer + Designer in ONE!

2) The entry must be all that YOU designed. No pre-fab, nor commercial wear AT ALL.

3) One good photo, per entry. *you may enter multiple times, but with different entries. *MUST be a new costume/item, not previously posted at this tribe.

4) Please be sure to TITLE & put YOUR NAME in the Subject header,

5) To enter, you must post your photo between October 1st (not before - NOT before) until October 22nd Midnight PST. *BUT the sooner you enter the greater chances you will receive more votes!

6) Please be sure to write a description of your entry in the "Description" portion of photo posting. AND STATE THAT IT IS A "COSTUME CONTEST ENTRY"!

7) Your entry does NOT have to be an entire costume!! I REPEAT..

8) Your entry does NOT have to be an entire costume!! I REPEAT again..

9) Your entry does NOT have to be an entire costume!! it can be one item, hair ornament, bra, necklace, etc. So i encourage you to enter if you have just a single item!!

10) To cast your vote... you can NOT vote for yourself :o)))) and you can only vote one time. Voting is at the posting -"HALLOWEEN POLLS" any comments at individual photos is fine, but to cast your vote- it must be at the polls! Voting will start October 1st until October 29th midnight PST. *you must be a member of Belly Dance Designers Tribe.

11) WINNER will be announced on Monday, October 30th!

12) PRIZE!!! But what is a contest without a PRIZE?!?

Website creation help

Hi all!
I'd like to create a website to showcase and sell the jewelry that I make. I don't really know where to start and hope you can help me with some info and tips. I would like to have something that looks nice but isn't expensive to start up. I am willing to do the work but I don't know where to begin. Who has a good web hosting site that is cheap or preferably free? I'll probably just start out with PayPal for credit cards and already have that in place from e-bay. Any other tips, hints, suggestions??? I'm all ears (or in this case eyes ^_^).

You can look at a few of the tribal style jewelry pix that I have in my profile if you'd like to get an idea of the kind of jewelry I'll be selling.

Post your entry as a PHOTO, not a topic.

Be sure to put:
1) "A Title for your entry and Your Name" in your photo subject header!
2) "October Costume Contest Entry" as the first line in your description!
3) Then to follow in your description... a uh...description! ie. textiles used, colors, etc...
4) And if it is for sale that info too...ie. size, pricing, links, etc...

Got some new goodies

Interchangable disk headbands. You will be able to change the disks out, with a heavy duty snap system, i can do up any of my disks for use with the headbands. This particular headband is a black brocade, with antique tribal metal discs, shell buttons, and nail heads.
The headband with a set of disks is $35 plus $4 s&h

The blue set is featured on the headband to give you an idea of how it looks, I can also do up white bands for use with the white set if your wanting an all white look.
