In May 2006, the Parks board voted approval for Acton Ostry Architects to prepare designs for a new 3,500 sq.ft. restaurant bistro, replacing the old run-down food stand (in progress). Please support this positive development in the 'hood. we need to activate these public areas to foster an animated streetscape. A great example of this is the Watermark restaurant on Kits Beach. A suggestion of historical concepts is Joe Fortes and the early beach and bath house in English Bay. Go to the city of vancouver picture archives.
There is an huge opportunity to create a great a wonderful boardwalk quality along this edge of beach, walkway and street.

Re: New Restaurant in English Bay. - please support
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 9:11 AMI've heard that some westenders are concerned that the area will become more "elitist" with a new restaurant and that not all locals will be able to afford it in the same way as the existing cafe. I'm just curious about your thoughts on this. -

Elitist is one way of looking at the developement. The positive perspective is developing a source of funding to maintain our beaches. the upgrading of the facility i think brings in revenue for the Parks Board to maintain our beach area and refreshes that part of the beach that seams abandoned. ie. the change rooms, 2nd beach pool. Rather than increasing local taxes to maintain our beaches, public pools, tenns courts, change rooms, sea walls walkways, what better way than to offset these costs to local businesses, instead of the westend residences, is that not a good thing?
The question of affordability is a sensitive issue. There is a range eating establishments in the westend that are $ and $$$$. it may appear on the surface that only the new restaurant owners benefit, but i don't see it that way. Local businesses need to develop services for all the residences in the downtown area.
The fear i think would be is that there is no development and businesses shut down and westend becomes a residential neighbourhood with no places to meet and socialize.
it took 4 years for the Watermark restaurant to be approved, now that's build everyone loves it. the project created a focal point at Kits beach that both local residence and visitors can enjoy. I believe this to be a good thing.
