the report from the playa is dust dust and more dust. we are advised to bring proper goggles without vents on the sides, something better than cheap raver goggles. also respirators are suggested. high winds are anticipated so secure everything real good, and bring warm clothes for cold nights.

from what i've read, it sounds like the 7-hour long dust storms of 2002 post-event are back. they were completely miserable, you couldn't see 10 feet in front of you, couldn't go anywhere because you'd just get lost and/or run into something. luckily it was after most people had left. we may not be so lucky this year, so be prepared.

If it's really urgent, you can call Diva weekdays between 5pm-11pm, weekends any time, at 415/845-4510. I have a day job so please do not call me until after 5pm!

If you're planning on being part of the meal plan, your last day to get your payments in is August 10 or until we reach 150 people. We're filling up quick so if you want to enjoy our kitchen, please get your payment in, ASAP!

Just to update you, we now have two full-time gourmet chefs, Jeff Holmes and ZigZag, managing our kitchen, plus a kitchen staff of ten. (That's ZigZag in the photo to the right.)

All of our produce is coming from Planet Organic. We have purchased a refridgerated storage container (16'x8') which will serve as a walk-in fridge/freezer. There will be an ice machine, full commercial kitchen, themed meals, salad bar to accompany lunch and dinner and more surprises that Jeff and ZigZag keep adding!

It's $140 for seven days (8/27 - 9/3) or $80 for four days (8/31 - 9/3). Both plans include three meals a day. You can bring a check or cash into the American Steel building and give it to me, Monica, or Dan, or you can paypal dan@dandasmann.com.

* Everything must be here in the American Steel Building by August 9!
* Clearly mark your stuff so that it's very obvious it's yours!
* When you arrive at American Steel, ask Monica, Diva or Margaret to show you where to unload. This will ensure that we get your stuff on the truck.

Not Enough Cooks in Our Kitchen!

The Devil's Workshop & Day Spa, an all new large-scale theme camp, supporting the Crude Awakenings Crew & other artists, is looking for a small team of great cooks. This is an excellent opportunity for a few responsible Burners that are looking to help contribute. Additionally, the position comes with a free Burning Man ticket, free meals, free camp dues and free transportation to/from the event. You can't beat that!

About the Position

We are building one of the largest art installations that has ever been on the playa Our crew will be on the playa from August 13 - Sep 7. Our camp, The Devil's Workshop and Day Spa will be providing meals to our campers and the Crude Crew (about 30 people). We will need 5-8 people who can commit to being on the playa for one to two weeks (doesn't have to be concurrent) and will make two meals a day and staff the kitchen. We will have a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, stove, sink, etc. There will be camp volunteers to help with clean-up but the kitchen staff is in charge of coordinating them.

We are also looking for a head cook/kitchen manager. It would be an ideal job to split for a couple!

In Exchange You Get

* a free Burning Man ticket
* free meals while you're on the playa.
* waived camp dues ($50).
* space on our trucks to haul your stuff there and back.
* and to be part of this exciting and dynamic project.
* more perks for the kitchen mgr/head cook --TBA

Interested? Here's what to do...

It's pretty important to us that our team gets well fed. So we need to know that you're reliable, have experience cooking for groups, and aren't going to burn out and leave us hungry. Even though you'll be at Burning Man, we need you to consider this a job. Although we're paying you in trade, it's a pretty great package!

If you're interested in this position, please email Diva ( netdiva@gmail.com ) and tell me a little bit about yourself and why you should be considered. If I don't know you, I'm going to want some info about other projects you've worked on, how many times you've been in the desert, who can vouch for you, etc.

Feel free to forward!

About Crude Awakenings

A play in two parts, by Karen Cusolito & Dan Das Mann, Crude Awakening illustrates our so-called modern society replete with our dependence on oil to support our lust for cars, power, products and convenience. What happens when the oil is gone? Will the Earth still be healthy enough to further sustain us? Have we finally gone too far?

The nine faithful are portrayed in monumental scale, at the conclusion of their pilgrimage to pay homage to the highest and holiest deity - the Revered Oil Derrick. Some have arrived and assumed their respective postures of worship, others are still approaching from the direction of the horizon.

You aren't confirmed until you've paid your dues. At this rate, we may not have room for everyone so be sure you've confirmed and paid your camp dues.

If you have trouble reading this email, you can view it here.
Dear Devil's Denizens:

We've got so much news to share!!

Today, we heard from the Burning Man placement team and we can now announce our playa address: 5:00 & Esplanade. Damn, that's some prime real estate! Time to get planning our camp map...

Mustang Jack and the Brain Freeze crew have announced plans to stake out our back corner with two frozen margarita machines and a whole lot of Stickers. Meanwhile, we let Dan Das Mann and Che loose in a kitchen auction to get supplies for our kitchen. They came back with a commercial ice machine, an 16'x8' walk in freezer, hot chocolate machine, waffle irons, and a truckload of kitchen equipment.

Speaking of food, Jeff Holmes has sold us his soul and his culinery expertise. He'll be managing the Devil's Kitchen. An eleven year playa veterin, Jeff has managed resort kitchens and is a mighty-fine cook. Along with our full time kitchen staff, and full on-playa commercial kitchen, he'll make sure that temptations are never far away. Did we mention that all our food will be organic?

Here's how the meal plan will work. We're offering two plans, seven days (8/27 - 9/3) for $140 or four days (8/31 - 9/3) for $80. That's just $20/day which we think is a pretty awesome deal! You must decide before August 10th. You can send your payment in with your camp dues.

Lastly, if you haven't paid your dues yet, starting tomorrow (8/28), they go up to $85. You can paypal dan@dandasmann.com. If you haven't confirmed, there's still time. We're extending the deadline to Wed, 8/1 or until we reach 180 people. Hurry because we're filling up. Details about how to confirm are below.

Physical Description:
——————–
Facing the Esplanade will be a 12′ tall gate made of sheet metal, shaped like
the face of the devil. Burners will enter through this gate. The facial
features of the gate will be cut out and back-lit with red lighting. “Bits”
from Crude awakening will be welded on to embelish the features. Fire will
“poof” from the horns.

The front-facing area (carved out about 75′ across by 30′ deep) will be our
shaded common area. The Devil’s Workshop will be made of work benches lining
the right half of this area. Lining the perimeter of the left half, will be
our kitchen area. In the center will be couches and tables. To the left of
the kitchen will be a series of carport-style shade structures, attached to
chairs, day spa supplies, and a glorious waterfall made from the grey water
used in our kitchen & the spa.

After our art piece is completed, we will be parking our Galion All Terrain
Crane (60′ Boom) behind the center of our common area. Suspended from the
crane will be the former “Dustfish Borg Bar” which will be used as a floating

observation deck.

Behind the Workshop & Day Spa, will be space for campers. RVs will line the
perimeters and there will be some perimeter parking for crew vehicles &
resident Burning Man Staff (Cat) that cannot be blocked in. Backing up to the
kitchen (so as to share the water supply), will be our shower. (The grey water
for this will be filtered through pantyhose and be split between the Day Spa
Waterfall & an evaporation pond.)

Tents and campers will be logically arranged around walk-ways and zones.

In the very back will be Jack & Tanya from Mostly Mustangs will be providing
Awakenings crew will be onhand to supervise, ensure safety ranks higher than
third, and to instruct people on how to use the tools. Welding class sign-ups
will be easy to find and daily welding workshops will be given on the playa.
The shop will be open and supervised 16 hours a day. Art cars can come by to
make repairs. Costumers can mend a sleeve. Carpentry tools will be
available… This is Dan Das Mann & Karen Cusolito’s tool shed on load to the
playa!!! The only catch will be that tools must be used *on-site*.

The Day Spa:
Inside an enclosed carport, we will provide a tranquil oasis for weary burners
to come in and wash their feet, get a massage, practice yoga (with Steve23 &
Juicy), and take care of their bodies. The Day Spa will be primarily
self-service and open round-the-clock. Ambient music and soft lighting will
help set the tone. Used water will be poured into a reservoir, filtered and
fuel the relaxing waterfall. Heat will be provided during the evenings and

electric fans during the day. A misting system will surround the perimeter,
