I hurt my back, so i haven't worked out since monday. This sucks. Its a lumbar strain - how long should i lay off? Until I can sit comfortably without pillows? I know, ask a doctor, but I don't have access to one. I hadn't realized how much of my self esteem was wrapped up in those full length mirrors at the gym. If i don't see myself flexing and pumping my mind imagines I'm a soft, weak, girly, girl. grrrrrr. *whine*
I know, just drink water.

Re: hurt back
Sun, January 13, 2008 - 12:03 AMNo. Not that soon. Wait another few days after that until you can get up and sit down without strain at all solidly. Don't strain a freshly healed back.
My back injury took months, but it' more extreme. My advice is rest it as much as possible until you feel it ease again and then rest a little more.
Good luck.

Re: hurt back
Sun, January 13, 2008 - 8:37 AMI have had a few similar minor strains - go easy on anything that hits that area (and you'd be amazed at how many things do).
I've found it can take weeks to months to totally heal. So initially I just modified my routine to hit things that didn't hurt my back - and gradually worked in stuff that hit it with light weights after 2-3 weeks. But never to the point of really hurting. It's a tough call. Listen to your body.
But you should be able to find stuff worthwhile to work on in the meantime.

Re: hurt back
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 3:31 PMStretch, above all.
I've had "can't walk" level back injuries magically go away in a day or two by doing some light (very light) stiff legged deadlifts to stretch out the knot. -

Re: hurt back
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 1:42 AMI had a paralysing back injury a few years ago and it took months to be even able to lift 2kg! rest for a while and start back into it slowly, don't get straight back into it with gusto only to do the same thing again. Build back up slowly, heat packs, stretches, yoga worked, and still does, for me.
Listen to your body, if you feel anything, pain, soreness, stop.
I'm recovering from medial epicondylitis at the moment and I am so frustrated that I can't do any lifting, but I don't want it to get worse. -

Re: hurt back
Sun, March 8, 2009 - 11:38 AMI used to get my back out of whack in the lumbar when I lived in Northern Maine and heated my 20 room house strictly with wood.
I'd get huge "stump ends" ( that's what the guy called 'em) of Oak from the Boat building industry.
They were 30 foot long tree trunks from the stump on up usually about three-feet in diameter. .
He piled 'em up about 20 feet or higher in front of my barn using his logging truck's hydraulic grapple
I'd go up the pile with a chain saw, saw off a length of log about 12 - 18 inches long roll it off and do some more. Then I'd climb down and set about wrastling the chunks of log into the barn where I hand split 'em, with a double bit axe.
The children would pile them in the wheel barrow and take 'em in to the house where they stacked 'em by the 3 wood stoves.
I tried a maul and a fancy axe with these cams in it and hated 'em both. The light slender double bitted axe was the only way to go. It was light fast and split wood at a real fast clip.
Occasionally I wrenched my back wrastling those monster logs around. But I couldn't stop splitting wood 'cause that was all I had for heat.
I walked every where I went like I had a dime pinched between my butt cheeks and with my spine held as straight as I could. When I was lifting heavy weights ( logs) I kept my back dead straight vertical (never flexing from the lumbar) and used my knees almost exclusively - it was clumsy but it worked.
That protocol and aspirin with single malt scotch usually got me right as rain within a couple of weeks.
