New here

I just joined the group. I do not currently have a bodybuilder's physique. In fact, I have a ways to go. Is it possible for a 39-yr-old guy to begin bodybuilding and see signicant results? What would you suggest I do to begin the process? I have been an avid swimmer for years, but I am now interested in buidling up muscle mass as I get older. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hey bud the thing to do is make it part of your lifesyle .. get a whiteboard make small goals every week.. being healthy means everything eat right drink more water... flexing can help you gain too when your not near the gym... i only work out three times a week just to keep the same mass .. getting large will not happen to all people... good luck

    keith make it fun

Thanks. Does the flexing of different muscles help with definition? One area I would really like to work on is my butt and thighs. I need better firmnesss there.

I think flexing might help with blood flow, but to get firm you have to use resistance (moving with body weight also counts as resistance). Just about every exercise firms up butt and thighs. Most aerobic ones: skiiing, hiking (up-hill mountains especially), climbing, kickboxing - everything except kayaking. In the gym, squats really work the glutes and quads, just use good form and don't go heavy initially.

39 is not too late. You'll take longer to recover so diet and rest become key.

I think that every setting on every elliptical crosstrainer probably works the glutes...

I will have to wait until after my hernia surgery to do that.

Well as a second best can you do lunges with light weights? That's a good toner even if it doesn't build nearly like squats.

You have all given me some great advice. I mentioned a possible hernia surgery, but I am happy to say I may not need to do that. I found an herbal remedy for my condition. I have been taking the herbal pills for about two weeks now, and th hernia seems to be getting less severe. The formula is supposed to eventually heal the condition. I will keep you updated on the progress.
