Liquid Sky (1983) - Cheesy 80s. Great fashion and dialog. Special interest note: Otto von so and so did the sound track and also did the music to Madonna's first single "Cosmic Climb" b/w "We Are the Gods?"
Dr. Caligari (the 1989 whack-o version) - no not the German expressionist master piece. This is the SoCal, avant, theatrical, low budget sequel. Borderline porn with tons of weird and fantastic quotable dialog.
Until the End of the World (1991) - Wim Wender's epic journey around the world predicting what the year 2000 will be like and the ability to record and playback your dreams. Landmark soundtrack with music made specifically for the film by Talking Heads, U2, Can, Nick Cave and many more...
Contact (1997) - Jodie Foster travels far far away in a nanosecond. I haven't seen this one since it was at the theater. I remember thinking it was really good.

Re: Suggestion List
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:28 AMDr. Caligari and Until the End of the World have only come out on VHS AND are out of print...so you have to chase them down via ebay, etc. Liquid Sky has been released on DVD. A Place like Premiere Video on Mockingbird might have all of these.

Re: Suggestion List
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 5:44 AMI just saw "American Astronaut" (2001) - Absolutely freakin' brilliant black & white surrealist cowboy space movie. I would love to show it this weekend maybe? It's a Netflix rental so I have to return it eventually.
I thought Unti the End of the World was kind of a lemon... I VASTLY preferred Wim Wender's earlier movie, Wings of Desire, which also features live performance by Nick Cave and has a generally great soundtrack. -
-
Re: Suggestion List
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 11:23 AMI have Wing's of Desire on DVD and VHS, the soundtrack on CD, two poster prints...I love, love, love that movie. Favorite all time. It's related to some not some good movies though...the sequel "Far Away, So Close" is not so great and Wings of Desire had a US remake that I have not bothered to see, "City of Angels" in 1998.
The Nick Cave and the Crime and the City Solution stuff on the Wings of Desire soundtrack is incredible! From Her to Enternity...The Carny...great music
I only saw Until the End of the World the one time at the theater. I may have been biased by being deep in the middle of a in love with everything Wim Wenders phase :D still I need to see it again...
"black & white surrealist cowboy space movie" uh...heck yeah!

Re: Suggestion List
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 11:03 AMThis thread got derailed a little so I thought I would bring it back....
Romantic Comedies (normally this category makes me shudder but):
The Price of Milk: a super quirky movie from New Zealand that makes you think anything can happen. Very much a fairy tale in the Brother's Grimm style.
Animation:
The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb- A totally surreal stop motion movie that just came out onto DVD within the past couple of years. It came out in the early 90s, but it's some of the neatest stop-motion (if you like that sort of thing, and really really do). Plus it's just plain fucked up weird. So I'm sure that aspect will appeal to many of you.
Waking Life- A texas homeboy's film. If you haven't seen it, please do. It just might elucidate for you why I have the name "oneiro". The rotoscope is truly amazing. Very trippy in it's own right, and you don't even need drugs to appreciate this said trippiness. A Scanner Darkly isn't too bad either.
Science Fiction:
2001- Right before I left Seattle I saw this movie in the theatre the way it was meant to be scene it true cinerama. HOLY FU©K it was amazing. Unfortunately there are only 2 cineramas in existence anymore, but if you get a chance to see this on a big @$$ TV jump at it! If you can see it in HD/Blu-Ray.... EVEN BETTER!
Brazil- Terry Gilliam at his finest. The first time I saw this movie was on TV at 3 in the morning when I was in high school. It's one of my top favorite films ever. Quirky, odd, surreal, dystopian, and a love story tangled in as well. If you have a chance to see the criterion collection of this you can see all three versions of the film. His cut, the european cut, and the US cut. FUN FUN FUN
Best all around picture you can shake a stick at:
The City of Lost Children- A spectacularly beautiful film. It's completely embedded in a fantasy world, but the texture is amazing. It's pure entertainment, but has a truly unconventional idea of love that it presents in a very light fashion. Unconventional in the same way that "Me and You and Everyone We Know" is unconventional.
Also by the same creative team that brought you The City of Lost Children:
Delicatessen- This is another visually stunning surreal little film. Is there a genre for horror comedy? If there is, this film would definitely qualify. It's not funny in the way that friday the 13th is funny... it's more of a surreal and strange set of events taking place in a horrific setting, but you don't really focus on the horror aspect as it is not in the foreground of the film.
okay that's it for now.
Load up your Netflix/Blockbuster queues or run out and see these now!!!
recommendingly,
m.e
what are you still doing here?!?! I said go rent the above films NOW!!!! Sheesh you guys can be stubborn. -

Re: Suggestion List
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 11:31 AMAll greats, except I didn't like Waking Life because it was whiny and gave me a headache.
Gotta throw Flesh Gordon in there somewhere, the almost-X rated Flash Gordon satire. Group sex, phallic space ships, and stop motion animation. Watch as Flesh, Dale Ardor, and Flexi Jerkoff save Earth from the dreaded sex rays from the planet Porno, ruled by Wang the Perverted. A classic.
I gots bunches and bunches of movies, but an old fashioned CRT TV.

Re: Suggestion List
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 12:13 PM"Delicatessen"
Meh. There are better movies about people eating people. Eating Raoul and Parents come to mind. I haven't seen Sweeny Todd or Soylent Green yet... -

Re: Suggestion List
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 10:03 AM"People...
"People who eat people...
"Are the LUCKIEST PEOPLE...
"In the world...."

Re: Suggestion List
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 11:48 AMI just watched "Feast" last night and it was one of the most enjoyable horrorflix I've seen in awhile!!
I also highly recommend "Pulse".
Oh, and "The Descent".
I can find something to enjoy in just about any experience, but I did walk out of C.H.U.D. and one of the Highlander sequels I've tried to wipe from my memory...
Horrifyingly,
Major Tom

Re: Suggestion List
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 11:32 AMI would always be up for watching City of God, and I think its a must see film in general. I know people think it a bit harsh, but I was glued to this film. Just amazing!!!
And going towards the other end of the spectrum, may I suggest Detroit Rock City. You have to leave your brain at the door with this one, but nothing says 70s sex, drugs, and rock n roll like a KISS concert in Detroit. -

Re: Suggestion List
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 12:04 PMCity of God is my favorite film made in this century so far. I have a copy and would be down for that one. -

Re: Suggestion List
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 2:39 PMBLUE VELVET...I watched it yesterday. Had seen it years ago. Dennis rocks and my favorite line : Isabella whispering " hit me". I want to watch it over and over again! -
