Costume shop

There is a costume shop in Ft Worth (Texas to those who don't know) that is going out of business. It will be open until the 31st. I've been a couple of times since finding out about it. The signs say that everything is 50% off. The only catch is that nothing has a price tag! You have to bring whatever you want up to the front and have the very old lady who is smoking like a chimney give you a price. So, someone who knows more about costuming and haggling will probably make out better than me!

I got some nifty stuff. Here is most of it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51249806@N00/
The peach dress is tattered and wonderful! It reminds me of Ms. Haversom (sp?) from Great Expectations. I have to take it in a bit here and there but it will make a great zombie or drunken Southern Belle costume!

Back to the shop. As I've said the Very Old Lady who runs it, smokes like a chimney as do several of her employees. Her son, who is about 45 or so, walks around with his head down and is about 5 feet tall and grizzly...and barely speaks at all. The building itself is in a shiesty part of town and is yellow and Tired!!! There are wigs everywhere inside...hanging from the ceiling, draping off of shelves, even on the floor. Half the time I expected some of them to go scampering over my feet. It is small, but there are so many costumes that it seems a bit like a labrynth. The Very Old Lady made most of the costumes herself and had been in that building for 60 years! New landlord is making her move out. )-: Some of the costumes are amazingly detailed where as others are just plain sad. There are bolts of fabric from the 50's until now that are for sale...as well as patterns from those years. There are giant rabbit heads (at least five) in various places around the store. In a very dark and creepy corner there are a bunch of animal costumes that look like Furries or Fuzzies or whatever it is called have overused them. I tried to stay away from that section! And EVERYWHERE there are drawers or counter tops that are overflowing with beads, ribbons, feathers and trimmings.

It is such a nifty place....I'm just sorry I didn't find it sooner!

I live in a small-ish lake-side community...on one of the street corners is a teeny tea house called "Village Tea House."
Mix-matched curtian panels in the windows, eclectic collection of local artists' work inside and out side the building...If I can get out and take a walk down there today, I will take pictures.
Totally Diagon Alley!!!

Walking out in the artsy downtown district, I wandered into a vintage/second hand clothing store.
O-M-G.yes, I walked right in to the Weasley's closets!!
Fantastically gaudy sweaters, leg warmers, arm warmers, corduroy pants (with bell bottoms cut into 'em)!
Of course I bought a sweater and warmers!
Cheers!

When I helped out a a show once they let me hold a barn owl. It was too nifty!

Ann, one of the founders, died earlier this month. She was a very sweet, wonderful, and all around nice person. Pierre, her husband, is way groovy and cool. They do amazing things for birds - from song birds to raptors. They are beautiful people. If you do send them anything...just say it is in honor of Ann. 'Cause that would be an awesome thing.

Once again the pictures on the site don't do the place justice. It is a three floored labrynth of books that occasionally leads you into these tiny rooms stuffed with more books...some are under the stairways others are closets lighted by a single bulb with a cord hanging down. Its a place that you just expect books to go fluttering by or fall straight into your hands...being THE book you needed but didn't know you were looking for. The floors are creaky. One room has this grated giant hole in the wall that rumbles when the furnice starts up. There is also a section that is gated off...not sure why...all I could see was Grisham...but obviously there is something juicy in there! If you are ever in Denton, Texas...check it out.

ButterBeer recipe!!!!!!!!

My own disclaimer (because I'm a Mom...and I can say this....) Brandy is opt. only for legal age consumers..... ;-)

Ingredients:
(for one serving)
160cc (2/3 cup) Milk
1 ½ T. sugar
1 t. water
marshmallows
butter

optional:
cinnamon
scotch

About the amounts:
This will fill up a mug like in the picture. If you like sweets, try using 2 T. sugar.

Instructions:
1.Put the sugar and water in a pan (non-stick/Teflon is best) over high heat. Stir with a wooden spoon. It will have a texture like sleet.
2.Stop stirring once little bubbles start to form. As it continues to heat, the sugar will liquefy and caramelize. Once it begins to brown, tilt and shake the pan so it cooks and browns evenly. Once it takes the colour of the picture below (a medium dark brown) remove from heat.

3.Just as you've taken it off the heat, pour all the milk in at once. It will make some noise, but if you don't pour it in all at once, it will splatter.
4.The caramel will have hardened from the addition of the milk, but it will gradually mix in, so don't worry. Put the pan back on medium heat, and stir until small bubbles are forming and the milk is barely at a simmer.
5.Pour it into a mug, top with as much butter and marshmallows as you like (and optional cinnamon), and it's done. Stir it well before drinking. The marshmallows will melt a bit and get soft and delicious. Add a bit of scotch if you want to feel like Winky does from hers.

Okay maybe this is off-topic, as it's about a non-Potter movie, but y'all, I REALLY LOVED "V for Vendetta". I'm going to go see it again this weekend. The only other movie I saw more than once in the theater was "Fellowship of the Ring". "Vendetta" is a seriously fantastic film. Do go and see it.

Also, am I weird for thinking that V is totally effin' hot?

Treacle Tart Recipe #140702
A very sweet, very comforting tart. Do try to locate the Golden Syrup required for it.
Pastry
1 1/4 cups flour
1 pinch salt
1/4 lb butter, chilled
2 tablespoons superfine sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons ice water
Filling
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 cup golden syrup
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Garnish
whipped cream

1 tart Change size or US/metric
Change to: tart US Metric

45 minutes 15 mins prep
Prepare the pastry as for pie crust and chill for 30 minutes.
Roll out for a 9 inch tart pan. Reserve the scraps. Trim the edges and retain the scraps.
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Mix the oats, zest, and ginger, and sprinkle half in the pastry. Pour on the syrup and lemon juice and sprinkle rest of oat mixture on top.
Roll out any remainining pastry and cut strips to lay a trellis over the tart if desired.
Bake for 30 minutes and serve hot or cold.

by-by to this tribe?

So, I'm thinking about taking down this tribe and changing it up. I'm not fostering as much any more. I'm thinking of creating a Diagon Ally tribe. What do you think? Any objections? People can post lnks or pictures of stuff they are selling...having to do with HP or not. I've been wanting to do this for a while, but haven't wanted to run three tribes....and since I'm not fostering as much any more...why not do it now? Maybe I'll even get off my ass and make some crap!...oops I mean crafts!

It will probably be today that I do this. I'll clean out the pictures and past posts. I'm not taking anyone off, so you'll just have to unjoin yourself if you aren't interested!

see ya's!
