Re: A wonderful sign of the times
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 12:24 PMI'm not sure I see how the fact that Ireland is being flooded with immigrants is in anyway "wonderful." -

Re: A wonderful sign of the times
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 12:52 PMReally? Haven't we been 'flooding' abroad as immigrants for centuries, why not open our doors to others who seek what we all seek.....a decent life in a safe place. What I was thinking was wonderful was the influx of different cultures to Ireland (which, let's face it was a less than diverse place when I grew up there) and the fact that these immigrants in this story were melting into Irishness by embracing our culture.
Hope you are well Caemgen.

Re: A wonderful sign of the times
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 3:06 PMYou don't think the forecast that the ethic Irish will be a minority in Ireland within our lifetime isn't alarming? Ireland has the highest rate of immigration per capita in the world (the rate of which if translated to the U.S. would equal the inward population movement of 45 million people in a period of five years), with the so called Irish government bending over backwards to accommodate all other cultures over it's own. Silly things like the rte refusing to use the word crib in a Catholic advertisement because it was deemed too "Christian" and might offend Muslims?? Just look at this years St. Patrick's Day parade, 90% of it would have floats reflecting other cultures.
The Irish didn't flood to every corner of the world. Like other Europeans, the Irish emigrated to countries in the New World. It's not a question of having more or less diversity, the government is pushing for immigration and it's "New Irish" (indicated that you are the "Old Irish" and some how antiquated) for economic reasons. The fact is that immigration isn't necessary to sustain an economy, Japan, with zero immigration, has one of the strongest economies in the world.
Fragmentation of society through multiculturalism is never a good thing. Look what's happening in the rest of Europe, or will we believe that Ireland will somehow be the exception to the rule and be the only country in history to make "multiculturalism" work?
Other than that, I'm doing fine thanks. And yourself? -

Re: A wonderful sign of the times
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 8:56 PMYou do realize that massive amounts of English are having to flee their own country now because of this kind of immigration policy? But Ireland's current policy is far more extreme than even England's. -

Re: A wonderful sign of the times
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 3:52 PMWith all due respect, I think there are massive holes in what you say and I find your opinions of basically wanting to close Ireland's borders rather alarming and sad.
If you had grown up there, you might think very differently, or perhaps not.

Wed, June 18, 2008 - 6:35 PMI'm just wanting the best for those that live in Ireland and so that it's culture can have a chance for survival. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
