I'll have mine for both characters. I've recently discovered that period calling cards are a different size and shape from our usual 2x3.5"., like 1.5x3" or something like that. I'll find the actual measurement for anyone who cares.

Just a name in the middle and an address (just a street, really) in the lower right corner are proper. That's it. Too much verbage is considered pretentious. So load it up, if you want to look pretentious.

Rydell can correct me if he knows better, but we have found no actual guideline for the size. (Even in the books of manners.) Generally, they are about 1/2 the size of modern business cards on up to twice the size of modern business cards. I have taken the view that larger cards are compensating.

An interesting note, cards for women would either be of their husbands name ("Mrs. Captain Henry Duberly") or the women would have their card along with their husbands card together. (My wife plays Fanny Duberly, and this is the approach we are taking for her ... lots of printing, but lots of resulting props to play with.)

How would those names read on their seperate cards? Would the lady use her Christian name, i.e. Mrs. Mary Smith, or her husbands'; Mrs. John Smith?

I started to answer this, but now I can't remember what we dug up from the Etiquette book. If someone else has not answered, I will look it up when I get home.

It seems to me that the size was probably more variable and that to quibble about it would be futile. I ran across the measurement in an etiquette book that I'll probably never locate again.

For theatrical purposes, a bit more information than a name is probably helpful.

I'm making cards for Sairey Gamp (Midwife, Monthly Nurse, Body Dressing {*need to check the proper verbage for the "laying out of the dead" part}) but they are pretty unnecessary for Peggotty.

And Rydell, the proper dimensions would be wonderful if you could post them. Thanks!

    * If anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
