The bar is open...

In order to get the ball rolling here, let's play the "introduce yourself" game. Not that we don't know who we are ; )
Perhaps a mention of name/character name, role/occupation, how long you've 'done' Dickens sort of thing.

I'll go first -
Denise (Nisey) Orr / Eustacia Toobens
This season is still coming together for me. I'll be doing pre-show work for Pete and La Legion Fantastique. During the show, I'll most likely be serving tea to Mad Sal.
Started as a whore in the LORS show - Freezer Fair '90

    Rydell Downward

Sir Mulberry Hawk and Mr. Alfred Mantalini of Nicholas Nickleby.

Started as a Pickwickian groupie in '79 at Fort Mason and stuck with the Fair through its stay at the Fox Theatre. I didn't participate again until it started back up at the Cow Palace in...2000? I and Therese began directing the straggling, miscellaneous characters from books that weren't Xmas Carol or Oliver Twist then, and now we're still at it and engaged too boot. Cute, huh?

I've played so many characters in the past that I can't remember them all. I started in '78. Played general lower class at Fort Mason. Swept the stage at Sal's, etc. Played Sal one year at the Fox Theater. Came up with the Ladies Oratoracle and Recreational Society with Robin D while at Pier 45. Moved away in '90, so this is my first year back, sort of. I'll most likely be working at one of the bars this year. May invoke the ghost of Sara "Pleasure" Parker. She was always a favorite of mine.

      Oo, invoking a ghost!
Thanks for coming up with the LORS show. It was(is) a great gig, although I'm no longer involved, I still feel a great sense of sisterhood.
      I have trouble remembering, too ; )

I leave all of the exact dates to Carrie. The 80's are pretty much a blur to me. Ah, but the things I do remember...

Hello my name is Morgan. My first Dickens was at the Cow Palace in 1978, and I sang in an opereretta, opposite Ernie Caswell as the Prince of Wales (Incognito). My next was not until I was on the Crew that built the Faire at the Oakland Fox Theatre in 1980. I performed as part of Cyderman's Fancy that year( I have some pretty gruesome tales of building that show!). Visited and adored the site on the Pier in SF and was all geared up to work it in 1989...And Then The Earth Moved. 1990 Freezer Faire I played music for Pipe & Bowl, and played and danced for Red Tail Morris (see icon). After a long hiatus I will be returning for a few visits this year, with my Husband. in tow .I have purchased patterns, and am beginning a sewing frenzy.
          I LOVE a Dickens Christmas!!!

            Claudia Weeks

            aka Mary "Mamie" Dickens

Eldest daughter and 2nd out of 10 children to Charles Dickens and currently in charge of managing my father's house in London along with my Aunt Georgina (Aurie Bradley). This will be the 3rd year the parlor is in existence and we keep trying to improve our little slice of Victorian domesticity every time. Everyone is welcome to come pay a call, Sir Mulberry does quiet often and I still need to speak to him regarding the disappearance of our cook Mrs. Cooper. No matter your social level or if your are real or a character from one of Papa's books, you are always welcome.

I've been working Dickens on and off since the 1990 Freezer Fair but am back in it full time now.

This year I am playing two characters:

Peggotty, beloved nurse to David Copperfield

              and

Sairey Gamp (from Martin Chuzzlewit), a midwife, nurse and layer-out of the dead (habitually drunk, partaking liberally of snuff and with an imaginary friend called "Mrs. Harris" to boot.)

My Dickens Fair lineage is as follows:

1978/1979 - Wide-eyed child patron who felt like she'd come home
1980 - (Fort Mason, Pier 3) played the mudlark Lillian Fern (from Dickens' book "The Chimes) at Mad Sal's (age 15)
1983 - (Fox Theatre) played the Fezziwig's downstairs maid, Annie Pruitt, forming part of the legendary "Maid Brigade" made up of Marilyn Letchworth, Carolyn Schultz, myself and another girl named Dawn who was the much put-upon scullery.
1983 - (Fox Theatre) Same role
1986 - (Pier 45) Danced in an Irish music and dance show in the morning and six performances of cancan at the V&A the rest of the day
1988 - (Pier 45) Dance captain and main dancer for the V&A cancan (directed by John Cole and choreographed by Rene Pulliam). Also performed as the Princess Zeonibia opposite Kent Olofson in the magic and dance show "The Sultan of Solonika" at the V&A.

Huge break wherein I moved to London and had various other adventures....fast forward to...

2005 - Having just had a child six months previously I wander forlorn to Pacifica and am quickly snatched up to perform in "Macbeth" on the V&A stage
2006 - I find my home in Otherbookistan as Peggotty from David Copperfield.

I can only quiver in the presence of such talent. A first time attending pay-tron only this year in a borrowed costume to boot. But next year… I’ll have a year of Dickens (note the important lack of apostrophe Carrie!!) snobbery to draw from. Yippee!!

      Jen Aldrich

aka the elusive Mrs. Cooper, cook to the Dickens Family Parlour. Mrs. Cooper is currently "on the continent" and will not be in London this year. Next year, however, she will be back and bringing back all the delicious (and historically acurate) dishes like Queen Victoria Soup for which she is gaining a reputation.

also Bessie Dickens, wife to Charley, Dickens' eldest son. She is in Bath this year with Charley's mother, who you don't mention in front of Mr. Dickens, awaiting the birth of their first son.

In reality, I am on baby leave and will probably show up one weekend but dressed in civies only. My husband Daniel, who plays Charley, will also be sitting out most of the run this year.

      We will miss you all!

I am currently playing Robert MacIan, part of the duo that invented Scottish history for Queen Victoria. I am working with the Adventurers' Club. I have been doing Dickens since '95. Somehow, I never even got out to DCF until '88, and was fully intending to work there in '89, but ...

Charles Culliford Dickens--eldest son of the esteemed author. A wastrell he can usually be found dancing at Fezziwig's or just stepping out the cold for a moment at Sal's. Unfortunately, Charlie will be absent much this year as his dear wife Bessie is due to give birth at any time.

I've been working Dickens since 2003 when I was in Treasure Island. I was drafted for Charlie when Claudia and Jen said, "He can be Charlie." My response was, "Huh?" (As you can see my eloquence was apparent even then).

Hey Hey! She is young and impressionable LET US DO THAT!! :)

        Marnie here:
I have been out at Dickens since the last year at the Pier 98? I was part of the Scottish household, but playing Irish.
When Cow palace started I was also playing Irish Dancing with Shirleigh, home base was Green Man Inn. For three years Wild Geese were out there and there were even more Irish, I was part of them. For the last two years I have been part of Beverage and dancing with Le Can Can Bijou!!

My Son has been part of Dickens as long as I have... He has sung and dance with the Irish... Last year he started playing the part of Mr. Dickens youngest son. He will be doing that again.

My oldest daughter has also sung and danced with the Irish over the years also played with the toys for the parade.

My youngest daughter mostly just follows the rest of us around for general cuteness but she has been out at Dickens since birth ... she is five.

Long, long ago....on a ice-box pier off Fisherman's Wharf, I played Capt. John Winslow, USN (USS Kersarge) visiting the embassy in London in 1863. I also had a street-scum character, Barlow, who was a London cabbie, rampsman, part-time thug... I also worked with Linda Underhill to staff Morgan's (the Wheat Weaver) booth....where I helped keep shop. But the great "freeze-out" of Sacramento put me on hiatus from Dickens Fair for many years.

Last year, I came up to visit for a weekend as Prof. Thaddeus Lowe, the noted American areonaut...

And this year, it looks like I'll be playing with the Sal's Scum, reprising my role as Barlow.
And I've been teaching a pre-fair on "From Text to Gig" based upon museum living history techniques and philosophies.

    Barbara Rose Calloway

Rosie O'Lay ~ Currently the Receptionist at Adorn Thy Hair, Formerly with Lace-A-Lady - the game and the show.

My first Dickens Fair was in 1983 at the Fox Theatre. I was one of Charity's girls at Lace-A-Lady - a game where gentlemen laced up our corsets against the clock. Once they completed their task they received a Christmas kiss under the mistletoe. Back then we wore used ice skating boots - the leather was so hard we could barely walk. Since we had little time to get corsets made before Dickens opened we used orthopedic corsets dolled up with ribbon and lace. In 1984 we did street gigs with Scrooge - played by Neil Hudner - where he would threaten to throw us out in the streets if we didn't pay our rent.

When the Fair moved to Pier 45 I worked at Kay Scotto's gaming booth. A couple of years later I started working for the hair braiding booth; however, every now and then Al Bertini would get a Lace-A-Lady game going which was more a show for the crowd than an actual game.

When the Fair moved to Sacramento in 1990 Lace-A-Lady became a stage show. One of the few times where I was actually an actor at fair and not a boothie. It was in the mid-30s inside the Fair and we did the show in our corsets and underwear. We used to huddle in the Ladies room just before each show and put our hands and feet up to the hand dryers to stay warm. I also helped out at the hair braiding booth and had to thaw out the water bottles in the mornings because they would freeze overnight.

When the Fair moved back to Pier 45 I went back to working at the hair braiding booth. Anyone remember the year where the Fair was open on New Year's eve?

When the Fair moved to the Cow Palace in 2000 I worked for Al Bertini in the games booth. I used to run the Roulette Wheel and when business was slow I would sit and watch the shows at Mad Sals. In 2001 I went back to being the receptionist at the hair braiding booth and have been there ever since.

Last year I helped out with The Great Race which was a lot of fun. This year I hope to spend more time exploring the Fair and getting to know more people. I'm thinking of joining the Christmas Keepers so I can interact more with the crowd and the actors as well as develop my character.

First started going to Dickens as a customer in the 70's when it was at the Cannery and the Flower Mart.

Worked Fagin's Walk (as Mrs Dilber) and with the Miracle Sweeps at the Fox.

Since Pier 45 I've been Mrs Flora Finching from Mr Dickens novel, "Little Dorritt." I am also currently playing Madame Mantalini from "Nicholas Nickelby." Over the years I have played George Sand, Lola Montez, and Betsy Trotwood

My name is Felicity.... Its all gray area to me when I started attending vs when I started working. I believe I *officially* started working Dickens about 3 years ago. But have been working faires in general for about 13 years. I started Dickens working as a server at the Three Cripples. Being that I'm a permanent "gimp" I figured The Crips was the way to go! This year I'll be sporting a peg leg, given the "snow" is not too slippery. Anyone for Mumbly-Peg? ::grin::

I have no character name as of yet. Anyone got one for me???
  • Re: The bar is open...

The name's Jessa...trying to come up with a good character name that's not too far off from my real name...any fabulous inspirations would be greatly appreciated!!

I work for Mr. Taddich of Taddich's Fine Foods, slinging duck l'orange and turkey wit' stuffin' to all the hungry masses, and when I'm not toilin' away makin' my tuppence a day, I'm blowin' that self-same tuppence at Mad Sals (I hear you gotta be real disreputable to get in wit' 'em, but I say bein' aloof does a body well in a pinch!)

Looking forward to exploring the depths of a character who's in with the bad crowd but thinks their bravado is all just codswallop, who can't do math in her head without making the "math face" and wiggling her fingers, and who's constantly saying the wrong thing at the right time.

    Come by and say hi!

(and fer' god's sake, if you have ideas for a good pun-ish Dickensian last name, let me know!!)

Felicity, how about Beatrice Brazenbod or Bonnie Brightbottom for just a couple of possible funny ones....

My dear friend Annette who is just starting this year took the name I gave her with a smile, Felicia Fairmount. ~smirking~

I'm Kurt Nickerson and can be found on the streets of London as Mr. Alfred Lammle - on the surface, married in bliss to my lovely wife, Sephronia and both of us are now part of society. Under the surface, we married each other thinking the other one was rich and have now discovered our mutual secret. Thus, our true existance is trying to make money anyway possible!

Thus, the reason, Mr. Lammle can be found incognito as a player in the scandalous acting troupe that puts on the show, Naughty French Postcards - his night job.
