DIY Didjeridus

topic posted Thu, August 23, 2007 - 8:36 PM by  Nick
After playing my storebought didjeridu for a year or so, I felt like experimenting with lower and higher tuned instruments made of different media. I bought some beeswax and now have two finished PVC didges (one of which is nearly eight feet long and tuned to a low C, and has surprisingly good articulation and backpressure for its huge size), one made of steel conduit with designs buffed into the surface, and one that's still in the works is a large plum wood didge. The latter is in the process of being hollowed out using the lengthwise split method. I don't have pictures yet, but intend to soon.

Who else here has built a didjeridu? Does anyone have any good tips or suggestions for others who want to build their own?

the best way I have found to glue the sandwich stye didgs back together is using differant sizes of stainless hose clamps. one about every 2" it keeps everything lined up with even pressure

I find 1/2" spacing for clamps with titebond2 wood glue offers a bond that is stronger than the material being joined. This method also makes that unsightly split line fade away or be barely visble.

I like my pcv didj. I found a chart online that showed the length and tone correlation frequencies so I cut mine to about 4 feet long and coated one end with melted beeswax and it works great.
