I do most of my music shopping at Beatport.com, due mainly to their selection and ease of browsing and discovery. Buying WAVs from them, can get expensive as they may be the most expensive pay-per-download site out there. DanceRecords.com on the other hand, sells single WAVs for cheap and full WAV albums for even cheaper, but they have a terrible browsing experience. So, why not use each site for what it's best at. I browse at Beatport and load up my crate with tracks that I want to buy, then go to DanceRecords and search for those specific tracks/releases. If they have them, I add them to my DanceRecords cart and remove them from the Beatport crate. By the end of this process, I may end up saving $5-10 dollars, plus own a full album or two which I would never buy from Beatport.
Today I have a rack with a Denon mixer and a Dac2 controller controlling PCDJ FX on a XP based laptop. I also have a HD2500 that I purchased with the anticipation that they were going to open it up to be a Midi controller for PCDJ Reflex

I then purchased a Macbook Pro to replace the Windows based system and was planning on running Reflex when it became available.

Since Reflex was delayed so much and then they released it with Windows support only I started playing with Traktor Demo but then the Midi firmware update came out for the HD2500 but they only support Windows as well

So before I purchase Traktor I kind of want to play with the final solution (whatever that may be) and get a controller and try it all...

So with the assumption that the HD2500 will not work with the Mac as a Midi controller I was curious of what are the controllers of choice? so I have a 19 inch rack that I usually keep a mixer and the controller and sound card in but on occasion (more now than ever) I seem to be pulling my controller and sound card out and plugging into someone else's mixer. So I'm curios as to things that could make this easier and I like the fact that the HD2500 had the sound card integrated but it seems that some of the other controllers act as a mixer as well. I see the Behringer name thrown around a lot but to be honest I have it stuck in my head that Behringer and reliability may not be hand in hand.. please correct me if I am wrong..

any suggestions and price range are welcome not that I can spend a fortune but I would also like to hear what the Ferrari is for reference purposes :-)

Also if I can't use the HD2500 to control the Mac and need to go spend $500 on a controller would it also make sense to go buy a $500-$600 Windows based laptop and keep that as a dedicated Gig machine using the HD2500 since Mac support seems to be an issue these days.. at least for my purchase choices :-)

thanks and I look forward to hearing your opinions...

I hope that this is a trend that continues, even though I really like the one-stop-shop mentality of the larger shops.

So here's the story....

I've been running PCDJ FX for years and have all kinds of waitlists (their term for Playlists) that have been created over the years

Now I have a Macbook pro and have loaded it up with all my music and cleaned up the tags etc etc.

but when I did that I wasn't thinking and it moved all my files into the Itunes directory format.

So I can export my waitlists from PCDJ into XML files but the directory pats are all wrong and some of the artists names etc have been cleaned up.

Anyone have any tools to recreate my playlist in itunes so I can then use them in Traktor on the new mac???

My first thought was I created a playlist on the Mac with every track I had and exported that to XML and then figured some good scripter (which I'm not anymore since I haven't been on a unix machine with KShell for many years) could grep out the "File Name" and parse out all the info in the new XML file around that file name and input it into a new XML playlist file.

I know this is kind of a specific unique issue but I'm assuming someone else has had to deal with this as new SW comes out and people swap machines etc etc...

so figured I'd try here ...
I'll keep ya posted as well as what I find out

I can certainly see the advantages and innovations in the laptop DJ world, but why choose it over CDjs?

Pros:
-Your set-up will nearly always be the same leading to more consistent performances
-Your entire music collection is at you fingers
-You can choose the mode of Laptop DJ (Serato Scratch vs Traktor vs Live) that best suits you needs
-You can mix in Live PA elements
-You can check your email mid set

Cons:
-You have to bring you precious laptop to every gig with unknown environmental and security factors
-Set-up can sometimes be tricky, like with Serato, and must be done before the music starts
-You have to bring your own gear, instead of just showing up with CDs and headphones

There is certainly a lot going for Laptopping it and every year new technology and products push the performance envelope. But for me, lugging my laptop around and watching after it before and after your set is too big of a hurdle for me to get past. Yeah, I'm paranoid about my laptop. Maybe if I had 2 laptops and had one dedicated for DJ purposes it would be less of an issue, but cost becomes a big factor there.

My tipping point would be doing more Live PA things that require a laptop regardless, but until then, I think I'll live with the limitations of CDJing.

I know there are a few Laptoppers here..... why did you go that way?

I saw the Torq Exponent in action this weekend and chatted it up the the DJ to find out more about it. This looks to be the ideal control deck for laptop DJs, so I was curious to find out about the things the ads and reviews don't tell you. Here are few things that I found out:

The bad:
- The mouse control is super touchy and there is no way to adjust it
- The crossfader is not user-replaceable. When it wears out, that's it.
- It's huge. Seriously... this thing is big.
- The sound card is iffy. It worked fine for his set, but he brought a second sound card just in case
- The included Torq DJ software is terrible. He was running Traktor instead.

The good:
- The mouse touch pad becomes an x/y Kaos style controller for effect at the touch of a button
- Nice large platters with touch sensitivity (similar to Vinyl mode on Pioneer CDJs)
- All buttons are back lit and pulse with the beat of the loaded track

I got to play on the CMX-3000 this weekend and I give it two thumbs way up. This was the first rackmount cdj set that I've used that was as easy to use as a full-sized unit. The CMX-3000 and mixer were all contained in one case, which made for a really sweet portable set-up. It has many of the same features as the CDJ-800 and CDJ-1000, minus the large platters, of course. It also had pitch bend buttons above the pitch slider, which was great to finally see on Pioneer gear. The placement of the pitch bend buttons and the slider made quick adjustments to a track's tempo and sync a snap, not to mention making perfect syncing a breeze to accomplish in within moments. The pitch bend buttons were so effective that I pretty much only used the wheel while setting the cue points.

My only real complaints were the Cue and Play buttons. They had to be depressed a fair amount in order to be triggered. That may be me just used to the flat buttons on my 200s, though. I also didn't like that you couldn't push Play after triggering a Cue play to release it from the Cue state. Again, that is a feature from my 200s that I really enjoy using.

In the end, though, those complaints didn't cramp my style. In a perfect world, every piece of gear would be just as easy to step to with no prior knowledge and be put to effective use without any hassle as the CMX-3000.

This may finally be the iTunes replacement that I've been waiting for. It's basically an audio player with a Traktor-like UI, a built in Beatport mini-store, and a few simple DJ controls like crossfade and pitch control. It also supports the gammut of audio formats, includeing OGG and FLAC, which iTunes does not.

As I do the majority of my music shopping at Beatport, I don't mind the Beatport branding, but I could see how it may be annoying to others. Also, I wish that the mini-store more closely resembled the actual site as there are a few key features that are missing.

I'm excited and hopeful to see how this player develops over time.

http://us1.fakescience.com/

"It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that on November 1st, 2007 we will be closing the Fake Science Music Store. Fake Science was originally started as a labor of love by four friends who had an idea to help share music with people like you and has since grown into the online music resource it is today. However, we evaluated the amount of investment that it would take to keep the store running, as well as making necessary upgrades to keep the Fake Science standards high. We came to the realization that none of us could realistically keep the commitment due to the weight other important things in our lives, such as families, day jobs, and even other side projects. With this knowledge, we wanted to provide you with an opportunity to get back into to the store and purchase music that may interest you. Here are the quick and dirty details about the closure:

The Store will be available until late October 31st / early November 1st
Gift Certificates are no longer available for purchase, but existing GCs will be honored until we close the store, at that time they are no longer valid. If you have a GC or have sent one to a friend please use them ASAP.
We will be updating the blog over the next few weeks with this information, our partners favorite albums, and any other tidbits.
The Fake Science Blog will continue to exist as will the Lab Report podcast.
Please inform your friends, family, co-workers that this is their last chance to purchase music at FS.
Through your patronage of our store and our artists, you have made the last two years a great pleasure and worth all the hard work!

Regards,
The Entire Fake Science Team

I've carried a pretty low opinion of Gemini products from my vinyl days, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. There were some funky issues with the decks, like the buttons weren't really that responsive and the cueing system was more complicated than it needed to be, but those issues didn't effect my set in any way. Something that they had that I really liked, though, were the pitch bend buttons. I've seen these on several different models and brands now and it seems Pioneer is really the only brand ignoring this feature, but they were damn useful. Being able to slightly push or pull the track without having to touch the platter was really nice and perfect for mid-mix adjustments. It was such a minute push or pull that there really wasn't any noticeable shift in the audio, but you could get mix spot on in no time. Pitch bends buttons are definitely something I'll be looking for if/when I am even in the market for new players.

Someone in another tribe pointed this ( http://tinyurl.com/24u745 ) nifty device out. It looks pretty ideal, though I'm sure that I could use my existing equipment to do the same thing and don't really need a third turntable.

Has anyone battled this beast of a task yet? Any helpful tips or tricks? Did you do it all or just certain tracks? What about processing the audio once it has been recorded?

I used a D9000 this weekend. It made me feel like I was DJing for the first time, and not in a good way. I just couldn't get the feel of the pitch bend and adjust down and there were way too many functions and buttons. It was a very frustrating ordeal. This is top-shelf gear so it must be fantastic if you know how to work with it, but it shouldn't be entirely unworkable having never used one before. The other DJs of the evening all agreed. We spent most of our sets hopelessly trying to beatmatch and eventually gave up and just did ambient fades and quick cuts. The few times I was able to sync tracks up, I felt like I had lucked into it. Bah!

I've always felt that an important DJ skill is being able to adapt and work with any equipment thrown at you, and that's something that I'm usually very comfortable with. Unfortunately, the D9000 got the best of me.

It did have one really cool feature that I always find myself wishing for. You could adjust the pitch and key separately. I'd didn't get to play with that at all, but I know precisely how useful that feature could be. Hopefully other manufacturers add that feature to their products in the future. Nothing ruins a perfect mix like disharmonious keys.

I got the feeling that the D9000 is more for Mobile DJs than Club DJs, but that might just be me making excuses.

AS A NOTE FOR THIS FORUM, IN RELEATION TO THE Laptop vs CDJ thread-
Both of these sets were mixed from CDs, actually real genuine pressed vinyl, and a collection of WAV format virtual files. I was trying out my new WAV purchases from some of the new sites set up for the digital DJ. I have never mixed in WAV so it was pretty interesting to try out.

I definitely felt the sonic differences in the file formats during the bommin parts.

YES! this is yet another sound test and trial of mixing formats.

I mixed in the live Terence samples from a rare 10" hard vinyl record of Dreamtime that I found during my last visit to Palenque. I was covering the latest violence in Chiapas for my news coalition, and found a really sweet junk shop with boxes of old vinyl. What a sweet score, and it is the first time in years that I sample scratched from real vinyl. I found four Terence records, and three records with Tim Leary, McKenna, Jones, and some other psy illuminaries.

I will be sample scratching the new stuff tonight so stay tuned.

One set was mixed using a custom built virtual Mp3 system using Traktor3 and PCDJ REDD based programming, and a customized Roland based virtual MIDI/Digilog interface sound mixer similar to Audio8 that comes with Traktor Scratch.

I also have MIXX PADD Pro added as a time coded outboard deck so I can do the same thing as I could with any other scratching capable hands on CD player. I can get the virtually the same effects as if I were actually using vinyl and scratching.

My virtual mixing program includes many of the same features as Traktor, like the 4 CD decks and the same type of built in mixer. The program that plays the Mp3s is almost identical to Traktor except for the features I have added in like MIDI and VST loop and sample programs.

I also have the Roland 24 track/64 channel mixer built into my main hard drive, so as to get the identical mixing sound without the hassle and risk of taking my studio to the illegals and Places of high risk.

Both mixes were recorded directly from the Roland VS2480 program so that a comparison could be made between the standard setup and the virtual based system. The CDJ set was recorded on the hardware Roland and the other mix was recorded with the Roland virtual software suite on the hard drive.

I will let everyone know which mix is which after people have had plenty of time to listen to them. I don’t want to bias anyone’s opinion ahead of time, so we will have a blind test to see if people can really tell the difference in the quality of CDs compared to Mp3s.
(You can find out by going to the artist board over on PsyForumUK. It has been announced, but please judge for yourself before finding out.)
All three mixes were recorded directly from the Roland VS2480 program so that a comparison could be made between the standard setup and the virtual based system. The CDJ set was recorded on the hardware Roland and the other sets were recorded with the Roland virtual software suite on the hard drive.

I will let everyone know which set is which after people have had plenty of time to listen to them. I don’t want to bias anyone’s opinion ahead of time, so we will have a blind test to see if people can really tell the difference in the quality of CDs compared to Mp3s.

YOU BE THE JUDGE! CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCES IN THE SOUND OF THE MIXES? I MIXED THEM AND I CAN’T REALLY TELL MYSELF. I KNOW THAT THESE SETS ARE PROBABLY AS GOOD AS ANY I’VE DONE RECENTLY.
(I HAVE NOT YET ANNOUNCED WHICH SETS ARE WHICH FROM THIS MIX.)

A HUGE THANK YOU AND MUCH RESPECT AND LOVE FOR ALL THE ARTISTS AND THEIR WORK, MAY IT BE MOST BLESSED! WITHOUT YOU THERE WOULD BE NO FIRE!

FOR ALL THINGS GIVE PRAISE AND THANKS TO HIM! MAY JAH’S FIRE CLEANSE AND PROTECT YOU FROM THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF BABYLON. RESPECT AND BLESSINGS! MUCH LOVE!

I know you can use it to bail you out if the track is almost over and you aren't ready for the mix, but what are some creative ways of using it?

I wouldn't call myself a WAV purist, but if I have a choice, I will always buy the WAV version of a track. I've purchased and played out MP3s and they seem to sound fine on their own, but when compared to WAVs, it's painfully obvious that the MP3s sound flat and muddy regardless of their bitrate.

Many digital shops still only offer MP3 versions of tracks, and it starting to becoming a frustrating issue for me. I'll gladly pay the extra buck to get an uncompressed version of a track. Don't you want my money???
