CAIRO // At about 2.30am on a Saturday, Dina, Egypt’s most famous belly dancer, slinks on to the stage of Haroun el Rashid Night Club wearing a revealing pink outfit, accompanied by the sound of her trademark music.

Without an introduction she eases into her routine, gyrating her hips and rolling her stomach in slow, sensual motions, gradually raising the tempo with ever more daring and titillating movements of her thighs and torso.
The audience, made up of upper class Egyptians, Gulf businessmen and tourists as well as a smattering of westerners, is enthralled.

Dina is practising an art that dates back to the Pharaohs, but belly dancing, or raqs sharqi, is these days more often condemned as immoral than celebrated as a national pastime, as religious conservatism grows in Egypt.

In May, Dina caused an uproar after giving a brief performance at a high school party. Apart from the storm that ensued in the media, 17 Islamist and independent lawmakers filed an urgent inquiry with the education minister, and Nabih al Wahsh, a well-known lawyer, filed a lawsuit against her for “seducing students”.
Ali Laban, a legislator and member of the Muslim Brotherhood, called for talks with the culture, education and interior ministers, while Sherif Omar, who heads the education committee in parliament and is a member of the ruling National Democratic Party, referred to the incident as a “catastrophe”.

Dina, in her forties and who goes only by her first name, was taken aback by the reaction, though it is far from the first time her dancing has raised the ire of conservatives.
“When I heard that my dancing for five minutes while wearing a jeans and T-shirt in the prom party [caused such offence], I was shocked,” she said, sipping a cappuccino and smoking a cigarette in the cafe of the Semiramis InterContinental Hotel in Cairo, where she performs three times a week.

“Sometimes I feel I get used to these things, but I don’t, because they never cease to amaze me,” she said.
In Oct 2006, Dina was widely blamed – by officials, the media and the public – after scores of young men chased women through downtown Cairo groping them and pulling off their clothes – even those wearing Islamic headscarves and face veils.

She had been dancing with a popular singer in front of a downtown cinema to advertise a movie that was playing during Eid, and allegedly aroused the men, causing them to run riot.
“This accusation made me laugh,” Dina said. “I couldn’t believe I could be responsible for unleashing a sexual uprising by hundreds of men. It’s just unbelievable.”

Famed for her green eyes, long black hair, and voluptuous figure, sculpted by more than 20 years of dancing, Dina is now one of the only well-known belly dancers in Egypt.

“I see no hope or future for belly dancing in Egypt,” she said. “Ten years ago we were so many. Each one had her own style and audience, whether first-class belly dancers, or second and third class. Now I look around and see nobody.”
According to the Egyptian Arts Authority, 5,000 professional belly dancers were registered in the 1950s, compared with less than 100 today.

While belly dancing is legal, dancers cannot perform on state-owned television in Egypt. And in an attempt to reduce the number of dancers, authorities are giving fewer licences to foreigners and making it difficult for them to renew existing ones..

Police also monitor nightclubs to ensure that dancers’ costumes are sufficiently modest, with slitted skirts that must start below the knee. The navel is always supposed to be covered, if only by transparent material.
According to Dina, who holds an master of arts in philosophy from Cairo University, the belly dancing outfits are the main cause of controversy in Egypt, rather than the dance itself.

“I think the problem some have with belly dancing here is the dancing costume; but it has always been seductive like this, we [our generation] didn’t invent it. Like ballet – can the ballerina dance with a different outfit? We too can’t dance with our bodies covered,” she said.
Wearing a beige tank top and tightfitting pants, and a golden necklace studded with blue charms, Dina said it was becoming increasingly difficult to be accepted as a belly dancer in Egypt, where 90 per cent of Muslim women wear the veil and the trend towards conservative Islam is growing.

“If I had a daughter, I would advise her not to become a belly dancer,” said Dina, who is a widow and the mother of an eight-year-old boy named Ali.
“It’s very tough being a belly dancer in Egypt.

“I surround myself with people who love dancing, and who are very understanding, so I don’t get the feeling that I’m doing something wrong at all,” she said. “But when these problems happen from time to time, it’s a reminder that many people look down on dancing, and that it’s [seen as] shameful.”

Yet demand for belly dancing in Egypt is still high among those who approve of it, especially among the rich who can afford to pay the LE12,000 per hour (Dh8,250) rate that Dina and her band charge to perform at private functions.
“I still dance at many weddings,” Dina said. “Most of the brides are veiled but they don’t stop dancing with me and their groom all night long. For Egyptians who can afford it, a wedding means a belly dancer.”

Suha Abdel Wahab, 30, is one such Egyptian. “Of course I would never imagine myself being a belly dancer,” Mrs Wahab said. “But I had Dina at my wedding, that was a dream come true.”

Still, people like Mrs Wahab seem to be the exception.
“At my wedding, I slaughtered sheep and distributed to the poor, by the same amount of money that I would have paid to a belly dancer,” said Rasha Moustafa, 29, who wears the veil.

“I think God would bless a marriage that begins by feeding the poor not wasting money on belly dancers.”

Nonetheless, in the face of growing disdain for her profession, Dina sees herself as “the guardian of belly dancing”, and vows to continue doing what she loves.
“Belly dancing is in our blood, it’s deeply rooted in our soil,” she said. “I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

“When I get old, and can’t dance anymore, I will train belly dancers. I just hope there will be ones to train.”

Dina and I had a deep conversation about this last month in Dallas. She told me that whenever the government is faced with a political problem (the pound is down, a riot, etc.) they will create a scandal about her to cover up the real issue or problem.

Hello...

I just uploaded five photos of Dina. I received these from an Egyptian friend of mine who lives in Florida. Frankly, I'm not a big fan of Dina. And these pictures are part of the reason why. She has it in her power to really turn this dance into something more classy; yet, she insists on bringing it down to level that resembles porn.

I don't agree with her choice of costuming. It is not the belly dancing I studied and love. I know that I will get flagged on uploaded these photos, but I call a spade a spade. Dina is wearing these so-called belly dance costumes. It was her choice to wear them. I did not twist her arm. No one twisted her arm. These photos are proof of that.

It's no wonder that the fundamentalists are doing what they can to stamp out this rare and beautiful dance. Dina seems to enjoy contributing to the deterioration of the acceptance, celebration, and love for the dance simply through her costumes. I hope that no one here in the USA or the West or the rest of the world follows suit.

It didn’t take more than a New York second for me to reason it out for myself: because it’s a lot cheaper to go to Los Angeles than it is to go to Egypt, and because I really don’t feel too cool about flying to the Middle East under the current circumstances, as a reasonable alternative, I went to the May 14th to 16th workshop and show in Los Angeles sponsored by Little Egypt, featuring the sensual and fun Egyptian dance star, Dina. I must have made the right choice because on Sunday’s break from her dance class at the LAX Radisson Hotel, I met with Dina outside for a quick couple of smokes …and a private casual interview!

I saw Dina dance in person in Egypt in 1994, and today, ten year later, she’s still one of my favorite dancers. She’s surprisingly down to earth and unpretentious, and when I asked her if there was anything that she wanted to say in particular, she replied, “ No, just go ahead and ask any questions you’d like.” Her English is quite good. She said that she had been dancing since the tender age of 9: she talked of her training with the National Folkloric Troupe of Egypt, of her dance instructor, Raqia Hassan, and also the birth of Ali, Dina’s 4 year old son. Ali, who’s the spitting image of his mother, accompanied her for the weekend.

Having taken the Saturday and Sunday classes, (She presented different music and choreography for each one.) I mentioned that I thought I saw the influence of moves from Latin dance in some of her choreography. She seemed to acknowledge that it was so by saying that she had taken some Tango lessons. Also, I did overhear her telling someone that she wanted to go to Brazil sometime in the future.

The videos of the Saturday and Sunday dance classes will be a “must have” for me.

Even though I had every intention of participating fully and getting Dina’s choreography straight, I got lost easily and pretty much just ended up observing Dina teach her class. Still, it was worth the money I paid for the classes just to observe.

I got to see Dina dance and be herself again and again.

Dina is the featured star, performing 2 days per week at the Samiramis Hotel in Cairo. She performs at many weddings, and she said that she had even starred in an Egyptian television soap opera last year.

Of course, I wanted to know who designs her distinctive costumes! Whether you like them or hate them… they are always memorable!

Dina said that she designs her costumes herself, and likes doing so. She didn’t wear anything too outrageous for her show Saturday night; still, she made four costume changes, which was rather tame for her, I thought to myself...

As “girls” sometimes do, we talked a bit about the state of the art of… no, not dance, …plastic surgery. Dina commented that she would like to do something about the tip of her nose. “No, No! I protested. Don’t let them change it!” Then, (stupidly) I asked her what she thought I should have done by plastic surgery.

Without hesitation, she knowingly tapped the bridge of my typical Italian (coin-worthy) profile! Enough said?

I heard that Dina went to Disneyland on Sunday after class, and “shopped (in Beverly Hills) ‘til she dropped” on Monday with Dee Dee from Little Egypt. According to Nora from the Little Egypt group, Dina loved the nice and kind ways in which everyone treated her while she was in California.

When Dina talked on the phone to her honey in Egypt, he asked her if she was having a good time. She smiled and said,

“Of course I am; I love it, and I’m very happy. I feel like a queen here!”

A Sad Lost to the Belly Dance Community

The President of NTMEDA has been contacted by a representative of the Asad family to share some important information with the dance community. Ahmad and Dee Dee Asad were in Montreal Canada hosting Dina in a seminar and show this past weekend. The family knows that the community loves them and is concerned by what they may have heard. At this time, questions from the community are difficult for the family to answer so they want you to know what happened.

At the Saturday night show, after the Dina performance, Ahmad got on stage and made an announcement about how happy he was to bring Dina to Canada, where she had never been before. Ahmad then said something he had never said on stage before. He told his wife that he loved her, that he appreciated all her hard work and that she “makes everything happen.” He then went up to their room where he suffered a massive heart attack and subsequently passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2007. Ahmad Asad was buried on November 5, 2007, according to his Islamic faith, in Montreal. Dee Dee’s sister and her husband were with her in Montreal and Dee Dee’s sister will accompany her back to Dallas.

Little Egypt and the Asad family are a major presence in our community and the family understands that the community cares for them and will want to pay their respects. According to the London based Elaph, Dina revealed that during her adolescence she attempted to commit suicide twice. She also said that her mother is her role model for her strong devotion to raising her children.

Dina stops rumors about illness....

For a second time, Egyptian belly dancer Dina has denied circulating rumors that she is suffering from a life threatening illness and that she has been hiding her illness to protect her career. The dancer also denied rumors about her intention to marry in the near future, stressing that these rumors are just attempts by individuals to ruin her image and cause tension between her and her only son, her number one priority.

I really think this topic has been discussed enough but Dina feels that everyone should know the truth. She is also in the process of letting the arab community know and will have something aired on ART- the arab satellite channel that had commercials advertising her and Saad's performances.

My mom (Dee Dee) spoke to Dina today and she told her exactly why she didn't come. Dina never had a plane ticket to come, none of her band members had tickets, no one had a ticket. Yes, they all had visas, that was not the issue.
The problem was Alex broke the contract he and Dina had together. The deal was that he would pay half of the agreed upon amount upfront before she came and the other half when she arrived. She never got a penny.

The agreement was that she would fly straight from Monte Carlo- where she had a special party she was dancing at- to Las Vegas.

She told my mom "I never went to the airport or waited in any line, why would I go to the airport without even having a ticket?"

About the cost of the visas... Dina had 10 members of her orchestra coming with her and Saad had about 10 from his group... say 22 or 23 total. Each visa application costs 600 LE, Egyptian pounds, roughly $100 dollars.
$100 x 23 = $2,300....
At most, the total cost for the visas would have been $2,500.

Dina wants everyone to know that it was not a visa, a government, or an immigration issue, it was just that the terms of the contract were not meet and the sponsors broke their promises.

She does not plan to keep quiet about this because she feels it makes her look bad and hurts her image.

A week later I felt less shocked. I closed everything. I stayed at home for two months. Then I started to go outside a bit. After six months I started to act. But I missed dancing. My friends helped me. They said that this has happened and that if you meet any bad guy he can do this. You have to be strong. You have to continue your career, you have to be strong everyday.

And I still have to be strong - but now I feel like I didn't do anything wrong. Everybody eats, drinks, has sex. I have to tell myself this all the time. He was my husband and one day he'll come out of jail, but I don't want to see him. I didn't just have it all in public - I lost my husband too."

Egyptian Belly Dancer Dina Investigated for Dancing ‘Wildly’

They can't let her be. From wanting to ban her costumes to wanting to ban her dancing, Dina is again in the spot light.

CAIRO, 11 November 2006 — Egyptian belly dancer and actress Dina is facing investigations on charges of violating the code of conduct of professional film artists by dancing “wildly” with singer Saad Al-Saghir, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday.

Ashraf Zaki, chief of the Egyptian Actors’ Guild, said he has decided to summon Dina in relation to her dancing with Al-Saghir on the release of her latest film “Alayya Al-Tarb Bithalatha.”

The pair were reported to be seen dancing in a street outside the Rivoli Theater Complex in downtown Cairo during the Eid Al-Fitr holidays last month. Zaki said Dina had been summoned after she was reported dancing at the entrance of the cinema with scant regard of the professional etiquettes expected of artists.

“As the chief of the guild it is my duty to defend the interests of the artists who are keen to maintain their professional dignity,” he said.

Dina talks about marriage....

Recently, Dina revealed that the fact that she is a star makes marrying in secret more feasible, since she does not lead a normal life as other ordinary people do. She added that she prefers secret marriages for the fact that her past experiences with public marriages were not so successful especially when she first got married at the age of 17 to a colleague of hers and who put her through hell when she wanted a divorce. She revealed that the only way she got the divorce was after her father interfered and paid a large sum of money to her husband.

Dina views dancing as a physical art, which combines fitness and elegant dance movements. Although many foreigners are performing belly dancing in Egypt, ‘they are not found to be good interpreters of Arabic music’, Dina says, ‘In Brazil, you find that the dancers there dance very well. If I was to appear and try to dance as a Brazilian girl, [the result] would be very different, because I hear the music differently’.

Egyptian belly-dancer Dina has reached an agreement with an Egyptian publishing house after long and extensive negotiations to write her life’s memoirs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this will be the first ever written autobiography from a female Egyptian artist, let alone a belly dancer. I am excited to hear what this icon has to say!

How do you see the future of belly dancing in Egypt?

Dina: "Things have been going downhill for the last four years. Bars are changing to different styles and there aren't many Egpytian belly dancers coming up. That's what has allowed foreigners to come in. This year I've seen in video clips that they're belly dancing, but they're called singers. It's more acceptable like that.

Actually, I'm not seeing anything new. We need ten or twenty good dancers but there's not even five. It's very bad. If it stays like this then the future is outside - in Europe. In Finland I did a workshop - I was standing on stage and in front of me 800 women were practicing in a hall. And from that thousand some good dancers will come."

You studied philosophy of theatre at university. What did you enjoy about that?

Dina: "I liked the Sufistayeen (a philosophy based on the sufi mystical sect). When you say yes, they say no. When you say go out, they say stay in. I really love them. I also like Freud. How women can take care of her child. He put sex in the world. I like the way he talked about how to handle children. I respect him very much."

How does philosophy of theatre help a dancer?

Dina: "Philosophy gives you an experience of people. When I'm on stage I know what the audience is like. Then I can adjust my performance to suit the audience - this is very important for a belly dancer. I don't just do what I want - I do what they want."

What advice would you give to a dancer just starting out?

Dina: "Belly dancing makes women feel like they're feminine. That it's good to be a woman: that women are very beautiful. It's in the dress and the movement. For professionals though, they must train, train, train. I train three days a week, another three days in the gym and another one for different dancing - like jazz, like cha, cha. They must take the ballet bar, for hands, for the head, the have to do yoga. They have to keep smiling in the mirror."
