meeting of the minds!
We all are going dance like people stricken with some kind of fucking euphoria syndrome,
because this musical lineup is unbelievable:

Seriously, you'll have like, an ass seizure.

Workwear: Glamfilth
This all-duty look is worry-free and really saves time. Trashinistas
everywhere are going from the garage to the wedding in such ensembles
as coveralls and coattails, crinoline and welding sleeves, shitty
pants and top hat, fishnets and safety orange. (looking too clean may
earn you a task)

Shop dues: $20

LOCATION CHANGE - Address: 18 Commerce Street, Red Hook

Hi folks -

Here is the agenda for this week:

1) test run of prototype (didn't get to do this last week)
I'll probably do this thursday. Can I get at least one person to help me with this? If thurs. doesn't work I'll do friday.

2) Buy raw materials and transport to workspace before saturday - maybe also do this thursday?
If we do this, charlie can have the pieces cut before saturday. Anyone able to give me a hand? We need to pick up:
8 x 3/4" OSB
~30 8' 2x4's (or maybe some 10' or 12' ones, I have to figure this out)
- fasteners

QUESTION: Robo would like for the construction to be such that these can be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere. At our prototype build, we discussed using a more permanent attachment mechanism (Alfred .. what was it?? nail gun?) that is faster but not really dis-assemblable. However, the "unit" of the course is a 2' x 6' module, which is actually not too bad in terms of storage and transport. So .. do we use screws, which are less sturdy but can be completely disassembled, or do we use a nail gun, which is stronger, but gives us 2' x 6' x 1' tall pieces that have to be transported as-is?

3) SATURDAY BUILD DATE
What time should we start? I'd say we start pretty early, so that we get a lot done, and so ppl can later go to Archer's thing in the late afternoon. Maybe we aim for 11am? Other suggestions?
IF YOU CAN ONLY HELP FOR 1 OR 2 DAYS ... THIS WEEKEND WOULD BE A GREAT WEEKEND!! Please let me know if you will be able to help on saturday and/or sunday so I know who to expect.

4) ID surface materials and purchase astroturf/outdoor carpet - still need more leads & info on this. any help appreciated.

thanks,
Ed

[Ed out of town 6/23, 6/24 but these could be good on site work days
on GI, or days for transport of large components to the island]

Wed. 6/25 - final touches ON SITE
Thur. 6/26 - final touches ON SITE

Fri. 6/27 - OPENING

Build plan [please feel free to add comments/modifications to this]

I. testing & improving zero-g prototype
- what needs to be adjusted?
- can the shape be made playable with additions in the edges?
- how do we make it structurally sound for walking (at least one section)?

II. build major components
- build 6 zero-g units, 2 of these for playing, 4 for lounging
- build start and finish straightaways (finish may be a down ramp)

III. surface elements
- modifying and tuning playing surface
- adding holes for water drainage
- cut roofing paper / waterproof rubber / etc. as a basic surface material
- astroturf: create astroturf patterns for each component and attach
directly to surface material
- attach astroturf/roofing surface (possibly on site)
- design & cut walls for edges & banks of the course

[ IV. OPTIONAL ] - Skill Shot
- this aspect of the design may be added depending on time
- design bypass for zero-g's
- cut holes & install piping

V. Delta shade
- settle on length and width of delta
- acquire fabric, cut, and attach to 2x4's
- build 4 8' triangles (on site)
- assemble delta (on site)
- secure to ground

VI. Signage / Props
- Airport / Magic Carpet Travel Port / Arrivals Lounge / DexAir
theme (to fit with the City of Dreams)
- settle on final set of signs
- create signs: either print & laminate or paint on wood? (to ensure
they are weatherproof)
- attach to structure

VII. Installation
- as much as possible, each component of the hole will be built off-site
- date for transport and assembly on site is not yet set
- surface elements will be designed, cut & ready to attach once base
components are placed

A few design notes:
- given that the surface is a big magic carpet, the surface doesn't
have to be the same in all places. This would be a good way to make
at least part of the putting section MUCH flatter, with perhaps more
curvy/jagged/difficult parts closer to the center of the full carpet
surface.
- I have a few ideas for visually disorienting carpet designs in
astroturf (using 2 colors of turf). Any other suggestions/ideas are
welcome
- Add ons are welcome .. e.g. Ocean proposes to add some fabric
hanging from the deltas

Additional Info:
- build site is in LIC (more details TBA)
- some materials need to be ordered now (delta shade material, astroturf)
- there is a budget. it is not determined yet but will be at least
$1000 (and maybe closer to $1500)
- info on tear down will be forthcoming from figment minigolf
committee (possibly after burningman)

Thanks people!
THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $200, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject@gmail.com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject@gmail.com) no later than June 30, 2008.

Notification will be sent regarding accepted proposals in early July.

Governor's Island Mini Golf Course
Call for Artist Submissions

The Project: This summer, FIGMENT is working with the Governors Island
Preservation and Education Corporation to install a fully functional
9-hole mini golf course on Governors Island, combining recreational
functionality with a unique participatory art project designed and
built by local artists. The course will be free and open to the public
on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays while the island is open from May 31
to the early autumn.

The Challenge: Design and construct a single hole for this mini golf
course, using the theme "City of Dreams." Designs will be judged and
selected on creativity, structural integrity, playability,
feasibility, adherence to theme and budget.

* Creativity: Your piece should be visually stunning and wildly
innovative.
* Structural Integrity: Your piece must be able to withstand use by
players of all ages and sizes, as well as three months' worth of
exposure to the elements. We will provide basic guidelines and
minimums for safe construction of the platforms.
* Playability: Mini golf should be fun, not frustrating. Please design
a hole that you can sink consistently in 2-5 putts. Remember that
young children still developing motor skills will be playing this
game, and if they can't sink a ball into the hole they will hate you.
* Feasibility: Please note that you will be responsible for the
design, construction, and installation of your piece. All 9 holes will
be installed on Governors Island during the week of May 27-30.
* Adherence to Theme: "City of Dreams" is a deliberately open-ended
theme and we encourage your unique interpretation.

The Location: Governors Island is located in the New York Harbor,
approximately 1/2 mile from Lower Manhattan and 1/4 mile from
Brooklyn. Its waterfront offers dramatic and impressive vistas of the
New York skyline and New York Harbor, including the Statue of Liberty
and Ellis Island. In 2003, the Island was opened to the public with
the mission of serving as a cultural and educational location for all
New Yorkers.

To submit a proposal, please respond with the following:
* Your name, address, email, and best phone number to reach you
* 1-3 artistic sketches of your proposed piece
* 1-3 sketches of piece's structural elements
* Brief (100-500 words) description of how your artistic vision
connects with the theme
* Brief construction/installation plan: Where will you build your
piece? What resources do you need, or hope to share, to build and
install the piece?
* Approximate budget for materials only. Selected artists will be
reimbursed for materials purchased up to a certain amount yet to be
determined.

Please submit your proposal by Saturday, April 5, at 11:59 pm ET to
minigolf@figmentnyc.org. Any questions should be directed to this
address, as well.

A few additional considerations:
* Artists will be expected to design, construct, install and maintain
their hole throughout the summer, and to de-install the hole after the
island closes for the season (exact dates to be determined).
* Electricity can be made available for projects that are
weather-proofed appropriately.
* All proposals should be thematically appropriate for players
of all ages.

About FIGMENT: FIGMENT is an annual participatory arts event on
Governors Island in New York Harbor. The mission of FIGMENT is to
provide a forum for community-based participatory art and experience.
FIGMENT strives to build community among artists and participants, to
foster the participatory arts in New York City, and to demonstrate a
vision for the future of Governors Island as an international arts
destination. FIGMENT was launched in 2007 as a one-day arts event,
attracting dozens of participatory arts projects and hosting over
2,800 participants. In 2008, FIGMENT is a three-day event on June
27-29. FIGMENT is a project of Action Arts League
(http://actionartsleague.org), and is produced by a coalition of
volunteers in partnership with The Pure Project
Wednesdays are the weekly Asylum Village Happy Hour , a long-standing
NYC tradition and a great way for people to pop in and connect with
the community. This one will be a special edition. Aslyum has for the
past four years,
once a year, turned over their Happy Hours to the NYC Burning Man Regionals to
create a huge community Meet & Greet and info exchange.

This year we have an added bonus of access to the Delancey grill
upstairs. Grillmaster
MattWithPoi will be manning the BBQ, so bring meats or veggies and

People stop by Happy Hour between 6 and midnight. There will be no
formal presentations, but we recommend you be there between 7 and 9 to
meet the most people!

And please, pass this info on to ALL your friends who've expressed an

MOBILE ART PROJECT NEEDS ACTORS

With the exception of art cars, nearly all other art at Burning Man is statically located in one place. Hence, I am looking for actors to join in this great MOBILE ART PROJECT.

The DREAM VENDORS (working title) will be a guerrilla theater group with the mission of COMMITTING RANDOM ACTS OF THEATER AGAINST UNSUSPECTING DENIZENS OF BLACK ROCK CITY. There will be no stage, and there will be no mercy. We will have political, comical, whimsical, dramatical, sophical sketch comedy and/or improv that will occur whenever and wherever we damn feel like it.

This is, of course, a logistical nightmare of the first order. Therefore! Any actor committed to this project (or committed to another asylum) must also agree to camp together with the other Dream Vendors (camp location unknown at this time). The purpose for this is two-fold: First, cat-herding on playa time is a fucking come down and I am not willing to subject myself or any other sentient being to this task. (On the other hand, if you would like to do this and you are NOT a sentient being...) Second, it will give us an opportunity to rehearse, to improv, to break bread together, to drink and to generally stew into a cohesive troupe.

Who's in? What day do you plan to arrive on the Playa?

Please contact me ASAP. I will only do this if we reach critical mass, which I figure is about 2 dozen actors. Less than that and we're not likely to make this happen. If we don't reach critical mass, let's say 24 actors by May 24th, then I'll scratch the project.

So email me right now!! Really, right now!! Really, what are you waiting for?
DreamVendors @ noisesoff .com
Send my your name, playa name, alien name, email addy, underwear size, phone number, what day you plan to arrive and the registration number of your secret decoder ring.

Your faithful bard,
Ivan, the Bad Elf

San Francisco – Activity erupted the floor of the Stock Exchange and the Artsy Index soared as False Profit, LLC and Missing Piece announced the second incarnation of Alchemy. This flood of activity, however, was not the usual buying and selling.

Several men in business casual were spotted making origami while a large circle of traders watched a walk-off between representatives from several Fortune 500s. Easels sprouted up in the atrium while fortunes built on towers of Legos rose and fell. One bewildered Exchange administrator was heard shouting, “Ok. Who here brought the arc welder?!” It was the most activity the Exchange has ever seen.

“My mind is melting like a Dali clock,” observed one trader, overwhelmed by the unprecedented rise in the Artsy Index. “So I guess that’s what I’ll be painting at Alchemy.”

When asked to describe Alchemy, Stephanie Tholand, Lead Structural Engineer at False Profit, LLC offered this explanation: “It’s really a collaboration built atop a series of collaborations which are themselves collaborations. I assure you, it’s quite unstable and vulnerable to unexpected quakes of artistry.”

Some people are indeed expecting the unexpected: “I’ve heard the Missing Piece fashion show is basically magic,” said an anonymous source from deep within the fashion industry.

Both False Profit, LLC and Missing Piece declined to comment on the details of Alchemy, citing the impossibility of predicting what the attendees will do.

Alchemy, an interactive art event, is commencing on April 26th at
CELLspace in San Francisco and a great flurry of artiness is expected.

A little background…

The Mayday Festival (AKA the 22th Annual Squatters Mayday Celebration) is held yearly in Tompkins Square Park as commemoration of Anarchist founded, international workers holiday, Mayday. The holiday is broadly celebrated in Europe as a commemoration of workers rights, the 8 hour workday, and the anarchist martyrs who died in Chicago the bring about those rights. Mayday also has significance as the ancient pagan celebration of fertility and the coming of spring.

For us here in New York, The Mayday Festival is a celebration of the vibrancy of our neighborhood, our city, and a celebration of our counter-cultural communities. It is also a salute to the victorious squatters of the Lower East Side who have transformed the radical dream, “Housing is a Human Right”, into 11 buildings of legal, tenant-controlled, affordable housing.

The Mayday Festival is a time for our communities to come together, to celebrate, to plot, to inspire. Let the cheers of Mayday’s crowd be heard throughout the city--Arts and Culture are ALIVE and well in New York!!

The Mayday Event, which has attracted crowds of several thousand people in the past, has been hosted for the last 9 years by local party collective and arts organization, Blackkat (www.blackkat.org).

I need your help to settle a bet.

I think there's a real need and desire for container storage out on the playa. My wife isn't so sure.

Seems to me that there are a lot of folks who go to Burning Man like we do... have a few boxes full of BM gear, clothes, playa bikes and camp infrastructure that make the trek out to the playa, get dusty, get boxed back up (and sometimes cleaned up), and come all the way home, not to be touched again until it's time to go back out. Seems like a waste of resources, time and space to me. Isn't there a way to simplify this process?

Here's the basic idea: we drop a container at your camp, which you fill up with all your dusty Burning Man gear, then we come pick it up for you and store it until next year's burn, when it's waiting for you when you get back on playa. Variations on this theme include container size (one size for camps of 3-4 people, the other those 20' shipping containers for big theme camps), use of containers during the festival as kitchens or shelter, transport of containers from or to your home, perhaps stored for a year or two in between. We could store your bike for you for the year, so all you have to do is pack 4 to a car (plus food) and just show up. Storing art cars is another possibility, although most likely a bit further down the road. You get the idea.

If you already think this is a great idea, you can stop reading and jump to this quick survey (takes four minutes, eight tops if you're ADD like me):

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=14sPO_2f3lEHo1H7TpcTT7_2fQ_3d_3d

To set this up as a business (not profit-centric, keeping to BM principles, but still a business) will require a serious investment of time and money on our part, with no guarantee of participants. If I send out a bunch of emails/posts like this one, and get practically no response, it will seem like a pretty obvious sign. Similarly, if all the interest comes when everyone's packing up on Sunday after the burn, we won't have been able to plan for it. So we need to know: would something like this be of interest to you, and if so, can you take 4-8 minutes to tell me so, and how, and why? Or if there is someone you think might be interested in using a service like this, can you forward this to them and encourage them to respond in the next day or two? The link again:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=14sPO_2f3lEHo1H7TpcTT7_2fQ_3d_3d

We are not soliciting for sales leads or trying to get anybody to commit to anything right now. Obviously, if you want to sign up for more information down the road, we'd be happy to get your email address. All we're trying to do is see if this is an idea worth pursuing, and perhaps more than that, that the people actually interested can get it together to notify us that they would make use of such a service. Think of it more like a psychology experiment than market research.

I’m producing a half-hour radio documentary that in part seeks to explore how the Internet is changing the ways we fall in love. I’m searching for individuals who met online—whether through a dating site or through Tribe, MySpace, Facebook, etc.—and fell or began to fall in love through online correspondence and/or chatting before meeting in person. I’m interested in interviewing individuals and couples from both current and past relationships that started online.

I will need to record the conversation, as the project is for radio. My intention is to pitch the documentary in whole or in part to national and local NPR programs, and I have received initial interest from several venues.

Talk to me.

I feel like a moron, I mean, I don't even have a theme, it ought to have been about the magickal spirits from the realm of the fairies, there ought to be some good ways to adapt a costume to the theme, you know, some way to make a sexy costume that has furry leg warmers, arm warmers, and wings, yet says (cut and paste the appropriate theme) all over it. For me it has been about solving problems, technical problems, compositional problems, performance problems.. I mean, after we invented the instrument, we had to figure out how to play it. Sadly, the problem with problems is that unless Janis Joplin has them, they aren't very sexy.
Gallery Manager: Gizem Bacaz
Email: manager@microcosmgallery.com
ph: 212-591-8841

"Net of Being"
New works by Alex Grey
November 10 – December 31
Opening - November 10, 2007 6 - 9pm

On exhibit at MicroCoSM Gallery are Grey's major new paintings including “Holy Family,” and "Net of Being," a fifteen-foot long oil painting introduced to millions by the rock band TOOL. After years of labor, this epic work is on view along with drawings that led to its creation. Related to Grey's series of painted and sculpted "universal beings," begun in 1999, the "Net of Being" portrays an endless perspective of column-like four-faced Godheads. Each head is composed of a fiery grid of eyes and galaxies linked with similar heads in an endless mesh, implying a realm of boundless interconnectedness. A new topology of Being and infinite awareness is mapped by this omni-directional web. Grey states that this visionary realm was visited during an entheogenic (psychedelic) ayahuasca journey he ex-
perienced in 2002. Small sculptural details of the Net of Being are also on view. “Net of Being” was featured on the cover of TOOL’s recent “10,000 Days” album, and the CD package won a 2007 Grammy Award.

Also on exhibit are models of the future Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, architecture designed by Alex Grey. The
entryway pavilion on the ground level is a wheel of 12 Godhead columns similar to those portrayed in the
painting "Net of Being." In the space between the heads nestle smaller replicas of the large domed Chapel.
Smaller Godheads and Chapel shapes repeat fractally, reaching tiny proportions that harmonically relate
to the overall pattern of the building. From every point of view on the grounds of this domed circular struc-
ture, observers witness two profiles mirroring each other, created by the outline of the building and implying
two giant celestial faces. The message encoded in the building is, “When beings come together in Oneness,
they create sacred space.”

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, being designed to house a permanent collection of
Grey's paintings and sculpture, is itself a profoundly inspiring sculpture for a timeless body of artwork.
Best known for his paintings which “X-ray” multiple dimensions of reality, Alex Grey's visual meditations
on the nature of life and consciousness, have led to a world renowned career of exhibitions from the New Mu-
seum in NYC, to Tokyo, to Sao Paulo, a retrospective at Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego, features
on Discovery Channel, Newsweek, Time, and album art for multi-platinum and Grammy award winning rock
bands such as Tool, Beastie Boys, and Nirvana. Because of his underground cult status in the psychedelic
world, his artwork is some of the most reproduced on sheets of blotter acid.

Alex Grey's art illuminates worlds of subtle energy and proposes new icons of trans-denominational spirituality. Along with his wife,
artist Allyson Grey, Alex co-founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, located in Chelsea, open for three
years, as a testing ground for the alliance of divinity, creativity, and community.

All of the food banks are running low on everything. This is a great time to take a look & see if you have anything from the list below that you'd like to bring by to donate.

As an added incentive, for every 3 items you bring, you'll get a raffle ticket. This will be good for a raffle that we'll draw for the big prize on the last happy hour of collection - Wednesday, December 12. Trigger has generously donated a $100 bar tab for the raffle! So, go through those cupboards and see what you've got.

Happy hours are 11/28, 12/5 and 12/12. Donations accepted from about 7 to about 10PM. You can collect a raffle ticket each week or multiple tickets in one happy hour, depending on how many items you bring for donation.

Also, if anyone has anything they'd like to donate for raffling off, please let me know - as anything to encourage people to donate is generously accepted. If you'd like to help me hand out raffle tickets/take donations, please let me know.

One of the tru pioneers of digi dancehall and next level dread bass is comin' thru and his track record is too epic to fit on this page…needless to say, his work on Kruder & Dorfmeister's G-Stone records, Klein Records, collabs with Al-Haca, Warrior Queen, Dub Club have been groundbreaking straight up and down. Get Ready…(www.myspace.com/stefanmoerth )

Behind Door #2…MARYANNE HOBBS!!! – The Radio 1 firebrand at the helm of the pioneering experimental electronic show (Tuesday nite >> Wednesday morning 2.00-4.00am) reppin' next generation dubstep, grime, drum&bass, hip-hop, techno, and radical electronic flavaz in every form (formerly known as the Breezeblock) is making her way from London to get up in the Dance. A luminary pushing the freshest underground sounds to the forefront, Mary Anne released a definitive underground compilation album in October 2006. 'Mary Anne Hobbs. Warrior Dubz features exclusive dubs from some of the most cutting edge artists operating on the UK underground scenes (Benga, DMZ, Burial, Loefah, The Bug, Amit, Kode 9 and more). She also featured Sub Swara's own Dhruva and Sharmaji in an epic soundclash vs. Skull Disco (Shackleton and Appleblim) on her show in 07. (www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/maryannehobbs/)

Speaking of which, Sharmaji (now an official Sub Swara resident -- much respect to Badman DS!) and Dhruva will be teaming up again for a tag team dub session in honor of MaryAnne's presence. A heap of original dubs ready to drop...

Plus, the Sub Swara live set will be in full force, comin' correct with a preview of the Sub Swara album (droppin' early 2008) and the sonics that span the spectrum of bass bin culture.

Like we said, LARGE!! See you up in the dance.

Good Morning My Fair Lords and Ladies,

Since we have entered "The Dark Side" of the calendar year, My Roomate and I have decided to turn our attention to all things literary. To this end, we will be instigating Shakespeare Movie Nights on Random Sundays at Random Locations through out the Winter Season. It's all very casual and rather intimate really. Here is the general concept.

Sometime on Sunday afternoons, us Shakespeare Nerds will gather to watch a film or two. It may be a real Shakespeare production, Hamlet, 12 Night, Midsummers Nights..., The Merchant... or it may be a modern remake of a Shakespearean plot, Scotland PA, "O", or even weirder more loosely related films, Prosperos Books, Rosencrantz and Guilderstern are dead, Joan of Ark, Looking for Richard... Well something like that.

The purpose for doing this is to create space where our burner pals will gather, eat, drink, watch movies, and be merry... that's it. If people get inspired to read as a result, this would be awesome, but that's extra credit, so it's not required, and no one is checking. Besides, Shakespeare's plays were contemporary back in the day, and they were written to be viewed as a performance, not read as a novel, so we will, over the course of the winter, more than likely watch them all, perhaps more than once, so if such a thing suits your fancy, stay tuned to this thread for more details...

Brush Up on your Shakespeare Kidz, I promise, you will be glad you did.

Here is a puzzler for you before I go. Which of Shakespeare's plays closes with the protagonist saying the following line???

Twas I won the wager, though you hit the white;
And, being a winner, God give you good night!

Waiting to Inhale, an independent film by Jed Riffe, examines the heated debate over marijuana and its use as medicine in the United States. Twelve states have passed legislation to protect patients who use medical marijuana. Yet opponents contend the medical argument is just a smokescreen for a different agenda--to legalize marijuana for recreation and profit. What claims are being made, and what is at stake?
