It's been 6 months since I last performed and I'm dying to get back into costume. Anyone who can give me some tid-bits to what's happening in the area I would gladly appreciate it!

Well, kids.......................

Malaika & I did not make it to finals. On one hand, there were THAT MANY great dancers. On the other hand, the judges definitely seemed to favor Egyptian style, and my style is more of an Egyptian/Lebanese/Turkish/American blend. It was a very strange weekend:

It probably started with all the ridiculous toll roads in Illinois. And for all the damn toll booths, you'd think they'd have better roads!

Then, upon arriving at the hotel, we were pushing the luggage cart up the ramp and I did not hear Malaika say "wait" and gave the cart a big heave-ho.... right onto her foot!

The hotel itself had plenty of character. We both tripped over the unmarked "step-up" into the bathroom and, initially, the bathroom light did not want to turn on. It took the magical touch of the security guy (who is an entire story by himself) to get it to turn on. The perk, though, was the room was huge and seemed to have a built-in rehearsal area for us.

The small gym where the contest was held had NO AIR CONDITIONING. Oh my goodness!!! If that weren't enough, we had to wear cover-ups while we were not performing. It was torture.

Malaika & I both performed beautifully despite the heat. There were many wonderful dancers there!!! Even though we did not make finals, the audience really enjoyed our performances - I think that is because we were different than the standard Egyptian style. But it really seemed the judges favored the Egyptian style. I say this because the other dancers that I enjoyed most did not make it to finals either, and they all danced somewhat differently.

Lack of desire and bad online directions kept us from getting to the show on Saturday night, but we did discover a Subway with a telephone pole smack dab in the middle of the narrow parking lot! And, thanks to Kristina, the Ruby Tuesday restaurant we visited is considering adding a Strawberry-Mango margarita to its menu.

The world of competition dance is definitely a different brand of cat. We did meet some nice ladies and one of the vendors gave me a free set of bindis.

I think if I do go to another competition, I will go to one that has workshops with it so it does not feel like such a wasted trip if I don't move up. I am very proud of the dance I developed, though. It was definitely a learning experience, but I'm not sure that I've deciphered the lesson just yet. :P It was a very Twilight Zone kind of weekend.

Howdy Great Plains dancers,

I will be coming to Kansas this August to film a new instructional DVD shooting in Wamego, Kansas ( near Manhattan, Kansas) from August 20-22, 2008.

I’m looking for a dancer(s) who lives in the area that might have some time to volunteer on the shoot as a part-time or full time production assistant.

The job or jobs would entail a few general aspects: assistant for hair/make-up, acting as a “script girl”- keeping track of dialogue and what segments were shot; helping out with wardrobe, assisting director Steve Balderson or myself with small tasks.

There is no pay, you would get credit as a production assistant both on the DVD box and within the program, you will receive finished copies of the DVD, ( and other DVD’s and swag in trade for your service!) and your meals will be taken care of. If time permits, we could possibly trade a private lesson or two as well…

If you are interested, please contact me, and let me know your availability:

Thanks!

It got to be a bear trying to choreograph large group dances when not everyone could come to every rehearsal. So we broke down into smaller groups, and I can work choreographies with the smaller groups more easily. The names follow a kind of "biblical bad girls" theme (or not-necessarily-in-the-bible in the case of Lilith.)

If you were at Spectacular, you could identify the groups by what color they were wearing. The Liliths were first up in Orange, the Jezebels were in the burgundy Red, the Delilahs were in Purple, and the Salomes were in Blue.

The Salomes are Diva Soma's professional corps. These are the dancers that most often will take wedding gigs, birthday parties, etc.

I especially enjoyed all the little girls who came up during the mini-instruction session. It looks like we will have to get that "Diva Girls" class going after all!

And I am still so proud of the banner!!! If you're in the area and need some printing, give my boss a call at MSM Printing!
My big, heartfelt thanks to all the divas, mini diva dudes (Jackson,) and diva mammas (Sapphire Phoenix's mom) that helped out.

Since she became sick, just before the fourth of July, I haven't really spent time checking messages, etc. The first week was a lot of driving back and forth to spend as much time with her as I could. The second week was driving back and forth to be with my family as we made arrangements for the services. Last week was spent trying to re-capture a little sense of "normal" - getting back into the swing of work, teaching etc.

I will be spending a lot of time over the next week trying to catch up with everything I've missed the past few weeks. I feel like I've been in a foreign country and my head is still kind of foggy. I sincerely appreciate all the well-wishes and sympathies. I am truly overwhelmed realizing how many warm, supportive people surround me. It does my heart good, and I know Mom is probably relieved in her new existence to know that her children are so well-cared for.

I'm hoping to post a picture of her soon so you can all see the beautiful lady who was my mother. Til then, my warmest gratitudes to you all. This process is not finished for me, and I will continue to rely on your support and patience. Thanks.

You'll want to mark your calendar now for the 2007 installment of Nebraska Bellydance Spectacular! On Saturday, March 24th, all the best and brightest raqs stars of Nebraska will be under one roof. And this year, the event will be truly spectacular: in addition to the evening show, we've got a little something happening all day long.

The afternoon starts with beginner-level classes, offered by wonderful local instructors! Della (of Lotus Dancers) will teach a veil class, Calliste (of Basharaat) will teach an intro to Gothic-style dance, Ashiya (of Athenian Dancers) will teach an intro to Greek-style dance, and Magdalene (of Diva Soma) will teach basic bellydance combos.

Running simultaneously with the classes will be "green show" performances on the mainstage by troupes like Benu Dance Company, Karavan of Dreams, Whorlwinds, Lotus Dancers, Bedouin Star, Athenian Dancers, and Diva Soma. Each troupe will have their own 20 minute show where you can get to know the diverse groups our state has to offer. Then, in the evening, the state's most celebrated dancers are featured in the Spotlight Show.

The event will be held at Omaha's Benson Community Center on 60th & Maple Streets. Ticket information and more details to come soon! Please keep checking the Diva Soma web site www.divasoma.com or our tribe http://tribes.tribe.net/divasoma for the most current information as it is available.

topic posted Tue, June 5, 2007 - 8:21 PM by Kamala Devi
Greetings all belly dancing beauties!

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

totallynortherntribal.com/BBBD....ar.htm

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2008.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

Kamala Devi and the BBBD 2008 Calendar Committee

DISCLAIMER: there is no connection between Totally Northern Tribal (TNT) and the BBBD 2008 Calendar. Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi, a member of TNT, linked off her TNT Member’s Page.

Mahmoud Reda will return to the Iowa City area on July 27-29, 2007 to teach workshops in Egyptian dance. The event includes:

* Early bird arrivals: showing of the Reda movie Gharam fi al-Karnak with English subtitles on Thursday evening
* A hafla Friday night featuring performances by workshop attendees (some professionals, some students)
* Workshops during the day on Saturday and Sunday
* A show of entirely professional dancers on Saturday night

The workshops will be held in an air-conditioned facility.

For those not familiar with Mahmoud Reda, he was the founder of an entire performing art in Egypt, that of the theatrical presentation of folkloric dance. He founded Reda Troupe in 1959, starred in several movies that also featured his choreography, and became known as Egypt's greatest choreographer.

Even if you normally dance barefoot, be sure to wear either dance shoes or socks to this workshop to protect the soles of your feet and your knees. Reda's dance style involves a large amount of spins, Arabesques, and other pivoting moves, and your feet need to be able to pivot freely without sticking to the floor.

That's the essence of this Gypsy trade. Not trying to be a beggar, but if you or someone you know doesn't need an item anymore, I would be delighted to take it off your/their hands. I'm looking for stuff people want to get rid of free-and-clear rather than loaners... loaned items have a way of getting damaged and thereby damaging relationships. Also, if we get two of an item, I need to know if the donor wants it back, or if we can just pass it on to someone else in need.

So here's the Diva/Gnosis wish list! Ready, set, go to your basements/garages/storage units!

-Chalkboards or Dry-erase boards
-Live plants
-Plant stands
-Clothing racks (free-standing)
-10-key print calculator
-Folding tables (Banquet size or card tables)
-Folding chairs
-Rolling office chair
-Dress form or mannequin
-Record (yes, record) player, pref w/ ability to record to cassette (I know, I'm so 80's)
-Small refrigerator
-Microwave
-TV/VCR/DVD (I think a couple of the Divas might have this one covered)
-Office-size Copier (willing to pay an amount towards this)
-Binding machine
-Retail tag guns
-Utility shelving
-I know I'm probably forgetting something......

Heck, I may as well mention that if anyone knows who can get me a good deal on wood/parquet flooring, let me know. I've got some picked out, but if I can get an even better price, I'd love it!

Thanks in advance for any help, Diva fans!
