I have a problem...

And I can't believe I never noticed it before.

My husband, the future emphysema and cancer patient, smokes like a chimney. I took some of my pieces to show to a friend and when I took them out of the bag, they stink to high heaven of smoke.

I nearly cried.

My husband swears he's going to quit. I'll believe it when I don't see it. That's not the problem. How do I get that ashtray smell out of the clothes? Some of this stuff can't be washed as I'm afraid it will ruin the tassels. I tried Febreze and while it smells nice, I'm not sure that's the way to go.

I know that from now on each piece is going to be sealed into its own little bag with a lavendar sachet or something. I was so disgusted and embarassed. I can't sell stuff like that! A couple dog hairs is one thing, but that was just gross.

Help me. Please.

I say keep them stored in a place that exposed to smoke smell.

Spray with a vodka essential oil mixture (be sure to do a test somewhere first) but the vodka pulls the smells out quite nicely. You will have to do this somewhere that the smoke cant get to it.

As a former smoker... I feel your pain.

And that second hand smoke isnt good for you either.

      besides making him smoke outside
have your stuff sit outside all day
hang it out on a clothes line-and if possible if it won't ruin the item
      in the sun

    IIRC:

Get a big rubbermaid (or similar) tub with a lid that seals tight. Pick up from a pet store a bunch of Activated Charcoal (look in the fish section). Pour the Activated charcoal into the bottom of the tub and set something on top of it that will prevent your costume piece from actually touching the charcoal. Put your item in the tub making sure the air can circulate under and around it, and pop the lid in place.

Unfortunately this is something I have not tried yet, so I can't tell you how long it takes the Activated Charcoal to pull the smoke smell out of the garment. This is a trick professional costumers use to get the funk out of delicate items that can't handle a washing or any liquid such as Vodka/Water mix (which does work wonders BTW)

I would suggest hanging the item outside for a while first to get the bulk of the smell out, then try either the vodka or charcoal trick.

    Good luck!

btw, the vodka & water thing is: Mix 1 part vodka to 3 parts water then spray the item with mixture until damp & let dry completely before you store away the item. Will not only take out the smell, but gets out any bacteria, too (if it's something you've been sweating in). If it can't get wet at all, I'd try the activated charcoal suggestion above -- but you may need to let the item sit for a few days.

If these are things you're selling, besides the smell factor, you do also need to consider allergy factor - for both the smoke & the pet hair. For those people who may be allergic to either (and this can be severe with some), this could be potentially dangerous. Take care to get rid of any stray pet hairs on the garments & be sure you let people know that the garments you are selling come from a pet-friendly environment so they can make an informed decision as a consumer.

Try hanging them in an enclosed place, smoke-free with a small dish of ammonia, like regular cleaning ammonia for a couple of days. Ammonia is a trick they use to get the smoke smell out of rooms. Supposedly it works.

if you ever want to be able to sell the house, he should try to smoke outside. it might help his motivation with quitting (since you said he wants to) once you get the smell out, make those space bags, the hanging kind, would be helpful for keeping it out. don't suck the air out if you don't need to so you don't squish your bras, but it seems like it would keep them safe from the smoke smell.

In the top five rules of trying to quit smoking (from my now non-smoking significant other) is "no smoking in the house".

There are a lot of online support groups online. I hear zyban can help.
