Finally have a video of The Pants in action. These are hand-dyed silk with the flounce edges finished with a very narrow satin ribbon, so the entire emphasis is on the movement. I think they were absolutely the right choice for this dance.

The ready-to-wear Petitie Jamilla-type versions that I've seen worn to the studio seem to have larger fins, and the fins are more triangular than flouncy. I didn't want the girls to look like knock-off Petite Jamillas but like mischievious forest spirits. Gailene's pattern had the right dimensions for the look. I did end up inserting faux seams in the pant bodies for the flounces ( I don't have a serger), reducing the crotch depth, and adding a gusset at the crotch for strength.

The bras are simple but relatively supportive triangle bras (A-C cup) the instructions for which I keep meaning to post. The crocheted belts were made by one of Ruric's students. She never did figure out how to support the flowers or to keep the belts from stretching so I ended up mounting them on sturdy shaped tie belts the same color as the pants.

  • Lovely performance and the pants and tops are gorgeous.

I have a crochet tassel belt I'm working on. I used a decorative ribbon across the top to keep it from stretching length wise. I thought about using some diluted fabric stiffner to help with the width stretching from decorations and tassels and such. I bought some wide width grossgrain ribbon to apply to the back side of the belt but figured I'd try that the next time I made one after I see how this one will hold up.

The belts are an 'instant tribal' shape with a few darts in them and a cotton drill lining to give them enough substance to keep from folding over from the weight of the flowers on the top (the girls attached bells and stuff to them, ha ha) and to keep the belts from moving around the torso as the dancers jump and leap. I used my sewing machine and ruthlessly stitched over some of the edges of the crocheted items to keep them in place AND keep them from falling off - the yarn and the knots simply were not going to hold up to a lot of wear! The belt itself has grosgrain across the top to keep IT from stretching.
