DIY tutorial - the frankencholi

Hi all! I'm getting ready for my first performance and sewing like mad. Not only does this keep me from getting too nervous about the performance itself, but I've also made a pledge not to buy any new clothing, shoes, accessories, and even fabric for the first 6 months of 2008. I can buy thrifted clothes or make items out of older clothing and remnants. Since I wanted to make my own choli and the other crafty gals in my ATS class seemed interested in the concept, I made this tutorial. So here it is: the frankencholi, built out of and old fitted tee. I hope this comes in handy to others, too :)

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this tutorial. It instantly went into my faves list and I WILL be doing it soon. I see some "new" cholis for Spirit of the Tribes. I love, love, love recycled/repurposed clothing and this is just perfect!

    Thanks!!

    Great presentation on the tutorial!

I couldn't help but find your etsy store. I'm drooling over the frilly messenger bag!

Thanks :D I'm almost sad to sell it! I may make that a fairly regular style if I get more similar weight dresses/skirts/shirts to cannibalize. I'll be putting up more stuff in the store when my very first ATS performance is over [friday] and I have a bit of time to sew some more things. Everything's repurposed. Did you find the rest of my DIY tutorials? I'm compiling a list. It's not all-encompassing, but it's projects I think the average crafty person might have fun with around the house.

I've got a similar method for making cholis from thrift store shirts. I can't wait to try your method out, I love the style. You've done an awesome job with your directions and illustrations. Coincidentally enough, I have a rubbermaid bin full of shirts I bought just to make cholis from. I guess I know what I'll be doing tonight!

These were the easiest directions I have ever seen! I love it! Thank you for sharing! I'm now going crazy with some of the old fitted tees I've bought before and just were sitting in a drawer...I am going to have quite the collection of unique cholis now!

I whipped one of these up yesterday, and am for the most part pleased with how it came out. I do have a problem with the sides on the back though, because they gap terribly despite cutting the back at an angle up to shorten them. I'm going to run thin elastic down them so they'll hug the body, and also insert gussets under the arms because when I raise my arms there is a hint of undercleavage no matter how tightly I tie the band. Oh, I also put grossgrain ribbon inside the band on the bottom so it and the ties wouldn't stretch out.
