What material seems to make a good headband base? I'm thinking of something soft and pliable as opposed to the hard plastic headband bases you get in the stores, unless that really is a good option. I see a lot of great fabric headbands in the pics in groups but I can't figure out what material peope are using! :)

Re: headband bases
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 8:40 AMI had a hard time figuring out what to use as a base for a long time, too. Those hard plastic headbands give me a headache after a while. I wound up using an old leather belt of my husband's cut to size and covered with a piece of black cotton fabric. Then I attached grosgrain ribbons to the end of the fabric as ties. -

Wed, March 26, 2008 - 2:51 PMI once took apart a faux-leather choker I got at Claire's for $.50 apart and attached elastic in the holes (after I removed the snaps) for a headband.

Wed, March 26, 2008 - 8:41 AMHi Caryn -
I have started making more and more headbands for myself.... I typically use a wide ribbon or pretty cloth and sew it to a backing - from there you can hand sew any attachements to it, and then sew a string on each side and you are done! Here are some I am working on and the bottom link is a completed one:

Hope this helps! -

Re: headband bases
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 8:56 AMI would get some duck cloth or canvas, then put a cushy fabric on the inside and a fancy fabric on the outside. You'd only need an 1/8 yd fabric, and that would make 5 head bands.

Re: headband bases
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 10:06 AMi made a couple based on store bought headbands, one from a belt, and i'm working on another one with yet another piece of corduroy (finally getting that stuff used up!)
if you find some really pretty fabric that's not very sturdy, you can always sew it to something thicker. i tried the plastic canvas idea again with the corduroy headband base (only one piece instead of two ths time) -

Sat, October 18, 2008 - 12:53 PMI've used corduroy as liner on mine as it doesn't slide around on my hair and it works well.

Re: headband bases
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 11:24 AMAll of mine have been from the store bought wide head bands and then I cover them with fabric and add accessories to them - flowers, trim, jewels, etc. You have a to try on a few to find one that wouldn't be so tight on your head.

Re: headband bases
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 5:44 PMOK. "HOW" do you keep them on your head!! It's like I have no shelf / lip / sorta - thingy at the back of my head to keep headbands on. They slide right up the back of my head!! -

Re: headband bases
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 6:00 AMI have the same problem.
1. Put something on the underside that will "grip" the hair. ..like rubber no-slip shelf liner.
2. Stitch a couple of wig clips to the band. The little wire teeth will go into the hair and then snap shut once the band is where you want it.
I found (at CVS Pharmacy) a new type of band...it's a flexible "gel" plastic - circles attached to circles with the band itself going down to just behind the ears and 1/4" elastic (doubled up) to go under the hair. It also has little grip teeth. I've used one for daily wear and it stayed well enough. I think when it gets "weighted" down with doo-dads, it'll stay in place fairly well.

Re: headband bases
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 4:26 AMMouse pad. The old, soft squishy kind. No slip, and you can cover it with something for any color. Sew through the cover instead of the pad to add decorations. And it adds a nice solid pad up there so that your sword doesn't grind into your head, and if you leave a large buttonhole in just the right place, the rubber helps keep it from sliding a little bit.
I know... it's cheating... but I HATE that groove in my head, and I already have headaches. It's the reason I don't play with my big kewl heavy sword.
Gotta get mine done and get pics. I hate this part - I have to commit to one idea, and limit myself to the decorations that fit in the space. Terrible. So many good inspirations on here I want to play with.... -
