I just bought an awesome Banjara skirt (not a mini) and I need to cut off the mirrored top part of the skirt - which breaks my heart, but it's not useable as-is.
Any advice on the best way to do this?

Re: Anyone ever altered a Banjara skirt?
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 1:02 PMI haven't so I don't know, but the first thing that came to mind was 'save the part you cut off and make a mirror tribal belt out of it'.

Re: Anyone ever altered a Banjara skirt?
Thu, November 13, 2008 - 4:23 PMSo stitch a strip of bias tape on down very thoroughly just underneath the mirror panel. Like the tape will be holding the pleating and be the structural replacement of the panel.
Cut the mirror panel off. The end.

Thu, November 13, 2008 - 8:34 PMCan I ask? How come you want to take the mirror top off? Do you want to make it a regular skirt?
I haven't tried to do that, but I opened up my Banjara skirt and made it into an apron style overskirt and just tie over other stuff. There are some pix in my profile of it. I love it like that.
If you feel really guilty about taking off the mirror you can always make it into an overskirt.

Re: Anyone ever altered a Banjara skirt?
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 3:58 AMWhy cut it off?
Well the mirrored panel is 8" wide x 34" long (the mirror work doesn't extend the entire length - only 29" of 34) and it makes a rather awkward yoke - as my high hip is 35" and the booty is 38" and I'd rather not wear the skirt FCBD split style or as an overskirt - as I suspect there is a fair amount dye that will bleed....it just has that 'I'm saturated with dye' feel to it.
Leesahh, I probably wouldn't cut the yoke off if my skirt had a yoke similar to your skirt - it looks like yours has a fair amount of fabric in it - I'm a little concerned about wearing belts and such over so much glass.
The up-side is that the yoke is completely recycle-able for belts, bras and other embellishments.
I'll have a look at the bias tape method - I'm a little concerned with having enough space...I may have to get the seam ripper out for some 'exploratory surgery' and find out what's going on underneath the panel.

and wouldn't you know....I'm thinking I might dye the hip band red...maybe....we'll see. BUT I'm so stoked to have an awesome mirror panel intact and a skirt that is ready for performance.
