Attaching coins to a bra?

topic posted Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:41 AM by  Renate
What's the easiest way to attach coins to a bra? Is there a pattern I should follow? Any links or advice would be wonderful! I am a caberet dancer and have never made any kind of tribal costuming before. Any advice on a yarn tribal belt would be great as well. Thanks ladies :~D

I always sew them on using really strong thread. Quilting thread, or Nymo (beading thread) work well and are very strong, also dental floss works very well, although it's white and might show too much against the fabric. I always pass thru the coin 2 or 3 times with a doubled thread, and I knot off (but don't cut) the thread after each coin, that way if one comes loose, it's only one and not the entire thread's worth.

      Reiteration of Lena's post...

I have used regular sewing thread... but dental floss works I have used Kevlar thread which is good but hear there is a potential for staining with rust I believe is what I heard.

      More re-iteration
I think the biggest key with doing it... is make several passes. TIE IT OFF... then make another pass or two... that way you have don't just wrap it around a bunch and tie it off. That's good but if one of those threads break the whole kitten kaboodle is gone... if you secure it twice and break thread, you have given yourself that back up threading. ok enough re-itterating.

if you only have regular thread you can turn it into heavy duty by doubling it, waxing it, and then ironing it (bee's wax, and use a cloth to protect your iron) just run the thread threw the wax and then heat it. you can also do this to already heavy duty(upolstry, sp?) thread to maker it even stronger. ^_^ good luck!

Are you using jump rings? They will allow the coin to swing freely as opposed to just sewing through the hole in the coin.
I like to attach all my coins together on a chain (chain link, chain link with a coin, chain link, chain link with a coin, etc) and sew the chain on. You can make a sort of chain maille with the links and determine your pattern before sewing it on. Have fun!
